New Perfume Review: Hiram Green Voyage + Inside Octopussy’s Palace Draw

Hiram Green Voyage

Natural Perfumer Hiram Green and his new limited edition Voyage

Hiram Green,  ÇaFleureBon Best Natural Perfumer of 2014 (along with Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics) left London to start his own perfumery in the Netherlands,  and describes his new limited edition Voyage perfume as “An ode to the exotic mysteries of India, our new fragrance is as atmospheric and thrilling as a Mysore street market and as opulent as Octopussy's floating palace on Lake Pichola.’

Voyage is definitely atmospheric and about as opulent a fragrance I’ve encountered all year.  Which is quite a feat for two reasons:  one, it is an all-natural perfume with tremendous longevity, note presence and sillage, and two, because the fragrance proves that you can achieve an intricate, rich and plush perfume from just a few high quality ingredients.

The perfume opens with some light, powdery citrus notes that quickly rise up and give way to an absolutely decadent amber and suede heart.  The base of Voyage is a pure, deep, extracted vanilla that extends along the floor of this scent like the largest and thickest Oriental carpet.  But it’s really the suede note that elevates Voyage from the rank and file of  feminine vanilla and/or amber-based scents.  Think of an immaculately tailored but worn suede vest, deep brown or black that fits your frame like a second skin. That’s what the suede note in Voyage does for the amber and vanilla in this scent –  enveloping them perfectly with a creamy caress of mysore sandalwood that pops in and out like one of the gorgeous women in Octopussy's lair.

Amber and vanilla are sometimes overused and overdone in scent.  In Voyage, that gorgeous suede backdrop immediately introduce your senses to how rich, supple and deep the amber and vanilla can be; these are not flabby, synthetic, syrupy offerings.  The amber has just enough of a rough, smoky edge to allow it to be a shadowy counterpoint to the sweetness, and the madagascar vanilla punctuates and extends the base of this scent.  If you think you’ve run your course in gourmands or amber-based scents, Voyage will re-orient your senses to why you love these kind of fragrances in the first place. Again,  the power in this fragrance cannot be overstated, especially for a natural perfume.   On my skin it lasted for at least eight hours, with only a slight diminishing in the note strength and sillage at the very end.  It hummed and purred along wonderfully all throughout the day.  The warm, sensual vibe Voyage imparts has to be one of the best travelling companions I’ve had all year.

As in  the swoony over the top white floralcy of Moon Bloom and  the vintage chypre  vibe of  Shangri-La , Voyage shares Mr. Green’s signature elegant style; it’s a sophisticated, deep, and technically masterful work.  The nose is drawn not only to the decadent and sumptuousness of the ingredients themselves, but to how they are defined and harmonize with each other. In its reference to Octopussy’s amazing floating palace,  instead of announcing gaudy wealth and parading luxury at the expense of taste, Hiram Green's Voyage offers a rich, decadent and finely-appointed fragrance that  is a cut above the amber/vanilla fragrances that clutter the market.  I don’t know if my dream house would float on Lake Pichola, or if I am cut out to be a Bond Girl, but  if I ever had the chance, I would smell like Voyage.  You’re going to have to seize opportunity when it strikes – Voyage is a limited release of 250 bottles.  There is a pre-order special, so my advice is to invest early with your favorite scent realtor.

  • Did you say Bond 007 and Hiram Green’s new Voyage in one sentence, be still my heart. Well I have several Bond beauties that come to mind, Sophie Marceau from the 1999 the World is not enough with Pierce Brosnan. Also Eva Green from Casino Royale and Izabella Scorupco from Golden Eye, Olga Kurylenko from Quantum of Solace….yes Bond fan here and I love Moon Bloom by Hiram Green, I am looking forward to at least trying the new Voyage, it sounds lovely, plus you had me at Amber Suede Heart 🙂 I am in the US.

  • You had me interested with the description of decadent, sumptuous ingredients that are natural and also have longetivity. Sound like perfection!
Honor Blackman definitely is my favorite Bond girl.
I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I very like natural perfumes, and this one sounds so amazing, I would very like to win this perfume. My favorite Bond girl is Halle Berry. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I like that Pam isn’t sure she’s “cut out to be a Bond Girl.” The whole review made me realize that I love, love, love opulent perfumes which is funny since I’m otherwise totally casual. Not a Bond Girl, not by a mile. In the US. Am a registered reader. Haven’t tried any Hiram Greens (alas). Favorite Bond Girl? Pussy Galore, whose name I had to look up – Honor Blackman. Thanks for the draw!

What if My favorite Bond girl … erm, woman, is actually Judy Dench’s M? Anyway, Pam had me at “decadent” and “opulent!” I’m in USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Swoon-worthy, vanilla, and amber all in one place definitely caught my eye! That and the fact that this was touted as a long-lasting natural perfume. I love both Moon Bloom and Shangri-La, the former for being a rich tuberose that even a man could pull off and the later for it’s gorgeous old-school/new-school duality! I’m in the US (and not sure if I have a favorite Bond girl).

  • The mouth watering description of the vanilla in Voyage makes me want to roll around on that thick oriental carpet! As a lover of amber perfumes I’m intrigued by the statement that Voyage can re-orient why we love those fragrances to begin with. Any perfume called opulent will definitely catch my interest. My favorite Bond girl is Ursula Andress as Honey Rider for that iconic bikini shot. Thanks for the fabulous review and draw, I’m in the US.

this is intriguing review. A scent that starts out green but ventures into gourmand territory while also avoiding the mistake of too much amber or vanilla while craftfully using suede note. It is also great it has some elements of Shangri-la which i think is the most popular from the line. My favorite Bond girl is Eva Green. I am in the US

  • Elizabeth T says:

It must indeed be opulent, the year is almost over! I love sandalwood in perfume, and it sounds gorgeous mixed with suede. And I have heard amazing things about Hiram Green’s perfumes. USA. Thank you for the fun article and generous draw!

