New Fragrance Review: Ormonde Jayne Vanille D’Iris + Girl With A Pearl Earring Perfume Draw

Scarlett Johansson in the movie Girl With A Pearl Earring 2003

Envision a young woman with a pale complexion, her hair away from her face with  flashing black eyes. On each earlobe, a perfect pearl, seemingly incandescent, hypnotizes as you are drawn to her seemingly subtle charms. This is the image I imagine when wearing Vanille d’Iris, the latest addition to the Ormonde Jayne repertoire.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth as Johannes Vermeer in Girl With a Pearl

There can be no Oriental without vanilla and perfumer Geza Schoen in collaboration with Ormonde Jayne Creative Director Linda Pilkington creates a vanilla accord that glows and radiates like priceless pearl earring seemingly from another time. Herr Schoen works like Vermeer to scrape a Tahitian vanilla pod of its seeds and cover them in nacre layers to mold one of the most sophisticated parures in Linda Pilkington’s jewel box.

The opening of this eau de parfum is unexpectedly fresh with vegetal, almost peppery greenery teasing the nostrils and radiating the utterly chic glow of powdered iris. Slowly the floral aroma of Tahitian vanilla appears, emphasized by the milky iridescence of magnolia petals and Tahitian white pearls. The more feminine side of Vanille d’Iris takes the stage with ripe cherry-like fruitiness, made opalescent by the pulpy osmanthus and jasmine conjuring up the glowing golden skin of South sea pearls.  The finest quality iris butter seems dusted with cocoa and that’s where vanilla and iris most evidently embrace in a darker drydown empowered by a cedarwood and licorice tinged ambery base echoing the sumptuous trail of another Ormonde Jayne Iris, Orris Noir.

Vanille D’Iris never turns too sticky or warm, giving the illusion of a cool vanilla. The pearl gets as dark as vanilla pods, intense and dry, wears flawlessly on a man as well, like a black pearl cufflings on a white shirt. It is one of my favorite Ormonde Jayne’s in recent years, a masterpiece of subtlety, light and shadow.

Vanille d’Iris has incredible longevity despite its softness. Think of the way pearls smell after they have been worn next to your skin for hours, the sillage is discreet and intimate.

  • Lovely to review. I liked the detailed way in which Ermano described the vanilla as it can be a complex ingredient.

Ormonde Jayne is my favorite house. If I had to pick one fragrance I could wear Ta’if (parfum) forever.

I saw The Girl with the Pearl Earring again last year and will post a photo on my FB feed.

    I live in US.

  • During my college years, I worked at a bookstore. Not a huge chain, mind, but a large store nonetheless. One night, a couple walked up to me and showed me this painting (in a coffee table art book), and told me I looked very like the girl from Vermeer’s masterpiece. Since then, I will always stop and try to parse what they saw that I don’t, but I’ve not been successful. I’ve never seen the film, interestingly. The fact that this is a vanilla scent (my favorite!), tells me it’s one for me. Thank you for the wonderful review, without which I’d not have heard about this fragrance! US resident. Thank you.

  • I’m just dying to smell this. In fact, I love the sensibility behind Ormonde Jayne Woman so much, that this, coupled with the fact that it’s an iris-based scent (my favorite note by far) and I’m a fan of what you call “discreet” village, would probably be enough to prompt a blind buy. I’ve not seen the movie, but am thinking this might be a fun pairing for the perfume-movie-matchup nights a friend and I are thinking about doing with our local perfume-lover’s group. Thanks for a great review. I’m from the US.

  • What a lovely review. I love the descriptiveness and idea of a ‘cool vanilla.’ Even until the end with the statement ‘the sillage is discreet,’ I loved this review.

I love vanilla. Warm vanilla, cool vanilla, cloying vanilla, I love it all. I cannot say I have tried any Ormonde Jayne yet.

