New Fragrance Review: The Different Company Adjatay “Cuir Narcotique” (Esxence 2016) + An Affair to Remember Draw

Luc Gabriel and Alexandra Monet

The Different Company is one of my favorite perfume houses for a multitude of reasons, and of course the high quality and uniqueness of their fragrances is a big part of that. They are forever upping the fragrance game; each new nose has given perfumery a multitude of classics. One gets the very strong impression that The Different Company create their perfumes from true inspiration, not because someone in Accounting has given them a quota to fill.  Adjatay, cuir narcotique, inspired by tuberose held captive in leather but never tamed, is their newest release, and is a quintessential TDC fragrance; a sui generis perfume, made with the highest quality materials, and sublimely beautiful. Adjatay was born in the stubborn warmth of a tuberose that lay forgotten in TDC  Creative Director Luc Gabriel’s leather travel bag. M. Gabriel was impressed not only by the resilience of the flower, but also by the way it resurrected the animalic, leathery notes of the bag, and with that, another instant classic from TDC was created.

And what do you get when you pair tuberose, a flower so potent that the Victorians believed it caused spontaneous orgasm, with an incredibly warm, animalic leather accord? You get a wild, sexy, shape-shifting beast of a fragrance, with an all but fetishized yin and yang effect, as the masculine and feminine aspects of Adjatay play out on skin. Don’t say I didn’t warn you… Adjatay opens with a quick burst of mandarin that stays just long enough to remind me how well TDC does citrus. Ylang ylang teases in the beginning, as well, hinting at the sensuality to come. Tuberose, as is her wont, tries to steal the show right from the start, but restraints of sensual leather keep her at a low boil for the time being.

Perfumer Alexandra Monet has built an especially sensual leather accord for Adjatay. Castoreum and styrax lend incredible depth and warmth to the accord, giving the impression of leather that’s been warmed by skin. This isn’t birch-tar leather; it’s the inside of your boyfriend’s motorcycle jacket after he’s been riding a few hours.  In other words, completely addictive and you will absolutely understand why “cuir narcotique” was included in the name.

The leather eventually releases the tuberose and she explodes out of her restraints. For a moment, her unbridled sensuality overwhelms everything else, and one remembers why many cultures warned unmarried women not to go out walking while it was in bloom.  Mme. Monet’s tuberose is creamy, fruity and hedonistic; the floral aspects are dominant, and it has the ladybits facet as well.  Yea, I went there. This fragrance is sexy as hell.

It’s also one helluva ride; it never smells the same way twice. Heck, it never smells the same way for ten minutes.  It’s a fragrant contest of wills; sometimes leather takes control, and sometimes tuberose completely dominates. There are times that the ylang ylang lingers well past the opening scene and times when the musk and sandalwood base show up early, adding almost obscene amounts of sensuality to the mix.  Regardless of which iteration turns up, your pleasure is guaranteed.

A few months ago, a dear friend sent me sample of The Different Company's I Miss Violet, and I couldn’t resist comparing two gorgeous leather fragrances, from two perfumers, of the same house. I Miss Violet represents a young woman traveling the world, while nurturing the fragile emotions of a secret love.

Adjatay, Cuir narcotique is the passionate affair of a couple who can’t stay away from each other. She wears black leather corsets under her Chanel suits and carries a pair of fur-lined handcuffs in the zippered pocket of her Birkin bag. He cultivates poisonous night-blooming flowers in his spare time and keeps a riding crop in the glove box of his Ferrari 458 Italia. Neither has a safe word.  Neither gets the upper hand. “They are vibrating and matching each other, creating a vigorous addiction”

NOTES: Mandarin, ylang ylang, tuberose, jasmine, heliotrope, leather, Tonka bean, musk, sandalwood, Castoreum, styrax,

Writer’s and Editor’s Note: Some fragrances provoke fantasies. Lenny Kravitz  rocks both our worlds. Both Tammy and I would wear Adjatay to one of his concerts,(we missed  the one in Stockholm, darn it)  become groupies and hopefully he would be so smitten with us that  he would have another  jean zipper malfunction.

Luc Gabriel presented Adjatay to Michelyn at Esxence in Milan this past March. Just when Michelyn declared it a tuberose scent, the sexy bad boy in the leather jacket pulled up on his Harley and revved up the engine, and so it went throughout the life (eight hours) of Adjatay. One of Michelyn’s top 25 fragrances so far this year. -Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

Hands down one of the best reviews I’ve read in ages. And I seriously now need to sniff this. Thanks Tammy. And fabulous photos as always Michelyn. Lenny is perfect. And the stunning Lisa Bonet who grew up before our eyes. Celebrity couple? Surely David Bowie and Iman. I haven’t sniffed a lot of TDC, but I did like Osmanthus. I’m in Australia.

