Taire by Tama Blough

Gardenia has long been a fragrance note that has been elusive in natural perfumery. The big, bosomy flower we pin to our clothing, wear in our hair, or float in a bowl to fragrance the air around us, the gardenia jasminoidus, is almost impossible to extract a usable distillation from. Perfumers have been able to approximate the heady aroma by creating blends of other white flowers, but capturing the waxy, overblown smell of a real gardenia is a bit elusive. The only type of gardenia that has been successfully captured for perfumery is the variety also known as Tiare (gardenia taetensis). Tiare flowers have been used historically to make monoi tiare, a simple enfleurage* using coconut oil and used as part of a beauty regimen, but a purer, more intense absolute for perfume use has been a rarity. Perfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier Perfumes found a grower who painstakingly distills his tiare flowers to create an exquisite absolute, and used it to create her newest fragrance, Cuir de Gardenia.

I have a penchant for what I term “corrupt” florals. These are scents that capture the extraordinary last gasp of a fragrant bloom just before it dies, and often have a slight undercurrent of decay. I love these dark, mysterious aromas, because they send me right into the deepest parts of my imagination. I see with my mind’s eye the once-beautiful bouquet withering on the grave, the wetly green decadence of a tropical jungle, the magic-laden Southern swamplands. Cuir de Gardenia is the perfect capture of peak beauty and near-corruption.

Ms. Aftel did an unusual thing when she created this perfume: she decided to allow the gardenia to burst forth immediately, so didn’t add any of the usual, more sprightly top notes that generally open a perfume. Cuir de Gardenia puts your nose deep into the bloom the second you apply it. Heady doesn’t begin to describe it; it is more opulent, nearly narcotic. Wet and deep, this is a floral perfume for stormy days and sultry nights. The animalic, slightly sweet notes in the base add the leathery aromas, surrounding the flower in decadence.

Wearing Cuir de Gardenia is quite extraordinary. I have both versions that are available for purchase, parfum extrait and solid. Each offers a different experience, and I truly cannot decide which I prefer. The solid is one of the best I have ever tried; normally I have to scrape a chunk of wax out of the container and smear it on to even smell anything, but the concentration of perfume in this is wonderful. A little swipe of my finger on the surface and applied to skin is sufficient for several hours. The parfum has a bit more oomph up top, and seems a bit more pungent and green, whereas the solid is a bit smoother, with a more animalic feel. The differences are subtle, and both are lovely. Longevity for both is quite decent for natural pefumes.

Notes:

Middle: tiare (gardenia) absolute, jasmine grandiflorum absolute, benzyl acetate (natural isolate).
Base: castoreum, ethyl phenyl acetate (natural isolate), maltol (natural isolate).

Cuir de Gardenia is available on the Aftelier website, in 7.5 ml solid perfume ($240, shown at top of article) and 2 ml extrait mini ($55 shown above). Due to the scarce nature of the raw mateials for this perfume, it is of potentially limited availability.

I received my samples from Aftelier Perfumes.

Tama Blough, Senior Editor

Thanks to the generosity of Ms. Aftel and Aftelier Perfumes, we have a draw for any reader worldwide for a sample set that includes both solid and extrait. Leave a comment about what appeals to you about this scent, and if you have a favorite Aftelier perfume. Draw ends January 10, 2014.

Amazing. what’s not to love about gardenia and its narcotic scent self. I actually love Wild Roses for a very strange reason since I m not a rose lover in general.
    Thanks Mandy and ca fleurebon!

  • I would love to try the solid version. The extrait is an amazing blend of gardenia and leather.

  • Someotherspring says:

My fave Atelier scent is Lumiere Eau de Parfum, it’s wonderful. Thanks for the draw of what sounds to be a lovely new concoction.

  • Have heard many magical things about Cuir Gardenia and would be thrilled to try it, especially if this is one of the few fragrances that successfully captures the essence of the flower. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying any Aftelier scents yet but they sound wonderful.