I have not seen the movie, but having researched it, I may have to 🙂

Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I’m familiar with the painting, not the movie. Orris Noir mentioned in the article is one of the OJ I recently tried and like very much. The description in this review was well done and left me thinking I know what to expect. I personally experienced Ormonde Jayne’s perfumes just this year. Both of the ones I tried are quite luxurious and lovely. So besides that and loving vanilla, this is one I’d love to win. 🙂 USA

  • I have not seen the movie Girl With a Pearl Earring, and I do not have a favorite Ormonde Jayne Perfume. I would love to try Vanille d’Iris. I cannot imagine what the combination of vanilla and iris would be like, but I love both notes. Ermano Picco’s image of South Sea pearls is lovely. iris butter and cocao sound wonderful. USA.

  • Claire spriggy says:

I love iris and I love vanilla, would be amazing to win a bottle. Have only sampled a couple by OJ and Tolu was my favourite. I have sadly not seen the film but the images and the beautiful descriptions really bring this fragrance to life within my imagination. I’m in the Uk thanks for a fabulous draw.

  • Very nice review. I really enjoyed to read, all part of the review. I would very like to win, because I like the notes very much, sounds incredible. I have never tried any of Ormonde Jayne Perfume. I have seen the movie Girl With a Pearl Earring, it was quite interesting.
I’m a registered reader. Thanks for the draw.
    I live in Europe.

  • Loved reading about this, i’ve been waiting to have a review of it somewhere. I LOVE Iris anything, so this would be a great one to win! I have never had the opportunity to try any Ormonde Jayne’s. I knwo of the movie but never saw it. i’m in the US. Thanks!

  • The review is beautifully written and gives a vivid idea of the scent. I have been curious about Vanille d’Iris and the description of it being a cool vanilla with fruity aspects and a darker drydown sounds as sophisticated as I’d like a vanilla to be. Woman is the only perfume I’ve tried from the line and I like it very much. I’m in the EU.

  • Ever since receiving the email from Ormonde Jayne announcing this new fragrance, I’ve been wanting to try it. Iris? Yes!~ Vanilla? Yes! That was enough to make me crave it, and now this review. Beautifully described! I am familiar with the painting, but never saw the movie. It’s quite something how much Scarlett favors the girl in the painting. My favorite fragrances by OJ are Woman and Orris Noir. I’m in the US.

  • I have not seen the movie, but totally enjoyed reading the book. Taif is my favorite of the line. The Arabian roses are beautiful. The line comparing the scent to the smell of well worn pearls was my favorite in the review. I am in the US.

  • This is my favorite part of the review: “Vanille D’Iris never turns too sticky or warm, giving the illusion of a cool vanilla. The pearl gets as dark as vanilla pods, intense and dry, wears flawlessly on a man as well, like a black pearl cufflings on a white shirt. “.

I did not have the lucky chance to try any of the Ormonde Jayne Perfume creations and this why I want to win this scent.

I really enjoyed the movie, was a good movie, it is really hard not to love Colin Firth. “How hard is it to paint a pretty girl?”.

I am a registered reader from the EU.

Thank you very much! Wish you all the best!

  • I do not know why that movie escaped my attention! I love Vermeer, I also own a reproduction pair of those earrings, lol! Gotta admit that the first thing I dd upon finishing this review was check Amazon to see if it was streaming (nope).

I love, love, LOVE orris butter and the “vegetal. . .peppery” opening reminds me of a few fragrances I am crazy about!!! Great review. Love the visual description of why it’s good for men, too. My fave scent from OJ is Ta’if. In the US.

And thanks for reminding me of Orris Noir; I’ve GOT to sample it!!

  • Wow – what a beautiful review from Ermano. His description of the scent makes me almost smell it right here and now. It feels very soft and sensual and that’s why i would love to win it. I have not had the pleasure of trying any OJ fragrances and this may be my chance.
Have not seen the film but have put it on my to see list.
    thanks from the UK.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Wonderful review! I loved how versatile it was described as–when I think of vanilla and iris I think a feminine powrderbomb, but it’s great to here it’s tinged with dryness and spice and works on a man. I love OJ perfumes overall, it’s hard to pick a favorite. Orris Noir is up there, as is Ormonde Woman, Ta’if, and Tiare. Never seen the movie but Scarlett certainly looks the part! I’m from the US and would love to be entered into the draw. Thanks!

