New Fragrance Review: Providence Perfume Company Ivy Tower Perfume Oil by Charna Ethier + Maneater Draw

charna

Charner Ethier of Providence Perfume Co

Artisan perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co has released a collection of six cleverly named roller-ball perfume oils, concentrated blends of botanical material in fractionated coconut oil. With this collection, she has provided  the newbie an  introduction to natural perfumery, taking into account the usual preconceptions of what 'natural perfumery' is and maybe more importantly- what it is not. One of the things I discovered is that my style of perfumery is more unique than I realized… that being said, I was determined to create a line of natural perfumes that were beautiful, wearable and accessible”, Charna says. That is an understatement.

Unlike an alcohol-based perfume, these oils have a tenacious quality and the percentage of aromatic materials is extremely high, so sillage and longevity are above average for a botanical fragrance.  “Using an oil carrier is quite like throwing a blanket over the entire formula.” Charna Ethier states, explaining how one must readdress formulation. “More and more customers were choosing oils for their custom perfume, citing a desire for portability and longevity.”

Charna’s creative process took into account perfume trends, new technology and the feedback she receives from her brick and mortar store clientele who walk in and ask for Chanel No 5 or Dolce Gabbana Light Blue. They represent the general audience who believes that natural perfumery smells like your mother's hippie patchouli oil, or aromatherapy blends. In other words they do not consider naturals “real” perfume.  Charna explained,”One of the hurdles I faced in opening my store and only stocking my botanical fragrances is that there is no real education about how beautiful natural perfumery can be. There is an education gap between natural perfume devotees,  perfumistas who read blogs that treat natural fragrance just like they would any perfume, by the way it smells vs.  my  walk-in clientele. Anyone who owns a Providence Perfume Co fragrance knows better.

My favorite of the six is Ivy Tower  (although Rose 802 and Violet Beauregarde are close runners up).  Ivy Tower is not, as the name implies, a scent for Tennyson's Lady of Shallot awaiting Lancelot  to notice her. This is a perfume for an empowered sensual woman.   Remember the 1982 song  from Hall and Oates, Maneater? “She'll only come out at night … the beauty is there, but a beast is in the heart…   The opening of Ivy Tower is the “dew-laden path” suggested in the description, with a rain moistened jonquil and  geranium- leaving you unprepared for the pheromone trap of jasmine sambac, or the hypnosis of narcissus- a spell woven into the heart. The ivy here is climbing down the tower- not the ivy vines  of a prestigious university- it is the dangerous version found in the hands of a temptress with intentions of her own;   a creature of sensual carnage. Blue tansy and sandalwood prevent the scent from developing teeth, but you will be delightfully devoured  until the next morning you are left with a hint of the greenery, and a jasmine breathing encounter with a seductress. watch out boy… she'll chew you up.

Ivy Tower is a full fledged perfume, which for the safety of men and women alike, must be kept in its Ivy Tower- until down the tower it climbs to ensnare the next nose to be beguiled by this botanical “man-eater”.

  • I love the description for Ivy Tower, it makes you want to smell and have the perfume, it’s very intriguing. Also there are some unusual notes like jonquil and narcissus that I don’t find too often in a perfume.
My favourite is Sweet Jasmine Brown.
    I live in the U.K.

  • Wonderful – I always love when a song and a perfume come together. It was also fun to hear Charna’s thoughts on natural perfumery. Charna’s work is amazing and I love reading about the new line. I would love to sample her new fragrances down here in Florida.

  • Oh my, Ivy tower sounds incredible! Charna sounds like a modern day perfumer and the mix of jonquil and geranium sounds really interesting. I have never tried Providence Perfumes so would love either the single or the samples to try.
    I am in the USA.

  • Really enjoyed the quotes from Charna, and this line:” Blue tansy and sandalwood prevent the scent from developing teeth, but you will be delightfully devoured . . watch out boy… she’ll chew you up.” Great fun! Branch & Vine is my fave so far, but I’d love to try this whole series if I won (and even if I don’t). Cheers! In the US.

  • Would love to try ivy tower. Sounds intriguing and beautiful. Charna states using an oil base is like throwing a blanket over which is true for me at least. I find that my perfumes that are in an oil base last longer but stay closer to the skin like a soft warm blanket. My favorite providence perfume is Eva Luna or Cocoa Tuberose.