  • Wild Roses is most definitely my favorite perfume and I adore the Ancient Resins hair and body oil. I would love to win the Cuir Gardenia!

  • This is the number scent I want to try. The combination of a true gardenia and lether sounds wonderful.

    I love Mandy’s Chef Essences!

  • I haven’t tried any Aftelier scents yet , but this one really interests me, because of the difficulty in replicating the gardenia scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • I haven’t tried any Aftelier scents, but I love the idea of gardenia and leather notes combined 🙂 Thanks for the draw!

  • Doreen Stelton says:

I love shizo and cepes and tuberose! She is amazing – Will this smell like Hawaii? Thanks for the draw.

  • I’ve long wanted to try a natural gardenia perfume, and one at its peak, about to loll over, sounds amazing! Thanks for the draw.

  • I have a few Afteliers on the list to try, this is number one. I love gardenia and am intrigued by the use of an absolute vs. an enfleurage.

  • Having moved to North Texas from South Florida seven years ago, I find myself missing…well not much actually. Except for the gardenias and jasmine I grew in my yard. I miss that a lot. One gardenia flower would perfume my whole office suite for days…so the gardenia part of this scent intrigues me most!

  • I really like Oud Luban and I’d love to try this new one because it is in a lot of Best of 2013 lists. Thanks!

  • I love Mandy’s scents, Fig, Wild Roses, Tango, Honey Blossom & Cacao are some of my favorites. Can’t wait to try Cuir de Gardenia.

  • Chris Schaefer says:

Oh my gosh! I totally love Mandy’s creations. I studied with Mandy and have quite a selection of her fragrances. She is truly a genius! Probably my favorites are Lumiere and Parfum Prive. I have some Tiare from Mandy and I can’t wait to work with it, but I so want to experience what Mandy has done. Thank you for the draw!

  • You had me at corrupt floral. Especially gardenia. There is nothing about this fragrance that doesn’t appeal to me! I’ve tried a number of Mandy’s scents, including Tango, Cacao and Secret Garden. They’re all beautiful.

  • I’m trying to help my sister find her perfect gardenia scent — could this be it?… Thanks for the wonderful draw.

  • I am a huge fan of Mandy’s work. She does naturals better than anyone else. Last year I fell in love with Wild Roses. This year, I would love a duo of Oud Lubin and Cuir de Gardenia in the solids.

  • I would love to experience Cuir Gardenia because I love leather fragrances and gardenias smell beautiful. The two together are probably incredible. Thank you~

  • What’s not to love about Mandy’s creations? They’re beautiful and truly unique in their own right. I love a heady narcotic white floral and to support its brilliance with leather is the best of both worlds; almost like a dream come true. Yes Cuir de Gardenia is what dreams are made of. Only a true artist, such as Mandy, can create a perfume that swoons decadence without going overboard.
My favorite Aftelier Perfume is Cepes & Tuberose, however I want to try even more of her intoxicating scents! Cuir de Gardenia is definitely going on my Must Have it Now list. This is a scent that I know I will love. Thank you Mandy and Cafluerebon for the draw and the rare opportunity to try this gorgeous and heavenly perfume extrait and solid. I’m in the US.

  • I love narcotic white flowers. It’ll be interesting to see how the leather gets folded into the floral notes. Thanks for the draw.

  • David Martinez says:

rare tiare absolute sounds very interesting, and add to that a leathery tone! would enjoy winning this as I havent tried an Aftelier yet! 🙂

  • I loved this image: “The animalic, slightly sweet notes in the base add the leathery aromas, surrounding the flower in decadence.” Really evocative writing. This sounds gorgeous.

One of my favorite Afteliers is Secret Garden.

