"View of Chateau Marly" by Martin Pierre Denis

Parfums de Marly is a company that fuses together two of the greatest passions in the court of Louis XV: fragrance and purebred horses. In the late eighteenth century, his court was referred to as “the perfumed court”. Fragrance was even added to fountains. Creative director Julien Sprecher has overseen the creation of an entire stable of scents dedicated to that elegant fragrance style that filled Chateau Marly and the noble equine grace of the royal steeds.

With Galloway (2013) Parfums de Marly focuses on a stallion native to Scotland and Northern England. Its smaller size is more than matched by its strength and stamina. All this house’s scents (click here to read our reviews) capture the prestige and passion of equine beauty. Much like the groom in the famous statue “Les Cheveaux de Marly” by Guillaume Coustou, creative director M. Sprecher has bridled these noble creatures in perfume form, capturing all their intensity, maintaining a regal yet untamed feeling.

Galloway horses

Galloway begins like a stallion trotting out into a misty dew-drenched pasture. Bergamot leads an intense citrus blend that is invigorating while maintaining its coolness. Subtle pepper lends a crisp edge to the gentle opening, without diminishing it. The breed’s restrained ferocity is there, ready at a moment’s notice to break free and run, but remains calm, continuing a vigorous trot. Cantering past flowers in the field and blossoming trees, aromas of silky iris and orange blossom rise. Its pace speeds up to a gallop. Here we feel its innate power as projection increases, until it is reined in closer to the dry down becoming more gentle and relaxed.

Galloway fuses iris and orange blossom notes into an amazingly unisex floral heart. The iris is warmed by the sunny orange blossoms, taking away its cool aloofness. The blossoms are brighter thanks to the regal iris’s smooth green earthiness. After this rousing ride, the finish of golden amber and musk exudes a sweet and intriguing aura. Without working itself into a lather, Galloway returns to its pasture warmed with amber and exhilarated, trailing sensuality with a soft musk. Capturing such a regal beast, in any form, is impressive. Parfums de Marly reminds us elegantly what seems run-of-the-mill, meek and simple can rise to the rank of a champion.  Sillage: above average. Longevity: very good.

Notes: citruses, bergamot, pepper, caraway, iris, orange blossom, amber and musk.

  • I am not familiar with Parfums de Marly, so any of them would be interesting to try. I know absolutely nothing about horses of any kind, so can only say that my favorite racehorse would be one that wins when I’ve placed a bet on him/her. I live in the US.

  • Judging from the notes lists, which I am admittedly not good at, I would choose Godolphin as the scent am most likely to like. I do love horses but don’t keep up with racing. I live in the US. Thanks.

I haven’t sampled this line yet, but the two I’d most like to try are Ispazon and Safanad. As to racehorses, the story of Seabiscuit is a great one but I don’t follow racing either. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • The fragrance I would most want to try is Herod since I am not familiar with the line or any of their fragrances. Galloway sounds nice as well. I’m in the US.

  • I have not tried any Parfums De Marly yes but I would like to try Godolphin. I am in the US. Thank you for the chance!

  • I tried few Marly fragrances and Herod is my favorite one.
But there are many others I should try.
    I live in US.

  • This would be a brand new line for me so the sample set would be perfect. I read on all the scents and they really sound quite great. My favorite race horse is “I’ll be a Son of a Bitch” on American Dad. Cracks me up. In the USA.

  • I too am not familiar with this line, but Galloway sounds very interesting. My favorite race horse was one that belonged to my Uncle not well know in the bigger circles of racing his name was “Zion Sunset”. I am in the US.

  • I haven’t sampled this house yet but I’ve heard a lot about Herod so that’s the one I’d like to try first. I’m not familiar with horse-racing but I read the book and saw the movie about Seabiscuit and it was quite inspiring. I am in the U.S. Thank you!

  • My most desired Parfums de Marly fragrance is Safanad. I’m in the US. Thanks for the chance!

  • I haven’t tried any of them before and I would love to try Herod! I live in the US.

  • I actually haven’t tried anything from Parfums de Marly, but I have been wanting to try them for quite a while. Especially Safanad sounds appealing to me. I live in the EU.

Thanks for this wonderful draw (just love those sampler sets).

  • Since the first time I’ve heard about Herod and its tobacco-insence-tobacco vibe, I really want to try it. The fruity leather of Godolphin and the fresh almondy vanilla of Pegasus, as well.
I am in the EU, thank you for the draw!

  • This sounds lovely. I haven’t tried any of the Parfuma de Marly scents, but I think if I were forced to pick a favorite racehorse, it would have to be Kelso.

  • I have yet to try anything from the line, but have read only positive comments. That said, being from upstate New York, I’ll go with Funny Cide as favorite horse as it has local connections and won both The Preakness and Kentucky Derby in 2003.

I have not tried any of these perfumes and I have no idea which one would love to wear but if I was to say …. Pegasus would be the one because of its name since Pegasus was a winged horse in ancient Greek mythology 🙂 son of Poseidon and Medusa.
Thank you for this lovely review and the information provided to us. I live in EU.

  • I’m not familiar with Parfums de Marly but I LOVE the concept; fragrances & horses! Having read the descriptions of their perfumes, I’m really interested in Pegasus and Herod.
I love watching horse racing; the way those beautiful horses run is just mesmerizing… I have a few favourite horses but I have a soft spot for Tidal Bay. I must say, I didn’t expect to talk about racehorses here 😀
I live in the EU. It would be great to try these scents 🙂

  • I would love to test Godolphin as I find it quite interesting. Unfortunately, the other ones are also unknown to me. Thanks!

  • I haven’t tried this line yet, but am intrigued by Pegasus (my grandmother was a professor of English literature, and when I was a young boy, she would give me books on Greek mythology to read). I reside in the US.

  • I din’t try any of them, but I am excited to smell them. I was fascinated by horses since my childhood, and they still are my favorite animals.
I would choose Frankel (born on 11 feb 2008 – GB), but I love them all.
I hope to have good luck…

Like many others, I haven’t tried the line, either, but am curious about Ispazon. My favorite race horse would have to be Man O’ War, immortalized in fiction by Walter Farley, but in fact a great champion in the years just after WWI. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • Wow! Pegasus, Lippizan, and Galloway sound amazing. They all sound great! Have not had the good fortune to try them, but I’d love to. I’m in the US. Thank you!

I have not tried this line before, but I’m very intrigued by Galloway…any fragrance that can bring together bergamot, pepper, and iris has my attention. I live in the US; thank you for the lovely draw!

Galloway sounds pretty great – I am not familiar with this line so this would be a real treat!
I’m saying Chateaugay because I won $300 on his Derby Day!
