Niche Perfume Store Report: Boerum Hill’s Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique & Apothecary + The Best Perfume Swag Bag Ever

Twisted Lily Fragrance Boutique and Apothecary, 360 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Not too long ago, the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn was known as merely a quiet bedroom community of brownstones and redbrick houses where a diverse population enjoyed a humble life in the shadows—quite literally—of Manhattan’s gleaming skyscrapers. Needless to say, this was a time when the hardcore Barney's, Bendel, and Bergdorf crowd wouldn't dare travel farther south than SoHo when they had the urge to max their MasterCards. However, like the rest of Gotham, Boerum Hill has witnessed a Times Square-level renaissance. Bringing their unique backgrounds and perspectives, the populace of Boerum Hill has opened doors to new restaurants, boutiques and shops.

With the recently-unveiled Barclays Center Stadium, this area is thriving. Know your Bs… it's now Barclays, Brooklyn, and Boerum which have become as trendy as Barney's,  Bendel's  and Bergdorf's. Where once a lucky, learned fragrance lover might have scored some imported Arabic attars, African oils, or essential oils from sidewalk vendors, perfumistas now have an opportunity to explore a whole new level of olfactory bliss. Twisted Lily, a  niche fragrance boutique and apothecary, has opened its doors.

The proud owners of this exciting new venture are Eric Weiser and Stamatis Birsimijoglou. No strangers to the perfume industry, Eric and Stamatis founded Parfum1.com, one of net’s most popular sites for the most exclusive niche fragrances. With Twisted Lily, these gents are bringing it to the next level. "After years of selling online, we wanted to bring the experience of finding a signature scent to a more personal level with a brick and mortar store," said Eric. "We wanted to expand the experience of selling perfume to something more intimate – the difference between ordering a product or sample on the internet versus the experience of discovering fragrance in person."

I admit I may have been a bit cocky when I heard this shop would have ultra-exclusives never-before-seen in this part of the hemisphere. I thought I tried them all or least heard of them all. To my great pleasure, I was instantly humbled as I walked through the door. Passing under a chandelier built from empty Etat Libre D’Orange bottles, my jaw dropped. Barely noticing some of my closest friends (including all of my GoodSmellas!) I walked into the store like Charlie walking into the Chocolate Factory.

“Come with me…”

Slumberhouse!

“and you’ll be…”

 perfumista paradise…in  Boerum Hill Brooklyn

Now knocking over my friends, I grabbed some paper sample strips and spritzed away. Montale, Amouage, Penhaligon’s, Patricia de Nicolai, L'Artisan Parfumeur, UNDERGREEN, Maria Candida Gentile, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Ramon Monegal, Mona di Orio, Thirdman, Belle Fleur candles, Etat Libre D’Orange, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Maison Dorin (coming soon), Jardins d’Ecrivains Perfumes and Candles and scads more niche and natural perfumes and beauty brands… I was asked if I’d like a Pear + Olive martini (a nod to the Slumberhouse hit which I named my #1 fragrance last year). I passed on the drink, only because I was already intoxicated by the perfumed air ( I did indulge in the decadent chocolate macarons inspired by Jardins D'Ecrivains  ooh la la French Perfumes)

A short while later, with a smile, I approached a special set of shelves. The perfume geek in me instantly recognized the strategic placement of three perfume houses: DS & Durga, Joya, and CB – I Hate Perfume – born right here in the B-K. Like the residents of Brooklyn themselves, these Brooklyn natives live peacefully among  the perfumes representing many diverse  niche fragrance lines from all over the world. “From Seattle to Sidney, Australia,” Stamatis remarked. "Our curation of fragrance means our customers no longer have to go all over Manhattan or Nolita to find niche, naturals or Brooklyn brands.  We have brought them all to Twisted Lily: one-stop shopping including brands that are exclusively available here.”