I love Einsof’s description of Ivy Tower; it is not what I had envisioned this perfume to smell like. When I think of the ivy note I think of a hot summer day, but this sounds like it could work on a hot summer night as well from the review! I would absolutely love to try it!
I am in the US and unfortunately have not had the pleasure of sniffing any of Charna’s fragrances. Thank you for the draw!

  • This line is riveting – The ivy here is climbing down the tower- not the ivy vines of a prestigious university- it is the dangerous version found in the hands of a temptress with intentions of her own; a creature of sensual carnage. I don’t think I even have it in me to be that woman, but it doesn’t mean I can’t try! I don’t have a favorite as I’ve never tried any, but I’ve been interested in trying Summer Yuzu. Thanks for the generous draw – I’d love the sampler. In the US.

I didn’t know Charna also has a boutique. I just checked the other page and boutique displays are awesome. Charna is right about the lack of education on natural perfumery and I must admit it has even taken me time to learn about it because it is relatively newly emerging niche sector. For this draw, my choice will be sample set..I hope I see Charna’s boutique one day. I reside in the US

  • My favorite perfume I’ve tried so far is Moss Gown, and I would love to try the sample set! I am in the US, thank you.

  • rivercitylizzy says:

Hahaha, yeah, Maneater!! Oh, man, that brings back some childhood memories–boppinʻ around in the backseat of my parentsʻ car while it blared out from the stereo, singing along at the top of my lungs though at the time I had NOT ONE CLUE what the lyrics meant!

The use of “Maneater” to describe the nature (if not the notes) of Ivy Tower is enough for me to choose that as my prize; add to that the fact that Branch & Vine, so oddly appealing and unique in my perfume wardrobe, is still my favorite Providence Perfume Co. fragrance and itʻs a no-brainer for me. Gotta go with the full size Ivy Tower 😉

I am in the US; thanks to you and Ms. Ethier for the draw!

  • Einsof has such a beautiful evocative uniqueness about him- he’s a poet right? – and grinning a lot too I muse. Connected to Chana’s review here, he not only tells us of the practicalities of her approach but them weaves temptation around us like a web until one realises that one is totally trapped , unable to escape unless miraculously Bungy jumping from the Ivy Tower..perhaps…I’d be greedy for a full size indeed. Its a generous draw Chana and a lovelycollaboration of talents in this review.

  • Wonderful review, I had enjoyed the whole article. I had always prefer the natural perfumes. My choice would be the sample set, because I would like to try all.
    I live in Europe.

  • Lovely review of Charna’s perfume oils. I love how Charna’s explains the ” education gap between natural perfumev devotees and Perfumistas”. Einsof explains Ivy Tower so beautifully. Sounds like something I would like. I would like the full bottle of Ivy Tower if I win. I don’t have a favorite since I’ve only tried one of her perfumes. I’m in the USA

  • I’d thought of Ivy Tower as an aloof beauty, but Einsof sees her as a man-eating temptress… Well, I’m sold! I’d love the full size roller ball of Ivy Tower. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw.

  • I enjoyed the description of Ivy Tower and the Maneater reference which will no doubt be an earworm that sticks with me all day! What intrigues me about these oils is what Charna said about oil throwing a blanket over the scent and the need for reformulation to address the issue – she is brilliant and I would love a sample set! Thanks to all for the review and generous opportunity, I’m in the US.

  • I liked reading about the difference between the different fragrance carriers. I’m in the US and would opt for the sample set. My favorite from Providence Perfume Co. is Cocoa Tuberose. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I wish Charna’s boutique was open before I moved away from that area, as I’m sure I would become a regular fixture! I love Cocoa Tuberose, but this Ivy Tower sounds incredible! I would love to win the full size. I live in the US.
    Oh, here she comes…

  • I agree when it is said that people thinks always about hippie patchouli when is talked about natural perfumes , and these ones can be amazing if they are well done. I don’t know any perfume from this line but looking on the website perhaps Ginger Lily would me my favourite. I would like to win the samples set to see it!
    I,m in Europe .

  • Thank you everyone!

it’s easy to wax poetic when dealing with such aromatic treasures- Charna creates such beautiful works of art.

