New Fragrance Review: M. Micallef Secrets of Love Gourmet (Jean-Claude Astier and Geoffrey Nejman) 2017 + A Perfume of Pure Pleasure Draw

Gail's collection of M.Micallef Parfums (she purchased almost all)

I am an inveterate collector.  I admit it! A few years ago, when it became trendy to collect "experiences" instead of "things", I began to feel somewhat embarrassed about all the stuff I had amassed over the years – the stamps, rocks and minerals, jewelry, jade, pottery, porcelain and glassware, shoes, first editions of 19th century music, vinyl recordings, sea shells…The only collection that fit in with the "experience" trend (and the one I never felt I had to apologize for) was and continues to be my collection of perfumes.  Collecting fragrance is very different from, say, collecting seashells. Bottles of perfume can be works of art or nostalgic reminders of the past. The scents in the bottles can evoke very personal or more broadly cultural memories related to places, people and events. Also, perfumes are experienced directly as notes and accords that color our lives with vivid and immediate olfactory messages and impressions that are new and fresh with every wearing. Collecting perfumes is about collecting dreams, memories and immediate experiences as well as the bottles themselves, to be displayed on shelves or stored in cool, dark cupboards.

Secrets of Love Collection by Gail

In my large collection of fragrances the creations of Parfums Micallef stand out, not only for sheer numbers but also because the scents themselves are favorites that I wear often and the bottles are some of the most beautiful I own.  Martine Micallef, Geoffrey Nejman and Jean-Claude Astier continue to tempt me with their visual and olfactory arts.  One of M. Micaleff's newest creations(there were 9 shown at Esxence 2017), Secrets of Love Gourmet, the latest in the Secrets of Love Collection, is described by Parfums Micallef as: "Gourmet and Sensual. The warmth of unfurling incense woven with the brightness of chestnut, mingling with the intense leather and lush vanilla notes. Noble, intoxication, an irresistible love declaration. Love is for epicureans – be GOURMET".

Tim Walker for Vogue UK©

The word "epicurean" is a perfect description for the new M. Micallef Gourmet fragrance. "Epicurean" originally referred to the philosophy of the Greek Epicurus, identifying good with pleasure but recommending a quiet, withdrawn and moderate lifestyle.  Over the years the word has come to be identified with the connoisseur and the cultivation of refined tastes in food, music and art.

The word has also morphed into a meaning akin to hedonism and a devotion to excessive luxury and indulgence.

I associate the new Secrets of Love Gourmet with the epicurean notion of pleasure, refinement, luxury and sensuality but especially with the philosopher's idea of "ataraxia" – the experience of optimal, enduring pleasure and inner tranquility – never in excess (like many of my collections) but always balanced. Secrets of Love Gourmet opens with leather and a hint of something nutty, sweet and smoky – the scent of slightly burnt sugar caramelizing in a pan or perhaps the creamy sweet smell of toasting chestnuts (I have always liked the smell of roasted chestnuts better than their taste).

Natasha Poly by Willy Vanderperre for Vogue China November 2012©

This initial smoke, nuts and sweet leather develops after a few minutes into a buttery and glowing vanilla chestnut torte.  A touch of something phenolic – the residual leather perhaps – or the effect of aoud, incense and burning frankincense, remove this Gourmet from the realms of the Gourmand and create a sensual and intoxicating oriental fragrance. Secrets of Love Gourmet is a rich and bold perfume with a hint of violet and a slightly tart raspberry that keep the fragrance bright and airy enough to wear any time of the year. The sillage is pronounced but polite and the longevity is at least eight hours on my skin and days on clothing.  Secrets of Love Gourmet dries down much like it begins, with burnt sugar, vanilla and leather and finishes with labdanum, woody notes and aoud. M.Micallef Gourmet is pure pleasure, recalling the words of the philosopher Epicurus: "Pleasure is our first and kindred good. It is the starting point of every choice…"

Notes: Incense, raspberry, violet, leather, chestnut, labdanum, aoud, vanilla.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Parfums Micallef for the beautiful bottle of Secrets of Love Gourmet.  My opinions are my own.

When I was a teenager I collected so many things I had to stop. I got lost with so much to search for. I only continued collecting perfume miniatures. 35 years later I still collect them and I love all that is fragrances. Reading Gail’s review was wonderful. We can feel her love for Micallef:s fragrances that I have to be honest I don’t know. And the bottles are true work of art. Thank you for sharing your love Gail and thank you Micallef for your generous offer.

Never had the opportunity to try any scents from this house!
I know the name well, just have not sampled!!
    Have to fix that!
    I am in the USA.

