New Perfume Review: STASH SJP (Sarah Jessica Parker/Firmenich) + Celebrity Fragrance Done Right Draw

To say I was excited about the new STASH SJP fragrance was pretty much an understatement.  Am I a particular fan of Sarah Jessica Parker you might ask?  The answer is no, but I do believe she has an excellent nose and I have been quite taken with several of her previous scents. I am still a huge fan of Lovely and I really believe Covet was underrated in many respects.  Personally, they both exuded an air of elegance that I found rather appealing.  Neither were over the top – they both fit into a special range of products that’s appealing to fashionable celebrity everybodies and the fashionably unfashionable nobodies alike.  In other words, they were (still are) celebrity scents that had more merit than many run of the mill dime a dozen celebrity scents.

It’s no secret that Sarah had a very key role in the development of Lovely.   Chandler Burr did a wonderful job of documenting this in his book, The Perfect Scent.  If you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend it.  It truly is a fascinating look into Sarah’s perfume psyche.   It’s very clear that she gives a damn about what her name is representing. To that end, she formed her own company, SJPBeauty to better represent where she wanted to go with her fragrances.  The first of the fragrances is unisex… Stash which launched at  Ulta.

Let me start out by saying that the bottle for the perfume is stunning.  The weight and shape of it is very complimentary to what it contains.  The typeset of the gold handwriting on a black label gives an air of being personal and when light catches it a certain way it really pops.  The moment I picked up the bottle I was impressed.  When I made that first spray the entire heart and soul of the perfume became immediately evident.  One is immediately presented with a slightly boozy like and “cedarcentric” (my own term for cedar heavy fragrances) aroma that is woody to the extreme.  There is a slight hint of grapefruit, but it is drown out with dark cedar woods that it is almost imperceptible after a very few minutes.

The overall impression is warm and dry…very, very dry.  I mean so dry as it could almost catch on fire dry.   Imagine being in the desert with a bunch of cedar planks in dry wind with sagebrush blowing around adding their sharp sweet bitter odor to the air.

As the mid starts to develop a peppery aspect comes into play, which again, adds to make for a hot and dry experience.  However, the main aspect of the fragrance with no doubt whatsoever is Cedar.  It is very reminiscent of the famous cedar accord used by Comme Des Garcons in a pretty good number of their fragrances.  I read somewhere that Sarah is a fan of the house and judging by what I am smelling, I am not surprised.  That vibe is definitely here and done well.  In particular it reminds me Comme des Garcons for H&M, but amped up considerably.  I am also reminded of the wonderful Tumulte pour Homme by Christian Lacroix.  For those lamenting the loss of those two, rejoice!  This will fit in very well.  That said, I find this fragrance leaning more toward traditionally masculine than feminine.  Still, we all know how subjective that issue is…

The drydown remains dry as a bone.  Vetiver makes its presence known in the mids, but when the cedar finally starts to pull back it’s all about vetiver.  There is a slight patchouli looming in the backrgound, but it certainly isn’t as potent as I would like it to be.  To my nose, it could have used a bit more to balance out the ever present cedar and vetiver.  There is also a musky aspect that is reminiscent of the musk in Lovely, but presented in a completely different manner.  Here it much more understated, but present enough to give a dirty effect that adds to the character of the composition.

Overall, the fragrance is satisfying to the senses.  As mentioned earlier it is very “cedarcentric” in that cedar makes up the vast majority of the fragrance.  I think that for many of us, this ultra woody cedar has already been visited a little much.  However, there is no arguing this is a great scent and it certainly has the potential to introduce a huge group to the market that may not be familiar or have easy access to similar cedar laden offerings from Comme des Garcons or any other similar creation.

I can easily see Stash SJP gaining many fans in the mainstream and still keeping perfumistas happy.  Yes, indeed, she’s done it again.

  • It is great how Sarah Jessica Parker is highly involved in the formulation process of her fragrances. I must say I have been surprised to see mention of Tumulte Pour Homme which is one of the best cedar fragrances in my collection. I do enjoy cedar. Thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

P.S. I was a huge fan of Sex and the City and have watched all seasons plus movies. I enjoyed Carrie Bradshaw’s conversations with her girlfriends more than anything else in the show as well as the movie.

  • Great review Aaron, thanks! You gave a completely new perspective than that shared on Fragrantica and some of the other review sites, and a more open-minded one I think. I’ve been excited about Stash since I heard about it, and I really need a good cedar scent. Fave Carrie Bradshaw moment – every time she sits down at her desk in front of the window and writes. I live in Canada, thanks!

  • I am glad that Sarah Jessica Parker now can make the perfumes she wants and Stash SJP sounds really worth a trip to my local ULTA in LA Just for the Cedar which I love. Glad that it wears masculine and if I like it as much as Aaron I will buy the bottle. I like the bottle as well
    Very thoughtful
    Well written review
My favorite scene with Carrie Bradshaw when she tells Big she’s moving to Paris
My wife and I watched every episode but didn’t see the movies

  • The drydown is dry as a bone!! I like this very much. My favourite perfume with Cedar is Caligna. I

    Thanks for the winderful review.
Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Very lovely review, so interesting. I like cedar, it has so nice forest scent. I never seen any scene of Sex in the City, that kind of serials are absolutely not my type. But I would like to try that perfume, sounds interesting from the review. I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.