  • Marcopietro says:

I never tried Aftelier’s scents. Cuir de Gardenia sounds luxurious, sensual and narcotic, I’d love to rejoice with it.
The decision to focus on the key element in the opening line is really interesting.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

my favorite Aftelier perfume is discontinued absinthe which i came across by accident. i am in the US

  • I have a gardenia in my home and once in awhile it blossoms and one blossom fills the room with the fleshy sweet scent. I haven’t tried any Aftelier perfumes, but I’d love to and I read her book essence and alchemy.
    I am in germany.

  • I have read so much about this perfume…it seems that everyone who tried it is completely mesmerised. I’m in the UK where her creations are not easy to find so thank you for the draw.

  • Diane Wright says:

Love gardenia but hard to find good fragrance with these notes. Best I have to date is Tuvache Jungle Gardenia and Kai. Thanks for the draw!

  • There is no doubt in my mind that I am going to love this if I ever get the chance to get it. Only thing that stops me from buying right now is my budget that is more limited than the availability of tiara absolute at the moment 🙁 So this is why I hope,no, pray that I win this sample.
I think Gardenia is the most sexually charged flower in existence and once you pair it with castoreum… well…you get it, right? If there is a god of fragrance in this world I sure hope he’s paying attention now.

  • What appeals to me about Cuir Gardenia is that it hasn’t got any top notes. The heady, wet gardenia is what the nose meets first. Of course there are other things that appeal to me – that it’s a new Aftelier creation. My favorite above Aftelier is Secret Garden, with Wild Roses and Ancient Resins running close behind! Thanks for the draw.

  • Actually it was the word narcotic that won me over. The review makes this perfume sound delicious. I only tried one Aftelier perfume before so I cannot compare, although the one I tried was wonderful. It was Secret Garden.

  • Another one drawn by the word narcotic, I love a perfume that intense, especially a floral. Ms Aftel’s talent and deft touch are bound to make this one exceptional, I’ve read raves about it. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • I am impressed that Mandy Aftel was able to find a distiller to extract the absolute of the tiare flower to create her fragrance. It sounds like quite a feat. And the fragrances simply sounds divine! I’m a huge fan of Tango, which I own and cherish. Thanks for the draw!

  • After reading Mandy’s book I would would really enjoy sampling her work. Cuir de Gardenia without any top notes certainly sounds interesting.

  • I have hear so much about this perfume and it made its way into so many Top 2013 Release lists! I have never smelled gardenia- either the flower of the interpretation of in perfume form. Would live to try it and thanks to Aftelier and Cafleurebon for the awesome draw!

  • I would love to try a perfume that includes enfleurage, A natural tiare sounds heavenly. I’ve never tried one of Mandy Aftel’s perfume, so thank you for the opportunity!

  • Gardenia is my beloved flower. What seems appealing to me about Cuir de Gardenia is its “opulent, nearly narcotic nature” as Tama Blough describes it. I love perfumes which are slightly sweet and deeply sensual and the use of leathery notes in its base add the aroma sense of decadence. This really makes it the ideal perfume made “for stormy days and sultry nights” :-).
Thank you for this draw. I live in EU.

  • I like that the full scent of the flower comes right out, just like it would in the real world! I would love love love to try this. My Aftelier faves are cepes and tuberose and haute claire. In the US.

  • I cannot wait to try this! I cannot afford it, sadly. I have samples of Cacao and Honey Blossoms and I think I love them equally, perhaps I like Cacao better..
    I am in the US.

  • wefadetogray says:

I think that Ancient Resins. not being a perfume but a body oil, is my favorite scent by Mandy Aftel. I really want to try her rendition of gardenia since it is one of my favorite flowers. In the summer, they sell little gardenia bushes in Whole Foods and just walking by them is heaven.
    Thanks!
    I am in the US.

  • Big white florals are always appealing and a tiare absolute sounds intruiging,
    I’m in the EU

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I love the idea of tiare and leather together, something I’d never think to try together but I only hear good things about this perfume! Would love to try it.

