New Perfume Review Cognoscenti No. 17 Civet Chypre by Dannielle Sergent + Taming the Beast Draw

Dannielle Sergent of Cognoscenti

Cognoscenti is a brand “…for those who know.” Dannielle Sergent is definitely in the know, having now released five perfumes under her beautifully packaged label.  No. 17 Civet Chypre is no exception, an example of the perfectly formed chypre (a classic combination of oakmoss, labdanum and bergamot) enfolding both floral and slight tobacco notes.  To her credit Dannielle has found a spectacular ethical version of civet from Firmenich and it is this cruelty-free touchstone upon which No. 17 is built. Opening with all the greenery and subdued citrus a chypre would call for, a green Italian bergamot fruit nestled among Tunisian neroli flowers produces an acreage of oakmoss absolute within which the elusive civet hides.

Cognoscenti has been purposely created to be unisex and despite neroli, ylang ylang and Anatolian rose quickly defining the borders of this oakmoss territory, the florals are refined, tamed and ultimately rendered into floral filigree by the amber, musk and certainly civet which is working it's magic upon familiar notes before we can even suss out it's resting place.

A passenger in this olfactory safari, I notice the closer we get to the heart of the jus, the closer I feel to this wild animal somewhere within the slowly unfolding chypre; neroli taking bergamot's place as leader of the pack, the rose encouraged and bolstered by the ylang. A golden hue starts to form within the green air. We are getting closer to the game. Or is it we who are game?

This realization of role reversal comes when during dry-down, this 'golden' amber/musk has captured the floral and moss, forming its den- it's sensually scented markings of home. We have the unique and honored role of house guest of the civet.

The civet note is not the centerpiece of the composition rather it is the linchpin which brings everything else to center. No. 17 is revealing a definite musk, but not one of intense animalic nature. Recalling perhaps a resting place among the moss and petals in the garden of Madame Pompadour, the Amber accord is heightened into a liquid gold, neither gourmand, leather nor fossilized.

Dry down is composed of this liquid gold accord- amber and musk- with crushed petals floating on it's serene surface. To bring your nose to  your wrist, is to dive beneath the neroli and rose, into chypre and civet infused waters with one last breath of mossen air.  This enticing aroma will last well into tomorrow.

Perhaps it is the natural tendency of civet to hold back the fleeting nature of essential oils, or perhaps it is Dannielle's background as architect and  painter with a keen ability to blend the colors of her palette but normally fleeting notes are extended, elongated and extended almost by magic. Citrus notes which should, by now, be a fragrant memory are still present in the dry down. No. 17 Civet Chypre is for those who know that a great Chypre is hard to come by these days.

Notes: Neroli, Bergamot, ylang-ylang,  Rose, Civet, oakmoss, amber, musk

Disclosure: I received my sample for promotional consideration

  • I want to try this because it is civet and a civet that I’ll probably never get the chance to experience without this draw. USA

  • This line alone makes me want to try No. 17 – A passenger in this olfactory safari, I notice the closer we get to the heart of the jus, the closer I feel to this wild animal somewhere within the slowly unfolding chypre; neroli taking bergamot’s place as leader of the pack, the rose encouraged and bolstered by the ylang. It sounds exotic! I’ve never actually tried a chypre, so I have no idea if I like them or not, but I’d love to find out! Thanks for this awesome draw, I’m in the US.

  • I’m old enough to remember proper chypres from the past; this new one sounds like a must-try! I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • This sounds beautiful! I do like some chypres, and I do love bergamot so I would love to try this 🙂 I am in the US, thank you.

  • Yes, I love chypres: Chanel No. 19, Serge Lutens Chypre Rouge, and Tom Ford Noir de Noir are amongst my favorite scents. So, I’d love to try this! Thanks for the draw. Am in the US still.

  • I’m not all too familiar with chypres, but have liked a few of the ones I’ve tried. Thank you for this draw, and I would be excited to try how this floral combination with civet will work. I am in the US. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the review and draw! Neroli, bergamot and amber appeal to me. I love fruity chypres: Eau de Soir, Mitsouko and Jubilation 25.
    I’m in the U.S.

