For many years I have enjoyed sewing for my children and myself. I rarely have the time for this creative outlet anymore but I still have a closet full of beautiful fabrics that I simply can’t bear to give away, fabrics that were meant for elegant blouses, evening dresses and all kinds of interesting accessories.

This week, while sampling three of the 2016 offerings from Auphorie, the textures, colors and wear-ability of these lovely new fragrances reminded me of some of my favorite silk and cotton yard goods.  Maybe I will wear these textile beauties someday, but for now I will luxuriate in the olfactory textures created by Art and Olfaction Award Winning  artisan perfumers Eugene and Emrys Au.

Elfen Spring – During the 1990s, fresh aquatics were “done to death” by designers and celebs alike.  As a result, composing an original smelling, contemporary aquatic fragrance has been a real challenge.  Elfen Spring is one of the best of this resurrected genre.  I was more than pleasantly surprised by Auphorie’s carefully crafted, new take on watery freshness. The Eau de Parfum begins with an exhilarating, modern aquatic and carries that aspect well into the floral heart.

The texture of the fragrance is almost that of watered silk – a delicate moiré Anglaise.  Lustrous, creamy white blossoms and sweet mandarin contrast against repeated, rippling patterns of green melon, blue water and the scent of amber and woods.  The translucent character of Elfen Spring might also translate to sheer, blue-green ombre chiffon, enveloping the wearer in diaphanous veils of muguet, water lily and tuberose.  Elfen Spring is discrete, long lasting and far more complex and satisfying than a cursory first sniff would suggest. Fragrance notes and accords:  Mandarin orange, lotus, water notes, melon, gardenia, water-lily, tuberose, lily of the valley, precious woods, amber, musk.

Regal Secret – For me this is a scent of summer.  The initial bergamot, pineapple and juicy fruits create a refreshing cologne-like effect that satisfies my craving for citrus.  Regal Secret recalls the classic, cooling scents I so liberally applied long ago and brings back memories of sunny days, the buzz of cicadas and hot afternoons relaxing in the shade of sprawling live oaks. This summery fruit punch is quickly modified by the powder and sweetness of heliotrope and a bouquet of orange blossom, jasmine and lavender creating a smooth, translucent, crisp scent experience, similar to the feeling of cotton lawn against the skin.

Cotton lawn (originally manufactured in Laon, France) is a type of lightweight semi-sheer cotton with an ultra smooth, crisp finish and a sleek, silky hand.  After about two hours Regal Secret slowly loses this cooling, crisp quality and begins a long dry down to the final creamy, napped, suede-like finish of oakmoss, warm vanilla, ambergris and musk.  Regal Secret is a light, polite, long-lived oriental fruity-floral Eau de Parfum, reminiscent of summer but suitable for any season. Fragrance notes and accords:  Bergamot, pineapple, fig, cassis, orange blossom, white suede, jasmine, lavender, rose, oakmoss, ambergris, vanilla, heliotrope and musk.

Eternal Voyage I am immediately taken with dark, smoky labdanum spiced with a breath of cumin, coriander and some sort of peppery accord.  Within minutes this dusky, peppery scent is highlighted with notes of sweet, caramelized brown sugar, burnt crème and amber that give a luscious iridescence to the fragrance, akin to the visual effect and feel of shot silk velvet (changeant or nacre velvet).  The colors of Eternal Voyage are hues of rich rose and russet, laced and threaded through with reflective golden amber.

Dandelions by Cyril Rolando

In order to create shot silk velvet, the fabric is loomed using different colors of yarn for the warp and weft. The resulting iridescent effect is enhanced by the texture of the velvet pile, creating both depth and shimmer.  In the dry down Eternal Voyage becomes ever richer and deeper as the animalic notes of civet and castoreum give a furry, velvety texture to the vanilla, sandalwood and tonka bean.  This dark beauty has a more pronounced sillage than either Elfen Spring or Regal Secret.  The scent opens up and spreads out with time, but remains well mannered and comforting through its long life on the skin, a gorgeous, warm semi-gourmand oriental perfume suitable for both men and women. Fragrance notes and accords: Spices, labdanum, rose, brown sugar, amber, civet, castoreum, sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean and smoke.

Elfen Spring, Regal Secret and Eternal Voyage were all created in 2016 and are available in 50ml spray, ethanol-free Eau de Parfums.

I would like to thank Eugene and Emrys Au for the samples of these lovely fragrances.  Opinions are my own.

  • Wow! I’m mesmerized by the beauty of the imagery and the description of the scents themselves. I haven’t been able to try Auphorie yet, but the review of Eternal Voyage has hooked me. I live in the EU (Spain) and should I win I’d love a bottle of Eternal Voyage!