  • Leather, Handcuffs, poisonous night blooming flowers…oh heck yeah, bring it on. This is a naughty review that makes me drool wanting to try this naughty fragrance. Leather and tuberose fighting for the lead on and off. I could see Ice-T and Coco pulling this off. And then again how about Jim and I, we may not be celebrities but we smell great!!! I am in the US. Thank you for the draw 🙂

  • Holy Moly. I think I got a little Verklempt reading this review, this sounds like a wild ride!
I could picture Brad & Angelina wearing this scent. Have not smelled any TDC scents but would definitely love to.
Thanks for the draw, I am in the U.S.

  • fazalcheema says:

It is leather and tuberose, quite a new combination. I have had a mixed relationship with tuberose, with some blowing me away while others becoming overbearing. I have many from the TDC line including I Miss Violet though my favorite remains Oud Shamash. Looking forward to this and hopefully it turns out to be an impressive leather creation. I am in the US.

  • MikasMinion says:

Great review. I wasn’t particularly interested in this one before reading this, but now I just have to try it. For some reason, only the tuberose had registered with me. Ylang and enough leather to clobber a big tuberose has made me reconsider.
I’m not up on celebrity couples but would have to agree that Bowie and Iman were the first that came to mind. My favorite TDC is Sel de Vetiver and I’m in the US.

  • Mmm. Tuberose, love it, and mixed with soft comforting leather. I especially like the part where the notes constantly shift in prominence. My favorite TDC perfume is Sel de Vetiver. I think David and Victoria Beckham would be a good front for the scent.

    I live in Singapore.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Lellabelle says:

Great review, Tammy. I think I need a cool shower… and a bottle of Adjatay!

Some of my favourite notes in here: tuberose, Jasmine, castoreum, sandalwood, heliotrope and ylang. Narcotique, indeed :). The celebrity couple that comes to mind is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Fitting, somehow.

I would love to win this. My favourite DC perfume is Jasmine de Nuit. Thank you Luc and Sophie for the generous draw! Canada, please.

  • ron payne says:

It just sounds so decadent and dark. Perfect couple to wear it? Beckham and Beckham.

  • Iphigenia says:

Amazing review dear Tammy you could write the scenario of a next Hollywood movie you know, so many vivid descriptions, action mixed with passion, wow I felt hot flashes while reading it!!!
I really felt passionately in love with ‘Cuir Narcotique’ creation from TDC, since I very much like leather and tuberose notes imagine those two dynamites blending together!!!
The celebrities that would definitely wear Cuir Narcotique are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, wearing this while on the set of the motion picture Mr.& Mrs. Smith, both too hot to resist each other ❤
I would love to win this perfume!!!
Unfortunately up till today I have not experienced any TDC perfume so as to have a favorite one .
Thank you both TDC House and Cafleurebon for the generous draw!
I am a registered reader living in EU.

  • Tammy, this was an awesome review and I must sniff it and confess all of my sins after sniffing! Michelyn, the accompanying photos were pure perfection for this one. I’m all in on this one with several back up bottles. Here are my celebrity couples:

    Beyonce & Jay Z
    Brad & Angelina
    Angelina & Billy Bob Thornton
    Halle Berry & Olivier Martinez
    Pam Anderson & Tommy Lee
    Carmen Electra & Dave Navarro
Boris Kodjoe & Nicole Ari Parker
    Lisa Bonet & Jason Momoa
    Rihanna & Drake

I live in the US and thanks for the draw!! Fingers and toes crossed for this one! 🙂

  • Adjatay sounds like one crazy perfume – sensual, sexy, passionate, and constantly changing how it smells. I do like crazy though. I am having a hard time imaging how a tuberose leather smells, but I had the same problem with I Miss Violet and it is still my favorite TDC perfume. USA.

I could imagine Bowie and Iman, especially in early days, going on a tropical vacation and Iman wearing this perfume.

  • This is the kind of review that makes me want so badly this naughty sexy fragrance. Leather and tuberose? Here I am!

Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee would fit perfectly Adjatay. 😉

My fav TDC is Sel de Vetiver.

I’m in the EU (France). Thanks for the draw!

The release of a new TdC scent is always a good news. I totally endorse your words: “The Different Company is one of my favorite perfume houses for a multitude of reasons” I love tyheir gracefully, measure and class.
To read your review of this new scent built around leather and tuberose notes is an tanticipation of the pleasure that I will try to wear it.
It made me think of the electrical excitation of the seductive game that precedes sex, where the allusion is more powerful than the explicit.
A testimonial couple could be Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel.
My favourite TdC is Sel de Vetiver.
    I live in EU.

  • This review made me a little warm, frankly. The mention of how it changes with each wear is intriguing, too. I’m blanking on celebrity couples–how about Cleopatra and Mark Anthony? The only perfume I’ve tried from The Different Company is Sel de Vetiver, after reading an irresistible review here. I’m in the US.

