New Perfume Review: Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve (Jean-Phillipe Clermont/ Marie Salamagne) + Golden Eye Draw

The last days of autumn have arrived, dripping wet, grey and cold.   The Big Leaf Maples have shed their final round of leaves, covering the lawns and garden patches with golden, soggy carpets.  Winter is still more than a month away.  As I sit by the fire, wrapped in a cozy throw, sipping a cup of spiced tea, I am already dreaming of my spring garden while comfortably luxuriating in the newest scent from Atelier des Ors – Iris Fauve.

Iris Fauve, introduced at Pitti in September 2016, is the sixth fragrance from the new perfume house Atelier de Ors. The founder of the house, Jean-Phillipe Clermont and the house perfumer Marie Salamagne of Firmenich, share a passion for French haute perfumery.

Their fragrances are created from the most precious essences and exclusive raw materials, presented in glimmering sunburst patterned glass bottles, mirroring the flecks of the 24 K gold floating in the perfume.

Iris Fauve translates to "Tawny Iris".  The first image that comes to this gardener's mind is of the North American wild flower, Iris fulva, also known as the Tawny or Copper Iris.  That being said, the Iris Fauve perfume is so much more than my mental image of this simple, native water iris. To my nose, Iris Fauve is the scent of rich golds, effervescent blues and glowing purples – a fragrant image of that most luxuriously textured garden flower, the Bearded Iris.

Iris Fauve opens with a fresh, realistic, transparent scent – the iris fragrance I experience every spring when I bury my nose in the flowers, fresh cool, lightly powdered with a hint of rosemary and fern-leaf. This realism quickly warms to a velvety-spiced blend of cinnamon, bergamot, orris and Liatris.  Liatris odoratissima is another North American native plant, also known as Deer's Tongue or Vanilla Leaf. Liatris absolute is notable for a slightly dusty vanilla effect, at once powdery and green, with nuances of bitter earth and fresh cut hay.

To me Liatris is the perfect pendant to the bouquet of orris, bergamot and cinnamon.  The vanilla quality of the Liatris is understated and subtle enough to add warmth and sweetness without turning the perfume gourmand.   As the fragrances dries down the bergamot adds a bit of sparkling tang to the spiced iris, giving an uplifting, cozy yet elegant and sensual effect to the composition.

Iris Fauve is quite long lived on my skin. With the exception of the initial transformation from cool to warm, there are no radical changes over the eight or more hours I enjoy the fragrance, but rather a subtle progression of scent, still recognizable as iris, but maturing as a breath of myrrh, then an undercurrent of sandalwood and finally as labdanum, musk and a suggestion of the original realistic bloom – a dream of spring on this cold November evening.

Fragrance notes:  Bergamot, cinnamon, orrisroot, Liatris, cypress, patchouli, vetiver, cedar, labdanum, myrrh, sandalwood and musk.

Disclaimer:  Many thanks to Atelier de Ors for the samples of Iris Fauve.  My opinions are my own.

This article is such a coincidence because just today I was reading about an iris-centered fragrance called angel’s dust. I am intrigued by this fragrance because it is from a french brand but it seems to have been inspired by the flowering species in North America. This is an iris fragrance with blue and purple auras. Thanks a lot for the generous draw. I have not yet smelled any fragrance from Atelier des Ors. I am in the US.

  • Thanks for the nice review! I would love to try Iris Fauve because cinnamon is one of the notes that always picques my interest.
Haven’t tried any Atelier des Ors perfumes. (EU)

  • ” A dream of spring on this cold November evening….” sounds like an amazing description! I live in Europe and I never tried any Atelier des Ors fragrances.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I’ve tried Rose Omeyyade which is my latest big love. Iris Fauve sounds lighter and more powdery, but what makes me most curious is the promise that it is “a dream of spring on this cold November evening”. Ahh that would be lovely! Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I love the smell of purple bearded iris in the spring. Even though perfumes use the rhizome butter, I would love to sniff the fresh flower in a scent. I live in the US. Lune Feline is my favorite of the house so far.

  • Wonderful review, it was so amusing to read. I have never had a chance to try any of Atelier des Ors fragrance. I would very love to win Iris Fauve. This perfume is sounds incredibly fabulous, and the bottle is also beautiful. Thank you very much for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Lovely review! Iris Fauve looks cozy! Liatris absolute note sounds really intriguing to me. Thank you so much for the chance to try!
I never heard about this line before.