  • I enjoyed Ermano’s use of pearl-like images for the fragrance: “nacre layers,” “milky iridescence,” “opalescent.” I know you’re supposed to avoid exposing pearls to perfume, but I don’t think I’d mind at all if my pearl necklace smelled like iris and vanilla! I did not see the movie, but really liked the book by Tracy Chevalier. My favorite OJ scent is Tolu. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am a “Pearl Girl”… love them and own some prescious black tahiatians. I loved the description of glowing on the skin… They do have a rather sensual scent all their own when combined with the warmth of the skin… just saying. This was a brilliant take on this perfume… The compositon and notes sound like it was tailored made for this Pearl Girl… and the fact that the longevity and sillage fit my current requirements are perfect.. I have seen the movie three times 😉 a keeper. My favorite Ormaonde Jane perfumes are Tolu, Black Gold & Frangipani, Yes, I’m a fan of OJ. I am a registered US reader

  • This review takes my breath away. The phrase I loved was that Herr Schoen works like Vermeer to scrape a Tahiitian vanilla pod of its seeds and covers them with nacre. Beautiful writing. The movie was really great and like another commentor I enjoyed tieing the Girl with the Pearl Earring into the perfume. I adore Orris Noir so I know I will love Vanille d Iris . If I don’t win I will buy it.
    I live in the U.S.

  • I love vegetal openings to perfumes, and iris is one of my favorite notes. I’d be absolutely thrilled to win this. I love Ta’if from the OJ collection. I live in the USA. Thank you for the draw and the review!

  • I enjoyed the way Ermano wrote about the layers of Vanille D’Iris like the layers of a pearl. But thinking back on the film, the description is rather like the unfolding of the story. It started with what I recall is the young innocence of Scarlett Johsnnsen’s character, then it becomes more sensual and complex. I had forgotten that Colin Firth played Vermeer. I love experiencing vanilla accords ( almost as much as watching films with Colin Firth) and have been awaiting this particular fragrance. Ormonde Jayne is one of my favorite houses- I have tried Woman, Tolu, and I have Sampaquita. Thank you.

  • Oh my, that sounds really lovely. I only have one vanilla in my collection (Diptyque Eau duelle) and I have recently been on the search for another, but not the cupcake type. This might be the one. I haven’t seen the movie, but the book was a great read. I live in WA state. Thanks!!!

  • Well, this sounds perfectly beautiful without being sickly sweet. I absolute love the line – Slowly the floral aroma of Tahitian vanilla appears, emphasized by the milky iridescence of magnolia petals and Tahitian white pearls. I’m intrigued by the milky iridescence of magnolia petals!! I’ve never really tried any OJ scents, and I haven’t seen this movie either. I need to remedy both! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • This is just a wonderfully descriptive review, all around. It makes the fragrance come alive in my mind. My favorite OJ is probably Ta’if, although I haven’t tried everything in the line. I haven’t seen the movie, but I would like to. I’m in the US-thanks for the draw!

  • Fresh peppery green opening, vegetal, sounds right up my alley and from the sound of it the vanilla never really takes over in a sweet overpowering way. It does sound magnificent and Iris butter is one of my favorite notes. If this is as beautiful as many in the OJ line I am sure this will be fantastic. I am in the US My favorite OJ is probably Tolu followed by Tsarina. I am in the US.