  • Gregorysop says:

This was an excellent review that totally piqued my interest. The animalistic description of the tuberose and its interaction with leather was very powerful. It sounds exactly like the fragrance I need to help jumpstart our romance in the post baby era… IDK why, probably bc my wife makes me watch it with her, but Donnie Walberg and Jenny Maccarthy.
    I am from USA
    Thanks for the draw.
    Greg

  • How lovely review! I have very enjoyed to read it. I could imagine that Brad and Angelina wearing this fragrance. I have never tried any of The Different Company fragrances, unfortunately. But I suppose that this perfume in very good. I would very like to try that. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • misty_father says:

Great review, this fragrance sounded wild and dangerous, so I guess the celebrety couple who would wear this would be Bonny & Clyde.(The leather in it would match their leather bike jackets).

Haven’t sniffed a lot of TDC but I enjoyed Sel de Vetiver.

    Europe here.

  • Nice review! I love the way Tammy discribe Adjatay like “wild and sexy”, ” it never smells the same way for ten minutes”… sounds very intriguing.
I could imagine Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt wearing this perfume.
I live in EU and never tried The Different Company perfumes.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I love tuberose, and now that I think about it, leather seems a great companion. I would like to see how the Different Company handles these two notes. It sounds from Tammy’s description like it is a wild ride! This review also made me want to seek out Miss Violet; violet and leather sound great together too! I don’t believe I’ve tried a Different Company perfume yet, which is strange, because they’ ve been around forever. I live in the USA. Thank you for the draw.

  • Wow, what a compelling review. I had a love affair with tuberose, but it has waned. It seems like leather might be a really complimentary note to the tuberose though, and my interest is piqued. I love the idea of tuberose, ylang-ylang and leather all fighting for their spots and changing the fragrance so often. I’ve only tried Tokyo Bloom from TDC, but I really really enjoyed it. I clearly need to try more from this house! As for celebrity couples – I’m afraid I’m terribly uninformed! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

    What a sexy review……..Thumbs up.
Tuberose is my favorite floral note.
” The leather eventually releases the tuberose and she explodes out of her restraints. It’s a fragrant contest of wills; sometimes leather takes control, and sometimes tuberose completely dominates. Adjatay, Cuir narcotique is the passionate affair of a couple who can’t stay away from each other,” Tammy’s impressive statements.
Tom Cruise & Nikole Kidman is the best couple I can imagine for wearing this fragrance, IMO.
I live in Peshawar, Pakistan. My favorite perfume from TDC: Le 15 and After Midnight.

  • I agree with the commentor who wrote this is one of the best reviews of a fragrance I read all year
I love the idea of neither ingredient taking dominance and that the fragrance changes and doesn’t stay the same
I just love the sexy take and yes to Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet as the perfect couple. Beyoncé and jay z also come to mind also Onassis and Maria callas
My favorite TDC are une nuit magnetique and osmanthus
    I live in the US

  • I want it NOW!!! I love Tuberose and its raw and sexual facets. Couple an animal with its fur and you get a ravishing beast. I absolutely agree with marcopietro that Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel could face this fragrance. I am super excited with this release. I would love to win a bottle. I live in the EU

  • Not naughty just blunt and to the point. It doesn’t seem to be about taming the heady tuberose just straping it for a bit which allows its narcotic nature to become more fierce balanced by the leather straps and the heat rising.
This sounds oh so perfect for John Legend and Chrissy…. Great review Tammy!
I am in the US and would love to see how my guy responds to this scent 🙂
    Thanks for the opportunity

  • rodelinda says:

This review has seriously excited me to try Adjatay. I like fragrances with yin and yang, male and female, subtlety and provocation. Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz were so gorgeous together, but I might slightly prefer the pairing of Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa. I’m in the US, and my favorite TDC fragrance is Jasmin de Nuit. Thanks!

  • Rodney Q. Wallace says:

This statement stuck with me, “It’s a fragrant contest of wills.” I thought of unbridled passion when I first read that. I’m beyond intrigued to try this fragrance. Talk about a steam bath of a review! Incredible. I could imagine Will & Jada Smith wearing this. A power couple that still exudes a deep, passionate affection for each other. TDC Adjatay, you have my attention. Tremendous review, Tammy! I’m live in the US. Thanks so much for the draw.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Amazing review! Loved the comparison with “I Miss Violet” and all of the evocative and sensual imagery. I feel as if I have a great sense for the “feel” of the fragrance. As for an appropriately sensual couple…Billy Bob and Angelina were a little freaky when then were together…I could imagine them rocking this. I’m in the US and I love lots of stuff from TDC, namely Bois D’Iris and Rose Poivree. Thanks for the draw!

