New Perfume Review: Strange Invisible Perfumes Emerald Moss + Yerbe Mate Draw

Strange Invisible Perfumes has announced the Reserve Series, “a rare collection of limited-batch botanical perfumes.” The collection is based on small batches of exquisite materials, which by their nature, make themselves limited editions. ”Each perfume stirs the sense with layered notes of beauty, eros and intrigue.” Emerald Moss is the stunning debut from The Reserve Series, both in color as well as aroma. A gemstone green liquid shines from the bottle as if lit from within. “The inspiration for this fragrance was originally sparked by a shipment I received of mate extract that I had never worked with before,” says perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis, “It had a dense, jewel-green color that made me think of South America and moss-covered ruins.” The Brazilian mate does not let down- both in the opulent visual of the jus itself and the green backbone of Emerald Moss.

yerba mate tea

A spritz of an almost lemongrass tea opens Emerald Moss, a melange of Hawaiian temple mandarin and ginger with the piquant top notes of mate itself. This impression soon gives way to the jungle covered Brazilian temple green note suggested in the description. Mate lends a less powdered oakmoss type note which gives the perfume its emerald color as well as moss in the title. An immediately clean and calmly glamorous body as luminous as the jewel colored perfume- to inhale is to refresh, surely as effective as the yerba mate drank in place of coffee.

From within the mossen temple the heart beat of rose is drumming up a floral beat encouraged by Californian lavender. The spicy flickering of ginger shines through the depths of mate and rose until peaking in what Alexandra describes as, “…almost like the most gorgeous soap imaginable.” This leaves one with the feeling of being completely cleansed- an olfactory reset button for the esthetic and physical mind. The kus ruh adds to this not-quite powder note and eases the perfume into dry down, which instead of resting on one note, fades like the memories of a world wide tour- which Emerald Moss provides in globally sourced materials from Maui to the foothills of the Himalayas. As committed to the distillation of plant materials (such as a hydro-distilled first distillation rose) as they are to working with the family farms (which provide the Maui ginger and lavender from Santa Barbara)- Strange Invisible Perfumes continues to set the standard for ethical/ecological business.

Emerald Moss is a perfume with which I would scent the world had I the capability- the very air of the Garden of Eden this planet we live on actually could be.

  • I want to try because the image is so arresting, and I love deep green scents, especialy if they contain rose. My favorite SIP scent is ‘Aquarian Rose’.

  • I think the notes of this one sound really intriguing – mate, ginger, mandarin, kus ruh. An exotic combination which apparently smells like the best soap imaginable! I’ve yet to experience any creations from SIP, but I’d love for this to be my first! Thanks for the draw, I’m a US reader!

  • Once again I am beguiled by the descriptions of this perfume:
“…I would scent the world had I the capability- the very air of the Garden of Eden this planet we live on actually could be.” WOW!
I have never smelled any SI Perfumes but would so love to try one, especially Emerald Moss!
    Thank you

Not only am I enchanted by the notes–especially the mate, which is in the holly family, one of my personal symbols–but also the sourcing of these precious materials. I believe this would be heaven to sniff!

Fire and Cream is a favorite of mine from SIP. I am in the US and grateful for the draw!

This green perfume with some floral elements almost make me wonder if it is the modern version of original dioressence..even the liquid is emerald green, just like original dioressence..since Emerald Moss has been introduced, it is being discussed on forums..my favorite SIP is Fire and Cream..thanks for the lovely draw. I am in the US

  • I love mossy scents and haven’t had the chance to try anything from SIP- Black Rosette sounds lovely as well though. I’m in the US.

  • Alexandra Balahoutis perfumes are one of the best perfumes I’ve ever worn. I really love this brand.
My favourite perfume is Magazine Street.

  • I haven’t tried any SI perfumes yet but Emerald Moss sounds like the place to start. The mate note really intrigues me and most mossy scents work well for me. I’m in the U.S. Thank you!

  • I would love to try Emerald Moss because it sounds very unique. My favorite is Fire and Cream. I’m in the U.S.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • The ingredients and sourcing for them read like something out of a Creed copy writer’s so I will take them with a grain of salt. However, the inclusion of mate has piqued my interest. the liquid’s color and the bottle are gorgeous. I’ve yet to try any Strange Invisible Perfumes so this one may very well become my favorite shall I be chosen in the draw.

I am in the US. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • The color is amazing! And the notes sound like a night out with magic! I love her perfume Fire & Cream which a friend let me share 🙂 Lucky me. I would love to try this and thanks for the opportunity. Ms Balahoutis strikes me as one of the most creative perfumes around, far reaching in her imagination.I am in the US

I’m attracted to the color green as it was my mom’s favorite color. I find myself being more drawn to this shade lately too. This one is beautiful! The natural components seem uplifting and would be a really lovely fragrance to wear. I’d definitely like to try this. I’m in the U.S.

  • I would love to try this scent because I love Green Scents, and this sounds amazing. Green, exotic, fresh=–what’s not to love?
    Thanks for the drawing.
    I live in the U.S.

  • i love the notes, but even more than that, the color of this perfume. i would actually consider to get a bottle to have that little mossy gem (the color i mean) around. in fact, i am (as i type) wearing a moss-green prehnite — again, because that color does something to me 🙂 so, yes, i would love to try this perfume. my favorite is black rosette: peat and tea and roses. (oh, but also her divine magnolia-vetiver, magazine street.)

  • This bottle is such a visual stunner and I love the name, Emerald Moss. The mention of lavender, one of my favorite smells even when it’s a background player, makes this irresistible. USA

  • Fire and Cream is my favorite SIP, however there are so many more I want to try!
Emerald Moss looks like a natural gem of a scent. First the visuals drew me in, then the description of “the feeling of being completely cleansed- an olfactory reset button for the esthetic and physical mind.” More than any set of notes, the feelings evoked matter most.
Thank you for the review and draw

I would like to try this to experience “the very air of the Garden of Eden this planet we live on actually could be”. I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing an SIP Perfume.

  • The moss and ginger are amazing, I bet. A fantastic alternative to citrus, which I honestly love. It’s compelling, and I think it would work very well in Florida, where I live.

  • At this moment, I am drinking mate from a gourde. However I am not quite daring enough to spill some on my shirt, since it is one of my favorites.

    Thanks from Wisconsin, USA.

  • I would love to try the the description sounds so interesting. Comparing it to the air in the garden of Eden caught my attention. I have not had a. Chance to try any SIP yet, I live in the US thanks!

  • TheFarmGirl says:

They just put out an email that 100 samples were available of this. I’m excited to smell it! I’m a daily drinker of Yerba mate, and this sounds intriguing. Used to live near the storefront in Venice, and at that time got to smell the line of perfumes… settled on ‘Prima Ballerina’ as the one I couldn’t live without (rose, sagebrush). Wish I could buy samples of others, as they are beautifully made natural perfumes.