  • “Eternal Voyage” sounds amazing – labdanum and sugar, perfect for the winter to come. I am in Europe. And yes, “eternal voyage” would be my choice, based on the description given. Thanks for your generosity.

  • “The texture of the fragrance is almost that of watered silk – a delicate moiré Anglaise. Lustrous, creamy white blossoms and sweet mandarin contrast against repeated, rippling patterns of green melon, blue water and the scent of amber and woods.”

Sold! Beautifully painted. I am in the US. Thank you for the chance!

  • Another niche brand that I can’t experiment in my country ;-(
I must try “Miyako” especially, and these new ones seem (again) great !

Thanks for the draw. I live in EU.

  • First I have to say that the accompanying art is gorgeous! I do have a scent association with fabrics. I adore the unique smell of silk. Cotton is comforting and calm smelling. Wool smells animal like and very huggable. The review makes all the perfumes sound desirable. But, I think I would like Eternal Voyage the most. I live in the USA.

  • Ms. Gross, I would first like to compliment you on your entertaining and evocative review of the fragrances; I, too, am a seamstress and have scads of lovely fabric squirreled away, awaiting a moment of artistic inspiration. Your use of fabrics and colors in your descriptions of these scents is novel but I really ‘get’ what you mean and can picture them in my minds eye (or nose!) quite well. I would love to try a coffret of all three as they seem to be different from each other but would make a lovely wardrobe of fragrances for all circumstances and seasons. The one that appeals most to me would be Eternal Voyage as I love orientals as well as gourmands and the brown sugar note is one I love. I live in the US. Thank you for the chance!

  • I am glad I have the Auphorie Miyako from their first batch. There is something about having the first bottle design of an acclaimed fragrance. I agree with Gail’s thoughts that 90s has pretty much defined the aquatic category and it is such a challenge to re-interpret an aquatic perfume in another manner. I am intrigued how Elfen Spring has managed to do it. Similarly, Regal Secret with pineapple and fruity notes also seems exciting creating. And Eternal Voyage looks like something that also pays tribute to the classic creations of the yesteryears. My choice will be 3x10ml set. I am in the US.
As far as textile and fragrances are concerned, there is actually a long history of perfume houses drawing inspiration from textiles. Dior and Burberry have even incorporated their unique designs into packaging. I, especially, recall the hounds tooth design of Dior from its early years in perfume.

  • You couldn’t have done a better job of selling me on a line. I’m not great with fabric, but my mother is and my cousin is an amazing fiber artist. Though I don’t have any talent for working with fabric, I do have a fondness for it and frequently find myself “rescuing” antique hankies and lace, buying yardage of “things you just never see anymore,” and picking up old clothes that are beyond repair to salvage the materials.
I rarely see colors or hear music when I smell perfume, but almost all have a texture to me and they often remind me of fabric.
I would love to try the sample coffret, though I think Elfen Spring might be the one I’m most interested in. I’m glad that the aquatics are being revived and reinterpreted.
    I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I loved this review and how Gail compared fabrics and textiles to the fragrances and the notes and the way they enveloped the scent wearer! I really loved the description of Elfen Spring because one of my favorite fragrances is an aquatic floral which is rare for me because I am a fruity floral girl, but the notes of water lily and mandarin and lotus really drew me in too this fragrance. But then Regal Secret brought me back to the love of fruity florals with the pineapple, rose fig and lavender, its really hard to choose! I guess I would choose Elfen Spring if I had too! They both sound wonderful, but I have never compared a fragrance to a textile before and thanks for the chance to try these fragrances. I live in USA.

  • I like the sound of Eternal Voyage – coriander notes always sit well with me! Hm, I’ve never associated fragrances with fabric… maybe Womanity, which makes me think of squeaky cotton balls, if that counts… usually when I think of them I categorize them more in terms of colour, and whether they’re wet or dry, if that makes sense. Love Auphorie, they have a great philosophy and aesthetic, Ive only tried Miyako so I would choose the coffret of three! I live in Canada, thank you for the review and the art and the draw!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Gail, as a fellow seamstress and perfume lover, this has been one of my favorite articles this year. Thank you for it! It also doesn’t hurt that I recently got to sample a couple scents from this house. Zen is on my Christmas wish list (and, just throwing this out there, it plays well with pumpkin pie! I ate a slice just after spritzing, and they complemented each other nicely. I think it will be my Thanksgiving Day scent.) Eternal Voyage sound perfect for this time of year…
I’m in the USA. Thank you for the lovely review and draw!!!!!

  • I find it difficult to decide which perfume I would want. They all have elements that appeal to me. The “translucent character of Elfen Spring” has notes that I really like, Ragal Secret has pinapple and other notes I am also fond of, and Eternal Voyage with “with dark, smoky labdanum” appeals to me too. I think a coffret of all three would be best for me. I was trying to imagine textiles and perfumes and it doesn’t work for me. I live in the US.

