One thing that is always appreciated in any art form is authenticity.  The feeling that you are experiencing a work that could only have come from one source, and created in a bold enough way that no one else could have produced it.  Authenticity in perfume is why I keep coming back for more new scents – that thrill of recognition, of ignition even, in the senses that can recognize vitality in a composition. .

Such vitality can work wonders on my preconceived notions about my tastes in perfume as well.  A well-made scent can contain accords and notes that I wouldn’t dab on my wrist with a ten foot pole, but present them in new ways that open up fantastic new perspectives.  Such it is with Parfumerie Générale new release, Bouquet Massai 10.1 – a fragrance that proudly contains notes of both peony and magnolia, which have not in the past been high on my list of scents I enjoy. Fiercely independent perfumer Pierre Guillaume  has created an entire collection called Perfume Reworks      where  from time to time he revisits scents from his Collection Numéraire adding new facets. It is important to understand that his new release Bouquet Massai 10.1 is not a flanker, although there is common DNA to Parfumerie Générale’s massive hit Aomassai (2006) – a perfume featuring bitterness and smoke combined with the sweetness of hazelnuts and caramel

Ancestral African - Mythology

But in Bouquet Massai 10.1, those two notes are exactly what is needed to both sharpen the scent and also soften its edges, because this fragrance is based around a coffee/cashmeran accord, tolu balsam and sandalwood – plus a note of karo karounde (which is rather like an earthy, herbal jasmine.) The result is a sweetly bitter, perfectly rounded and exotically-tinged floral oriental scent that works fantastically on both sexes, in a way that is neither expected nor dull.  The coffee/cashmeran accord pulses quite strongly and confidently in the heart of this scent, but it is only truly glimpsed through the prism of what surrounds it – mainly the floral aspects and the combined sweetness of the sandalwood and karo karounde.

MeliyArt-Graphik- fashion fantasy

There’s a yin and yang tension embedded in this scent that is delicious – your nose encounters the tannic bitterness of the coffee accord, but it will also be pulled simultaneously into both lightly floating floral and dessert-sweet directions throughout its time on the skin.

Bouquet Massai 10.1 is indeed a floral ritual and I found myself fascinated by it.  There’s a sense of real discovery in Bouquet Massai 10.1 – Pierre Guillaume is an artist allowing his chosen accords to live different lives in parallel universes.   In this instance, the unusual gravity of oh-so-proper peony juxtaposed with leathery tolu balsam, or the unexpected inclusion of an African shrub note that mimics jasmine, but with sharp, herbal edges. The sillage and the longevity are both average.  The true power in Bouquet Massai is in how the notes are deployed and developed here in such unique combinations.  This is not a perfume that needs get loud or go on for too long to tell you where you’re headed.

All in all, Bouquet Massai 10.1 is a daringly original scent, and more than a meditation on a past perfume. It’s a fragrance  that begs to be worn.

Notes:  Peony, magnolia, coffee, cashmeran, sandalwood, karo karounde, tolu balsam

  • I would love to try this! It sounds really interesting. I’m imagining it right now but am not sure I am getting it quite right.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Sounds wonderful! Peony, coffee, karo karounde _ very interesting scents that create an exceptionel perfume. I haven’t fester a perfume from Parfumerie Generäle yet.

  • I would like to try a note of karo karounde, sounds amazing!
I adore Aomassai (2006), it’s one of the best gourmand scents.
Thank you for the draw! I live in Italy.

  • Wonderful review. This perfume sounds incredibly fabulous, I would very like to try it. I have never had a chance to try any perfume of Parfumerie Generale. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I love the notes in this one and if I am not mistaken karo karounde is used in two fragrances I love already L’Artisan Timbuktu and Cartier Panthere. I am also a huge fan of the gorgeous original Aomassai. I wish Pierre would revisit the now long discontinued Mio Bjao another gorgeous gourmand. I am in the US and can’t wait to try this one.

