New Niche Perfume Review: Imaginary Authors Cape Heartache – A Forest and a Lost Love + Heartbroken Bottle Draw

The Imaginary Authors collection by perfumer Josh Meyers is conceptually one of my favorite perfume lines. Each perfume is the title of a book, written by an author who does not actually exist. Now, one of the original “authors”, Philip Sava, whose “Memoirs of a Trespasser” is one of my favorites, has penned a new book, called “Cape Heartache”. It is about the search for lost love among the piney forests of the Pacific Northwest. The author says, “If you are looking for the pieces of a broken heart, you might try rifling through the twigs and needles on the forest floor.”

The perfume creates an atmosphere of an old growth forest, carpeted with a deep mulch of dropped fir needles and pinecones. Your footfalls are cushioned, each crunch sending up a puff of dry fragrance. Squirrels and birds chatter as they forage and nest, and a light breeze rustles the branches high above. The air is warm and sweet, as is this perfume. On the day I wore it, I encountered several temperature fluctuations, and the perfume morphed with the weather. It bloomed in the warmth of my car, its softer notes taking center stage, while the resinous pine asserted itself in the cooler air. I had moments of minor melancholy, but wasn’t sure if it was the marketing or an actual effect of the fragrance. The perfume stayed with me all day, drying down to a soft skin scent.

Heartache and Poetry XXI by Jaime Zatloukal Best

I am seeing a trend toward using evergreen and coniferous notes in perfume in the last couple of years. The perfumes tend to be more experiential than easy, dredging up memory and sensation. Although that happened a bit with Cape Heartache, it was much easier to live with due to the warmer, sweeter notes. I enjoyed wearing it, and it’s definitely worth exploring if you are attracted to the scents of the Northwest and the forest.

Notes include douglas fir, pine resin, western hemlock, vanilla leaf, strawberry, old growth, and mountain fog.

I received my sample from Josh Meyer of Imaginary Authors. Cape Heartache is currently available through Olfactif and will be on the Imaginary Authors website soon.

I would love to try Cape Heartache. I live in the Desert & am drawn to the northwest. I love the design & packaging. I would love to have a Forrest fragrance for winter!

  • Three things have peaked my interest: creating a back story for a perfume, the notes, and Tama. These notes will do well with this cold weather and they come in a beautiful bottle. I am in the US.

  • What an amazing sounding scent! It really evokes such a perfect image. I would love to try this (and will even if I don’t win!)
I live in the US. 🙂

  • I am absolutely crazy for evergreen and coniferous notes right now, so this madly appeals to me. I am ever drawn to the sweet-smelling scent of the forest air…. There is a road near my mom’s house that I run whenever I visit her, the scent of the coniferous trees lining this street is hypnotic to me. I’d love the chance, thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the U.S.

  • I was lucky enough to get a sample of this and it is indeed amazing! Love the pine resin vanilla combo. Pure perfection for autumn/winter!!

  • These notes sound so perfect for the winter, especially the pine! I’m looking for a nice Christmas scent, so I’d love this one. Indeed, I am in the US.

  • This scent and the concept behind it evokes the fairy tales I read as a girl. Hansel and Gretl, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel– all had a foresty darkness and mystery. I’d love a fragrance that took me to those magic places! I’m in the US. Thank you for the draw.

  • I love a good evergreen perfume, and I can’t wait to try this. I live in the US. Thanks as ever for the draw!

The back story reminds me a bit of the vibe of Snow Falling on Cedars, an actual novel about heartbreak in the woodsy Northwest. I loved that book when I read it many years ago! I enjoy the warm/cool alternate sensations you describe, and certainly anything a la forest. I’m in the US.

  • Old growth and mountain fog- sounds like a dream. I love the new trend of evergreen and coniferous notes. Walking through the redwoods is one of my favorite scent experiences.
    I live in the US.
    Thanks!

  • Chris Schaefer says:

Fascinating concept. I live in Northern CA in the forest, although we are a lot drier than what is commonly called the northwest as in Washington and Oregon. Those climes have such a sensual aspect to the fragrances of their forests. I would love to try this! I am in the US.

  • I received a sample of this one, loved it.. It’s not something I would normally be drawn to even though I love the conifers. Something in the blending of this one is very grounding and comforting at the same time. Thanks for the draw would love.

  • I lived in the Pacific Northwest for several years and still remember well the wonderful smells associated with the forests there. I actually got to try this through Olfactif last month and was really impressed by it. Thank you for sharing this with us! I am in the U.S.

  • I spent a few years living in Colorado as a child and still remember the mystery of forests and the enchanting smell associated with them. I would love to have a chance to wear this and feel like a winter pixie for a day. I live in the US. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • This appeals to me because it’s from the Imaginary Authors line. I love everything about this line, from the fragrance, to the “books”, the packaging and the hottie perfumer. 🙂

    I live in the U.S.