  • This sounds gorgeous, and thank you for mentioning the longevity. I just got a sample of Shangri-La, and am planning to try it tomorrow. I’m in the US, and agree with pursejunkie–always Grace Jones.

  • Loved the comparison with the Bond movie. Amber and vanilla is one of my favorite shaken-not-stirred mergers. Diana Rigg is my favorite Bond girl. I live in the U.S.

  • I’m very curious about this all natural perfume ‘… with tremendous longevity…’ and that is ‘…intricate, rich and plush…’ .
I’m from Italy and my favorite Bond Girl is Eva Green.

  • Pam’s description of Voyage is vivid enough that I can almost smell it. If this is amber and vanilla done right, I would love it. Hiram Green’s Moon Bloom is gorgeous and Shangri-la is lovely. I prefer perfumes that are more natural than synthetic. I have no favorite Bond girl. USA

  • It’s so exciting that there are these very technically strong natural perfumes out now, Complexity with few ingredients is wonderful. I live in Canada.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I have loved Hiram Green’s other two scents and this spiced Amber vanilla with a heart of leather sounds even more amazing! I would love to try this! I live in the UAE.

  • This is all-natural with vanilla note? Sounds ideal. Eight hours of longevity, perfect. For me, it will forever be Ursula Andress. U.S.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I Love the Image of vanilla as an oriental carpet. I, too, would like to smell of Voyage. I live in Europe.

  • I really loveMoon Bloom it is such a wonderful perfume. Although I don’t like many Amber/ Vanillas the Mysore and suede notes sound intriguing
Diana Rigg from Her Majesty’s Secret Service was the first Bond Girl I can remember
    I live in the US

  • I like the ‘warm, sensual vibe’ and the description of the suede notes. My favourie Bond girl is Barbara Bach and I live in South Africa.

  • Wow. Great review! My favorite part is this.
Think of an immaculately tailored but worn suede vest, deep brown or black that fits your frame like a second skin. • Pam put her finger on my reluctance to pursue amber and vanilla bases in fragrance — they’re everywhere, and yes, indeed, I will say it, they can be boring.

That’s why I am interested in Voyage. I would absolutely love to luxuriate in an amber/vanilla base enhanced with suede and sandalwood!

Another Grace Jones fan here — not so much a fan of Bond films, though.

    I am in the US.

  • I am a fan of all things amber and vanilla and also enjoyed Hiram Green’s other fragrances very much. I liked Pam’s review because she always finds a great cultural or historical reference to evoke a perfume’s notes and character. I am in the U.S.

  • I like how Pam describes the suede leather accord. The fragrance itself sounds so great. I hate when vanilla is over the top. This sounds just right. I have never tried a Hiram Green fragrance but this would be a perfect start for me. Solange Dimitrios was the modern day Bond girl. In the USA. Thanks for a chance to try this fragrance.

  • Decadent orientals are my absolute favorite genre of fragrance, and it’s hard to imagine an all-natural perfume being able to achieve that, so I’d like to try it. I’m in the US and my favorite Bond girl is Eva Green. Thanks for the drawing.

  • Haley Berry is my favorite Bond girl by far. I did enjoy this descriptive journey and it sounds so luxurious and very sensual. I do like Amber. Very Bond girl . There is a playfullness as well. I am a registered US reader.Thank you for the review Pam.

  • Loved this review, does a wonderful job of describing the notes. Makes you want to put on a soft, suede coat and take a walk outside in this lovely weather. Amber and vanilla are nice going into these cooler months. Natural just makes it all the more appealing. Great things are happening with natural now. Haley Berry is my favorite bond girl (if I have to pick a fav). Bond movies are lots of fun and filled with excitement. Enchanting! I’m in the US and registered.

  • I enjoyed Pam’s detailed descriptions in this review and I think that this smell must be a real joy to the senses vanilla, leather suede, amber what a mix this must be.
My favorite Bond girl Eva Green.
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank you for this lovely review and draw.

  • I enjoy Pam’s reviews, specifically how her words evoke the opulence of this scent. Rich, supple, and deep amber and vanilla… sounds like love to me! I am in the US. Thanks for the draw! I don’t know much about Bond girls, but I guess my favorite would have to be Ursula Andress, because she stands out in my mind as being so sexy in this role.

  • My eyebrows of interest are raised because of this review – Thank you, Pam!
I badly want to try this perfume! It seems that it’s a non-natural-smelling natural perfume with a long-lasting power. Moreover, I have never detected a suede note in natural perfumes, nor I have sampled any of Hiram Green’s creations.
My favorite Bond girl is Melina Havelock played by Carole Bouquet.
    I live in Bulgaria (EU).
    Thank you for the chance!

  • Great review Pam! I really like the history and meaning of this fragrance. It sounds very unique and very well made. I am in Canada and thank you so much for the draw!

  • Nice review! I thoroughly enjoyed it. This fragrance sounds great. I love vanilla type scents so this is definitely my style. I can honestly say that I’ve never watched a Bond movie! I know I’m weird haha.

I’m a Canadian reader and thank you for the draw!