I’ve often heard business owners recite an old saying: “A rising tide floats all ships.” As the world falls in love with fragrance and as more “civilians” become “perfumistas,” businesses such as Twisted Lily will all prosper. A secret  this good can only be kept for so long.

  • Maison Dorin is a brand I have tried one fragrance from, but I am not familiar with any others in that line. There are several I love already like Tommi Sooni, Undergreen, Joya, Maria Candida Gentile and more. Wishing I lived closer to NY or that someday we get a nice Niche Store/Perfumery closer to where i live in Wisconsin. Oh and yes please enter me for that amazing swag bag please 🙂

  • “Now knocking over my friends, I grabbed some paper sample strips and spritzed away.” *lol* xD

I am pretty new to niche perfumes, but I read about them all the time. I’ve tried Smell Bent, Amouge, Slumberhouse, and Nest. I have heard of Montale, Mona di Orio, L’artisan, and the rest. There are many that I am unfamiliar with and would love to read about and test; having so many new fragrances to look forward to is the best.

I am in the US, MN and would like to have a boutique like this near me too.

http://twistedlily.com/ has a bunch of best sellers!
Jardins D’Ecrivains La Dame Aux Camelias, D.S. & Durga Poppy Rouge, In Fiore Patchouli Royale, Belle Fleur Kyara Clove, Jardins D’ecrivains Orlando, Smell Bent St. Tropez, Maria Candida Gentile Exultant, Rouge Bunny Rouge Vespers, Tommi Sooni Tarantella, Kai Body Glow Kai, The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest, and Ramon Monegal Agar Musk.

Love the chandelier 🙂 DS Durga, Tommi Sooni, CB I Hate Perfume, Thirdman, Ramon Monegal, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Jardin dEcrivains and lots of others are brands I haven’t tried. Montale, L’Artisan, and Amouage are more familiar, and Slumberhouse Pear and Olive is the next full bottle I want. The selection here is dizzying!

  • Wow! The shop looks awesome, the brands that I am not familiar with are Jardin d’Ecrivains, Tommi Sooni, DS & Durga and CB Ihate Perfumes, I’d love to try them.

  • I love that there is another reason to head to Brooklyn now on my semi-annual trips to NYC! Can’t wait to see this amazing store (love the ELdO chandelier!). I have been wanting to smell Providence Perfume and DS Durgo. I have a US mailing address.

  • Oh goodness. . .I can barely wait until the next time I visit Brooklyn!! It might be hazardous to my health as in “I’ve died and gone to heaven!”

I’ve never heard of Rouge Bunny Rouge, Thirdman, or Maison Francis Kirkdjian. I’ve heard of, but not tried DS&Durga, and Joya (and their collaboration!), Providence Perfume Company, and Mona D’Orio. Oh, really, I’d love to try it all! I already love so many, but tops in my personal collection are from slumberhouse, CB I Hate Perfume, Patricia De Nicolai, and L’artisan Perfumeur.

On the shelf are (in no order): CB I Hate Perfume, Providence Perfume Company, Tommi Sooni, slumberhouse, Histoires De Parfums, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Undergreen, Maison Francis Kirkdjian, L’Artisan Perfumeur, Jardin D’Escrivains, and I believe there’s an unopened bottle of Amouage.

I can’t begin to guess what the faves are. My taste in scent is not typical, from what I understand, but I am guesing slumberhouse Pear & Olive is on it. And Vagabond Prince’s Enchanted Forest (which I’d love to try).

What a fabulous draw!!! Lucky person who wins!!!!

  • I had never heard of In Fiore, Maison Dorin, Sheswai, or Belle Fleur before. I know and love Amouage ,Maria Candida Gentile, L’Artisan, The Vagabond Prince and others. I do enjoy the Histoires De Parfums but I’m very curious of Amouage, Mono Di Orio, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Montale, Slumberhouse, D.S. & Durga, Jardin’s D’encrivains, Ramon Monegal. Oh, heck pretty much all of them.

Now on the best sellers I believe there are quite a bit from what I read.