  • I love the fact that Gail describes Elfen Spring in terms of texture, like watered silk. Aquatic scents (specifically salty, oceanic ones) have always been intriguing to me, and I’m curious to know how this version imagines water differently.

I’m currently in the US, and I’d naturally choose Elfen Spring! I don’t really associate fragrances with textiles, but after reading this review, maybe I should 🙂

  • They all sound really interesting, but “a gorgeous, warm, semi-gourmand oriental perfume” that reminds one of the texture of shot silk velvet is irresistible. I’m in the US, and I’d choose Eternal Voyage.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Thanks for this review! I am an addict to Auphorie perfumes and I think they are creating wonderful and precious scents. My favourite is Regal Secret.

    I live in the EU.

    Thnaks for the draw

  • Salim Khattak says:

Thanks for marvelous review. All perfumes created by Eugene and Emyrs Au of Auphorie sounds great, and being belong to warm region Elfen Spring is right to my alley.
Thanks for the draw. My choice is Elfen Spring
    I live in Peshawar, Pakistan

  • All three by reading the descriptions sound like fragrances that I’d love to have. I’m most drawn to Elfen Spring because I’m interested in the challenge of creating a contemporary aquatic. My choice to win though would be the set of all three. US 🙂

  • Very nice descriptions, but Eternal Voyage spoke to my taste. I’d like to own a bottle of that based on the mini review. I’m in Europe.

  • Wonderful review. I have really enjoyed to read it. All three of these perfumes are sounds very interesting. I have never had a chance to try any of Auphorie fragrances. If I would be as lucky to win, my choice is Elfen Spring, because I’m obsessed with the elves of Middle-Earth. And I would associate this perfume with the beautiful elves. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I never tried Auphorie perfumes, but I read about them only good things or rave reviews. I never thought to pair perfumes and textiles but I think it’s an interesting suggestion and your review is so evocative. All three fragrances are paradigmatic of different scent categories and they sound as good examples of them. Aquatic, fresh and Smoky, it’s very hard to chose. My preference go to Eternal Voyage.
    I live in EU.
    Thanks for the gorgeous draw!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Wonderful description of all the three fragrances from Auphorie. Well done Gail Gross – Sr. Contributor. Eternal Voyage mesmerize me as I love dark, warm, deep, smoky, woody scents. Never tried any of the Auphorie fragrances so far.
Would love to win a 50 ml bottle of Eternal Voyage. Thanks for the draw.
    Peshawar, Pakistan.

  • Regal Secret would be my choice- bring me to Summer please, let it envelope me…love the Art and those very in-depth descriptions of each fragrance. Thanks for a very generous draw and for making it International as well. We are pleased.
    I am in New Zealand

  • I definitely have textural associations with scent and loved your descriptions of fabrics that you associated with each scent. I know I’d love Eternal Voyage (because I tried it). I got more rose from it, but found it very addictive and actually got several compliments while trying out my sample. I didn’t get to try Elfen Spring but I’m kind of curious about it now. Hmmm.
    Thanks for the generous draw!
    I’m in the USA.

  • Eternal Voyage appeals to me , but I would love the opportunity of the the samples of all three. I live in the USA and want to thank you for this opportunity.

  • Very excited to see new offerings from this extremely talented duo. There will be many waiting to see what the follow-up to Miyako will be! Please include me in this excellent draw. Eternal Voyage is calling to me :). Canada please!

  • Lovely reviews and it seems that Auphorie creates awesome scents. Eternal Voyage is the one that appeals mostly to me. I live in the EU and I’d love to win a bottle of Eternal Voyage!

  • I loved the description of Eternal Voyage. I like pepper notes and the drydown of civil and castoreum mingling with vanilla sounds truly velvety. I often get images of velvet when I wear leathery or peppery fragrances.
I’d love to have the chance to win the 10ml sample collection.
    I live in the USA.

  • Very interesting review with the comparision of fragrances and fabrics. I love description of Elfen Spring cause I can imagine that wearing aquatic fragrance with water notes, melon, water lilly and lotus notes gives us as “light” feeling as is the feeling when touching a watered silk. But I would choose for myself “dark” Eternal Voyage. I am in EU. Thanks

  • I would choose Eternal Voyage, when I try to imagine the notes together, I can almost feel a light, delicate silk or georgette on my skin. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the EU.

  • I have never tried anything by Au brothers and I hope I am going to be lucky this time. I suppose all three fragrances are lovely. Regal Secret captured my attention because of the pineapple note. I live in EU, thanks for the draw!

