Celebrity endorsements are part of the marketing of perfume. The most iconic celebrity to be associated with any perfume in modern times is Marilyn Monroe for Chanel No. 5. For over 80 years, Chanel No. 5 has represented everyday glamour to women throughout the world. Last year, Brad Pitt caused quite a stir as the face of Chanel No. 5, but our collective consciousness will always equate that legendary perfume with an equally legendary woman: Marilyn Monroe. Rumor had it that Ms. Monroe claimed that she wore nothing to bed but Chanel No. 5, raising temperatures and causing much dabbing of No. 5 all over the world.
Now, with the discovery of a recording made during a 1960 interview with Georges Belmont, the Editor-In-Chief of Marie Claire, the rumor becomes reality. Chanel will use Marilyn’s own inimitable voice and the iconic photograph by Ed Feingersh to confirm what we have always somehow known: “You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: ‘What do you wear to bed ? A pyjama top? The bottoms of the pyjamas? A nightgown?’ So I said, ‘CHANEL N°5’, because it’s the truth… And yet, I don’t want to say ‘nude’ But it’s the truth!”*
The new campaign will appear in print and on TV beginning this Fall, 2013.
