Perfumes fronted by a famous celebrity  (a.k.a Celebuscents) often get a bad rap or are ignored completely, many times with good reason. So what happens when a celebrity who is passionate about fragrance works with world-class perfumers, using only top notch ingredients? Small stunning miracles, as attested to by award winning Brazilian actress and producer Giovanna Antonelli. You may not have heard of her,  here in the States, but in Brazil (a country roughly the size of the USA’s lower 48) she is theatrical royalty (her instagram page @gioanto has 5.7 million followers). After a chance meeting with the actress, and having fallen in love with her indomitable spirit,

Brazilian designer Edson Fernandes along with his business and life-partner Lionel Guignard took a chance, and promising to create world class niche perfumes pitched the idea of a fragrance line to Senhora Antonelli. Despite having turned down numerous fragrance and beauty endorsement possibilities in the past, as a perfumista, she was  excited about direct engagement in the project.

Thus was born a new Parisian fragrance companycalled COURTOIS/mourot and its first namesake fragrance range, inspired by Giovanna Antonelli is haute parfum all the way. All three of the perfumes in the  new Giovanna Antonelli range are inspired by Giovanna herself who was hands on in every aspect of the perfumes and each scent contains the number “11” in its name, a reoccurring number in her life that has come to represent “amor, alegria, abundância, felicidade, é boa sorte” (love, joy abundance, happiness, and good luck.

411 Intenso was inspired by the Palais-Royal, a landmark of Parisian life, which although a bit antiquated still feels like a profoundly contemporary setting imbued with the spirits of Molière, Colette, and Cocteau. Home to La Comédie Française, romantic gardens and shops both old and new sheltered under arcades, it remains one of the most charming corners in the city of light, naturally chic, without ostentation. Composed by Julie Massé, perfumer at Mane, who is no stranger to fine perfume having created Prive Armani’s Pivoine Sozhou (with Cecile Matton), Si Le Parfum, and Si Rose, Fleur Universelle and Terres Aromatiques for Lalique, and notably for Shay & Blue London fragrances. Her thoughts,“Giovanna reminded me of the Palais-Royal; a woman in love with beauty, feminine, a little theatrical, who appreciates beautiful classical things and appropriates them by modernizing them.”

Giovanna Antonelli and 411 Intenso apped MC

411 Intenso opens with a sharp rose and fresh bergamot, nose-tickling pepper, spicy and sweet but quickly turning dry, slightly dusty and summery yellow as the chamomile creeps in giving it a hint of the classic and old-fashioned perfumes of bygone eras. For awhile it borders on the comforting green and herbal astringent aroma of an ice cold glass of tisáne, condensation droplets running down the sides, served by your favorite “black-sheep-of-the-family Aunt in a sun-warmed afternoon kitchen. The scent of the highly polished wooden table, centered by a vase of wild grasses and flowers, woody and arboreal, dust motes dancing on the shafts of golden light streaming through the open windows, a waft of your Auntie’s sweat covered over by her heady peony and floral-scented splash cologne, and filtered through her vintage yet SO au courant Hermes scarf. Haunting, wistful, and beautiful as a daguerreotype seen through the sheerest bridal veil lens. Notes: Rose de Bulgarie, Bergamot, Pepper, Chamomile flower, Jasmine sambac, Ylang ylang, Peony,  Patchouli, Amber, Vetiver, Sandalwood.

Giovanna Antonelli and  611 Extremo apped MC

611 Extremo, (composed by Cecile Matton who created Josephine Baker for EldO, Baby Doll for YSL, Valentino Gold, and Elegance Animale for Lalique among others) is inspired by the Rio Botanical Garden blossoms at the foot of the Corcovado peak in the very heart of Rio De Janeiro, the Carioca city. Mme. Matton says, “As a true nature lover, Giovanna wished to dedicate a perfume to this extraordinary green space where she loves to walk with her children. The heart of Giovanna is pure Carioca, joyful, generous, and radiant. She inspired me to create a fragrance dominated by a vibrant urban tuberose, a fragrance with sensual and spicy notes that leave an unforgettable trail.” With 611 Intenso Ms. Matton has created a perfume as lush, tropical, humid and heady as Rio itself. Having spent a fair amount of time in the Rio Botanical Gardens, I can speak to its green, shady, and wooded beauty, meandering paths, lakes, footbridges, Japanese garden, and multitude of stunning tropical birds.

Tuberouse collage MC

Of the 345 park acres, only forty percent is “park-developed” the rest kept in wild forest creating one of the critical green lungs of the city. This perfume is all about the tuberose, from start to finish the tuberose note is present and persistent, while the other notes lap at its edges, helping to create a context for the buttery and almost candied aspects aspects of the moist and dripping tropical bloom. If you love Tuberose as I do, this glorious almost-gourmand celebration of tropical Brazil will definitely want to be in your collection. Notes: Rhubarb, Pear, Bergamot, Tuberose, Egyptian Jasmine, Hawthorn, Licorice, Iris, Benzoin, Vanilla.

Mathilde Bijaoui and Giovanna Antonelli via Instagram

According to Mathilde Bijaoui, who has given us unforgettable scents like EldO’s Tilda Swinton Like This and Bijou Romantique, Penhaligons’ Lily & Spice, Jacomo For Men, and Jo Malones’ recent Myrrh & Tonka,  811 Absoluto took its inspiration from Sao Paulo. “It is a very creative and cosmopolitan city open to the world: a tropical New York. “Sampa” (as its inhabitants lovingly call her), exudes a formidable vitality mixed with “la dolce vita”. Giovanna wished to salute the part of her that goes by “Gio”, the ideal of a “Paulista” epicurean hedonist who reinvents herself constantly and relentlessly. To that end I created a powerful perfume because it is here that the heart of Brazil beats the strongest! I wanted a voluptuous, intoxicating, and full-bodied signature that reflects the temperament of fire, both magnetic and sensual, and whose silky floral heart is gradually unveiled”.

Giovanna Antonelli as Jade in the Brazilian Telanovela El Clon apped by MC

Like SamPa herself, 811 Absoluto is big, brassy and blowsy, a take-no-prisoners green and slightly epicurean floral that carries its own jet stream wherever it goes. A study in contrasts, this is an edp on steroids, at once flighty and girly, but also gritty and street smart as a proud Paulista who is as comfortable in a “fio dental” monokini on the beach, or a severe suit in her CEO office, calling for a small coffee or cafezinho, for her clients. The jasmine and honey provide a deep slightly indolic sweetness, while the balsamic notes, patchouli and amber keep it grounded, sexy, and altogether help to provide the “in-control realness” of a “Brasileira Capaz!” To which I say “Tudo Legal!” Top: Bergamot, Pepper, Clove, Lavender, Green notes, Jasmine, Honey, Balsamic notes, Patchouli, Amber, Musk, Vanilla

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to COURTOIS/mourot for supplying the perfumes. The opinions are my own.

  • My mother’s favorite telanovela is El Clon. And she always said, that Jade how beautiful is. Sometimes I watched it with her, and I saw that Giovanna Antonelli danced so wonderfully, and that is one of the reason, that I learned belly dance. All of these 3 perfumes are sounds absolutely beautiful, but 611 Extremo sounds so fabulous from the review and from the notes. So If I would be as much lucky to win. My choice is 611 Extremo. I would be so glad if I would win. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Wow, this is great. Normally I would be drawn to one fragrance. I have to say I tend to go safely and stick with one olfactory family because I know I love it. But I like how Robert has showcased each fragrance just like the opening acts of totally different plays(or maybe they are the same production?! 😮 ). How fun! I can’t possibly choose and want to smell them all. So, in this case, I think I would choose the Discovery Set. A lovely way to sample at least one fragrance family you are used to, but can dip your toe in the water with the others! I live in the USA. I hope I win… Lol. like really.

  • Richard Potter says:

I love all of the descriptions, especially the on for 411 Intensi. So evocative. That is the one I most wish to win.

  • Lillyhollowayblog says:

Robert paints such lush and lively picture of each scent. It’s amazing at how faceted peoples lives are to draw inspiration from.
It’s almost impossible to choose between the three. I’d have to go with the discovery set. I live in the USA.

  • I’m all in on the 811 Absoluto (it’s the one I choose for the draw). It’s “big, brassy and blowsy” how can you go wrong? Also clove is a favorite note of mine and it’s in there. 🙂 US

  • These sound wonderful! I love Robert’s description of that sunny kitchen for 411 Intenso, but I am a tuberose lover so i would pick the 611 Extremo if I won Normally I go for the sample set but Robert has described this one so beautifully, I know I would love it. USA Thanks for the review and the draw.

  • fazalcheema says:

I think it is great that Giovanna Antonelli was deeply involved in the creative process and three different perfumers have created these 3 perfumes. 811 Abolsuto’s story is more interesting as it was inspired by Sao Paulo but my choice for this draw is 411 Intenso because its notes list seem most appealing to me. thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

  • ntabassum92 says:

Lovely reviews. I like how I can immediately go to the place Robert describes. I was especially taken in by the description of the Aunt in the review of 411. I can so imagine her, she sounds like many of my dear mother’s friends, and even my mother herself. I would like to win 411 Intenso, because I feel such a strong connection to the floral homespun accent of it. I’m in the USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I am not familiar with this actress, as I am from the US, but I appreciate how she was so selective in choosing these fragrance projects and hoing with top notch perfumers–unlike so many American celebrities who seem to slap their name on an endless supply of scents destined for a drug store near you. I would select the discovery set if I were to win, although I expect 811 would be my favorite with its clove and honey notes. Thank you for this draw.

  • How could i not want to try perfumes described as “small stunning miracles”? They all sound lovely and each has a certain appeal to me. I will make 411 Intenso my choice should I win, It has many notes that I love. I am in the US.

  • NiceVULady says:

Robert’s descriptions are always so inviting. Everything he writes makes you want to try the scent. I think I’d find that the 811 is the one which appeals to me the most. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • I liked how Robert made the scents so visually, so alive by transposing their aromas into so many images. I would like to have “411 Intenso” as I love chypre perfumes. I live in Europe.
    Thank you.

  • “Haunting, wistful, and beautiful as a daguerreotype seen through the sheerest bridal veil lens.” How can I resist a perfume thus described, especially since I am myself a black-sheep-of-the-family Aunt? 411 Intenso would be my choice. I’m in the US.

  • Wow, this line sounds very interesting. For me, it’s a toss up between 611 and 811. Tough choice. I most loved learning about Giovanna. Brazil turns out some beauties. The most beautiful woman in the world to me is Adriana Lima. Another Brazilian.

  • doveskylark says:

All of the decscriptions of the fragrances appeal to me, but as someone who spends a lot of time in São Paulo, I am very intrigued by 811. São Paulo is indeed gritty and non-stop energy, yet being in Brazil, the insouciance of the tropics is always whispering in the air.
I would definitely choose 811. I live in the USA.

  • Thank you for review.
Beutiful woman- she is famious not only in Brazil or Latin America, almost in Russia, Armenia and other former USSR countries. And I am pleasantly surprised knowing her niche brend. Good luck, Giovanna!!!
I like all of the descriptions, especially the on for 411 Intensi.
And I would like to win 411 Intensi.

  • Francesca says:

I’m just blown away with the emotion about the fragrances in this review. It presents like a feast to me , a feast of Brazil which is a country dear to my heart❤️ It’s large, it’s generous, warm and full of energy that sways and greets and loves intensely. Thank you. Conveyed brilliantly. I’d love to experience any of these- so I have to choose one? I’ll go 611 to begin. Tuberuse, expansive floral and edgy I my mind. Bring it in. I’m in NZ and thanks so much for the generous worldwide draw

  • I love how she is so involved with the creation of her fragrances. She seems a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it head on. I am not familiar with her but will do some research. I would love the 811 Absoluto. I am in the US. Kudos Robert on a great article.

  • I rarely give a celebrity fragrance even a sniff, but it is different if it is a celebrity who has true passion for the art of fragrance, not just putting something out there to make some quick cash. I would choose the 611 Extremo, comparing it to a botanical garden is a scent I would love to capture in a bottle. I often visit botanical gardens when I vacation. Beautiful photos!! I live in the US. Thanks for introducing us to so many artisans.

  • Really like the details the review was written with.
I love spicy scents with a light hint of floral.
I’m all in on the 811 Absoluto (it’s the one I choose for the draw).
    In US

  • I am glad that there are celebrities interested in creating a high quality perfume line, usually they are pretty cheap smelling. The second part of the name though, is quite in tone with what happens now in perfumery: “intenso”, “extremo” and “absoluto”. But from the reviews they sound interesting and especially 611 Extremo with the description of a perfume as lush, tropical, humid and heady as Rio itself. So would like to try it the most. (US)

  • Iuno Feronia says:

They all three Sound beautifully but my choice woulb be Rio – aka 611 Extremo. Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • This gives me hope for Celeb fragrances! I’d love to try the discovery kit and am in the US.

  • BlessedTA says:

I enjoyed reading about how they started the company.

    411 sounds lovely.

I’m in Canada. Thanks for the chance.

  • RoseMacaroon says:

So many vivid images in this review, it was such an enjoyable read, and also love knowing about this actress I would never know existed! Really beautiful writing. I was so drawn into the imagery/ideas for 411 Intenso, plus the herbal/astringent thing is super-compelling to me right now, so that would be my pick.
I’m in the US, and huge thanks for the review and draw!

  • Great review Robert! I have been really curious about these and I love your enthusiasm. Since the description for 411 captured me the most but 811 was made by the perfumer for like this I will let you decide
    I live in the US
Thanks for the information on Osme Perfumery here in the US

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the review of celebrity creations. All the three sounds great! Looks like No 11 is lucky for her. My choice of interest is 611 tuberose dominated, a fragrance with sensual and spicy notes that leave an unforgettable trail.
Thanks to COURTOIS/mourot, Lionel Guignard, and Edson Fernandes for the generosity; and Cafleurebon for the opportunity. Pakistan

  • MichelleU says:

I grew up watching “El Clon”, so my admiration for Giovanna Antonelli is clear and I was super excited when I found out that she launched 3 fragrances!

Best things is that Robert reviewed them and I love reading his reviews.

611 Extremo seems great as I love Tuberose!

I am a reader from the EU. Wish you all the best!

  • I love how Robert described all the scents, including the one with the “black sheep” aunt…and how he made sure, before anything else, to let readers know these are not your typical Celebuscents (thank the perfume gods!) I also liked how he himself had spent time in Brazil and let readers know these match up to their inspirations.

Due to the rapturous descriptions of all three perfumes I would choose the sampler set of all three!! Why? To be able to experience the beauty of all three instead of just one perfume (no matter how gorgeous) over & over. If I did have to choose just one it would probably be 611 Extremo followed closely by 811 Absoluto…tuberose and epicurean green floral orientality! YUM

I live in the US. Due to this it is the first I have heard of this beauty Giovanna Antonelli and I am very thankful for the generous draw and to be able to read about them here on Cafleurebon!

Brightest blessings to all staff, readers and the plethora of perfume peeps involved!

  • rodelinda says:

I never shy away from a celebrity perfume when I find out that the celebrity was actually involved with the making of it. All of these sound so lush and well-made, but 611 Extremo is that one that’s calling my name due to the tuberose. I want to leave “an unforgettable trail”! I’m in the US. Thanks for the drawing.

  • xXxrootxXx says:

Robert’s descriptions are fantastic. when he writes makes you want to try the fragrance . 811 definitly appeals to me the most. Thanks for the draw. I live in the good ole USA

  • kaitracid says:

It’s good to hear that there are celebrities wanted to create fragrances and they are involved in the process. The written gold plate on the bottle reminds me of By Kilian 🙂
Although I’ve never been even close to Rio, I am fascinated on how the city looks and vibrates and the description of 611 Extremo that is inspired by the Rio Botanical Garden make me want to look no further. Thanks for the draw! US

  • What a great read this was! Really got an idea about the house. I’d love to win 811! I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!
