New Perfume Review: Hiram Green Dilletante + The Giving Tree Draw

Orange Tree Branches. 1889. Berthe Morisot

Orange Tree Branches. 1889. Berthe Morisot

Netherlands’ Natural Perfumer  Hiram Green has released his fourth perfume Dilletante to much anticpation. Wikipedia defines a ‘dilettante’ as: “a person who enjoys the arts or someone who engages in a field without investing the usually required effort.” and Dictionary.com, “a person who takes up an art, activity, or subject merely for amusement, especially in a desultory or superficial way; dabbler.” This caused me much confusion at first, as Mr. Green is far from a dabbler, having constructed natural perfumes which propel and evolve the standard for the genre and has paid his dues in both the business and creative ends of the perfuming spectrum. So what is it he is trying to say with this odd name? I have to imagine it is the deceptive simplicity found in the homage to the orange tree and its three main aromatic offerings: petitgrain, orange blossom/neroli and orange oils.

Far from a soliflore, this triptych of oils gives a complete olfactory vision of the ‘giving-tree’, wherein one can observe three seasons in one spray. Dilettante opens with indolic sweetness of blossom, boosted by orange and given structure by petitgrain. There is the hallmark of a natural perfume in the way they tend to go through phases of wear, although Hiram has extended this interplay from a couple hours into a range of 5 to 8 hours (this is but one reason Hiram Green is upping natural perfume standards.)

Hiram described Dilettante as an enchanted and light-hearted celebration of summer. Enchanted yes, but this is no summer fling.  There is much to be discovered in the accessory notes which are present but hard to put a finger on.

Dilettante could easily translate into any season, provided one is fond of the orange tree in general. There is a resinous smoke in the dry down which is sublime in its reservation and refusal to take over any stage of Dilettante, as well as hints of spice and an effervescence similar to, but more subdued than 2015’s Shangri-La.

it gives me great pleasure cecil beaton2

In short, this is a perfume of joy

Notes: Petitgrain, neroli, orange

*disclosure: my sample was provided by the kind folk at Twisted Lily for review.

Editors’s Note: I have a sample of Dilettante and  for me it brought to mind the late 19th century art of French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. Deceptively simple, but masterly. Hiram Green received A CaFleureBon  Best of Scent for Best Natural Perfumer of 2014  and last year the limited edition Voyage debuted…an ode to Lake Pichola and Octopussy’s floating palace, which is still available at Indigo Perfumery .

  • His fragrances have been getting raves, so I’d love to try Dilettanle. I do have my warm/cold weather favorites, but the lines often cross depending on my mood and the occasion. I am in the US.

  • fazalcheema says:

this seems the first Hiram Green creation for summer and it has orange flower which i enjoy. I have voyage from the brand and it is also my favorite from Hiram Green. I wear both summer and winter perfumes all year around. I am in the US

  • Lellabelle says:

Hiram Green is probably my favourite perfumer working today. The fact he accomplishes what he does with naturals is truly remarkable. He’s a genuine inspiration, and his perfumes are a delight. Dilettante sounds radiant. I would love, love, LOVE to win this!!!
Please enter me for the draw! And if Mr Green is reading this: I think you’re a marvel. Thank you :))

  • BostonScentGuy says:

The idea of pure “joy” as a scent is wonderful! I love citrus scents that capture multiple facets of the tree all in one place! I also love the idea that there is a reserved resinous smoke in the dry down. Lastly, Hiram Green is probably one of my favorite naturals (and just general perfumers) of late! The lovely modern chypre-nature of Shangri-La is fantastic. I’d be so excited to try this!

I do wear like wearing some summer fragrances year-round (Mugler Cologne, Cologne Indelible, Le Labo’s Tubereuse), though I relish finding the “right” way to wear any fragrance in any weather, so I’d definitely consider some winter heavy hitters summer appropriate at times!

Please enter me in the draw–thanks so much! I’m in the US.

  • Iphigenia says:

I have this tendency of mine to wear all year round summer perfumes and winter perfumes depending on the mood and on the weather for example on summer breezy nights I prefer sensual winter perfumes and on warm winter days summer perfumes.
The reason I want to try this perfume is best written on this paragraph of Einsof’s review:
“Dilettante could easily translate into any season, provided one is fond of the orange tree in general. There is a resinous smoke in the dry down which is sublime in its reservation and refusal to take over any stage of Dilettante, as well as hints of spice and an effervescence…..”
I love citrus smell especially orange!
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank you for the lovely review and draw.

  • Dilettante sounds beautiful. I have been a bit orange obsessed the past year. I’ve been looking for an orange scent that was not a cologne which would work well in the summer. From Einsof’s account, Dilettante soudns perfect. Thank you and Hiram Green for providing this opportunity.

  • I hear really great things about Hiram, but have not sniffed any of his creations personally. Straight up citrus doesn’t seem to like me, though I love neroli, and orange blossom – this particular frag sounds interesting because of its smoky spice. The pettigrain is intriguing. I live in Canada, where the temperatures vary widely, so I do have seasonal fragrances in my collection. This summer I’ve been waring some SSS frags (she’s Californian lol) and light things like Prada Iris and Bulgari Crystalline. I do wear no 5 all year, though, and certain musks from Ava Luxe. Thanks for the draw, I’m in Canada. 🙂

  • I love orange blossoms. They really epitomize summer for me. I have heard so many good things about this perfume. I can\t wait to try it.
I wear Carnal Flower all year round, even though I consider it a “summer” fragrance. The tuberose seems to bloom beautifully in the heat. But winter brings out its green coolness. It’s just perfect for all seasons.

I have not tried any perfume by Hiram Green although Moon Bloom is really calling my name. I have to sample that one soon.

Thanks for the draw. I live in Canada.

  • ” Enchanted…….but this is no summer fling.” How could anyone not want to try an “enchanted” perfume? And since Hiram Green created it, I wouldn’t mind if it were a “summer fling”. That can be a lot of fun too. I know Dilettante has to be wonderful. I adore Hiram Green’s perfumes and I finally have my treasured bottle of Voyage! I wear the fragrances I love year-round. USA.

  • In the past, the word dilettante was not the insult it is now, i wonder if Mr. Green knows that, suspect he does, as his fragrances all had a nod to the past. I have never tried one of his fragrances even though I haven’t heard or read anything but raves about them. This one does sound SO summery. I wouldn’t mind having that “summer fling” with it! I don’t wear “summer fragrances” off season as I really like my scents dark and heavy unless it’s quite warm out. In the US. Thanks for the draw and the lovely impressionisy art

  • Neroli and petitgrain are my favorite citrus/citrus-related scents. I wear what I like, regardless of season. I’ll wear bright “summer” scents in winter for a lift and incense scents in summer. I have Il Profumo Mandarine which smells just like a fresh-picked tangerine, one of my favorite energizers regardless of season. Dilettante sounds slightly more sophisticated with what Einsof calls “a resinous smoke in the drydown”. I’m intrigued! I haven’t tried any of Hiram Green’s scents before, but it would be a tossup between Dilettante and Moon Bloom. I live in the USA.

  • Hiram Green is one amazing perfumer- his work for Scent Systems is to be sought out especially ´Carnation’! If ´Moon Bloon’ us a gorgeous swansong to Tuberose I betFilettante is going to be a masterpiece… I like the idea of a giving tree- encapsulates beautifulky the orange tree where perfume abounds… I would love to try this celebration of summer! Wearing summer scents all year round is something I do because I do want to be reminded of summer joy when the Parisian sky turns grey and cold. Thank you for this draw- I live in France.

  • This fragrance sounds fabulous, especially as citrusy fragrances are becoming more appetizing to me. I tend to wear fragrances according to my mood and not by season, so I can see me wearing Dilettante year round. I love that it has what Einsof calls a “resinous smoke in the drydown.” I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • Hiram Green is such a master of his work. The simple note list is more than the sum of its parts, as beautifully described by the reviewer, with a gorgeous orange blossom opening. My favorite Hiram Green fragrance is Shangri-La.

I am in the U.S. Thank you for the generous draw!

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I love the work of Hirma Green! Every scent is a masterpiece. I would like to smell Dilletante because I love Nice, the Cote d’Azur, Grasse and the scents of the summer there.

I live in the EU, thanks for the draw!

  • For quite some time now i’m searching for a real Orange perfume that also won’t be saying ‘bye bye’ in 1 or 2 hours. Dilletante sounds like the perfect Orange in which i would happily bath myself and be ‘sunny’ the whole year round.
I didn’t even know Hiram Green is from the Netherlands, as am i 🙂

  • your choice of paintings used to illustrate the perfume make me want to try it….gorgeous! I like orange and I love wearing lighter cheerier perfumes in summer. I wear them year round, by virtue of the fact that part of my year is spent in Singpaore, where lighter perfumes are a must. But when I’m in US with colder weather, I take advantage to wear my heavier perfumes. I have been meaning to try Mr. Green’s work for some time. I will have to correct that omission soon! USA

  • What a lovely review and it is amazing that three ingredients can have such richness with a resinous smoky drydown. I read The giving tree to my three children and it’s such a beautiful book so to find it used as a reference is delightful
I do tend to wear fragrances by season as light colognes don’t seem right in the cold
That artwork is simply gorgeous btw
My favorite Hiram Green is Voyage and Shangri la
    USA resident

  • This line got to me, “There is a resinous smoke in the dry down which is sublime in its reservation and refusal to take over any stage of Dilettante…”. Also I like wearing orange in warm/hot weather. I haven’t smelled anything from the HG house. USA

  • Scensodine says:

I’m a big fan of Hiram Green’s Moon Bloom which is beyond AWESOME!!! I love neroli and oranges and sunny weather. I wear both winter fragrances in summer and summer fragrances in winter. Especially summer fragrances in winter can lift me up when i feel a little bit down and also bring my environment in a sunny mood. I love wearing and enjoying fragrances but i love it even more when my surroundings enjoy it too 🙂
On top of all this i have a great amount of respect for perfumers that use natural ingredients as much as they can so thumbs up for Mr. Green!

I, obviously am Dutch and live in the Netherlands, LOL and would love to get my hands on this bottle!

    Good smelling regards 😉

  • This statement caught my eye.

In short, this is a perfume of joy
It just sounds so simple, I like the short list of notes. I have tried all of Hiram Green’s scents and they are divine. If I had to choose one, it would be Moon Bloom. I pretty much wear what I want when I want, I don’t pull out scents by the season.
Thank you for the giveaway, I live in the U.S.

  • rodelinda says:

Orange and orange blossom are my happy summer notes, so I would love to try this. I haven’t yet had the pleasure of sampling any Hiram Green fragrances. There are only a few heavy hitters that I save for cool weather — everything else gets worn year-round, including my summer fragrances. Thanks! I’m in the US.

  • Resinous smoke sounds very nice to me. I love orange blossom/ neroli and a natural perfume that combines these ingredients with resinous smoke is right up my alley. I wear perfume whenever I feel like wearing it, I don’t care forsummer or winter labels. If it feels right, it is right. I only tested (had a decant) of Moon Bloom, haven’t tried anything else (yet) and it’s very lovely. Love the new minimalistic bottles by the way. I live in EU. Thanks Hiram and Cafleurebon for this awesome draw!

  • I do not wear perfume seasonally, although sometimes the season inspires my choice of a perfume. I have been trying all of the Hiram Green perfumes and I am in love with all of them. My favorite by a hair is Shangri La; I love chypres and this one is gorgeous. I would love to have a bottle of Dilettante to add to the collection! Thank you for the draw, and thank you to Mr. Green for his wonderful creations that bring so much happiness.

  • I’ve love to win Dilettante based on “there’s a resinous smoke in the dry down” alone! I don’t wear summer fragrances year round because I base my choices off of moods rather than seasons. My favourite Hiram Green is Shangri La.

    I’m in Canada. Thanks!

  • A perfume of joy!! I really look forward to trying this, his previous perfumes and especially moon bloom were excellent! I wear all my perfumes all year round and orange /petigrain/neroli combination is beautiful!
Thank you for the draw, I amin the UK

  • I have heard many times of Hiram perfumes and this is another one that I’d love to try because the notes are from my favorite ones as I love citrus perfumes and wear them all year round. I haven’t tried yet any of Hiram’s perfumes although I read about them all the time. I’m in Europe.

  • I wear whatever scents suit me that day so I will wear summer type fragrances on cold days where I want a pick me up. And sometimes, on summer evenings, I crave wearing something spicy and richer. So it really all depends on my mood; not the seasons.

I love this has neroli in it. It’s a note that I love all year round.

    I live in the U.S.

  • I often tend to go against the grain and use summer fragrances in winter and vice versa. I also adore neroli, Bottega’s Knot, Annick Goutal’s Néroli and Lutens’ “Fleur d’ oranger” being my three go-to at the moment.
I haven’t tried any of Hiram perfumes yet, only read glowing reviews and am really curious about this one.I am in Europe.

  • I love oranges and orange blossom scents, and this one seems to be very close to what could be my perfect summer scent. I wear fruity perfumes mostly in spring and summer, but sometimes they are nice to wear when it’s freezing, they remind me that spring is closer than I think 🙂
I love Shangri-La and I regret I don’t know other scents by Mr. Green. Would like to win this one. I am in the EU and thanks for the draw.

  • Wonderful review. I really enjoyed to read it. I have never tried any of Hiram Green perfume, unfortunately. I would very love to win Dilettante, because from the review, it sounds fabulous. I would really enjoy it, I suppose. I not really selected perfumes for season. I like to wearing perfumes I like all year around.
I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.

  • I love the art illustrating the review. I am sometimes really tired of living in a big city and I believe that some time in an orange garden would calm my nerves. I also believe Dilletante could do so, being so simple, radiant and natural. I love Shangri – La and have really big expectations of Dilletante.

If I like a fragrance, I can wear it all year round.

Thank you for the review and the draw. I am in the EU.

  • Elaine Richard says:

I do love the florals and especially with citrus topnotes. I would love to receive the new Dilletante, but I would probably wear it year round. So far I have tried Moon Bloom and it’s gorgeous; would love to try all Hiram’s scents.
    I live in California, USA.

  • cinnamon tree says:

I desperately need an uplifting, fresh and radiant summer scent, because
this summer doesn’t give me much free time or good weather to enjoy it.
Love the words about “a perfume of joy” (“Joy” by Jean Patou completely
disappointed me in this matter). I like to wear joyful “summer” scents all
year round. Thank you for the draw. I am in the EU.

  • Toblerone says:

I am most interested in the resinous smoke in the drydown, this plus the juicy orange would surely make a great fragrance. I know only Voyage from Hiram Green and I really like it, even if I usually prefer different types of scents. I am a registered reader and I live in Europe.

  • teresa310 says:

I am a fan of Hiram Green’s creations since I tried Shangri-La. It is
a masterpiece and if Dilletante is even half as unique, I won’t be afraid
to say that Hiram Green is a genius. I wear different scents regardless of
the season, trusting only my own moods. “Enchanted and light-hearted
celebration of summer” is something I would love to wear in the winter 😉

    (EU)

  • I am more into heavier and darker scents, even during summer, but this one would surely make a nice change in my perfume habits. One can never get too many sources of joy and perfumes make an excellent one. My best regards and congratulations to Hiram Green for Voyage which I love. I am in the EU.

  • Miss Almond says:

Neroli can be difficult for me to wear but I am not giving up and still
looking for a perfect neroli scent. I think orange oils make this fragrance
more fruity than flowery, which I think is better. On colder days I prefer
to wear smoky vanilla, tobacco or oriental scents, but now it’s summer time, so let’s go orange! I love the review. Thank you for the draw! I live in
    the EU.

  • Im going to use that term Dilletante more in my everyday life and consider myself one:) I have been intrigued by Hiram Greens creations but have yet to try one. Would love to win this very much:) I do wear summer fragrances year round especially in the day. Why not? it helps to escape to warmer climates or evokes memories of vacations:) I live in the USA

  • Spice and effervescence! Count me in! Although I tend to lighten up on the fragrances I use in the summer, I spritz anything, anytime, to match my mood. I don’t feel bound by the seasons, but rather feel completely free to embrace any scent that moves me. I am a huge fan of Hiram Green, and own and adore both Moon Bloom and Voyage. I would be thrilled to experience Dilletante, too. Thanks for the fabulous draw! I live in the US.

  • Neroli is one of my go-to scents, particularly during the oppressive heat we have where I live in TX (it somehow stays sweet but not cloying)! I do tend to switch up my scents in the summer, although all my favorites include floral notes. I LOVE HG Voyage – Dilletante sounds wonderful as well. Thank you for the generous draw!

  • Thank you to Einsof for this review. I am intrigued by Delettante’s description as a light-hearted and enchanted celebration of summer that could be worn year round. I love citrus and summery fragrances and wear them throughout the year. I am in the US. I have enjoyed wearing Voyage from Hiram Green.

  • I think that it is a ”delight” fragrance.I really love citrus-fresh fragrances.I want to have this in my collection.Usually i wear summer fragrances all year round because in my country has warm climate. I havent the opportunity to try any fragrances of this house.I hope to be the first time.I live in Greece.Ty for the draw!!!

  • The hint of smoke sounds intriguing! I do tend to switch to more stronger and sweeter scents in the colder months, but I never say never to wearing a fragrance in the winter just because it is summery. I am in the US. I have not had the pleasure of sampling any of Hiram Greens’s fragrances yet!

  • This is so right. Happiness in a bottle, both in its brightness and its sultry edges. Wonderful review and I would love to own a bottle to go with my Shangra-la and Voyage. I am in the U.S.

  • I love fresh citrus perfumes with a bit of sweetness, but first of all I love oranges! My No1 now is Lanvin Les Notes Orange Ambre and I wear it year round. Dilettante sounds great and I would like to try it. I love Shangri-La. Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • I love summer fragrances so I wear them all year round! I don’t feel scents should be worn only during a specific season or occasion. I haven’t tried anything from this house but Dilettante sounds great! I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • Great orange fragrance. I usually wear my summer scents in the summertime haha. Light citrus fragrances don’t seem to last on me in the colder months.

I have heard a lot about this house but haven’t had the chance to try any of them yet.

I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw

  • This sounds lovely. I have more orange scents than any other type, I think. They are just so versatile! The smoke and spice in Dilettante really draw me in, though. I have never tried any Hiram Green perfumes, but would love to. I live in Canada, thank you.