Ivy Tower provides so much more than the innocence of Kate Bush’s ‘Under the Ivy’- more the poisonous and sensual Poison Ivy of Batman.

good luck to everyone on the very generous draw. 🙂

  • I love the lyrical rythm of Einsof’s description, she must be a musician, not only a poet…
I live in Israel and I would love to win the samples set
    thanks for making this international

  • I really enjoyed the description of the Ivy Tower scent. It really makes me curious and wanting to try it. Haven’t sampled any of her creations so keeping my fingers crossed for a chance to win a sample set. It was also interesting to read about the attitude or prejudice towards natural fragrances. I’m in Sweden.

  • Jennifer Witt says:

I loved to hear the description about natural perfumary and how it differs from other types. I would love to try the sample set to get an idea of the range – I don’t currently have a favorite from Providence Perfume Co. I live in the US, thanks.

  • I did enjoy reading the enchanted description of Ivy Tower. Living in the USA with a growing interest in Natural Perfumery, I would indeed value the sample set.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

One thing that caught my attention was that this release consists of fractionated coconut oil. not sure if all do, but this is what caught my eye. I actually re-read that opening line a couple of times. Coconut oil is a real hip trend now, and very good for you too. From a marketing perspective, I like how Charna took into account lots of different variables, including the input from those walk in customers. There is so much to learn and teach apparently with the natural perfumes, what a wonderful opportunity to listen to what people are saying and use that input. I haven’t been exposed to any of the Providence Perfume Co.’s line yet, so I’d be delighted to win. I think the Ivy Tower sounds wonderful. That would be my pick. Thank you for the draw – I’m in the US.

  • As usual I enjoyed everything about this review and I am a huge fan of Charna’s work. She is an incredibly gifted perfumer and I adore all her work! Attending one of her advanced classes in her beautiful shop is on my bucket list.
    I live in Portland, OR.
I would love to try the sample set.
    Thank you so much!

  • I liked reading the take on natural perfumery. I don;t have a favourite Providence perfume yet,
I’d like to win the sample set please, I’m in the EU ty

  • I so enjoyed this review and the way Einsof uses words to give us a knowledge of Chana;s work. He is a master of words I have to say. I would love so much to try the Ivy Tower, I’m sure it would become my favorite. Thank you for the generous draw. I am in the US

  • I love the descriptors for Ivy Tower, especially the Maneater reference! I’ve been dying to try Charna’s perfumes but haven’t yet. I would love the sampler! I’m in the US. 🙂

  • I love the music/perfume connection. I haven’t tried any of charna’s perfumes yet and so don’t have a favorite. But I’m sure the sample set would take care of that problem. I’m in the US.

  • I like oil based perfumes. The description of Ivy Tower with the story behind it is very interesting. I would like to try the sample set. I am in the EU.

  • I am also of the opinion that natural perfumery could be even more potent than the usual ethanol-diluted edt, edp or colognes. I admire Einsof attempt to convince the wider audience (though CaFleurBon’s audience knows its niche, natural, artisan and commercial fragrances pretty well) in the statement. Especially the maneater part!
I haven’t tried any of Ms. Ethier’s scents, and I am eager to get a sample set.
I live in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the great chance!

  • What I enjoyed in Einsof’s review is the description of Ivy Tower perfume a perfume “for an empowered sensual woman” and the reference point of the 1982 song from Hall and Oates, Maneater “She’ll only come out at night … the beauty is there, but a beast is in the heart…
My favorite from Providence Perfume Co is Rose 802 and I live in EU.

  • Since I’m always ready to explore both, alcohol-based and oil-based, perfumes of American artisan perfumers, I’m very interested about Providence’s collection of perfume oils. General opinion that natural perfumes, especially oils don’t have any longevity and sillage has been changed. I know some of Charna’s perfumes so I can imagine the beauty of her newest perfumes. I’m impressed with her Tabac Citron and Rose Bohème but there are many perfumes I have not tried yet. I’d love to win samples to wear them all. I’m in Croatia. Thank you.

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I enjoyed reading Einsof’s review and his impression of Ivy Tower as “ivy here is climbing down the tower- not the ivy vines of a prestigious university”. I live in the US and my favorite from Providence Perfume Co is Osmanthus Oolong EDP.

  • I love that the ivy “is the dangerous version found in the hands of a temptress with intentions of her own; a creature of sensual carnage…” That is my kind of ivy! And I would love to win Ivy Tower. I’m in the U.S. My fave thus far is Osmanthus Oolong.

  • I enjoyed that Charna uses her unique style to make perfumes that are both accessible and beautiful and truly portable I would love to try Ivy Tower it sounds empowering. I live in the US.
