One of my all-time favorite indie perfume houses has released a new scent, in the Geisha series, and their first since 2011.  The name of the fragrance is Geisha Vanilla Hinoki, and the house is Aroma M Perfumes, founded by perfumer Maria McElroy.

And in this season, where sticky gourmand florals are reported to be the new “it” style to buy, Geisha Vanilla Hinoki is a refined reproach to such candy-aisle-plus-jasmine fare. It is silky, sheer, light and ethereal.  This is not the perfume for lovers of fat, thick sweet sensations. Instead, Geisha Vanilla Hinoki is like wearing mist from the early morning hours, when the ground under your feet and the leaves overhead are drenched with dew.  The gourmand style is featured in an infusion of extremely rare Moroccan vanilla, combined with bergamot, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg at the open.

You wear Aroma M perfumes like clothing, not like fragrances.  I don’t think I will ever come across another line where the metaphor of an “olfactory wardrobe” actually becomes more of a literal statement.  Maria McElroy creates invisible garments that drape the wearer in looping strands of sophisticated softness.

Maria’s inspiration for this scent is to recreate the experience of visiting a traditional Japanese hot spring, and the addition of a key note – namely, the hinoki of the perfume’s title (a Japanese form of cypress), provides the elevated, emerald-tinged green woody feel behind the Moroccan vanilla and other spices.  There is also cedarleaf and lavender in the heart that definitely bring out the sauna woodiness and deep, underlying calmness upon which the entire fragrance rests upon.

She also sees Geisha Hinoki Vanilla as a “bedtime” scent (take this however you like, either as a calming evening scent to carry you off to Dreamland or something racier to wear while YOU are being carried off somewhere.)  And this meditative/sensual feel can be equally carried off by either a man or a woman, for those keeping score.

The drydown is languorous and blends in subtle herbal and woody notes, with more cedar wood and patchouli blending with amyris for another tonal facet to the gourmand feel.  The perfume lasts for several hours as well, with restrained sillage befitting its sophisticated, silken feel on the skin. The first time I sampled it, I was instantly calmed and felt slightly elevated, as if I’d just come out of a long session of sitting meditation.

So take Geisha Vanilla Hinoki as either a bedtime riaow-riaow scent, or a meditative fragrance for a misty morning. Or maybe it’s that this perfume might be the first-ever “afterglow” perfume.  However you wear it, it’s definitely one of my picks for Best of 2016 so far.

  • I’ve never tried an Aroma M perfume before and am intrigued by Pam’s point about a perfume that wears as fragrance, not clothing. Thanks for the draw!

I see this is one of Pam’s all-time favorite houses. That bodes well should I get to sample this. I’ll take Pam’s word for it when she speaks of the line as an “olfactory wardrobe”. That interests me. 🙂 US

I love that Pam states that Aroma M’s fragrances are made to be worn like clothing, not fragrances. That is how I feel about my favorite from the brand, Geisha Noir.. Geisha Vanilla Hinoki sounds wonderfully meditative. Thanks for the wonderful review and the draw, I’m in the US.

  • First I need to say that these pictures so perfectly evoke the feeling that the Aroma M line gives me. It is so beautifully packaged and the scents have such an identifiable DNA as being from the same family. I own about four of the line and would love to try vanilla hinoki. It sounds beautifully done. I live in the USA

  • I loved the fact that Pam thinks of this line as an olfactory wardrobe and the way she speaks of this house is a “Must Try” for me. I have never tried anything from Aroma M before, but after this article I’m all in! I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

Pam describes it as a scent to begin or end the day. I also enjoyed the Ikenaga Yasunari illustrations that accompanied the article. Aroma M fragrances represent the Japanese culture where gourmand is not big so I am intrigued about Arome M’s Japanese version of a gourmand fragrance. thanks a lot for the generous draw. I am in the US.

  • I love the sound of a meditative scent for a misty morning. The artowrk is stunning too! I am in the US, thank you!

Thank you to Pam for sharing Geisha Vanilla Hinoki with us. A fragrance that is both instantly calming and slightly elevating strikes a marvelous balance. I am intrigued by fragrances which are delicious but not quite edible, and this sounds like it fits my idea of wonderful.

I like the idea of a fragrance that can be both alluring and seductive, but also thoughtful and meditative. I think you’re right, the combination of both would make for a marvelous afterglow scent. Sounds mesmerizing.

  • I was really captured by the idea of wearing a fine mist, and that the collection is really like a wardrobe of clothing rather than perfume. This sounds like a really interesting scent, I’d love to try it. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

  • I enjoyed Pam’s review of Geisha Vanilla Hinoki and would love to clothe myself with this “meditative fragrance for a misty morning.”