  • This sounds intriging! Notes I’ve never heard of, peony and coffee! Love to sample it, at least! I love Isparta. Don’t know enough of the line to say which one I’d like an update to. In the US

  • This sounds amazing and I can’t wait to try it! Karo Karounde, Coffee, and florals has me intrigued to see how they develop. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • What an intriguing review – although described exquisitely, it’s so hard for me to imagine this scent on my skin. A floral gourmand? That sounds spectacular. I am really enjoying the gourmands these days, so the coffee + dessert sweet combined with the florals sounds so cool. I haven’t tried anything from PG – I’d love to try this. Thanks so much for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • This definitely sounds like an interesting mix of notes, some that do not sound at all good together; I like coffee and I love magnolia but cannot see them together. Otherwise sounds beautiful!
    thank you for the draw.

  • Very interesting combinations in this scent and I am loving the coffee and sweet ‘push me-pull you’ combo. Interestingly was discussing Pierre Guillaume tonight, so he is totally on my radar. Unfortunately i have not tried any Parfumerie Generale scents. I am in the UK, cheers for the draw.

  • I am interested because even though Boquet Aomassi is a rework of original Aomassi, it is original enough not to feel like like a flanker. It also remains a floral composition with an innovative twist. My favorite from the line is L’Ombre Fauve but the one I would like Pierre to re-interpet is cuir venenum. Thanks a lot for the generous draw. I am in the US.

As someone mentioned above, Isparta is good for those looking for a perfume with rose. Isparta would also make a great choice for re-interpretation.

  • Im very curious to see the approach of this fragrance with the notes listed. As the reviewer thinks, I too have notes that I tend to shy away from, but Im interested to see how the peony and jasmine in this smell. I would also like to see Drama Nuui, Jardins de Kerylos and Yuzu Ab Irato although they all sound amazing:) Thanks for the opportunity as usual:) Im in the USA

  • Magnolia peony tolu and coffee…I think I would never want a perfume with these together. Yet Pam really convinced me to try Bouquet Masaii.
The art was extraordinary so unusual and for the descriptions
Bois Naufrage and Indochine are perfect but I would be open to interpretation by the great Pierre Guillaume.
    I live in Canada

  • Love the Massai inspiration, and the inclusion of more rarely named accords, like the karo karounde. Magnolia and coffee are two scents that I’d never think to pair with each other, but the overall effect described in this review is intriguing. And intrigue is one of the best characteristics of a good perfume. I’ve never had the opportunity to try a PG fragrance. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • What a draw! Pierre Guillaume is one of my all-time favorite noses, and while all of his scents don’t work for me, they are so INTERESTING and beautifully crafted. I would love to see what he could do with Cadjmere or Bois de Copaiba, two of my favorites. And of course I’d love to smell this intriguing twist on Aomassai! Thank you for the draw!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Sounds amazing and PG is a brand I love! I was particularly interested in the comment that it was uniquely appropriate for all genders in a manner that wasn’t “trite” or “safe.” Aomassi is one of my favorites….as is Bois Blonds and Iris Taizo. I’d love to see a riff on either of those as well! Speaking of “gender free” florals, I’d love to see PG play with a genderless Tuberose, as Tuberouse Couture is pretty blousy and feminine to my nose. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Bouquet Massai 10.1 sounds very different yet beautiful at the same time. Quite the unsual mix of notes, I would love to try it! Thank you for the chance. I live in the US.

  • Very inviting…Pierre G working coffee, cashmeran, sandalwood…..I would love to try this, these notes sound delightful and I’m familiar with the perfumer (although not familair with the house, so cannot say what I’d like him to revisit next). In NYC! Thanks!

  • I would love to win Bouquet Massai 10.1 because I am looking for a good coffee fragrance. the fragrance I would like the house to revisit would be Un Crime Exotique.
I am in America. thanks cafleurebon.com

  • Coffee and magnolia, sandalwood and peony, tolu balsam and karo karounde? What wonderful contrasts, and balance too, I expect! I would love to see how this turned out.

I have a few from Parfumerie Generale. Grande Siècle Intense was an excellent reimagining of its predecessor. Louange Profane is probably my favourite of the line, but I have been tempted by Coze and Cadjmere too – these two would be my choices for revisiting with a new twist.

I’d LOVE a version of Jardins De Kerylos that had a citrusy magnolia added to the mix (in case Pierre Guillaume is reading and feels like a little wish-granting ;).

Please enter me for the draw. Canada, please.

  • I loved so much Aomassi that its new rendering sounds irresistible to me.
I’d like Pierre revisit, for his next perfume rework, Harmatan Noir 11.
    I live in Italy
    Thanks!

  • Pierre Guillaume is one of my all time favorites! The combo of these notes sound amazing. Magnolia & Karo karoude must be intoxicating together! Can’t wait to sample this aphrodisiac elixir! I live in Lancaster MA. Thanks for the draw!

  • Parfummaniac says:

That’s what I love about Cafleurebon; the mix of art with perfumes! Great and inspiring written review, and again I started googling to read more and more. Pierre Guillaume: (happy belated Birthday) is a very interesting personality and he a great inspiration for many new perfumers without any doubt. And although I have only sampled some of his fragrances I would love to try more. I am from the Netherlands.

  • I feel the same way about floral notes, so of course I want to try this, Pam can sell me on anything (so can Pierre Guilluame, of course.) Love the description of notes on a parallel universe. I am terrible at the idea of tweaking already great perfumes so I have no suggestions…..thanks for the great review and opportunity, I’m in the US.

  • I would love to try this new release, I have yet to try any of Pierre Guillaume’s creations, believe it or not. I like the idea of playing with contrasts and the notes seem interesting.
    I live in the Netherlands.

  • I love the creative mind of Pierre Guillaume! Yes, I too am a fan of his and the directions he takes in perfumery. I would love to try this one just to experience the “accirds manifesting and then mingeling differently in a parrallel universe.” One of my favorites is L’Oiseau de Nuit, would love to see a revisit of Drama Nuui, another that I love. I am in the US.

  • I would like to try this, because Aube Pashmina is one of my favourite fragrances ever. I have tried Mangue Matisse, and Vohina, and i am fond of all of them, but AP is my favourite, and makes me want to learn more about fragrance.

  • I’m always intrigued by contrasts in perfumes so the description of this one as “sweetly bitter”, “yin and yang” really makes it sound like my thing! The karo karounde note also sounds very interesting, I love white florals with a twist! Aomassai is so far my favorite PG and I’m excited that it has been Reworked! I am also really fond of Felanilla and would love to see what a re-imagination of that one would bring!

  • Great set of notes in this one. From the florals, then the coffee, then the woods. Amazing sounding I know! I unfortunately have not tried anything from this house :(. Hopefully I will soon.

I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • If it smells like Coffee I would love to try it but this particular sentence really made me excited “There’s a yin and yang tension embedded in this scent that is delicious – your nose encounters the tannic bitterness”.

I am a reader from the EU.

Thank you very much! Wish you all the best!

  • The juxtaposition of coffee and peony intrigues me no end – I’m curious to see how it works on my skin, as they’re not necessarily notes you’d instinctively think would necessarily complement each other. I’m afraid I’ve not tried any other Parfumerie Generale scents, but I’ll definitely be finding out more now after reading about this one! Thanks for the draw, I’m in Australia.

  • Another great review! I loved the opening: “One thing that is always appreciated in any art form is authenticity. The feeling that you are experiencing a work that could only have come from one source, and created in a bold enough way that no one else could have produced it.” So true.

Such an interesting combination of notes in this fragrance – I enjoy them all separately but have a hard time imagining them together. It sounds like a scent one really needs to experience – and I’d love the chance. I haven’t tried any Parfumerie Genarale scents yet, but there are several I intend to try. I’m in the US and would love to start exploring the house here!

  • I love sandalwood, and sandalwood plus coffee (plus florals?) sounds like a very creative mix. I haven’t tried other Parfumerie Generale perfumes yet, and I am in the US. Thank you!

  • Aomassai with floral touches? Awesome I’m totally interested!! And according with the review it works as a unisex perfume. PG is a great perfumer and I’d love to try this one.
It would be interesting if he tweaks and do something different with L’Ombre Fauve. My favorite from his range as well.
I live in the US. Thanks.

  • Magnolia, сofee and sandalwood….Yes, please! I never sniffed anything from this line.
Thanks for another awesome giveaway! USA

  • Such a great review! ” this fragrance is based around a coffee/cashmeran accord, tolu balsam and sandalwood – plus a note of karo karounde (which is rather like an earthy, herbal jasmine.) The result is a sweetly bitter, perfectly rounded and exotically-tinged floral oriental scent that works fantastically on both sexes,” I’ m curious, intrigued because I always test each composition, that contains coffee note- it’s such a difficult note I hope I will find finally the perfect one.

I am a reader from the EU.

  • I love the juxtaposition of the bitter smoke with caramel and hazelnuts. This sounds like an amazing scent and I love that Pierre revists and reinvents his past works. I would love to see what he could do with my favorites from his lines, Felina and Poudre de Riz. Thanks for the draw! I live in the UAE (which really needs a distributor of his lines!).

  • Diana Devlin says:

What an interesting combination of notes! I love the scent of peonies but have never seen it mixed with coffee and balsam. I’d be so curious to test out this fragrance!
    I live in the U.S.

  • I would love to win Bouquet Massai 10.1. I’m very curious about this one and I love most fragrances of Parfumerie Générale. The mix of сoffee and sandalwood with floral and fruits sounds very different but beautiful at the same time.
    I live in the USA

  • Nice history very inspirational determination and perseverance along the way!
I am in the US, thank you!

  • I would love to try this new release because I have never tried any of any Pierre Guillaume fragrance. Sounds to be a very interesting scents.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love the notes in Bouquet Massai. I love peony, such a beautiful flower with a beautiful scent. I also love sandalwood, but don’t know how that mixes with coffee. Karo karounde, and tolu balsam are also notes I have never experienced, which is what makes Bouquet Massai very intriguing to me. I also love the packaging. The bottle is gorgeous.

I live in the USA, thank you!

  • What I find so intriguing in Bouquet Massai 10.1 is the notes combination peony and magnolia those two notes used to both sharpen the scent and also soften the bitter spiciness of coffee/cashmeran accord, tolu balsam, sandalwood and karo karounde
“The result is a sweetly bitter, perfectly rounded and exotically-tinged floral oriental scent that works fantastically on both sexes, in a way that is neither expected nor dull. The coffee/cashmeran accord pulses quite strongly and confidently in the heart of this scent, but it is only truly glimpsed through the prism of what surrounds it” this description from Pam’s review make this perfume too interesting to ignore.
Unfortunately I have not experienced any creation from Parfumerie Generale, hope to have the chance…
I am a registered reader living in EU, Greece.
Thank you Cafleurebon for the lovely review and generous draw!

  • I would absolutely love to try this fragrance. It sounds perfectly made for me. I love each note and I think they combine to create something truly special. I haven’t gotten to smell any fragrances from PG, but I surely will in the future!

    I’m a Canadian reader.

  • Hmm this one sound interesting if the peony is pulled off right. I enjoy the smell of fresh peonies but can’t say I’ve really smelled a dominate peony frgrance. Would love to try this especially with the coffee and sandalwood added.

    I’m in the US.

  • Intriguing! Love the artwork. I typically am not a floral gal, but lately have been fascinated by what coffee can do in a fragrance after experiencing Diptyque Florabollio. I am not familiar with this line, but would love to acquaint myself. Thanks. I’m in the U.S.