  • I like all olfactive families and I love civet note in perfumes (Peau d’Espagne – Santa Maria Novella; Cuir Mauresque – Serge Lutens; Petroleum – Histoire de Parfums; Oud 27 – Le Labo…). I’d like to win a sample from Cognoscenti because this brand is impossible to find in EU.
    Thanks!

  • I would like to try it as I was much impressed by no.19, a while ago and as I am keen to experience a chypre/civet new (and rare…) composition
    I live in Israel
thanks for the review, Ein Sof and for the draw

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I am interested in Civet Chypre because it seems like an attempt to create a classic formula but with modern and ethical essences..in other words, Danielle is trying to show classic feels can be developed using modern ingredients. I also like the fact this is a unisex creation because I consider all perfumes to be unisex even though one can say some have more feminine or more masculine appeal but a good scent is genderless. Rose smells good, doesn’t matter whether a man smells it or a woman. I like chypres and am lucky to have vintage formulas of expert chypres such as coty and mitsouko but my most prized chypre may be original dioressence esprit de parfum.

thanks for the lovely draw. I am in the US

  • I am a huge fun of chypres notes in perfumes and one of my favorite perfumes is Tom Ford’s Noir. For this reason I would love to try Cognoscenti No. 17 Civet Chypre by Dannielle Sergent !

  • Taffynteddy+1 says:

  • “No. 17 is revealing a definite musk, but not one of intense animalic nature. Recalling perhaps a resting place among the moss and petals in the garden of Madame Pompadour, the Amber accord is heightened into a liquid gold, neither gourmand, leather nor fossilized.” ……..sounds very good . I like chypre, especially I enjoy the bergamot and labdanum notes. I am from the EU

  • Chypres are definitely something I have learned to appreciate as I’ve gotten older. Now I find myself craving them in certain situations, like helping me deal with something stressful. Would love to try and I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the chance.

  • I’m from Spain (EU)
Why I want to try this scent? Cognoscenti + civet + oakmoss, do I need to say more? It’s awesome for sure!
    Thank you for the draw

  • Fall often says “musk” to me, so I love that it has a musk note; Jovan Musk was my “gateway” fragrance when I was just a kid; as an adult, I fell farther down the rabbit hole with Mitsouko, so chypres are also a favorite! I live in the U.S. — thanks much!

  • I really like chypres so I’m interested in trying this one, I wonder how the animalic twist will be.
    I’m in the EU, ty

  • Closer to the Wild? That’s the red light I needed! Thank you! I would really like to try No 17, if that’s how I could visit Africa in an instant!
I am a chypre lover, as well – give me Gabochard, give me Aromatics Elixir, give me everything with oak moss in it!
I am in Bulgaria (EU), and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the chance!

  • 17 is my lucky number. I love chypres (usually the fruity ones but I am very interested to try an animalic one). I am in the EU

  • Jennifer Witt says:

I would love to try this scent because I love chypre fragrances! They make me happy. I live in the US.

  • chypres are my favorite type of fragrances and seem perfect for year long wear. Looking at the list of notes which include civet, oakmoss and bergermot I am further intrigued as to how No 17 smells. I’m in the U.S. thanks for the draw!

  • Sharyl Morris says:

I adore chypres (oakmoss, really), and would love to try something with civet! I’m in the US as well. Thanks so much for the draw!

  • Civet, bergamot, oakmoss, amber, and musk are all notes I love, The golden nature sounds fascinating, and I’m particularly interested in the fact that it’s unisex (since I’m often deterred by too many florals). I’m in the U.S. Thanks!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I want to try No 17 because I don’t believe I’ve ever experienced a true chypres, but this one sounds amazing, I do like Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia – more of a fruity chypres. I live in the US.

  • Civet and oakmoss and add some ylang-ylang….I’m there! I would love to give this a whirl especially since I have always wanted to, but never had the chance to check out Danielle’s brand. I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m not a chypre person but bottega veneta both pour femme and HOMME were just amazing. Mitsouko is a classc example of a chyypre fragrance but the saltiness of oakmoss was too much for me. I like the notes in no. 17, who knows it might be another chyypre I may enjoy.
    Thanks USA

  • I have come to love chypres, to truly appreciate them, though it took a while. But this one, with the amber accord “heightened into a liquid gold,” that’s what really grabs me. I’m intrigued. Thanks so much for the draw! In the U.S.