  • I have not tried any Atelier des Ors fragrances though I have been hearing quite a bit about them lately, much of it favorable. Atelier des Ors Iris Fauve sounds lovely. I like the comparison to the North American native Liatris. I live in teh US.

  • Gail, you got me with ” a bit of sparkling tang to the spiced iris, giving an uplifting, elegant and sensual effect to the composition. ” sounds beautiful.

I have not tried any Atelier des Ors fragrances.
Thanks for the draw! US resident

  • My love of iris increases daily and the spiced vanilla, without being gourmand, sounds wonderful. I’ve tried other Atelier des Ors and liked them very much, but this is likely to be my favorite! I am in the US.

  • I have not tried any Atelier des Ors fragrances but I am intrigued by the beautiful bottles and the description of the scents. I love Iris fragrances and have tried some that are more gourmand, some more dry and some that are more on the elegant side. I love my Iris a bit powdery, a bit dry and I love when it opens with a cool not but warms up on my skin. I would love to have the opportunity to enter this draw. Very exciting. Thank you so much. I am in the US.

  • Ingredients to die for…and the use of color here very evocative- passionate I might say. Never tried this House and would be so willing. The bottle looks amazing so attention has been paid to the presentation from start to finish. That’s an art for sure. Much appreciation for the draw and making it worldwide (global draws are not scary everyone :)) I’m in New Zealand.

  • Beautiful review. I like the idea of using the liatris. Its different from the usual mix of ingredients. I’ve not tried this house and this fragrance sounds enchanting. Would love to win the draw. Thank you so much. I live in the USA.

I love cold November evenings and I love iris fragrances. I would love to try this one. Thank you for a great review and a generous draw.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Just in a broad way, I loved hearing about this scent in terms of temperature–beginning cool and transitioning to warm. I have to say the ingredients also appeal to me so much–Iris, spice, powder, and the slightly vanillic deer tongue (a really lovely smelling plant despite the kind of gross name). I’ve liked what I have smelled so far from this house–in particular Lune Feline, a sumptuous and smoky incense/vanilla that is just lovely and just about right for this time of the year. I would love to try this one! I’m in the US.

  • Was just browsing the Atelier des Ors lineup recently, because of Iris Fauve and the Harrod’s exclusive. Love the part where Iris Fauve invokes “the sense of Spring in Autumn”. where the transparent Iris is interspersed with the warmer resins. I live in Singapore.

  • Already a fan of Atelier des Ors and especially like Lune Feline a really sexy smoky vanilla that I share with my partner. Loved all the Iris information from Gail and how she captured the scent of a real Iris that changes to a more resinous vanilla scent
The art was beautify especially that eye
Thank you I wish I lived in NY to go to OSSWALD

  • What a great review, where the description has my nose watering to try this. I never heard of the note liatris until this article. Love iris.
Haven’t tried anything from this house. USA

  • I love iris, and the move from cool iris to warm spice is particularly intriguing! I wear a lot of florals, and I’m looking for something that better suits the season. Thanks for the review–this has me eager to try anything by Atlelier des Ors!

    I’m a US resident.

  • I love spicy iris and I love cinnamon, but I can’t imagine the smell of iris and cinnamon combined. This must be very unusual. I have never tried Atelier des Ors and I’d love to. Thanks for the draw. I live in Poland, EU.

  • This is what I do recently in the evenings: sitting under a blanket, drinking hot tea (or mulled wine) and dreaming of spring weather, spring flowers and long spring days. All I need to complete this picture is Iris Fauve. I live in Europe. thank you for so generous giveaway!

  • Gail’s description sounds so perfect, as i love earthy fragrances and the [ictures are absolutely gorgeous ! I haven’t tried any perfumes from this line.

I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.

  • Miss Almond says:

Iris is my personal queen of all flowers. It blends perfectly into my skin and lasts forever. I can’t resist trying every new fragrance with iris note, this one sounds delicious (I love myrrh too) and I hope I will be lucky this time. Thanks for the draw! I live in the EU.

  • Really loving the photos for this review! Iris Fauve sounds right up my street because i love iris perfumes. Haven’t tried any Atelie des Ors perfumes.
    In the US. Thanks!

  • cinnamon tree says:

I don’t know what looks and sounds more tempting, the notes or the bottle with those beautiful gold flakes inside! Just kidding, I know it’s the scent that counts. I’ve never tried any Atelier des Ors fragrance and I’d love to. I live in Europe, thank you for the chance.