  • Geza Schoen is a master! I know many of his creations and I know that when he makes something, it will be really good! Vanille d’Iris sounds really interesting! And the association of the fragrance with pearls seems very poetic and delicate. All the notes sound lovely and I am sure Vanille d’Iris is going to be great. I have seen the movie and my favourite from Ormonde Jayne is Isfarkand.
I am from EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love the idea of comparing a perfume with a specific painting or the work of certain artist – and Vermeer is my favorite so Ermano’s choice could not have been more tempting! As Vermeer is to painting, so iris is to perfume notes for me – a favorite – and of course I’ve hardly met a vanilla I didn’t like. I’ve both seen the film and read Tracy Chevalier’s book, The Girl with the Pearl Earring. My mother even owns a copy of the painting that was painted by a friend of ours – it’s a family favorite. I haven’t had the chance to try any Ormonde Jayne fragrances, yet! I live in the US – thanks for the opportunity.

  • The description of the base sounds so good – The finest quality iris butter seems dusted with cocoa and that’s where vanilla and iris most evidently embrace in a darker drydown empowered by a cedarwood and licorice…My favorite(s) from the OJ line are Tolu and Ormond Woman. I have not seen the movie, but will research on it. I live in Singapore. Thanks for the draw.

  • Ermano’s review reminded me that pearls are sexy. They are for much more than wearing with sweater twin sets . . . ooh la la!

I have always loved vanilla in fragrance so I would love to try Vanille d’Iris. I don’t have a favorite Ormonde Jayne scent, but this could be it.

I love the movie Girl with a Pearl Earring. It was so memorable, moving, even disturbing in a way. I was angry at Colin Firth when the movie ended! I live in the US. Thank you for the draw and the inspiring review. The connections between the arts made here make me think about what is beautiful.

  • I like Ermano’s comparison of the vanilla to a radinat, pearl earring. That certainly piqued my interest. I’m curious to smell how a vanilla note can be used in such a way.

My favorite OJ is Frangipani. Such a happy and uplifting perfume. I’ve never watched the movie but boy, Scarlett can certainly channel that girl in the original painting.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada

  • Vanilla fragrances tend to be loud because vanilla often overcomes other notes..this one seems like radiant vanilla which also lets other notes speak such as iris..Ermano’s descriptions makes it seem like I may see a glimpse of Guerlain iris Ganache in it. thanks a lot for the lovely dra. I am in the US. My favorite Ormonde creation is Nawab of Oudh

  • I’m familiar with both the book and the movie- loved them both for the fine historic reconstruction
Ermano’s rewiew was an ode to pearls
I love both vanilla and iris, I am so keen to smel this composition ( beside, Orris Noir is my OJ favorite)
    I live in Israel

  • What a lovely review! I like how the pearl in the movie (and painting) was used as an illustration for the perfume. Very nice review. I enjoyed the movie Girl With A Pearl Earring, or at least the beautiful visuals. It was perhaps a bit slow moving. I think Champaca is my favorite OJ. I haven’t smelled any of her newer releases. Thank you for the draw. USA

  • Ermano’s reviews are always a treat, and when it’s about ‘pearls dark like vanilla pods’, ‘parures in Linda Pilkington’s jewelry box’ and entering a Vermeeresque world- and it’s all a buttery iris, with traces of cacao and licorice, well I’m completely sold.
Girl with a Pearl Earring is a beautiful picture choice, I liked both movie and book very much, but much prefer the “original”- the Vermeer painting 🙂
Thank you so much for the draw and the review.
    (From Denmark)

  • Light and shadow are the words that intrigue me.Capturing the interplay of the very Beautiful and precious essences to make a work of art that captures the spirit of the painting and of course the book and film. All are works of art. Truly an achievement!

  • I like my iris with a little sweetness or warmth, and I love pearls, so this entire review is very enticing. The only OJ perfume I’ve tried is Taif, which is one of my favorite rose perfumes. I have not seen Girl with a Pearl Earring, but now that I know that Colin Firth is in it, I’ll have to remedy that. I’m in the US.