  • I adore wearing gardenia in my hair; somehow late Spring/early Summer just aren’t the same without that heavenly and decadent fragrance clinging to me. As a hula dancer, I’ve also had the opportunity to wear fresh Tiare and it is incredible! Cuir de Gardenia sounds like the closest approximation of that experience as I will get in Northern California 😉

  • This appeals to me because I am very curious to try more florals with something darker in them…I have only recently started to realize how much I like gardenia! I don’t have a favorite Aftelier…yet!

  • Oooh, an animalic gardenia sounds too good to be true. Consider me intrigued!

My favorite of Ms. Aftel’s scents is Sepia, though I’m guessing I’d love her Ancient Resins body elixir, too.

  • “Opulent”? “Nearly narcotic”? “Corrupt floral”? The painstakingly process to produce this scent? How could I not want to try this? A perfume for “stormy days and sultry nights”? – seems wonderful. I love white florals and I love gardenia, this seems like a scent that is right up my alley. Thank you for the draw.

  • What a fantastic review Tama! I love your description as a “corrupt floral” – your terrific piece really captures the heart of what I was trying to create in Cuir de Gardenia. I appreciate your deeply knowledgeable writing and love the gorgeous images – thanks so much to you & Michelyn!
    xo Mandy

  • i like the idea of the scent opening right away with the wonderful gardenia note. This sounds like a fabulous perfume!

  • I love gardenia, but an opulent, narcotic, almost corrupt one? MUST try! Thank you for the chance.

  • Gardenia is so lovely, brings back memories of being with my Grandmother, who had a plant and when it flowered each year, the blossoms were just divine. As a fellow natural perfumer, I can very much appreciate what goes into making such an exotic perfume. I can never get enough of these type of ethereal blossoms, they send me to another world that is magical. Thanks for doing the draw, fingers crossed 🙂

  • Real gardenia was all you had to say. I have an inoffensive light gardenia and am in dire need of something with a bit of decay. Thank you!

  • What doesn’t appeal about this scent? Everything about it sounds divine, but mostly I am a profound lover of gardenias, so I am anxious to try Mandy’s latest.

    ~Trish

  • I love the smell of gardenias. Reminds me of growing up. My aunt grew them. Seems like a lovely fragrance. Atelier Cologne would be my favourite from this brand.

  • Rachel Binder says:

My grandfather was Tahitian so I have long been obsessed with the tiare flower and its smell…sadly almost all gardenia is synthetic! I love Mandy Aftel’s perfumes…especially Cepes and Tuberose and Sepia!! Can not wait to smell this perfume!

  • I haven’t tried any of the Afteliers, but who can resist the call of the big white floral? Particularly the gardenia! And, bonus, I love leathers.

  • My favorite perfume is shiso and secret garden….BUT I haven’t tried all of her perfumes yet! I’ve been wanting to try this since the first rave review came out! Thank you for this drawing!

  • I’ve been pining after this perfume from the moment I first heard about it. I adore gardenia, but have never been fortunate enough to smell any perfume that could actually convey that scent without also giving me a headache. So for me, the most interesting part is the natural essence itself. And to be able to try the two formulations, each with its own profile and character would be tremendously fun.

Thank you and to Many Aftel for this generous draw!

  • I don’t usually gravitate to gardenia florals, but I’m very, very intrigued by the leather note. Yummmy…and “stormy days and sultry nights”? Yes, please! Thanks much for this draw — with Cuir de Gardenia on so many best-of-the-year lists, I’m dying to sniff! I live in the U.S…in case it matters.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love both gardenia and leather scents and would love to smell Mandy’s version, especially with this new way to get the gardenia scent. Thank you!

  • I love CUIR scents so this CUIR along with gardenia and your description of the perfume is intriguing to me. Really want to try it out. I haven’t tried anything from Aftelier yet
    Thanks US

  • Fazal Cheema says:

my favorite is Absinthe….i have checked some blogs and Cuir de Gardenia appears on many lists of 2013 top offerings..i am in the US

  • Very intriguing and unusual this combination of cuir and gardenia. Both are loud notes. I am curious how they work together.