  • After reading this review I had to sit on a block of ice! I must experience this beauty. Funny, I was just reading about TDC’s De Bachmakov Eau De Perfume this morning. Now I can imaging Adjatay being a favorite of mine. The celebrity couple I picture is the Purple One and wife number two, Mayte Jannell Garcia. TDC Adjatay would radiate from their very pours!

  • Mistermac says:

  • ntabassum92 says:

That was one sexy review! I loved how passionate the writing was, and how Tammy described the masculine and feminine aspects of the fragrance as if they were two separate people. What celebrity couple? Hmm… I confess I can’t think of one. But if Irene Adler from the BBC’s Sherlock Holmes was in a relationship with a motorcycle riding bad boy, then I think they would share this perfume. I’m in VA, U.S.A., and I have never tried a fragrance from this company!

  • Wow, that review definitely changed my mind about wanting to try this one. I loved the pairing of the floral leather with the sexy images and imagery! This would be a great perfume for a couple in Victorian literature–you know, a couple of repressed, tight-laced lovers, like Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. The only TDC I’ve tried so far is Kashan Rose, which is lovely 🙂 Thanks for the draw! I’m in the EU.

  • Very nice description of the fragrance, Tammy. I love the fact that it never smells the same way twice-so unusual!
My favorite The Different Company perfume is I miss Violet.
I could imagine Heidi Klum and Seal wearing Adjatay.
Thank you for the review and draw! USA

  • I liked the sexy description of this fragrance. I can imagine Eva Mendez and Ryan Gosling wearing this fragrance on a night out in Paris.
My favorite TDC is Sel de Vetiver. I’m in the US.

  • If Tammy says this, “This fragrance is sexy as hell”, that’s good enough for me. Sign me up. My favorite TDC creation is South Bay. Who can I imagine wearing this, Charlize Theron and anyone she is with but not Sean Penn. USA

  • Whoa….this fragrance seems exciting, and maybe even a bit overwhelming? Tammy has a way with descriptives, as we know, and based on what she said I would imagine Olivier Zahm wearing it. Great review! I’m so curious to try it…tuberose and leather? Sexy? Yasss lord. USA

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Tammy, this is a wonderful Review. Thnaks a lot! my favourite scent of TDC is Sublime Balkiss: What couple I can imagne wearing this? Keanu Reaves has to be part of it ;-))

Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Lissette78 says:

Amazing review! I really want to win Adjatay. I’m wearing today Kashan Rose from The Different Company perfume brand that I love.
I’m going with Mendes and Ryan Gosling too.
    Texas, USA

  • Laurentiu says:

I am ashamed to say that I know not a single creation from this house. I love the tuberose flower. Add there some leather and throw in some sandalwood and I am already at a loss for words. For me these three notes would be more than enough, but there are more! Ylang-ylang, styrax, musk, jasmine, heliotrope… sounds perfect! The name! I also like the name! Very poetic and very oriental.

I live in EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I can definitely imagine Jay Z and Beyonce wearing this scent. Sounds very rockstar-ish. I think I’d really like it. My favorite scent from this house at the moment is Oriental Lounge. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw!

  • Immediately after reading this I could imagine no other couple than Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund. Tuberose, leather accords and ylang-ylang sound very classic and timeless. I love the house and have many favorite TDC scents: Ailleurs et Fleurs, Rose Poivree, Osmanthus, Charmes et Feuilles, Sienne d’Orange. I live in the EU.

  • Diana Devlin says:

Even though they’re not a couple anymore, I could see Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee being the face of this fragrance.
This is a gorgeous scent. Love leather notes!
    I live in the U.S.

  • Must quite an amazing perfume! Tuberose and leather sounds quite amazing! I can picture Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux rocking this! I live in the UK

  • echinacea says:

The description is very sexy and narcotic indeed! Leather is one of my most beloved notes in perfume, I’m dying to try this scent. I could imagine Bowie and Iman wearing this. I live in the EU.

  • Miss Almond says:

I’ve always associated leathery fragrances with power, so my type are Claire and Frank Underwood 🙂
I love the review and pictures.
My favorite scent from this house is Oud Shamash. I’m in the EU.

  • teresa310 says:

Wow! The scent is perhaps even too sexy to my taste, too intense… Or am I wrong? Very interesting rewiev!
    I love Sublime Balkiss.
    (EU)

  • This sounds incredibly sensual. I love the way Tammy describes the interplay between the notes. I can almost smell it! I can imagine David Bowie (RIP) and Iman wearing this — one of my favourite celebrity couples. I could picture them just wearing it around their undoubtedly stylish home, gazing at each other in rapture. I’ve never tried a fragrance fromThe Different Company, but they sound like a stellar house. I live in Canada, thank you.

  • Sounds like a very very nice fragrance. I can imagine Will and Jada Smith wearing this scent. I unfortunately haven’t tried a scent from this house but I will very soon.

I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw
