New Perfume Review: Vero.Profumo Rozy Extrait de Parfum by Vero Kern + Sorceress of the Senses Draw

The Sick Rose by William Blake (1757 1827)

O Rose thou art sick.

The invisible worm,

That flies in the night

In the howling storm:

Has found out thy bed

Of crimson joy:

And his dark secret love

Does thy life destroy.

This extraordinary short two-verse poem by visionary English poet William Blake from Songs of Innocence and of Experience is what I visualise as Vero Kern’s brutal and enormous rosaceous masterpiece detonates across skin.  Blake’s poem is a mysterious, veiled work, analysed as an allegory marital infidelity, religious persecution and delirium, corruption of the flesh and the perils of temptation. Whatever Blake intended, the swirl of imagery is powerful and suggestive, a lusty rose, sick with discovery and illicit love. A tenebrous backdrop of lashing night, shadows and carnal enigma. As always with Blake, an undertow of religious mania added a frisson of danger and madness to proceedings.

Vero Kern’s burnished Rozy triptych is now complete with the official launch of her powerful extrait at the recent smorgasbord of niche concurrent with Esxence 2015 in Milan . Rozy Eau de Parfum and Rozy Voile d’Extrait launched last year, side by sensual side. The Voile concentrations are my preferred Vero formulae; they seem to have both transparency and fierce tenacity. The Kiki Voile d’Extrait is unbearably sublime. I wear it and vanish into a world of seared lilac skies, herbal loam and surreal candyfloss trees.

Rozy Extrait is Vero’s abstracted rose, part real, part cinematic, part glorious imagining, inspired by the magnificent force of nature Anna Magnani, the great Italian actress whose personality and acting style has never been equaled. She combined a brutal sense of realism with earthy simmering sensuality. All things that swirl, howl and coalesce in all three incarnations of Rozy in varying degrees. The eau de parfum is sweeter, jammier and more voluptuous, the voile far more confrontational, a honeyed animalism tearing at the rose.

The Rozy Extrait de Parfum is quite the finale, a huge sunset of crimson and scarlet tones thrown across a brooding sky. An operatic rose, a coloratura voice on a windswept open stage. My oh my it packs quite the olfactive punch. The rose is a masterly marriage of naturals and fabulous plasticky synthetics, lending the finished bloom a bruised, angry tonality.

Vero adores her fruits for musky sexiness and playful fun so cassis and melon add a mix of bitter aquatic counterbalance to the incandescent rose. And honey… no-one drizzles honey through scent like Vero, it becomes animalic, sweet and waxen, pollen-like, smoky in the base. There is a porny dose of tuberose in the extrait, laced in alongside the rose; it’s hard to detect at first, but slowly unfurls its indolic presence as the rosy waves roll out over skin like shockwaves. The rose needs the whiteness, the colder reflection. Otherwise the rubicund array on swaggering show would burn out our minds.

The addition of nutmeg and sticky labdanum reinforces the base against the roar of screeching blooms. It’s a very delicate balancing act and there are moments wearing the Extrait where the senses feel under assault. But this is Vero Kern’s work, nothing is quite what is seems; behind the enormous passion play of her deeply felt Rozy rose, there is immense personal calm and intricate sensuousness. Each part of this Rozy triptych has provided a different hue or facet of Vero’s imagined beauteous rose, a bloom she has defiantly re-orchestrated for a troubled and judgmental world.

They may well be her masterworks; such is the definition and skill of each part of this trio. I will always worship at the shrine of Onda, but these Rozy works are troubling in their obsessional detailing. Each one has elements that demand revisiting: the Nahéma-like collision of peach, lilac and rose in the EDP, the strident 80s powerberry dazzle of cassis meets tuberose over rose in the Voile and last but not least the shocking bittersweet dream of animalic honey on petals and spice in the daunting extrait. Each one is a separate window into the rose’s complex soul, bold and exacting. There are those of us that are obsessed by these demanding perfumes, aware that Vero is a sorceress of the senses.

Vero Kern's work is art, worn to provoke and seduce. Rozy Extrait de Parfum is an illicit bed of crimson joy. Lie down with caution, senses will erode and empires fall.

  • I adore all of Vero’s creations, I think Mito VdE is probably my favorite. This part is especially wonderful.

I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!!

  • I love the parallels you draw between the stage performance and the rose in this scent. I’m reminded of bold costuming and stage design that’s as much a performance as the star herself. Really nicely done!

US resident, and very excited about this draw!

  • Diehard Vero fan here! Would love a porny dose of this one! Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • This review left me feeling a bit breathless, as if the haze that is Rozy had settled around me. Loved the pictures too, they are exactly as I imagine the scent to be. I have dabbed the EdP and was very impressed…the Extrait must need a bit of confidence to pull off.
Would love to sample it and I am in Australia.

  • I love the comparison analysis between the eau de parfum, extrait and voile. This sounds like an amazing rose! I have not tried any of the line but this definitely sounds a good place to start!
    I am in the US.

  • The photos chosen for this review are amazing and they perfectly illustrate the verbal descriptions of the perfumes. I’ve smelled the first two iterations of Rozy. The photos also match the way the perfumes smell!
    I’m in the US.

  • I loved the analysis on Blake’s poem as the perfect introduction to a wonderful match between images and text in the perfumes description
    I live in Israel
    thanks for the draw

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I am intrigued by the fact that Vero has incorporated huge dose of tuberose, too which is not apparent at first but eventually reveals itself over time. similarly, the first picture reminded me of McQueen and it’s sad he went so soon. thanks so much for the draw. I am in the US

  • I loved the poem you’ve chosen Foxy!Quite the word indeed!I wasn’t swayed by Rozy, neither in Voile or EdP,although I tried several times to fall under the spell. So I’m really curious to know if the extrait will be the ultimate Rozy potion, the one that will unlock the Rozy secrets I’m so willing to find.

  • “An operatic rose, a coloratura voice on a windswept open stage.” I’m sold! I live in London, UK and would love to smell this beauty, thanks for the chance.

  • I think there are a lot of us worshipping at the throne of Onda. I fell hard for Rubj too. Your review of Rozy is wonderful. I haven’t tried it yet but from your description I am confident it will be just as magical as the rest of the line. Who wouldn’t want to smell like an illicit bed of crimson joy?
    I’m in the US.

  • great review – as poetic as Vero’s scents! the choice of this particular Blake’s poem was perfect. i also loved the artwork, very seductive…

i actually tried Vero’s creations for the first time in Campomarzio in Rome – all their 3 shops there are simply great, with fantastic personnel – so thank you very much for the draw! i am in EU

  • I enjoyed the analysis of Blake’s poem for an introduction and the way that the images/photos which are really amazing perfectly match with the descriptions of the perfume by TSF because this is how it really must smell both Rozy Eau de Parfum and Rozy Voile d’Extrait.
I thank you for this lovely review which it has really drawn my attention to really want to smell this Vero profumo creation.
    I am in EU.

  • The paragraph under the Nick Knight Flowers painting is beautifully written and evocative. I’m in the US.

  • What a stunning review! Seldom have I read a description that has highlighted the notes of a perfume in such lush prose. I would love to try the extrait; I’m in the US.

  • A “bruised, angry tonality?” Sign me up! I like to try demanding perfumes, and if Rozy is half as dramatic as this review I bet it would be a delightful ride. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • ” But this is Vero Kern’s work, nothing is quite what is seems; behind the enormous passion play of her deeply felt Rozy rose, there is immense personal calm and intricate sensuousness”. Oh yeah… bring it on, as Vero is LEGEND. The review of Rozy Extrait was stunning and the art chosen breathtaking and eerily in sync with each paragraph. Canada reader wanting rozy. Have the EDP and must have this

  • I’ve only tried Rubj edP, but the cumin was a bit much for me. This one sounds really interesting though – typically I don’t do well with honey, but perhaps with rose it could be really good. The Silver Fox makes this sound so sultry and sexy, I’d love to try it!

  • Thanks for the review and the poem. Good way to start the day contemplating this. I never tried Rozy and would love to.
    I live in Germany.

  • The Blake poem, the artwork, and phrases like “…a lusty rose, sick with discovery and illicit love,” all contribute mightily to making Rozy extract a must-try, even though Rose is often a difficult note for me. I’m in the U.S.

  • Wow! What a review – such language I copied one sentence in awe “A tenebrous backdrop of lashing night, shadows and carnal enigma.” Only to find another and another. I see many other are similarly struck. The art is wonderful too. I hope I dream about this tonight. Thanks! I am in the US.

  • Very entertaining review for what sounds like a faboulous scent. I love the description of ” a coloratura on a windswept stage.
Enjoyed the Nick Knight photos too.
    Thanks for the draw opportunity.

  • This review makes it sound wonderfully exciting and sexy 🙂 I am in the US, thank you.

  • It is always the greatest pleasure to read the author’s articles on Vero Kern’s perfumes. It is obvious that The Silver Fox feels them in a special way. The atmosphere built around Vero’s perfumes is fantastic. I was waiting for this review, although I have not tried Rozy as Extrait de Parfum variation. Voile d’extrait is a stunning perfume, so I expect nothing less from the extrait. I love to read about differences between three Rozys.
I like the context in which fruits, honey and tuberose are pointed out. The conclusion is my favorite. It is about Rozy extrait but, at the same time, also on Vero’s art generally: ” Vero Kern’s work is art, worn to provoke and seduce. Rozy Extrait de Parfum is an illicit bed of crimson joy.” I am in Croatia. Thank you.

  • Vero.Profumo is a beautiful house that always creates top notch fragrances. Rose fragrances always remind me of my mother, who simply adores them. I should pick her up a bottle of this for mother’s day. I really enjoyed the detailed description of the scent, it made me feel like I was experiencing the journey as well! I’m in Canada and thanks.

  • Mildly to put, I love The Silver Fox’ reviews. This one is no exception.
A rose with coloratura voice and a porny dose of tuberose – oh, I think I can handle their ‘battle’. I say ‘Yes!’ to provoking and seducing when it comes to fragrances, but pity I have never tried any of Vero Kern’s creations.
Thank you for the draw! I am in Bulgaria (EU)

I enjoyed TSF’s review of Rozy and his analogy of the fragrance to Anna Magnani (she combined a brutal sense of realism with earthy simmering sensuality). I live in the U.S.

I enjoyed TSF’s review of Rozy and his analogy of the fragrance to Anna Magnani (she combined a brutal sense of realism with earthy simmering sensuality). I live in the U.S.

  • I love how TSF gives life to his reviews with phrases like “the roar of screeching blooms.” And makes me want Rozy even more! I’m in the US.

  • I love the comparison between the William Blake poem and this fragrance. A rose has so many meanings, both good and bad. This fragrance, however, is definitely on the good side! The mix of rose, fruits, and honey sound absolutely incredible!