  • FragrantWitch says:

This sounds divine. I recently received a beautiful pearl and white gold necklace from my husband and this fragrance sounds as if it will complement the feel of the necklace very well.
My favourite Ormonde Jayne is Ormonde Jayne Woman with Orris Noir not too far behind.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • The review is very inspiring. I’m on a hiatus atm, haven’t done research & tried new perfume for a long time, but it makes me feel like I have to come back 🙂 I only have one favourite vanilla scent, it’s Mona di Orio Vanille. I’ve been struggling on loving vanilla. So I’m very curious about this new Geza’s creation.
I’m in USA. Thank you for this awesome giveaway.

  • I enjoyed reading the whole review especially Ermano’s detailed description of vanilla. I loved his reference of discreet vanilla as far as sillage part is concerned.
I have seen twice The Girl with the Pearl Earring, and I really liked it, a very well made film. Also the painting is one of my very favorite ones.
I love vanilla and in general gourmand notes, not to forget Iris which I adore. Vanilla de Iris must smell amazingly well, however I never had the chance to experience any creation from this House.
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank you both for the review and draw as well.

  • I’m intrigued by Ermano’s description of the vanilla as “cool” … I never thought of the difference between cool and warm vanilla before, but maybe warm vanilla is the one that starts to smell a little sickening on me very quickly. Perhaps cool vanilla is what I need! I want to win so I can test my hypothesis … and also because the scent sounds lovely. I am unfamiliar with Ormonde Jayne Perfumes, and I’ve yet to see the movie. I’m in USA.

  • Jennifer Witt says:

I would love to win as I adore Ormonde Jayne and the review refers to this fragrance as having excellent longevity which is something I need in my life as my skin eats most perfume. I have a sampler set of Ormonde Jayne scents that I draw from regularly. An excellent and unique brand all around! I live in the USA. I never saw the Girl with a Pearl earring, but hope to some day. I admire Scarlett Johansson’s range of work, and Vermeer (Firth) isn’t bad either!

  • I love your rewiew. I have seen the movie and now i feel i have to see it again… The way you describe it: “the finest quality iris butter seems dusted with cocoa and that’s where vanilla and iris most evidently embrace in a darker drydown empowered by a cedarwood and licorice tinged ambery base”.
I just love it. It must be a scent for me! I would love to wear this!
    I live in Sweden 🙂

  • What a great review!! I would love to win because I love Iris and Vanilla, especially together. Not familiar with the movie. Have smelled the OJ Frangipani and adore it. I live in the U.S. And this is my favorite part of the review.
The finest quality iris butter seems dusted with cocoa and that’s where vanilla and iris most evidently embrace in a darker drydown empowered by a cedarwood and licorice tinged ambery base echoing the sumptuous trail of another Ormonde Jayne Iris,
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I would love to try this cool vanilla! Sounds so good. I love how Ermano describes the fragrance.
I have seen The Girl with the Pearl Earring – fascinating film with very good performances. Simply loved it’s atmosphere and the actors were perfect.
I’ve never had a chance to try anything from Ormonde Jayne.
    USA. Thank you!

  • I’m a fan of the Ormonde Jayne house, especially Ormonde Woman, which had me taking out my credit card to purchase a bottle in record time. Iris can be a tough note for me to appreciate, but I like the description of this fragrance being “a masterpiece of subtlety, light and shadow.” I saw The Girl with the Pearl Earring when it was in theaters but barely remember it; the actual painting is gorgeous. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I’ve not had the chance to try any Ormande Jayne but they all sound lovely. I love the idea of this one combining iris, cocoa and vanilla, especially it being a ‘cool’ vanilla. Saw the movie when it came out but can’t recall much about it. I remember being very young and smelling irises at my great aunt’s house and being delighted with their amazing fragrance. Thanks for the great draw! (I live in the US)

  • Thank you for the draw!