    I live in Europe.

    Thanks!

  • These days I’ve read many reviews of Cuir de Gardenia and all of them suggest that it is “must try” perfume. Castoreum in the base sounds nicely. I loved Mandy’s Cassis.

  • Thank you for the review and draw.
What appeals to me most is that Cuir de Gardenia sounds like it captures the essence of the flower.
I love real gardenias; we had a bush when I was growing up and it would scent the patio thickly. I loved sitting there reading and feeling the sunlight, and I especially loved nicking the dying blooms which ‘would have fallen off anyway’ for my bath. It made me feel both decadent and very close to nature, which is rare–just like this scent!

Don’t think I’ve tried any Aftelier scents, only read about them as the epitome of naturals. In the coming year I’d like to broaden my horizons! Cepes & Tuberose is the one I am most curious about from the line, it sounds so unique.

  • I haven’t tried any Afteliers. But this one sounds so, so, so good. I love gardenia in perfumery and a complex gardenia sounds wonderful. Thank you for the draw.

  • I love flowers and leather together and the implied decay that many floral absolutes have so this is a must try for me, usa.

  • I don’t think I have ever tried a gardenia perfume but I love both the scent of gardenias and the perfumes of Mandy Aftel so I would be very keen to try this. My favourite of her perfumes is Cepes and Tuberose.

  • HOW I LOVE THE SCENT OF GARDENIA!! I would be very gracious to win a sample of this beauty, Favorite perfume is Cepes & Tuberose. I live in the US.

  • I don’t believe I’ve ever smelled a gardenia perfume normally I steer clear of florals apart from rose but this has wetted my apatite.

  • I love both leather and gardenia and have never smelled both in a perfume. However, I am a huge fan of Aftelier’s Cepes and Tuberose fragrance and I love what she is doing artistically with scent. Thanks for the draw!

  • Everything about this appeals to me! I love both of the featured notes and have yet to try anything from Aftelier and have heard nothing but good things! Thank you for the draw!

  • I love the term corrupt florals…gardenia is certainly a heady fragrance….but I never find it sickening, like an overwhelming onslought of lilies can be. Gardenia reminds me of paperwhites (when fresh) you can almost taste the sweetness. I have Aftelier cepes and tuberose. a fragrance which mirrors the naughty combination of earthy/voluptuous floral , like leather and gardenia (it is just me or does this not seem to invoke a natural masculine feminine analogy)Anyway id love to try it. Natural perfumery is so difficult and such an art.

  • I keep reading raves about this perfume. Your review, Tama, has made it a must try. I love gardenia and this sounds yummy. Especially the solid. I really enjoy wearing solids, but I’ve had the same experience, that it can take a big appllication to get much scent. I’m happy to hear this is not the case with this one. I am in the US.

  • I love tiare and I love Mandy’s perfumes… I am dying to try this. I am in the US. Thank you for the draw!

  • I am intrigue by gardenia and your description of “Corrupt Floral” It sound so naughty. One of my favorite scent is Figs (everyday wear) and Cepes & Tuberose (night events).

  • Gardenia is such an elusive flower and scent – I would always buy a plant around Easter and get only a handful of extra flowers. When I read corrupt florals in regards to Gardenia, I think about how much money I waste on plants. But I do love the scent, and love what I have smelt of Mandy’s so keen to try. I live in the US.

  • I would like to try it, I love white flowers in fragrances, I love gardenia. My fav Aftelier scent is Tango. Thanks
    Lubka

  • I also am drawn to corrupt florals, and this one sounds absolutely decadent. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I absolutely love the smell of fresh gardenias. Always brings a smile to my face! Thanks for the draw.

    I’m in Canada.