  • I enjoy seeing evergreen appear in a few new fragrance releases. This one appeals to me most. I visit the pacific NW regularly and love the smell in the air. The earthiness of the soil, the damp from the fog, and the green from the pine. It’s a lovely combo. I am in the US too! Thanks for the draw.

  • I managed to get a sample of this and WOW! I enjoy the entire line for the most part but this one in my opinion , sets itself apart from the rest.
Its has great longevity and a resinous pine scent that reminds me of the days that I called in the northern California Redwoods…absolutely awesome..Thanks!!!

  • I want to participate in this draw but unfortunately I’m in Thailand. I’m a big fan of Imaginary Authors work =(

When I read the article, how the wearer feels, the notes. All I could think is this is the opposite version of The Soft Lawn? (Which I think I have already saw the opposite of Imaginary Authors’ in Slumberhouse’s)

I can’t help but have high hope for this one.

PS. Please let me know If I could use my cousin’s US address? She can send almost anything from there to Thailand.

  • The whole concept of the Imaginary Authors is fascinating, and I’ve really enjoyed the few perfumes with evergreen notes that I’ve tried. I’m in the US.

  • I love everything about it, the smokiness, it’s mildly sweet, the old growth, pine resin, amazing stuff.

  • This smells like an amazing journey. I think it will read like a summer from my childhood here in North Midwestern USA.

  • Wendy Caudle says:

This sounds very alluring to me. I love woods, and conifers and pine are very evocative of the season. I’ve been intrigued by the Imaginary Authors line for a couple of months, yet have failed to sample anything yet, so a stroll through the forest with Josh sounds most appealing.

    I reside in the US

  • Fazal Cheema says:

there are some expected notes in it but some unexpected notes also such as strawberry..curious how this interpretation of forest turns out to be ..i m in US

  • Carla Meiners says:

I absolutely love Imaginary Authors and Josh just continues to amaze me with his originality. I would love to enter for a bottle of this wonderful stuff! Thanks!

  • David Martinez says:

For me it is about the line’s overall design and concept. From the thought provoking back stories to the interesting combination of notes. Like every good book, every bottle has a twist that keeps you coming back, spray after spray. Fir, Pine, Hemlock, “Mountain Fog”, and Strawberry? This is a must-sniff!! Central California, US.

  • Living in the US, Josh Meyers “Cape Heartache”, with its deep woods and mountain fog, sounds inviting and mysterious.

  • This sounds lovely- reading the review reminded me of an experience a bit closer to home, given that I have spent no time in the Pacific Northwest. Here in the Northeast we have coniferous forests (though the majority of the forests are predominantly deciduous) and the review brought back images of trail rides with the horses stepping on the pine needles and the sounds of the forest in your ears. I live in the US.

  • susie frankel says:

Cape Heartache, yes, I think I’ve visited there a few times….haven’t we all? Green is the color this year and the redwoods of CA have been my camp ground. Highway 128 to Mendocino…Imaginary Authors give great scent!

  • I love a great backstory. Reading is my passion but I have yet to try An Imaginary Authors scent. Have read some great reviews about them and Mr. Meyer. I live in the US.

Love the artwork in this article Ms. Blough!

  • I received a sample of this in the Olfactif “Better to Have Loved” collection, and found it to be my favorite of the three samples!! 🙂

Sucker that I am for balsamic notes evergreens and conifers of all kinds (cypress freak here!) the addition of the old growth forest floor and cool dampness of fog are amazing: smelling fertile dark and (well) woody…the addition of the wild strawberries injects a subtle behind the scenes sort of sweetness. My spray sample is going fast and I would LOVE to own a bottle of this scent!!

Incidentally, this is my first IA perfume and I am definitely going to source out the others, very soon, as I am quite impressed with this perfumer!

This appeals to me because it takes so many things I love in perfumery blends them wonderfully and harkens back to the grand forests I grew up around and playing/adventuring in!!

Great review, Tama! Generous draw, thanks to Cafleurebon and Josh Meyer

  • I’m in the US and I’m a big fan of this line! Memoirs of a Trespasser is one of my favorite perfumes and I look forward to trying another scent from the same author. Excellent review of Cape Heartache, I’m excited about the forest/pine needle/fog notes. Thanks for the draw.

  • I want to try it because it is described as a forest scent. I love that. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I live in the woods of the Pacific Northwest (US), so I would love to smell a perfume interpretation of my home. Thanks!

  • I miss all the green forestiness of the Pacific NW, where I went to university. I would love to try this. (US)

  • Josh is one of the nicest people in the biz I’ve ever met, and he has great taste in bourbon! I love Memoirs, and would feel fortunate, indeed, to try its author’s latest creation! ‘Tis the season for smelling like the deep woods of the Northwest; in fact, I think I’ll wear my stag-head Patch NYC solid perfume today!

  • It would be interesting to take the scent based journey down memory lane. I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • This sounds heavenly to me. The scent of evergreens & the forest floor is something I can’t get enough of. If I don’t win this (lol!) I might have to make a blind buy! Thanks for another wonderful draw.

  • I want to WIN&Tey Capee Heartache I’ve never smelled a forest but this reminds me of a scent I haven’t seen n ages by Kiehls I live in the US

  • I’d really like a chance to win this.

What I’m hoping to find in this perfume is a scent of the Arkansas Ozarks. I know when people think ‘forest’, the Northwest immediately comes to mind, but the mix of warmer temperatures and lakes (though not always fog) is something that the Ozarks can give that I never really get from the chilly Northwest.

    I am a US resident.

  • I’ve yet to try any of the Imaginary Authors creations but am quite intrigued by the concept. Reading some of the literature, it really does set the landscape for the perfume. There are quite a few that I want to get my nose on. And how can you beat a good resinous pine fragrance. Thanks for the draw! I am in the US.

  • I love the smell of walking through a forest. Pine needles are wonderful! This sounds interesting with the vanilla and strawberry notes. I am in the U.S.

  • anything with forest, pine, sap, resin, moss, mulch appeals to me.
    and this has it all!

and yes, i’m in the u.s.

  • I live in the U.S..
Love everything about Cape Heartache, especially the Strawberry that just whispers on me throughout the day.
This is a great comfort scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • YukonCornelius says:

Cape Heartache sounds so interesting to me for several reasons. I stumbled across the Imaginary Authors’ fragrances over the past couple days and LOVE the concept of the house itself. Fragrances always take me back to a particular moment in time. Additionally, the art and design behind the fragrances and their website is just excellent – so well done. For some reason when I read the description of this, I think of a winter in Maine where my fiance is from and it just gives me happy thoughts (since I proposed to her there last year around Christmas). THe notes sound exhiliarting and fresh (I very much enjoy green fragrances) – they also align perfectly with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The other subject that Cape Heartache reminds me of is the tv show TWIN PEAKS!! If only Dale Cooper was the character Josh Meyer chose 🙂

Yes I am in the US!

  • David Johnson says:

I’ve smelled it and love it! I love the smokiness and resinous feel to it. Such an interesting fragrance! I hope I win! 🙂

  • Carol Sasich says:

These fabulous notes are the reason I love living in the Northwest . Thank you for the lovely draw – I’d love to own and wear this fragrance .

  • I have been pleased with every one of the IM line I tried, so of course I’d like this one. 🙂 US.

  • I adore forest smells and can’t wait to light all the pine, fir and eucalypus candles around my house at Chriistmas. I think it has something to do with our evolutionary draw to nature. I always feel happier and at peace when I’m with nature. Somehow I had missed the fact that this line was based on “pretend” authors, LOL.!

  • I live in the US, and have been in search of a great coniferous scent…and coming from the same house as Cobra and Canary, I must say I am excited!

  • I love anything that smells like a forrest. The smell of pine reminds me of waking around in the woods when I was growing up. Comforting and calm. This is a great house.

    I am in the USA!

  • The “old growth, and mountain fog” notes sound very intriguing. and I love vanilla leaf and strawberry. This sounds like a very interesting and unique blend that I’d love to try!
    I live in the USA!

  • I love the smell of fir and pine, and dying to know what a fog note smells like! I live in the US, thanks for the draw

  • It’s such a challenge to create a scent that transports you to a specific place and experience. I grew up in the heavily forested Appalachian mountains; I’d love to smell an interpretation of the Pacific NW forests.

  • I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and it runs through my veins even though I’ve lived in NY for almost 20 years. Caoe Heartache sounds beautiful and just what I could use to soothe my senses when I’m missing the California trees. I’m in the US. Generous draw, thank you.

  • Because like real heartache, this perfume heartache morphs into a sweet fog over time 😉

(And yep, I’m in the US)

  • I live in the Pacific NW and everything in this scent sounds like home to me, walking in the mossy woods, with drifts of fog and cool fall air with the scents of douglas fir and pine. One of my favorite things as a child was to scour the woods for the tiny wild strawberries,They were only tiny but the strawberry taste and smell was enormous. Thanks for the draw.

  • I love in the U.S., and I enjoy the scent for the smoky undertone. Great cool weather scent that’s different from everything else.

  • Just saw this and I have to say that I have been a huge fan of Josh’s work. I first heard about his line here and after trying out his sample set, I absolutely had to have several of his creations. My favorites from his line are Cobra & Canary and Memoirs of a Trespasser. C&C is just a wonderful leather citrus while Memoirs is simply the best vanilla scent that I’ve tried.

His newest scent seems like a wonderful creation of the Pacific Northwest, while I don’t expect it to be as “woody” as say Slumberhouse’s Norne, it does intrigue me as a forest scent that brings out the inner lumberjack. Hope for much success to Josh now and in the future. Thanks for the draw.

  • I have purchased a number of Josh’s fragrances and have enjoyed them all. They are impressive in their ability to evolve as they dry down. I would love to give this to my sweet husband for Christmas.

Yes, I am in the US.
