New Fragrance Review: Tauer Perfumes L’Eau  (Andy Tauer) 2017+Tauer’s Take on Cologne Draw

Ever since 2014, when Andy Tauer released Cologne de Magrheb, I have been patiently waiting for a new riff on the time honored classic. I was thrilled and delighted to learn of his new release L’Eau (truth to be told I was actually quivering with anticipation when I opened the box).

 I often feel that classic colognes get a bit shortchanged in the fragrance community in favor of darker and deeper scents rife with incense, patchouli, and the ever ubiquitous oudh. Colognes seem to be thought of as “lesser" compositions, almost like a poor relation, something not to be taken too seriously, but just for "fun".

For me nothing could be further from the truth. In the hands of a master perfumer like Andy Tauer, a bright and fizzy Eau De Cologne-style perfume done extremely well, can lift my mood and vanquish the dark clouds on any gloomy day, and make a sunny day that much better. Think of all the wonderful colognes from the bigger houses, Chanel, Guerlain, Dior, or Caron for example. The bite of the citrus, the uplifting florals, and the fresh air supplied from a great clean musk? Yes please! I love them all. Andy Tauer's L'Eau takes the very best aspects of fine cologne and interprets them as an Eau de Parfum in a classic Tauer way, with his signature deep and well rounded "Tauerade" vibe and over-the-top longevity. Andy Tauer is a perfumer who is never afraid to push the envelope, he has a signature style and Tauer Perfumes offers the rare combination of outstanding scents at reasonable prices.

Inspired by the scent of a blooming lemon tree on Mr. Tauers’ Zurich veranda, L'Eau is a beautiful and uplifting unisex perfume that manages to deconstruct a lemon tree from its dew-kissed blossoms down to its cool and dark hidden roots. It also happens to be one of the greatest blind buys I've made in a very long time.

Opening with the sharp and slightly bitter whip-crack sting of fresh lemon and bergamot and softened by the sweet floral notes of lemon blossom and the slight fusty scent of iris, this fresh-as-springtime scent is as cooling and mellow as a warm zephyr whispering against your skin and ruffling your hair. The wood notes bring you into the stems and stalks of the lemon tree, right into the trunk and further down into the loamy soil with its' ambergris/earthy, primordial and slightly metallic smell. This is a bottle I would, and will reach for at the end of a sunny day-off spent lying in the sun, then meandering through the house in a languorous stupor from the heat of the day, and looking forward to a cooling, cleansing, and refreshing shower. Fresh out of the bath, in sparkling clean clothes slightly redolent of laundry powder and sunlight, I will give myself some generous lashings of L'Eau with its' bright and revivifying sweet citrus blast, and step out into a warm summers' night. On second thought, why wait? I think I'll just go re-apply right now. Notes: Bergamot, lemon, orange oil, lemon blossom, iris, musk, woods, ambergris

    Hmm, not Andy’s strong suit, though we did get a bottle of the Cologne du Maghreb. Still, he’s always worth atry.

    I’m a fan of EdC as well as Mr. Tauer. I can’t wait to see his take on a traditional EdC. His work last for hours and hours and transforms beautifully. My favorite is L’air du Desert Morocain which is breathtaking.

    I love Eau de Lancome and Shali EDC in the summer. This sounds gorgeous! I have only smelled Andy’s LDDM, which is so warm and dry.

    A blast of citrus cologne? Yes, please! The idea of a deconstructed lemon tree is not one yet that I have heard of, but I have loved with deconstructed fig fragrance. The only Tauer scent I have experienced to date is “When We Cuddle”… which is phenomenal but unfortunately not commercially available. I would very much like to try this new offering. I live in the USA.

    I already love a handful of Tauer fragrances and I have a soft spot for citrus colognes, so this sounds like something I need in my life. (In fact, I’ve been debating a blind buy for a couple of days now.) Imagining that Tauer base under some lemony goodness…YES PLEASE! I’m in the US, and my favorite Tauer (and one my favorite fragrances in general) is Au Coeur du Desert. Thanks for the drawing.

    I like those colognes that we splash on after a refreshing shower on a hot day. This Tauer cologne sounds perfect to travel with, to receive a restorative citrus burst after longs days on the move.
    My favorite Tauer fragrance is Lonestar Memories.

    “The whip-crack sting of lemon…” is what spoke to me the most and is the perfect way to describe how a cool bracing cologne leaves the atomizer and hits the skin. Robert really has a way with words!

    Many of Andy’s earlier works (Numbered series) are phenomenal (LDDM, Orange Star & Reverie au Jardin, for examples) but my favorite is a tie/blend I use equal parts of Un Rose Chypree and Lonestar Memories I call “Eau de Brokeback Mountain”! 😉 Andy loved this when I shared it on Facebook!

    All of Tauer’s creations are scintillating. There are still some I need to try, and now L’Eau tops that list!
    LADDM and Dark Passage are my favorites, with Incense Extreme and Zeta leading during the hotter months.

    L’eau sounds great because during heat and humidity I love refreshing scents but often they are too white musk/marine and/or fleeting. The thought of a scent with serious lasting power and woods and earth that is also cool and gentle and lemon-lemon blossom centered makes my nose tingle! Thanks for the review and draw

    I do agree with Robert that colognes seem to have been shoved into a corner. Just the idea of a fragrance to lift a mood and “vanquish the clouds” is worth a sniff. I have a bottle of Lonesome Rider.

    My favorite Tauer perfumes so far are Phi Une Rose

    Id like to eventually like to try more from Tauer such as Lone Star Memories and the new limited and sought after Attar oil to name a few.

    I have many Andy Tauer favorites….Reverie au Jardin, LDDM, Lone Star Memories, Lonesome Rider, Une Rose Chypre. I recently received the new attar and love it too. Thanks for the draw!

    I think that Robert portrays Andy’s genius very well. I have heard nothing but good comments about all Tauer perfumes, but have never had the privilege to try one myself. I would love to receive a sample.

    I love summer colognes! Good ones that are so refreshing, they just make you think of taking a shower, putting on clean crisp cotton clothing and generously laying on the fresh lemony type scent. I like the description of the situation Robert would wear this, because that’s exactly when I would wear it. One of my favorite colognes is Eau de Minimes – wonderfully joyful fragrance.

    The portrayal in the review of aspects of bright citrus lemon and bergamot paired w Iris and then this whole notion of a sort of deconstructed lemon tree makes it sound like the ultimate luxurious summer scent!

    wonderful review – but this is what gets my attention:
    Opening with the sharp and slightly bitter whip-crack sting of fresh lemon and bergamot – this just sounds so refreshing and then it develops and turns lovely….I have a few of Tauer’s creations, just recently got the “L’eau” which is really remarkable. I find Andy Tauer to be a wonderful creator and definitely thinks outside the box. I’d love to give this new offering a try. thank you for the opportunity. I’m registered and in the US.
