New Perfume Review: David Jourquin Paris (Anne-Sophie Behaghel) Cuir Venitien + Bal Masqué a Venise Draw

Lucrezia Donati in the film Da Vinci's Demons

“An all-night party in a rose-colored palace” where revelers dance masked. A waft of bitter orange, of face powder and vermillion lipstick announces a vision of lovely artifice as she enters the grand ballroom: powdered jeweled wig, silk roses pinned in a cascade at her décolletage; a lace mask through which dark eyes glimmer in the incandescence of the ballroom.

Colombina from CommediaDell'Arte

Her costume telegraphs that she is Colombina from la Commedia Dell’Arte, history’s eternal clever wench — Despina in Don Giovanni, Maria in Twelfth Night and every best friend in movies who is cleverer, funnier and sexier than the leading lady. The scent that dances around her is at once baroque and modern: brandied plums and cottony roses combined with the finest suede and slinky musk: Cuir Venitien by David Jourquin, which I named as the Best Feminine Fragrance at Tranoi  this past September.

Like the masks of the carnival, there is a sense of dress-up about Cuir Venitien. In the opening, there is a delicate whiff of pancake makeup and face powder, and, in the dry down, the mellow, barely detectable cedar of, perhaps, an old wood stage. And it echoes of one of the great beauties of times past. With its unapologetic overdose of Prunol, Cuir Venetien recalls Edmond Roudnitska’s original Rochas Femme (the first fragrance to feature Prunol), with its delicious mélange of fine leather and plum. But where Femme goes earthy and animalic, hinting at dark things in the boudoir, Cuir Venitien dons her powdered wig and pulls her corset tight.

David Jourquin and perfumer Anne-Sophie Behaghel have used Prunol brilliantly here: its entrance, like Cinderella, is a showstopper and all eyes turn. Created by Symrise in the 1940s, Prunol has been described as “ripe plum prune” but to me, it is more fascinatingly complex. At different moments it has characteristics of brandied plums, golden fruitcake stuffed with raisins. There’s a hint of cardamom and of nutmeg and then baked black cherry. Visions of sugarplums dance in my head.

But then, when its plum brandy and spice opening recedes, the Prunol in Cuir Venitien metamorphoses into a rosy peach just off the tree. Then it transforms back into plum, then peach again, in a dance that continues for some time. A downy rose and a trail of spicy jasmine, much like the smell of paper whites, curl around each other like calligraphy.

In Cuir Venitien’s final act, lipstick rose takes center stage with a soft, candied femininity. The plum-peach note weaves in and out, sewing the flowers and suede together like an elegant leather glove. In its bold use of Prunol but restrained composition, Cuir Venitien has an elegant cheekiness, a refined banter. It is a modern perfume for timeless women.

Notes: Bergamot, bitter orange, aquatic effect, plum, prunol, passion fruit, May rose, fresh jasmine, Atlas cedar, Leather, white musks. Longevity is good – about 4-6 hours. Sillage is moderate but not overwhelming.

Disclaimer: I received my sample from David Jourquin – many thanks. Opinions are my own.

  • I haven’t smelt anything from this brand and I have not smelt vintage Rochas Femme. I live in Romania (EU).

I have longed for a fruity-lipstick-rose fragrance for quite some time now, even though I’m a man. 🙂 I have tried some with samples, but I have no full bottle.

What appeals to me from the review is the intertwining of peach in the composition. Again, even though I’m a man, I find peach wonderful in a fragrance!

    Thank you for the giveaway.

  • Lauryn, your review makes me so curious! Cuir Venitien seems to be really beautiful with peach and rose combo. I haven’t tried Rochas femme and David Jourquin perfume before.
Thank you for the chance! (EU)

  • I have never smelled any perfume of David Jourquin. This one has an appealing name, I love leather, fruity leather, or floral leather, Of course I have smelled the prunol in Femme de Rochas, a masterpiece! I would be happy if I could smell this new interpretation of a leathery-peachy-woody perfume.
I am in EU, Thanks for the draw.

  • First let me say those leather sleeved bottles look so cool and give them a great I want appeal 🙂 However I have only tried one of the fragrances from this house, but when I saw that Lauryn mentioned lipstick rose takes center stage with a soft, candied femininity I knew that this might be right up my alley. It sounds feminine and pretty and I would love to be entered into this draw. I have not tried Rochas Femme. I am in the US

  • I have never tried any fragrances from David Jourquin, but Cuir Venitien sounds lovely, I love the notes of plum, bitter orange, aquatic effect which I have never heard of but it sounds amazing! I love the that this reveiw took me through kind of a Venetion Christmas, with the smelles of brandied plums, golden fruitcake stuffed with raisins, that makes me smile! And the peach and rose combination and the visions of sugar plums dancing in Lauryn’s head, this fragrance sounds like it would be a lovely addition to a Christmas look! I live in US

  • The bottle’s design is not my cup of tea, but I love lots of Cécile Zarokian’s perfumes, so the bottle design doesn’t really matter here if the fragrance is great 😉
I live in Europe. Thanks for the draw !

Fruity leather always makes me very curious! I am new to David Jourquin’s fragrances and don’t know what to expect, but the notes sound very interesting. I have many pleasant memories about Rochas Femme and I’m excited about trying Cuir Venitien. Thank you for the draw! I live in the EU.

  • GrandmaGaga says:

Firstly, I must admit that Lauryn’s review actually has my heart palpitating; I’m not sure if it’s the fragrance or Lauryn’s captivating writing style but I need a moment……there, now! Yes, I have smelled vintage Femme Rochas…gorgeous! I have not had the pleasure of trying any of Mr. Jourquin’s perfumes but Cuir Venitien sounds luscious. I am in the US and, as always, thank you all and Mr. Jourquin for the chance.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

How apt! I just finished watching Cinderella (2015) moments before reading this review! No joke. I had it in mind while reading even before Cinderella was mentioned… the pictures were chosen well! I don’t know the Prunol scent fingerprint and have not smelled vintage Rochas Femme, but feel that I should know both. The review is captivating… “elegant cheekiness?”… count me in. I’m in the USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • I actually have a bottle of vintage Femme, so this would be a delight I think. The prune peach note intrigues me. I’m not familiar with Mr. Jourquin’s perfumes, but I would love to bet to know this one. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • acquiredtaste says:

Prunol appeals to me, as I have not smelt it before. I have not tried any perfumes from those brands. I have a US forwarding address despite living in Malaysia.

  • I am intrigued by the impertinent plum and prunol notes. The fragrance sounds lovely and feminine. I have a bottle of vintage Femme, and it is intoxicating.

I love Cuir Altesse from this house, a strong, beautiful leather.

Thank you for the draw! I am in the U.S.

  • I love vintage Femme and the smell of the plum peach note. I am really interested in seeing what Cècile Zarokian can do with it as O like her perfumes
    I live in Canada

  • Anna Trebisovskaya says:

I am not familiar with the brand. I have smelled Rochas, not sure how vintage it was. I love everything leather-related
    I live in US

  • Based on the review, this would be great for my wife, she’d love to wear it and I to smell it on her, fruity leather sounds nice. I haven’t tried any of the Mr. Jourquin’s fragrances or even the vintage Rochas Femme. I live in the EU.

  • Wonderful review and very lovely pictures. I never heard before about this brand, but from the review, Cuir Venitien sounds fabulous. I would very love a rose centric perfume, and this one sounds perfectly. And the bottle is amazing also. Thank you very much for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Great review and pictures. I’ve not heard about the brand but I want to try it now after reading the review.

    Hello from Canada.

  • I have never smelled any perfume of David Jourquin but my girfriend owns Rochas Femme and smes great on her!
I am in EU, Thanks for the draw.

  • Sounds really nice and although I have never smelled any fragrances by David Jourquin, I am pretty sure I will like this one. Thanks for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • Any perfume that would recall the original Rochas Femme is m cup of tea. The elegant cheekiness of Cuir Venitien must be trully wonderful! I am in the UK

  • This sounds nicer to me than Rochas Femme, which I love, so I’m intrigued to try Cuir Venitien.

I haven’t tried any Mr. Jourquin’s perfumes. In the US.

    Thank you for the draw!

  • Miss Almond says:

I’ve tried Rochas Femme many years ago, when I was a fan of Davidoff Cool Water and Arden Green Tea and everything heavier or more complicated than these – Femme included – smelled “ugly” to me. I think now I could like Femme and I’d like to try Cuir Venitien! Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU.

  • I loved the masquerade theme of this review. Fun and romantic! The scent itself also sounds fantastic. I am very curious about the brandied plum note. Reading about this it reminds me a bit of Femininité du Bois, which I really like. I think I would like this one more though, with the suede undertone, jasmine, and cardamom. I’ve never tried vintage Rochas Femme, but have been dying to. I have never tried a David Jourquin perfume, but would love to. I live in Canada, thank you.

  • What a wonderful choice of pictures! I love Venetian carnival masks and I believe a vintage-like, leathery and plum fragrance will match my perfume taste. Unfortunately I haven’t tried Rochas Femme or any of David Jourquin’s perfumes.
Thanks for the draw. Greetings from Norway!

  • I love everything about this fragrance: Venice, commedia dell’arte inspiration, the elegant bottle and the notes.
Femme Rochas is one of my favorites!
I live in Europe. Thanks for the draw.