I enjoyed that Aaron appreciates SJP’s sense of scent without being a fan of her because, frankly, that’s where I fall too! So lovely to hear it is a cedar-laden frag, as that’s a favorite note. Besides the Bois series for Serge, I enjoy Tumulte as well. Sex in the City was a decent enough guilty pleasure…but I just couldn’t enjoy Carrie as a character! Samantha was where it was at, plus Kim Cattrall was a Parure fan. Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US!

  • Aaron, thank you for reviewing Stash. I feel like we can celebrate a rare victory in the celebrity fragrance games. I’m an admirer of SJP now more than ever. Her style is appealing – smart, approachable, and intriguing in a way that makes me want to know more.

I do like cedar in fragrance very much. It is soothing and distinctive but not overwhelming on my skin. Infusion d’Iris comes to mind as a fragrance with a cedar note I love. I am in the US. Thank you to Ulta for the draw and for making Stash accessible.

Favorite Carrie moment (there are so many) might be when she told Charlotte she couldn’t believe Charlotte had proposed to Trey, and that he replied with “alrighty.” Hilarious, right on the mark for reading the situation, and a bit of sad foreshadowing, too.

  • Thanks for the review! My lament is its limited availability. I can’t believe there’s no Ulta in NYC(except in Queens, but hard to get to). I would love to be able to try it. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Loved the review! I am a BIG fan of SJP fragrances and I, too, felt Covet was underrated. Covet was an incredibly unique scent that I’ve yet to find a replacement for.

I love this new fragrance. It is AMAZING! I love the cedar/woody notes. But I also get a lot of the Olibanum, which I understand is also known as frankincense. I get a bit of a “hippy” vibe to this perfume. It’s just plain sexy on me. And it smells amazing on my boyfriend, too. The elixir oil is the best product. Almost surpassing the EDP. It has great longevity and I love that I can put it in my hair.

I was a big fan of Sex In The City and have a million favorite moments so I couldn’t name just one. I am just a huge fan girl of anything Sarah Jessica Parker does and can’t wait for her new show Divorce.

    I live in the U.S.

Great to hear about another fragrance by SJP. Dry woody scent sounds perfect for the autumn time.
I am a big fan of Sarah and I love Sex in the City (favorite scene: Carrie’s desperate attempts to get back her lost/stolen shoes).
I live in the EU. Thanks for the review!

  • I have had Lovely and Covet, and loved them both. My favorite scene: running into Big in the Paris Hotel, all the way the the end of that episode….loved it!
I really would love to try this new SJP fragrance. Thanks for the review. Please enter me. Thanks. I live in the USA.

  • I do agree with Aaron s review that Stash s bottle is stunning. This kind of simplicity is what I love. Aaron speaks about very dry scent, very “cedarcentric” and a bit more on masculine side. I have only few fragrances with dominant cedar note so it would be nice to try this.
I had never had an opportunity to watch Sex in the City but I know that Sarah J.P. is in a leading role there.:) I live in EU. Thanks for this giveaway.

  • I love the review. Cannot wait to try Stash after my more-than-good experiences with the previous SJP perfumes. Do you believe that I have never watched “Sex in the city”? Seems that I am missing a lot 😉

  • I love cedar notes and to be honest, I wouldn’t expect them in a celebrity scent. I believe this is a unique perfume worth trying, a true gem among so many boring celebrity fragrances. I’d love to verify my impressions about stash. I live in the EU and thanks for the draw!

  • Nice review and the notes sound very good. Olibanum and massoia wood in a celebrity fragrance – wow! I have to try this! I am in the EU.

  • I love watching Sex and the City and I love Carrie, she is so lively and honest, I wish I was more like her 🙂 I think Lovely was a perfect scent for someone like Carrie and I am curious about Stash. Is it more mature and unisex? I’d love to test it. I live in Europe.

  • I thought Aaron’s review of the “cedarcentric” Stash SJP highlighted all the wonderful aspects I look for in a fragrance and I can’t wait to try it! I live in the US and love cedar (“woody to the extreme”). My favorite Carrie Bradshaw moment in Sex in the City is in The Real Me episode where Carrie walks down the runway, falls, gets up and walks again.

  • Great review. This one sounds very interesting. Very different compared to other celeb scents. I’m definitely a fan of cedar so this fragrance peaks my interest. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • I was looking forward to a review of this fragrance because I’d read about Sarah Jessica Parker’s involvement in the creation of Lovely in The Perfect Scent and have been waiting to see when she would eventually make the mystery scent she talked about making. It doesn’t sound like Stash is it (if I remember, the ‘secret’ scent was a little dirtier and more animalic), but Stash sounds good nonetheless.

I’m not always a fan of cedar in fragrances (it sometimes comes off as too insistent to me – perhaps there is a particular chemical that causes this reaction?) but I can really enjoy it when it’s done well. I’d love to give Stash a try.

Is it terrible to admit that I’ve only watched the Sex and the City movie? The show aired during my high school years and I had a very academic childhood with not a television in sight! Now, of course, I just stream shows on my computer – maybe I should add it to the list!

I’m in the US – thanks for the review and the draw!
