New Perfume Review: April Aromatics Erdenstern by Tanja Bochnig (2014) + We are Stardust Perfume Draw

cloud moon and stars

We are all made of star-stuff. Our bodies are made of star-stuff. There are pieces of star within us all.” -Carl Sagan

Berlin based botanical perfumer Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics, has released a new perfume, Erdenstern, in a new aroma family for her line- musk.  “Erdenstern” is a German word meaning “Earth Star”, and also is a concept in which the Earth belongs to all. We are presented with musk which not only alludes to a shared aroma of humanity’s connection to the earth, but the origins of our genesis, to the holy place between worlds of gods and mortals when ancients contemplating the stars, burned incense to communicate with divinities that traveled on distant points of light..

“And we are little 'Earthstars', Erdensterne. Each one in its own way. If we would all realize that, the world would shine so bright!!!” exclaims Tanja in explanation of the German name. Tanja's talent of seamlessly fusing botanical notes and accords allows for an unfolding of complex aromas, the hallmark of a true natural perfume. Erdenstern will task one to identify where one note ends and another begins. The perfume opens with a dark, wet leaf, freshly turned soil note- due to the seamless blending of vetiver into a botanical musk accord. This gives the impression of the autumnal equinox, of digging in the dirt- to plant, to build and to lay to rest. Beyond this earthen opening, the heart warms the cold earth with glowing resins of opopanox,  and a tobacco laced cocao as we pass through the mists of autumn and prepare for the winter solstice. This soil tinged incense glows throughout the dry-down, and ambrette seeds add a lovely sweetness to a fascinating ambergris accord.  Tanja Bochnig's  botanical version of this animal material is star quality itself, affecting the perfume in all the glorious ways real ambergris does.

Botanical perfumers offer a new definition of musk;  gone are the vicious animal extractions.   As this scent moves beyond musk as erotica or as an aphrodisiac, it offers instead the scent of our connection to ourselves and to humanity. Tanja has captured the human heart‘s capacity for compassion.  Erdenstern is the scent of hands clasped together in prayer or the closeness of a hug to someone in need.  Erdenstern clings to the skin, morphing, changing until we are one with nature, with all peoples past and present  yet is a scent that is intensely individual.

erdenstern reaching for the stars

During the holiday season when many of us can get caught up in commercialism of the material world,  Erdenstern is an olfactive reminder that we all exude our own personal musk which mingles with 6 billion others, hence we are all perfume unto each other- our bodies are factories of aroma singing the body electric, until the day we realize we all become erdensterne.

Notes: botanical musk accord, ambrette, vetiver, tabak, oakmoss, opopanox, cocao, botanical ambergris accord, infused with clear crystal and Herkimer diamond

I enjoy fragrances that remind one of human aroma..through Erdenstern, Tanja has also paid homage to the nature which is an important subject given the on-going climate crisis. My favorite from April Aromatics is Calling All Angels. Thanks for the lovely draw. I am in the US

  • I love the natural smell of people. Most people just smell good. My favourite from April Aromatics is Bohemian Spice, which rocks my world! Thank you for the generous opportunity,
    Carole

  • Holy Cow. SO many of my favorite notes in one scent? Erdenstern sounds amazing. My favorite April Aromatics is Calling All Angels.
I live in the U.S. Thank you very much for the draw!

  • I love the name of this perfume 🙂 I also love the smell of dirt, which sounds like it pops up in many of the layers. I am in the US, thank you!

  • I find this scent very intriguing – I haven’t tried a lot of perfumes with these notes. My favorite April Aromatics is Ray of Light, which is like happiness incarnate. This scent sounds completely different from Ray of Light – so I’d love to see if it would fit me too.

  • The notes sound fabulous and if its like anything else Tanja creates and touches, it will be a winner for sure. I also love the name especially in German since I am German. Would love to be entered in this draw. 🙂 I am in the US

  • I love musk perfumes and several April Aromatics perfumes. I think that Liquid Dreams is my favorite. I’m in the U.S. thanks!

I love the connection with the earth and the cycle of seasons represented by the opening notes of Erdenstern, as well as the concept of a botanical ambergris accord–fascinating!

I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing an April Aromatics scent and so cannot speak to a favorite, but I am giving San Francisco Rose the look of love (because ROSE. And a good cause in the bargain).

I am in the US and thank you for the draw!

  • I love the Carl Sagan´s motto as a basis of Erdstern scent. So far I haven´t had opportunity to try any of the April Aromatics scents and it would be my pleasure to do so. I live in Slovakia, EU.

  • Rosenlust is my AA fav so far but this one has so many of my dark & dirty favorites in it I may just go nuts. So perfect for the time of year. And what a beautiful message attached to it.
    Thanks for the draw!

I think the list of Erdenstern notes is just fantastic.
I really appreciate the reference to ancestral concepts present in our common cultures and into human soul.
I never had the pleasure of trying April Aromatics perfumes.
    I’m in EU. Thanks!

  • I love all the notes in Erdenstern and of course I love botanical fragrances! Not to mention how rare this fragrance is (1 liter!).
    Thank you!
    In the US. xo

  • Erdenstern sounds lovely as well in name as in notes. However, I have to admit that I’m a little bit shocked that Tanja uses accords creating this new fragrance. Which I suppose is a well thought move, but still I just loved the fact that Tanja only used natural ingredients. Calling all Angels is my favorite. I live in the Netherlands.

  • It’s such a wonderful name. I have not yet tried any oof Tanya’s perfumes, but just from reading the notes, I wanted to get my hands on ‘Unter den Linden’. Thank you for the draw. I live in the UK.

  • I have never tried any one of April Aromatics Perfume, but I heard about those fragrances. I love natural scents. These notes are sounds wonderful. I would very like to win.
    I’m from Europe.

  • This sounds amazing! It seems like the perfect time of year to launch this scent based on “Tanja has captured the human heart‘s capacity for compassion. Erdenstern is the scent of hands clasped together in prayer or the closeness of a hug to someone in need.”
My favorite April Aromatics is San Francisco Rose! I live in the US.

  • Great concept and a wonderful list of notes. The description of the earthy opening is particularly intriguing! I have only tried Unter den Linden from this line and it’s lovely. I’m in the US, thanks to all for the generous offer!

  • It’s such a lovely and touching idea for a perfume and I would love to see how that inspiration is translated into scent. I haven’t tried anything from April Aromatics, and I’m in the US.

  • I too love the name and the whole idea of Tanjas creative process! Tanja’s intent behind this newest creation is so needed NOW! Seriously, choose a favorite of April Aromatics for me that is difficult. I love Calling all Angels, Precious Woods are tops on my list right now. I wish the best of luck to everyone in this draw as this newest release sounds like the great bridge many of us need at present. I am in the US and many thanks to CaFleureBon, April Aromatics and the writers of CaFleureBon.

  • I am quite intrigued by the botanical animalic accords (ambergris and musk)!

The only April Aromatics composition I’ve tried (and therefore my favorite) is San Fransisco Rose.

Thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Wow, only a liter. Precious juice indeed! The only April Aromatics I have tried is the rose scent recently produced for former editor Tama, lovingly made to help in a difficult time. It is a gorgeous rose, and if the other scents are anything like this, then I would love to try them all. USA

  • I’m quite interested in the musk accord ambergris and cocoa combination. My favorite April Aromatics is Precious Woods. USA

  • San Francisco Rose is wonderful, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about all April Aromatics (which I’ve not had the opportunity to try). These would consider these words great hyperbole if they were about almost anyone else -“Tanja has captured the human heart‘s capacity for compassion,” but from Tanja Blochnig? I believe it completely, as she’s proven herself to be truly special individual who can place compassion at the heart of her business. That is rare indeed and I congratulate her. Thank you for the wonderful review. And for the giveway.

  • I love the new way of conceptualizing a botanical musk and the notes listed are interesting to contemplate together. I’ve only smelled calling All Angels so far and would welcome the opportunity to sample another of her creations. I’m in the US.

  • The concept sounds actually amazing. I haven’t had a chance to try anything from this line. And what a beautiful name “Erdenstern” is? The list of notes are equally intriguing. I am from the UK. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • What appeals most to me about Erdernstern is the botanical ambergris accord. I haven’t been able to narrow down which April Aromatics fragrances I would like to try…they all sound amazing. I’ll probably end up with the complete sample collection. 🙂 I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • What I found so appealing in Tanja’s creations (I was given the chance to experience Rosenlust perfume creation where rose ingredient associates with love and it is a fact) here in “Erdenstern’s” case I love the way she associates natural ingredients with higher notions like sacredness (the need of humans to pray to their gods) in this case the association of musk with the burning incense, the need of mortal nature to reach for the divine
The fact that Erdenstern changes on to the skin, transforming, yet remaining intensely individual capturing human heart‘s capacity for compassion a scent that recalls clasped hands together in prayer or a hug to someone in need.
I live in EU and I want to thank April Aromatics and Cafleurebon for the mere chance you are giving us to experience an amazing creation from the very inspired artist like Tanja Bohning is.
My best wishes for a happy holiday time to Mrs. Bohning in person and to the Cafleurebon team as well.

  • I enjoyed the back story of this new fragrance, as well as the “personal musk” concept. Musk scents are at the top of my favorites. I have not personally worn a fragrance from this house. U.S.

  • I love the idea of the closeness, skin to skin of a hug and in my mind Musk crosses into these realms, an intimacy of sorts. Not a sexual intimacy but one that transcends the physical. Tanja has such a reputation as a Perfumer I can only imagine it is spectactular. Thanks for the draw and review. I’m international.

  • I love the name and the concepts behind this scent! I am also interested in the botanical musk and ambergris accords that Tanja has created. My favorite so far is Calling All Angels.
I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Thank you everyone!

You are ALL stars! shine on, shine on!

Good Luck in the draw and see you next time!

  • What intrigues me about Erdenstern is the soil tinged incense, opponnax, ambergris accord and ambrette musk. It sounds very nice and something I would love to try. My favorite thus far is Unter den Linden . Im in the US. Thank for the draw

  • I love botanical musk accords, especially if they include ambrette seed and perform the “skin-clinging” magic, and I love mineral accords that smell like soil and dirt, so this new scent is right up my garden alley. If I had to chose, I would say my two favourite April Aromatics scents – so far!- are Ray of Light and Calling All Angels, but this a perfume line of incredible quality, all around. Tanja is a real star.
I live in the US of A. Thank you for this great draw!

  • the concept and the artistic effort to translate it appeal to me
My favourite AA is “Unter der Linden”
    I live in Israel
thanks a lot for the chance

  • Erdenstern, what a lovely name! This alone makes me curious and want to try this perfume. I know Rosenlust and like it a lot.
I live in Berlin, Germany, just like the perfumer!

  • I’ve unfortunately not yet tried any of April Aromatics, I’m in the EU and I like the concept of approaching human aromas.

  • The description of the meaning of Erdenstern really appeals to me, even more then the description of the progression from earthy to resins to warm incense and musk (whoa, wow. I am so there). I especially liked: “hence we are all perfume unto each other- our bodies are factories of aroma singing the body electric, until the day we realize we all become erdensterne.”

It reminds me of a speech I heard at a wedding about fate and how at one time the atoms that made up our bodies were stardust, and fate and connection

Calling All Angels is the other one which calls to me the most.
    USA
Thank you for the review and draw

  • The idea behind the fragrance is brilliant – we are all stars on Earth! Moreover, vetiver+cocoa+tobacco sounds like my kind of balancing winter scent, working against depression, and turning things better in communicating my thoughts and ideas towards others!
My Tanja’s favorite creation so far – Calling All Angels!
Thank you for the chance! I am in Bulgaria (EU).

  • I just moved to Germany so I didn’t know the translation of the Erdernstern, but it sounds great. The combination of the notes sounds very intriguing so I am looking forward to try this and other perfume from April aromatics since I haven’t tried any so far. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • With notes of tobacco, vetiver and opoponax, Erdenstern sounds like a winner in my books. I also like the name. It’s very poetic.
From Tanja the only one I know is the lusty Nectar of Love.
I live in Europe. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am fascinated by ambergris, so if I had to pick one reason for my interest, it would be that! My fave from April Aromatics is Bohemian Spice, and I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw, all!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

That Erdernstern is nfused with clear crystal and Herkimer diamond sounds very magical and appealing. I live in the US and have not yet had the pleasure of trying an April Aromatics Perfume.

  • I like the concept that world belongs to all of us. I have not tried any April Aromatics yet. I am in the EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • Thank you for the draw! I am drawn to Erdenstern by the concept of us all being “little earth stars” … and then by the list of notes. I’m very interested in trying the botanical musk and ambergris.

My favorite from the April Aromatics line is Calling All Angels. I’m in the US.

  • I am actually most curious about the “botanical musk” element in Erdenstern perfume. I have not had the good fortune to try April Aromatics perfumes yet, I don’t believe they are yet available in The Netherlands, where I live. Therefore the draw excites me…Thanks!!
