 THE LONGING

“A spiritual chant I hear echoing in the distance

a mystical rhythm that pulsates through

every fiber of my existence

a sensual dance of an erotic essence

Flowers of the divine soothe the darkest of souls

fruits picked from the fragile shrub

as pure sweetness unfolds

an everlasting beauty that longs to behold

A tussle of sweet honey slides down your wet lips

dewy skin is a temptation I cannot resist

a balmy musky climax of love

tenderness and butterfly kisses

A longing for your aroma and fragile touch

is a blessing of pure heavenly lust

a warm purple hue that blossoms through

in my vivid dreams of you” -Joseph Sagona, 2016

Fragrance Writer Joseph Sagona

Perfume inspirations can occur anywhere at any time…while waiting for a delivery of perfume from House Of Matriarch, Joseph Sagona mentioned to perfumer Christi Meshell that waiting for a perfume delivery (as we all know) can be fraught with hand-wringing anticipation, and wouldn’t it be interesting to create a perfume based on that feeling…

THE LONGING. One of my favorite words in the Portuguese language is “saudade” (sauw-DAHD-gee), a complex word that describes a feeling of love, longing, and desire (or loss) for a person, place, or thing that literally hurts your heart. The official meaning is “a deep emotional state of nostalgia or melancholy, a profound longing for an absent something, someone, or somewhere that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return….”

Robert Herrmann in Brazil 1980

Like the feeling of waiting for a perfume you simply must have so too, do many of my Brasilian friends who live away from Brasil, express this deep longing, or saudade for their country and family. The love runs very deep, and I know it well having worked in Brasil many years ago as a gemstone dealer and importer. Upon returning to the States, my desire for returning to Brasil was like a sucker-punch to the stomach, a need to be among familiar locations and surrounded by my South American Friends. Sometimes the need would be so great it would bring me to tears albeit joyful ones, for the love of Brasil and its inhabitants. Saudade. The Longing.

Christi Meshell House of Matriarch

The poem above based on that delicious feeling of anticipation was written by my friend, perfume reviewer, and co-moderator on Facebook Fragrance Friends Joseph Sagona. When I first read the poem, the words resonated deeply in my soul. When I discovered that the poem was actually a follow-up “brief” if you will, for a bespoke perfume being made for Joseph by the extraordinary Christi Meshell of House Of Matriarch, I could hardly sit still. I was literally vibrating with excitement. And longing. I have been following Christi’s professional trajectory from her first bottles of perfumes sold at Essenza in Seattle 5 years ago, to her perfumed presence In Nordstrom’s nationwide, the first all-natural perfumer to be given that honor. Her work is quite simply unforgettable, and I count Blackbird (now called Black No.1) and En Tendre (an enigmatic floral) among my favorites.

So what does The Longing smell like? To my nose it brings up a dark night in the small interior Brasilian town of Itambacurí. My friends and I had just attended a Candoblé service at the local Terreiro (Candoblé temple and yard), Candoblé is a polytheistic spiritual following brought to Brasil by African slaves in the 1500’s, as a way of preserving and passing on African ritual and religion in the new world. Candoblé (also Macumba and in the Americas, Santeria).

We had been instructed to venture forth in the dead of night to a nearby crossroads, to leave offerings for Êxu the God or Orixá of communications and travelers. We stood in the holy darkness, lighting candles and cigars, leaving glasses of Cacháca (rum) and Dendé (palm oil) as offerings. The smell of the dirt road and smokey candles mingled with the scent of the cigars, alcohol, and tropical plants and flowers on the roadside. The bitter scent of sweat on our bodies on that oppressively humid night, mixed with a slight whiff of fear and desire, as we unknowingly worked to scare ourselves silly. It was a moonlit evening filled with mystery, magic, and longing as we all prayed for our hearts desire.

  • it’s odd, but i like the smell of clean sweat in humidity – it brings back pleasant memories. A nice memory I have of a humid night is me and my friends all going to a garden in the middle of the night in the month of May, just dancing around and laughing in the sticky night air. I’m in the USA 🙂

  • What appeals to me about the Longing is it’s breathtaking note breakdown and the fact that I love Joseph’s reviews and taste in fragrances. I also love Christi’s compositions as well. Waiting for my first order of Sultan Pasha Attars and samples is a memory that relates to the theme of this fragrance. Coming from the UK to the US, the first time, to my address, it seemed like an eternity. My anticipation to experience his creations was intense. I’m in the US. Thank you for doing this amazing giveaway.

  • Oh wow. This review is so timely–can you have a saudade for a place you haven’t been yet?? I am traveling to Brazil in a couple months, and SO longing to experience it. The smell of dirt road…and smokey candles…and tropical plants and flowers along the way…heaven. I do have saudade for Oaxaca Mexico, a place I once lived. I currently live in the USA. I have not tried any House of Matriarch scents yet, but I certainly plan to. Thank you!

  • Longing…. I so would love to win this. All the reviews I’ve read are so marvelous. I think this won’t be a limited edition because it’s going to have so much success. I think Joseph and Christi never thought people would LOVE Longing so much. It’s a huge success and I really need it. Congrats on your big success.

  • Sorry I forgot to add to my comment that I’m Portuguese so Saudade is our word. The word that doesn’t have translation, the word sang by many, Longing can be Saudade.

  • My memories of longing are for the shores of Lake Superior. The smell of the water, pines, sun on sand, wild roses and moss. I love the word saudade and the beautiful art accompanying this piece. After this review, now, I have a longing for this perfume! I live in the USA.

  • I love House of Matriarch and Christi has always been so free and kind with her communications. And Ive followed Josephs reviews for a while. And read other poems of his that were equally great. He has brought so many relatively unknown fragrances into the forefront. The reviews are very informative while at the same time somewhat simplistic which I very much appreciate. Christi and Joseph working together to produce a fragrance was very exciting news to me.
Favorite HOM fragrance might be Coco Blanc or Kazimi. But who knows….maybe The Longing will become it. Im saudade to try it out. 🙂
    I live in the USA.

    Congrats Joseph and Christi

  • What a sensational story, review, poem, and I suspect, perfume — I absolutely LOVE the Brazilian connection! I’m still waiting for my sample to arrive, so this has aptly become my personal saudade. I always thought Coco Blanc would be my favourite HOM perfume, but it just might be The Longing; I can’t imagine this perfume being anything but drop-dead gorgeous! I’d love to be in the draw — I live in Canada

  • I appreciated Robert’s review for its strong evocation of the deep feelings of wanting and longing. Joseph’s poem is more of a sensual nature, and reminds of us the sweetness of love, as well as the sharp pain of its absence. I long for a long lost love, and what could have been. It is a pang that will live with me forever. I live in the US and haven’t yet sampled any fragrances from this house, but would love to!

  • Interesting fragrance! My favorite fragrance from this house is Albratros! It smells like wet cork! And odd love to try out this which sound weird but, very very interesting! New York City over here 🙂

  • Great review.

I don;t have a favourite fragrance from this house.

Thanks for the chance. I’m in Canada

  • I would love to try The Longing because of its connection to saudade. What a great word. I think it describes my feelings for those few that I have loved really deeply and who are gone forever.
I am very fond of Orca. I have not tried any other House Of Matriarch perfume. I live in the USA.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Saudade. “A feeling of love, longing, and desire (or loss) for a person, place, or thing that literally hurts your heart.” I know it well, though the word wasn’t in my vocabulary. Thank you.

What an amazing opportunity. My favorite from this house is Trillium, with Bohemian Black in second place. Both are amazing! I’m in the USA. Thank you for the review and this FABULOUS draw.

  • I’ve never smelled anything from House of Matriarch, but this review does peak my interest. I have an intense longing, sometimes, for a different time in my life than right now. Maybe not quite what you had in mind, but certainly a longing nevertheless. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • Beautiful poem for a sad name The longing, even in Portuguese, Saudade sounds sad to my ears…but then come the notes to warm our hearts.
The only perfume I have tried from this House is The Maj, absolutely lovely one!
I live in Europe, thanks for the draw.

  • I was aware of the story behind Longing before this. Even though it has been inspired by Joseph and the experience he underwent (this experience is familiar to all of us perfumistas) I could not help but notice how Longing reminds Robert of Brazilian culture. The perfumes really have this power that they remind different people of different things and experiences. Thanks a lot for the generous draw. I am in the US. My favorite HoM perfume is Orca.

  • Beautiful review and the poem is very nice. when I was a child we had visit the seaside for 10 days every year on summer. But after we did not go there for about till 8-9 years. And finally on one summer, we could go to the sea again. I was very glad and I longed very much to see again the beautiful seaside, and the mountains. To feel again the fresh, clean scent of the forests and the calming saltiness of the seawater. I would very like to win this wonderful perfume. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.
Oh, and my favorite House of Matriarch perfume is Coco Blanc. Actually I only tried that one from this brand, but I loved it very much.

  • I never had a bottle from this line and with such interesting breakdown notes why not; specially plum is one of my favorite notes. The story behind the name and 20% for the charity. well done! Lve in US.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the wonderful review. Heard about The Longing before among the fragrance community members at different places and Joseph himself reviewed earlier with detail story behind the Longing creation. Much appreciation from many people about this & it is like a hot cake, so would love to get hands on this. The poem itself speaks the story behind the perfume The Longing. My favorite from HoM is Black No 1. My memory of mine was Anais Anais gift to my 2nd divorced wife in 1999.
Thanks to Christi Meshell for the generosity & Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in NY, US.

  • I like the story behind it and the fact that is so rare; only 50 bottles made!! And how about that sexy poem 🙂
I haven’t tried anything from the House of Matriarch, sadly.
    I live in EU.

  • Lovely poem! Does indeed describe the anticipation of waiting for a perfume! And how do I know that longing. One of the downsides of living in Finland, which is to perfume as a desert is to water, is that whenever I buy a perfume there is always waiting involved, sometimes weeks and weeks. Well, he who waits for something good never waits for too long, says the Swedish proverb, and that is true at least in part. The anticipation builds so that the arrival is all the sweeter when it finally comes! So I don’t mind the longing really (except for those times when I start thinking that my package has been confiscated by customs or otherwise gotten lost somewhere in the underbelly of the postal system)… Anyway, The Longing sounds awesome and I wouldn’t mind longing for it if I were to win! So far I’ve only tried a couple HoM perfumes, and neither captured my heart, but I look forward to sampling more! Oh, and in case you missed it, I’m in Finland, EU.

  • I love the choice of art and the notes. Plum is one of my favorite fruit notes, I regret there are so few perfumes with the dominant plum note.
And what a great, meaningful name – The Longing…
I feel I would like this scent very much. Thank you for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • What a lovely poem, it moves something within me, although I feel my longing is usually much less exciting and more sad and difficult to bear. I guess I don’t like to long for anything, I am a very impatient person.

Leather, benzoin and sandalwood in this fragrance sound very nice and warm. Thank you for the draw, I live in EU and never tried anything from House of Matriarch before.

  • Oh, I am a fan of this house. I have tried Black No.1 and Coco Blanc from them and they are so good. It’s a niche house which cares about its patrons.

These scents are different than any I have smelled before. I would love to smell Longing. I believe the Plum note and the other darker aspects will make it delicious.

    In WA, USA.

  • What a beautiful review. Everything about this scent is calling my name. I have tried several of Christi’s scents and they are gorgeous!
I live in the U.S. Thanks much for the generous giveaway!

  • My partner is Brazilian so I spend a lot of time in Brazil. I know what saudade means when I leave Brazil. Daily life is hard in Brazil, but there is a sensuality in the air that I miss and long for when I am away.
I am very interested in House of Matriarch’s Black Number 1. I’ve heard a lot about it.
    I live in the USA.

  • I am from Romania, and we alo have a word of our own for that feeling, and the word is “dor”. This word, and the feeling is stands for, has been a major part of our folklore and literature, and the concept is studied even in our schools because of that.

I, myself, have had that feeling. It has a certain duality in the fact that it is the result of something beautiful you miss or long for, but that longing is excruciating at the same time.

I would really like to see this concept put into a fragrance bottle! 🙂 thanks for the giveaway.

I haven’t tried any HofM fragrances.

  • The notes sound comforting and warm, I think it is a perfume which soothes the longing. I’d love to try it.
I live in the EU, thank you for the draw.

  • cinnamon tree says:

I have many memories of longing, usually places I remember from my childhood, which have changed so much that they aren’t now what they used to be. I missed them so much, but I am kind of happy I at least still have my memories.

I love the poem, it pictures an entirely different side of longing – a hopeful expectation.

I live in Europe. Thank you for so beautiful review and the draw as well.

  • I loved this part of the poem that describes the fragrance “Flowers of the divine soothe the darkest of souls”. Any fragrance that can be described like this sounds amazing.

Thank you! Wish you all the best!

  • I have never smelled anything from this house, so I am very curious to try this interesting perfume, esiecially since I love the plum note. As for longings, I have too many of them to count. I would love a perfume which captures this feeling.
Thank you for the draw. I live in EU.

  • I have read some reviews of The Longing and seems that this is one of there rich, full fragrances I love so much. It sounds so lovely I can’t wait to try it. Thank you for the oportunity.

    (EU)

  • Great set of notes in this one! I also loved the poem as well. I haven’t tried a fragrance from this house but I’ve heard a lot about it. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • I’ve heard nothing but good things about the House of Matriarch, but didn’t try anything from them. Beautiful collaboration between Christi and Josephs and I’m sure something great must have come out of it. (EU)

  • Beautiful name and beautiful notes. Sounds like a fragrance worth trying, even more when it’s so limited edition. I would love to be the lucky winner. I live in Europe, thanks!

  • I am so much under impression of the poem, especially these lines:

-a mystical rhythm that pulsates through

    every fiber of my existence

a sensual dance of an erotic essence-

I would love someone to write such a poem for me, to be a person someone longs for so intensely. I believe the fragrance is as great.

I don’t have a favorite fragrance from House of Matriarch yet. Thank you for the draw. EU.

  • There is this book.. it was written by a famous( or for some infamous for some of his views) polish traveler, who travels mostly to Amazonia and one of his book about one of his voyages he had scented with – his perception- of smell of the Amazonian forest. I am more that heartbroken that this beautiful and breathtaking scent has vanished by niw( I have bought this book about 10 ago). If Longing smells anything like it… My God! I always enjoy a nice piece of poetry and this one is good!
Few years ago I went to Portugal and there I come to know this wonderful term of saudade. I really don’t know what is my own saudade..or maybe I just can’t share it with you yet… anyway sorry it’s the second option Lol
I adore Devotion and i live in Poland EU

  • This one has intrigued me since I first heard about it..LOve plum notes. I especially would like to be the lucky winner, now that I read it is sold out! Thanks for the great review and the draw. USA

  • Great choice of art, it reminds me of Salvador Dali. I like the poem, too. A fragrance which is all about anticipation must be interesting, especially with these notes – I love agarwood and leather combination. Thank you so much for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • Beautiful poem!! This fragrance must be amazing since it is sold out. Would love to try this. I am not familiar with this fragrance house. My favorite fragrances are those that remind me of a place I long for. Right now I am longing for Santa Fe or New Orleans, my next trip is to Arizona, so I will continue longing. Thanks for the draw. I live in the US.

  • Saudade… Perfume of the longing – what a great idea. I am so curious about how the feelong of longing was captured in this fragrance. The notes sound fantastic.
    I live in Europe. Thanks!

  • I love everything about this perfume, the notes, the name, the poem. I’d love to test it.
Thank you for the review and the draw – I live in the EU 🙂

  • Beautiful poem and an even more beautiful fragrance. I’ve heard great things about the house, haven’t tried any of their scents though.

I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw

  • Oh I am so glad I found this!!! I went to the website and it was sold out. I really admire Joseph and want to smell this. I have saudade for my son who actually lives in Brazil