  • Iris Fauve was the one that got my attention in your detailed story about Pitti (sp?) a month or so ago. It sounds so elegant and I love the bottle. Thanks for a descriptive review and pictures! And color me green with envy at these words, Michelyn: “I first met Jean-Phillipe at Esxence in 2015, where Pierre Guillaume of Parfumerie Generale hosted a dinner in Milan.” That’s a table I would have liked to have been at! Thank you for the review and the draw. USA

  • Sounds fantastic. I miss spring and the idea of a dream of spring on a cold November evening really speaks to me.
I’ve recently tried Aube Rubis. Oh my, what a wonderful fragrance, what a delicious blackcurrant note!
Thank you for the draw. I hope I will also like Iris Fauve.

    (EU)

  • The iris appeals to me, especially it’s staying all along the frag development- the name is beautiful, too
I never tried any of “Atelier des Ors”‘s fragrances- very difficult to get them in my country
Many thanks for the draw. I live in Israel

  • I just heard about Atelier des Ors perfume from this article so I have not tried any yet. Being created “from the most precious essences and exclusive raw materials” makes for an intriguing start. Nice to read the author enjoyed this new perfume over eight hours. USA 🙂

  • I really love the bottle. It’s so shiny like sun.About the scent i cant tell anything because i haven’t the opportunity to try the fragrance or any of the house, but i would like to see ”the dream of spring on this cold November”.
I live in EU.Ty for the draw!!!

  • Iris Fauve sounds great! My botanical knowledge are elementary, talking about perfumes I always think to only one type of iris, I never heard about Liatris Odoratissima, but your description of its odorous qualities suggests to me new horizons to explore.
In Atelier des Ors fragrances, the only one that I tried is Cuir Sacré and I like it very much, a luxurious and alluring leather scent!
    I live in EU.
    Thanks!

  • It’s currently so cold in London as well and I’m too dreaming of the spring flowers! In the meantime i take solce in the Christmas preparations! I have long admired the beautiful bottles of Atelier des Ors fragrances and have been meaning to try them ! i’d love to try Iris Fauve as I’m a sucker for Iris fragrances and this particular blend with deer tongue! I am in the UK!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

These bottle are gorgeous; it’s a true shame I haven’t smelled any of them yet! Iris is my favorite floral note, so this caught my attention right away. To pair it with liatris, another floral, is something I’ve never heard before. I’ve never seen liatris listed as a perfumery note, but as a native flower fan, liatris is one of the greats… I’d love to try this based on that alone. Thank you for the amazing draw! I’m in the USA.

  • I never tried the composition with orris blended with cinnamon and myrth. The transformation from cool to warm appeals to me. Thank you for this draw!
    I live in EU.

  • Gail, you have reviewed this perfume perfectly, the notes sounds really interesting. Thank you for the great draw!
I have never tried any perfumes from this line. EU

  • In the Atelier des ors range, I just know a little bit “Larmes du Désert” (one test only). I have to retest this one and more some day !

Iris is perhaps my favorite “note” (N°19, Iris Nazarena, Hiris, 31 Rue Cambon, …) and the described composition of Iris Fauve seems really attractive too (perhaps something like Cuir Ottoman, without the leather note, but more woody instead ?)

    I live in Europe.

Many thanks for this new draw 😉

  • This must be fabulous: so many fantastic, warm and optimistic notes! i’d love to test them on my skin. I have never tried Atelier des Ors before. Thanks for the draw! I live in Europe.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

The morning with the the US News didn’t start well but this Review is amazing, the perfume sounds very well balanced – I have never smelled Liatris. This morning we had our first Minus degrees (Celsius) and I am longing for some flowers in my garden or anywhere else.

I live in the EU, thanks for the draw!

All the best for the USA!

  • Spicy iris sounds like a perfect autumn or winter fragrance not only because of the flower reminding of spring, but iris note is actually warming in its powderiness.

I haven’t tried Atelier des Ors but heard many good opinions from my friends. Thank you for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • I am interested in the cinnamon and liatris notes in this perfume, and am also a fan of Iris. Have not yet tried any Atelier des Ors petfumes but am definitely interested! I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Turning from cold to warm and sweetness without turning gourmand sounds good to me. Liatris sounds very nice. Don’t know any of the Atelier des Ors fragrances, but Iris Fauve sounds wonderful to me. Thanks for the opportunity to win a bottle. I’m in EU.

  • I love iris fragrances and the addition of cinnamon to this perfume sounds wonderful!
I have never tried any Atelier des Ors. Thank you for the draw and review!

