New Perfume Review: Kyse Perfumes Terreno Dolce and Bois de Santal et Terre (Terri Bozzo) 2017+ All-Weather Gourmand Fragrance Draw

Terri Bozzo (the 120th American perfumer featured in CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery series) initially burst onto the indie perfume scene four years ago on Facebook with a fantastic gourmand called Sucre Et Fleurs and people took notice. Her small California home-based company, (then called Perfumes by Terri) became an instant hit with an almost cult-like status. After the debut and success of Sucre Et Fleurs in 2014, new scents with a gourmand flair followed and Terri rebranded her perfumes as Kyse Perfumes (Kyse, pronounced like “rice” is a combination of her two sons names, Kyle and Sean). Terri’s new Eau De Parfums for 2017 are definitely worth exploring. There are two scents in the line that I find particularly noteworthy and well-suited during the crazy weather that has half the country melting under a heatwave while the rest of us are still reaching for our sweaters are woody and fresh, with Terri’s signature gourmand vibe that will work well whatever the temperature may be.

Terreno Dolce (Sweet earth) is best described as a woody gourmand chypre. Terreno Dolce was the first Kyse Perfumes I tried, and has  olfactive picnic of the senses written all over it! Opening with a blast of fresh cedar overlaid by brown sugar, the scent brings to mind cedar planks used for grilling, the vetiver and moss notes keep it earthy and grounded while the brown sugar sweetens, enhances, and delights! This combination of fresh woody and earthy scents mixed with sweet might seem odd to you at first but it works exceedingly well. This is indeed a sweet earth scent, and one that you would reach for often. The perfect descriptor would be “addictive”. Notes: Vetiver, earthy notes, oakmoss, immortelle, woody notes and brown sugar

Bois de Santal et Terre (Sandalwood and Earth) is the most contemplative of the perfumes, the crystal clear bright day right after the storm. It is quiet and haunting, and allows you to slow down the endless machinations of a busy mind and be totally present. Yes it has its gourmand facets, but it is the sandalwood and wheat that bring shimmering beauty and grace to this scent. I wore it right before bedtime, and it seriously helped to put me in the zone, allowing for a deep and restful night’s sleep. The boletus (mushroom) and earthy notes keep it well-grounded with an extraordinary feeling of zen meditation. It is the sigh of relief and most inward-seeking of the two, more of a skin-scent, but one that you will be happy to keep to yourself and those who you want to be close to. Notes: Sandalwood, cedar, wheat, boletus edulis, cacao and earthy notes.

    I love how Kyse got it’s name! These two perfumes both sound so interesting, combining the sweet with earthy. Robert’s description of Terrano Dolce being “addictive” and Bois de Santal et Tera as “contemplative” make it hard to choose. I love perfumes that are both sweet and dark. I would choose Bois de Santal et Terra if I won this generous draw. I live in the USA.

    From both descriptions it is hard to choose. When Robert said regarding Terreno Dolce, “The perfect descriptor would be “addictive”, that’s the line that one me over. If I am chosen I’d like that one please. US

    Cool story, love the name Kyse. I would have to choose Bois de Santal et Tera. One of my favorites in my collection has a wheat note and I afore chocolate. It sounds divine. Thanks for introducing so many amazing people. I live in the US.

    Love gourmand fragrances, even more so when they have an unconventional twist. Bois de Santal et Terre’s mushroom and wheat notes sound peculiar, but knowing Terri’s style, she can absolutely pull it off. And Robert’s review confirms it! The idea of a haunting gourmand is very intriguing. In the US.

    I am not sure that I’ve ever experienced a “woody, gourmand chypre” but it sounds delicious! I would love to give it a try. I have the gourmand lavender from this line and it’s a favorite! Thanks for the draw. USA.

    These both sound amazing, though my somewhat noticeable obsession with the combination of vetiver + oakmoss make me mildly prefer Terrano Dolce in theory. It’s impossible to say because Robert did such a great succinct job of describing the mood-enhancing effects brought about by the notes in play (which is where a lot of the appeal of reading perfume blogs is for me!).

    I like the description of how she came onto the scene and reached a cult classic status with her fragrances. It speaks to a unique and talented style of crafting. Both of these sound like winners and are bringing out my indecisive nature.
    Since I have to chose only one, I would like to try Bois de Santal.

    I like gourmands but I am really curious to try these earthy type perfumes with the touch of sweetness. To me right now they look unique.

    I do like gourmands from time to time and it’s hard to find a good one, many of them have too much vanilla. The sandalwood, cacao and earthy notes in Bois de Santal et Terre sound like something I would pleasantly wear, so I would like to try this one. USA

    I like how Robert made Bois de Santal sound more zenlike and meditative and how he mentioned that the strangeness of an earthy gourmand becomes better even addictive in Terreno Dolce (and it’s true!)

    Terri is a delightful person (and perfumer) and sent me a complete sampler set when I contacted her with no expectation of anything…just so I could enjoy them, and enjoy I have been! It is difficult to choose between both of these earthy wonders; but, now that the two scent strips I sprayed hours ago have “dried down” it is definitely Terreno Dolce I would choose should I be fortunate enough to win.

    I never used to like gourmand notes all that much, but from my exposure to so many talented perfumers and wonderful Houses while I was here at Cafleurebon I have become rather fond of gourmand scents and Terri’s are some of the best and most interesting!

    Although the gourmand chypre sounds intriguing, I am drawn by the description of Bois de Santal et Terre; those notes put together is something that I would like to try. I do enjoy gourmand perfumes, and even though they aren’t my favorite genre, there a few very good gourmands out there. USA

    Thanks for the review! Both sounds lovely but I am inclined to Bois de Santal et Terre as this allowing for a deep and restful night’s sleep with an extraordinary feeling of zen meditation and giving a sigh of relief. My wife has migraine & she will enjoy wearing it.

    I like that Robert reviewed two fragrances I haven’t actually heard much about from her line. His descriptions are very in tune with nature, he makes me feel like wearing these perfumes while outside. I would choose Terreno Dolce. I LOVE perfumes with a gourmand vibe, I love it when I feel like eating my arm haha. I’m in the US!