  • It is so nice to see the faces behind the Parfum1 web site. It has long been one of only two online sites that I trust and order from regularly. Then about a year and a half ago they upped their game and began carrying niche brands. They had some great samples with purchase to introduce the new lines (bring that back, guys! It got me to try and buy!). Now they are more an online perfume storefront and have differentiated themselves from the discount sites. Nice to see they’ve taken the step to open a real storefront, and I would sure like to go there and see it. What a collection of hard to find brands! I was just bemoaning the other day I didn’t know where to find Tommi Sooni. I have heard of most of the brands they carry, but have not tried most of them.

  • This boutique sounds delightful and the product mix is amazing. I just got my nose on Undegreen, Tommi Sooni, and Jardind d’Encrivains. I have yet to try Joya, RBR, and Maison Dorin. I wish them much success.
As for the products on the shelves: Tommi Sooni, Maison Francis Kirkdjian, CB I Hate Perfume, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Providence Perfume Co, Slumberhouse, Histories des Perfumes, Undergreen, Jardins d’Encrivians. I am in the US. Thank you!

  • Next time I’m in New York, this spot will definitely be n my list of places to go! Most of these brands are familiar, but there were still many with which I am not familiar- Thirdman, Mason Dorin, Tommi Sooni. Can’t wait to see this place for myself!

  • I’m not familiar with any of them. I’m new to this whole experience, but I love reading about the different scents! I’ve never visited New York and this is probably about as close as I will ever be able to be to the shop.

I’m in the CONUS, way down in Florida. 🙂

  • I really love the chandelier, what a great custom touch. I love CB I hate perfume and L’artisan , would really love to try Tommi Sooni, Mason Dorin, Slumberhouse and Rouge Bunny Rouge.
I would love to visit this store in person. I live in the US.

  • Wow, what a beautiful shop! I can’t wait to visit!

I already love L’Artisan Perfumeur, Ramon Monegal, and Mona di Orio but I am not familiar with D.S. & Durga, Jardins D’ecrivains, Slumberhouse or Maison Francis Kukdjian. Also excited to try Rouge Bunny Rouge.

Thank-you for the draw!! I am in the US.

  • I have heard of many of these brands because of the blogs I read, but have only experienced smelling some of Amouage and L’Artisan fragrances. This store would be so much fun to visit. I wish them much success on this endeavor and I thank them for their generosity. I am in the U.S.

  • What a gorgeous store! I can’t wait to see it in person. I thought I knew everything about fragrance but I have never heard of Rouge Bunny Rouge or Belle Flour. OTOH I am a big fan of Slumber house and Etat Libre d’Orange. I live in the US and my eyesight is not good enough to pick out the brands, though I do see some lovely Tommi Soon bottles.

  • Tommi Sooni, Joya and Jardins d’Ecrivians are all new to me. I have read reviews and had dreams about many of the others listed. Parfum1.com is my favorite online stop and they have always sent out my orders with no flubs. Love to know they have a new place to head to when next in town.

  • the only brands i had never heard of before are UNDERGREEN, Belle Fleur, Maison Dorin, and Jardins d’Ecrivains. The brands that I love include Slumberhouse!, Amouage, L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Patricia De Nicolai

As far as the perfumista paradise is concerned, I recognize Tommi Sooni, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, CB I Hate Perfume, Slumberhouse, Histoires de Parfums, Jardins D’Ecrivains, Memoire Liquide, Providence Perfume, Rouge Bunny Rouge, and UNDERGREEN

My guess is that the site’s best sellers are Maison Francis Kurkdjian, L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Amouage

    I reside in the U.S.

  • It’s great to see the beains behind Parfum1! If I ever make it back to NYC I know where to stop. I live in the US, and think these are the brands on the shlves: CB I Hate Perfume, Providence Perfume Company, Tommi Sooni, slumberhouse, Histoires De Parfums, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Undergreen, Maison Francis Kurkdijian, L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Jardin D’Ecrivains.