  • Hmmm, the article causes me to think of my sewing days (no time now). I never cared for the scent of the fabric store, something too chemical for me. Maybe the texture or weight of a fabric would be more of a comparison for me. The scents sound amazing. I would not be able to choose, so it would be the 3×10 should I be lucky enough to win. Thanks for the draw.

  • I think they all sound wonderful and unique (I love the fabric associations!) and I would pick “dark, smoky labdanum spiced with a breath of cumin, coriander and some sort of peppery accord” in Eternal Voyage. I hope fragrances from Auphorie are going to be more available in Europe soon! I live I the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’ve been very keen to try Auphorie since I read about them earlier this year. Their fragrances sound inspired! I don’t really associate perfume with fabrics, but one of my favourite olfactory surprises is when I pick up a sweater or scarf that I’ve already worn and burst of the perfume I was wearing hits me. It instantly brings me back to the night that I wore it. So wonderful. All three of these sound lovely, but Eternal Voyage sounds just perfect for me. I love spice, amber, labdanum, and rose and think that civet and castoreum would add the perfect touch of drama!

I live in Canada and would love to win Eternal Voyage.

  • While I am recently more into heavier and oriental scents, I admire the way Gail described these three and I could almost smell them. Fragrances are like fabric, they cover our bodies and contribute to our image, so I think the metaphor is excellent. I think I would like to try Elfen Spring because of the lily of the valley note I love. Thank you for so great read. I live in the EU.

  • I haven’t tried Auphorie fragrances yet, so I can only try to imagine their smell having no previous experiences to rely on. I think I would choose Eternal voyage because of the wonderful name and the combination of amber, pepper and sugary-caramel accords. I’m in the EU, thank you for the draw!

  • That is very interesting how you took fabric and used it to describe the perfumes. I love creative takes! Eternal Voyage sounds the most like what I’d like to be wearing right now, but I loved the descriptions and art work for all of them. Well done! And thank you to the perfumers for the draw. USA

  • I loved reading the review! Eternal Voyage sounds the most interesting to me because I’m curious to smell caramelized brown sugar in a perfume.
Sorry, but I don’t assoicate fragrance with textiles.
Thanks for the chance to sniff! I’d love to win Eternal Voyage
    (EU)

  • They all sound really awesome! Eternal Voyage seems very much up my alley, because pepper…and amber… I’d choose a full bottle. Thank you for the draw!
    I live in Europe

  • Very interesting review! Auphorie seems to be a really niche and outstanding brand and the fragrances must be beautiful. I would love to try Eternal Voyage. I’m in the EU, thanks for the draw.

  • My choice would be Regal Secret because I miss summer so much and I hope this fragrance could be able to create a sunny-day-on-a beach feeling: “The initial bergamot, pineapple and juicy fruits create a refreshing cologne-like effect that satisfies my craving for citrus. Regal Secret recalls the classic, cooling scents I so liberally applied long ago and brings back memories of sunny days, the buzz of cicadas and hot afternoons relaxing in the shade of sprawling live oaks”. Thank you for the review. I live in Poland, EU.

  • I have recently started experimenting with sewing and I associate many things, including fragrances, with fabrics. The light and airy Auphorie perfumes bring silk, chiffon and soft cotton to mind.

I live in Europe and I’m in for Eternal Voyage bottle. Thanks!

  • While I am usually more than a little afraid on animalic notes, I think I will risk this time and choose Eternal Voyage with civet and castoreum which “give a furry, velvety texture to the vanilla, sandalwood and tonka bean” because I love tonka bean and I believe this perfume is perfectly balanced and isn’t going to be too heavy. I regret it is still impossible to try Auphorie scents here in Europe, so thank you so much for the chance! EU.

  • Yay! More great fragrances from Au brothers! I am at a loss which one would be my favorite and I think I would choose Elfen Spring because it’s the most mysterious one of all three.

I have never thought of the association between fragrances and textiles, so I look forward to feel this cool watered silk on my skin.

Thank you for the draw. I live in Norway.

  • I guess I will join the club of readers fascinated with the decscription of Eternal Voyage:
“I am immediately taken with dark, smoky labdanum spiced with a breath of cumin, coriander and some sort of peppery accord. Within minutes this dusky, peppery scent is highlighted with notes of sweet, caramelized brown sugar, burnt crème and amber that give a luscious iridescence to the fragrance, akin to the visual effect and feel of shot silk velvet (changeant or nacre velvet). The colors of Eternal Voyage are hues of rich rose and russet, laced and threaded through with reflective golden amber.” So promising! Thank you for the draw, I would love to win and smell this perfume.

The pictures are awesome. Each of them tells a beautiful story as, I hope, the fragrances do. I am choosing Eternal Voyage because of the dandelions which I love!
I am in the EU, thank you for the draw and the reviews!

  • Amazing read. I’ve never smelled anything from this house so I’ll love the coffret. I’m in Canada