  • I would absolutely love to try this one. It sounds at once fascinating and breathtaking. I love that it transforms from cool to warm. So interesting! I like the idea of blending orris with cinnamon. I love both notes, but have never experienced them together. I was happy to learn about Liatris also. I wonder if I’ve seen it in the wild. This is my first time hearing about Atelier des Ors, so i will have to keep a look out. I live in Canada. Thank you so much for the draw.

  • concertslover says:

When I was looking this up on fragrantica to check out the notes I found it was easy to confuse with Atelier which appears to be a different house. This one checks all the boxes on my favorite scents and also has an unusual one in Orris Root, which I am unfamiliar with and look forward to trying. I enjoy the description of earthy and hay, takes me back to my country childhood.
    From USA

  • Oh my goodness, this sounds really wonderful! To be honest, you had me at ‘iris’, but the description of the liatris absolute is what really clinched it. “a slightly dusty vanilla effect, at once powdery and green, with nuances of bitter earth and fresh cut hay”? Yes please! If chosen, this would be my first experience of an Atelier des Ors scent, but now I’ll have to look them up because this one sounds divine. I’m in the US – thanks for the opportunity!

  • I haven’t tried Atelier des Ors yet, but I’d love to. This one sounds marvelous, as I was sold at iris and orris root, but your mention of Liatris had me researching further as this is the first time I’d heard of it being used in perfume. I’m in the US.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the wonderful review. The Deer’s Tongue as a note is very interesting that giving sparkling & sizzling vanilla smell. Never tried any of the Atelier des Ors fragrances, Larmes du Desert is on my want list. Would love to win this new launch Iris Fauve.

  • I do like the sound of warm cinnamon and fresh orrisroot in this perfume. Haven’t tried any Atelier des Ors fragrances.
Thank you for the draw! In the US.

  • When I hear about iris in a fragrance, I’m sold! The review sounds intriguing and I’d surely want a bottle. I haven’t tried any of their fragrances yet. I live in Europe.

  • I really enjoy learning about new plants when I read about fragrance. I have never heard of Liatris. I like that it’s also known as deer’s tongue or vanilla leaf. I like that this fragrance lasts a long time on the skin. My chemistry tends to absorb everything. I always search for perfumes that linger.
I’ve never tried anything from this line, but I checked the website and Cuir Sacre sounds very evocative.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love the notes and those fantastic golden sparkles in the bottle. I am sure I would like it. Thank you for the draw! EU.

  • What a promising review: ‘Iris Fauve opens with a fresh, realistic, transparent scent – the iris fragrance I experience every spring when I bury my nose in the flowers, fresh cool, lightly powdered with a hint of rosemary and fern-leaf’. I haven’t tried anything by Atelier des Ors and I think I am missing a lot. It would be lovely to test Iris Fauve. Thanks for the draw. Greetings from Norway.

  • I tend to gravitate to warm perfumes, although I love orris root and iris notes. I’m intrigued by Gail’s description of a cold-to-warm fragrance, as this sounds like something I would love. I haven’t tried Atelier des Ors but I looked at their website and their perfumes look lovely. I’m in the US.

  • Great set of notes in this one. I really love the bottle too. I’ve never heard of this house, but I’ll be sure to check out the rest of their collection

  • Stunning photographs as usual!! I adore fragrances in the gourmand line, but I think something just on the edge of gourmand would be a direction I would like my collection to go. This sounds great. Being long lasting is an added bonus. I cannot get over the beauty of the bottle, so sparkly and effervescent to the eye. I live in the U.S. Thanks for the wonderful draw!

  • Salim Khattak says:

Thanks for the nice review and photographs! The bottle is bottle and I adore the Iris fragrances. My favorite Iris perfume that I really enjoy is Dior Homme Intense. The Iris Fauve notes are interesting. Never tried any of Atelier des Ors but I’d love to.

  • I love this description: “To my nose, Iris Fauve is the scent of rich golds, effervescent blues and glowing purples – a fragrant image of that most luxuriously textured garden flower, the Bearded Iris.”
And the fact that it transforms between cool and warm. I think i might love this one!

  • The Liatris in this, which I have never heard of, producing a ‘dusty vanilla’ scent sounds intriguing…I’m trying to imagine a completely non-gourmand vanilla scent, as she describes it. I have not had the opportunity to try any of Atelier des Ors fragrances but would love to. I live in the US.