My favorite Ormonde Jayne is Ormonde Jayne Woman– it’s been in my top 5 all-time desert island perfumes since I first tried it.
I love OJ, Geza Shoen, and vanilla in fragrance so I would love to try Vanille d’Iris. I also love Vermeer’s sense of light and would love any scent that feels like that! In general I like comparisons to other kinds of art, especially visual, in addition to notes, because it gives a great sense of the evoked emotions. Thanks Ermano!
    USA

  • What a Review for a scent! I Love the Image of the scent of Pearls that have been worn for hours. This is my scent! Something very calm and powdery, I would Love to Test it. I don’t know any scent of Ormonde Jayne so I would like have it. i live in Europe and I Love the paintings of Johannes Vermeer!!!

  • Great review! I absolutely love the combo of vanilla and iris and think it would make a very sexy duo. Especially now that the weather is cooling down where I live. My favorite fragrance from this house at the moment is Ormonde Man. Thank you for the draw and I’m in Canada!

  • I have seen the movie, and it is quite haunting! Vanille d’Iris sounds interesting because I like iris as a note, and I have honestly never thought about the smell of pearls (but I am really curious now!). I am in the US, thank you!

  • Such a beautifully written and illustrated review. The description of the vanilla accord is so enticing. I can’t wait to try another creation by Geza Schoen.

My favorite Ormonde Janyne is Black Gold; of course, Woman is a masterpiece.

    I live in the U.S.

  • I love the pearl analogy and the beautiful, visual language Ermano uses to describe this perfume. Ormonde Jayne is one of my all-time favourite perfume houses — it’s not easy to come by in Canada and my one bottle of Ormonde Woman is such a treasure. Vanille d’Iris sounds just as captivating. Thanks for the draw!

  • Great association with pearls. I’d like to win as i love vanilla, i got several vanilla scents. But i dont know Ormond Jayne’s. thanks for the draw. EU.

  • I love the description of it being truly unisex, “wears flawlessly on a man as well, like a black pearl cufflings on a white shirt”. I would love to win this draw because I have yet to try any from the Ormonde Jayne line. I live in the US. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • I loved the book and the movie, Girl with a Pearl Earring and the whole comparison of this new scent to pearls is intriguing to me. I really loved Taif from OJ with its spicy roses. This sounds even more incredible and I would love to try it. I also enjoy Oud Nawab as a different take in oud. I live in the UAE.

  • Fantastic job on the review! I haven’t tried an Ormonde Jayne scent before, but I really like the sound of this one. I love vanilla in fragrances, it works very well on my skin. Canada

  • I am not familiar with Ormonde Jayne, but the description sounds so elegant and classy, the smell of beauty. I have had the book Girl with the Pearl Earring on my reading list for a while, I usually like reading the book before seeing the movie, but I am very intrigued with the movie so I may break my rule. 🙂
I am a registered reader in Saskatchewan Canada.

  • Vermeer is my favourite painter and I have been in front of at least 20 of his paintings in different european cities and visiting exhibitions consacrated to this outstanding painter. Of course I have been staring in front of The Girl wth a pearl earring in The Hague and as I was young I had a picture of this painting in my bedroom, then I know by heart this face and this sad look and when I saw this picture in your review (and the film that of course I have seen but I didn’t like so much, the book it was better) I knew I must try this one. Indeed , I know some of Ormonde Jane scents and I’m fascinated with Tsarina and now wanting to try this oriental iris-vanille.
I’m in EU. Thanks for the draw 😀

  • I think I’ll drown from over-salivating, if I get to read it one more time ( three times so far). I must try this! Ermano described it so vividly and temptingly, that I would dream about it tonight! I love the idea of iris coupled with cocoa and vanilla! Moreover, I have never tested any of Ormonde Jayne’s fragrances, and I would very much like to know them in some way.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I read the novel The Girl With A Pearl Earring b Tracy Chevalier. It is brainy, and intense, and enthralling!
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the draw!

  • Great review! I love how Ermano describes the coolness of the vanilla in vanille d’iris. That is what appeals to me, I would love to have the chance to win this and my favorite is ormonde woman. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Very nice review. I really got a sense of how well made and high quality the fragrance is. I haven’t tried anything from this house, but this is a scent that interests me quite a bit. I’m in Canada and thank you for the draw