  • I am intrigued by Cuir Venitien because it reminds one of a dressed-up woman and also shares dna with vintage rochas femme which I do possess. I have not tried any Jourquin perfume so far. I am in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I enjoy wearing vintage Rochas Femme. The smoky leathery peach notes brings a sense of elegance to me when I wear it. The review of Cuir Venetian made me think of elegance, especially the description of brandied plums, cottony roses, suede, musk. It does sound baroque.
I’ve never tried anything from this line, but congratulations are due for its win at Tranoi.
    I live in the USA.

  • Hi Lauryn, I had copied this sentence to highlight: ” brandied plums and cottony roses combined with the finest suede and slinky musk:”. It had made me want to smell this perfume before I went any further. Then I read on down and saw that you were the reviewer. I’m thinking you’re my scent twin! You certainly seem to be able to interest me in perfumes. You have a real gift with words! I love the Carnival references and the photos are divine. I’ve never heard of this line, but plum with leathery notes sounds divine. At the moment my favorite plum based perfume is Natori. Congratulations on another beautiful review!. USA

  • While not every vintage scent agrees with my skin chemistry, Rochas Femme is one of those which smell great on me. I’ve never smelled anything similar to Femme. Cuir Venitien sounds very much like something I must try! I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.

  • What a cute bottle! And if you say that what’s inside smells of leather and plum, I must try it!
I haven’t tried anything from this house and never smelled Femme by Rochas, so it is going to be a real (hopefully pleasant) surprise. Thank you! I live in the EU.

  • Leather! I am in a mood for leather scents recently, no matter if they are masculine or feminine. In fact a lot of vintage leather fragrances are more unisex than modern ones – I am guessing that Rochas Femme belongs to this category, and Cuir Venitien as well. “Guessing” because I haven’t tried any of them, but I would love to. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Thanks for a chance to win Cuir Venitien, the Best Feminine Fragrance at Tranoi. Great prize. Scent where plum and leather create a mixture. I am curious about Prunol a lot. Never sniffed Rochas Femme. I am in EU. Thanks!

  • Cuir Venitien sounds even better than Rochas Femme, which I love: “The Prunol in Cuir Venitien metamorphoses into a rosy peach just off the tree. Then it transforms back into plum, then peach again, in a dance that continues for some time. A downy rose and a trail of spicy jasmine, much like the smell of paper whites, curl around each other like calligraphy.” Cannot wait to try this beauty! I live in Europe, thank you!

  • I loved Lauryn’s description of her impression of Prunol (she makes it sound delicious!) and I have a weakness for face powder scents so I think Cuir Venitien and I would get along just fine. Sadly, I’ve never smelled true vintage Rochas Femme, though I do have a mini bottle that isn’t the latest version and it’s very seductive – I can only imagine what the vintage smells like! I’ve never experienced a David Jourquin fragrance, but I read about Cuir Venitien some weeks ago and had already earmarked it as something to try (I really do love my face powder scents!) so, win or not, I’ll be smelling it eventually! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Fantastic description. Beautiful perfume house & bottles. Never heard of Prunol in perfumes before. Never experienced a David Jourquin fragrance, but would love to try Cuir Venitien as leather is one of my favorite note in perfumes.
Thanks to the generosity of David Jourquin and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by giving my relative address of US.

  • “The elegant cheekiness of Cuir Venitien” as mentioned in this lovely and well written review (amazing pictures too) make it irresistible to me, I am certain that it must smell exceptionally good! I also loved Venice and the whole idea from Comedia del Arte, the smart bottle and the notes of it.
Femme Rochas is my favorite from Rochas house.
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank you for the lovely review and draw.

  • Forgot to mention that I have not experienced any perfume creation from David Jourquin house.

  • I have never heard of prunol and I’d love to sniff it. Plum and leather are among my favorite notes and the bottle is so pretty. I’m not a big fan of Rochas Femme though – I hope I would like Cuir Venitien much more. Thanks for the draw!

    (EU)

  • I don’t recall trying Rochas Femme, so I am even more curious about Cuir Venitien. “Brandied plums, golden fruitcake stuffed with raisins… a hint of cardamom and of nutmeg and then baked black cherry” sound fabulous and mouth-watering, plus I love Venice, so I can’t imagine not loving Cuir Venitien. Never tried any fragrance by David Jourquin and I’m glad one of us would have this opportunity. Thank you for the draw, I live in Europe.

  • “Like the masks of the carnival, there is a sense of dress-up about Cuir Venitien. In the opening, there is a delicate whiff of pancake makeup and face powder, and, in the dry down, the mellow, barely detectable cedar of, perhaps, an old wood stage. And it echoes of one of the great beauties of times past”. Sounds great, and the Carnival time approaches. I think it would be a great fragrance for celebrating the season, and a surprising one, since I don’t know Femme or any David Jourquin’s perfumes. Thank you for the giveaway. EU.