  • I am not even sure where to start……I totally adore the Micallef bottles, they are works of art and this bottle is awesome also. Leather, nutty, sweet and smokey sounds like this would be a great perfume for a couple to share. I am already a fan of Micalllef fragrances and own several and I truly appreciate this draw and the opportunity. I am in the US.

  • Hi! I’m a Canadian so my first foray into collecting was of hockey cards back in early grade school. After that, I didn’t really collect things until my love of perfume turned into an obsession.

I haven’t had the opportunity to try many Micallefs, with the exception of Mon Parfum which is lovely. I loved to hear about Gail’s collecting bug and the notes of incense, leather and vanilla sound delightful.

  • I myself also I have not put my nose around this very well praised house! Don’t get into the city very often… Anyway very, interesting perspective of how fragrances “color our lives with vivid and immediate olfactory messages and impressions that are new and fresh with every wearing”. I have to agree with that completely! I am a photographer and I love to collect photographs of textures. I live in Southern Illinois.

I must confess I also have a certain habit of collecting. I was an avid stamps collector in grades 5-7. I also collected few currencies though the collection was nowhere close to stamps. Later I collected cds of computer games, movies, software (In 90s you could not really download lot of software from web in my country) and my perfume hobby started in the very first year in the US, partly, due to my fascination with fashion brands I had long fantasized about as a result of browsing through glamorous ads in GQ, Vogue, and W magazine etc 🙂 I agree Micallef has some of the most beautiful bottles in the industry and they continue to invest in new bottle designs instead of homogenizing them to send a consistent marketing message. Secrets of Love Gourmet is a gourmand but also airy and polite fragrance. My fav. Micallef is Sashka Black. Thanks for the generous draw. I am in the US.

  • I live in NZ. I always enjoy the directness of Gail’s reviews. Straight up. I feel like I understand totally whats on offer with her. Don’t get me wrong, I love the romance and mystery in other reviews but ‘say it how it is’ gets me everytime 🙂
The bottles are stunning and it is really a generous draw. I collect Blue Mountain China- Its usually around the 50’s – 70’s style, I just scored a stallion rearing the other week in an op shop- I have the vases with handles mainly all in the aqua marine shade. I have poodles, swans as well. Its a canadian brand for those who have never heard of it . This perfume could bring me a lot of pleasure:) I have not had the opportunity to try the Micallef range. Thanks

I am an enthusiastic collector of any and all things that I find beautiful and precious…some of my favorites are simple, common stones that I find on beach or river walks; for various reasons they catch my eye and become ‘favorites’. I also collect mini-perfume bottles…I love when they are exact replicas in miniature. I don’t believe I have had opportunity to sample any Micallef perfumes but this one sounds absolutely delicious and of course the bottles are impeccable. I am in the US and I thank you for the chance!

  • Not tried any of their fragrances, but the hedonistic and (dare I say) decadent vibe here really appeals. So I’d love to try this.

    I collect fragrances and countries.

    In the UK.

  • Thanks so much for the review you did, Gail. It was so interesting. I have a small sample of Osaito and I love it.

I collect knives. There is nothing quite as beautiful as a well maintained and polished knife. So dangerous…

    I live in Europe. Thanks!

  • In my childhood I collected feathers. I had so many colorful feathers of different kind of birds. They were beautiful. When I was teenager, I gave them to a child from the neighborhood, and she was so glad.
Unfortunately, I have never had a chance to try any of M. Micallef fragrances. I would be very glad If I would win this fabulous perfume. From the review It sounds wonderful. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • The chestnut note really is interesting and yes those bottles are so lovely. I wear ananda black and mon Parfum which I love. I would love to win gourmet. I live in the UK

  • I own a couple of Micallif perfumes so I am aware how they always smell of the best sourced notes and are beautifully refined. I enjoyed this review of this new perfume and the bottle is beautiful! I used to collect china sets from the 50s-70s, bought for a song on ebay. But I ran out of places to store them….they take a lot of room…so had to quit. Thanks for a great review and thanks to the perfumer for a generous draw. USA

  • Thanks for a great review and the giveaway. Micallef bottles indeed looks appealing for someone who would like to have them on display. The latest ones are no exception.

I have a small LP and perfume collections, but not big or thematic enough to call myself a collector. 🙂

    Greetings from Switzerland.

  • Didn’t have the pleasure to try any of Micalled perfumes and Gourmet sounds lovely; leather and oud, incense and raspberry make me want to try this one.
I have never been a true collector of anything; I used to collect some cards when I was a kid and I suppose some will find owning more than 10-20 perfume bottles a collection, but I don’t…
    I live in EU.

  • I like the sense of balance as relayed in the review. I’ve collected illustrated children’s fairy tales for quite awhile. Shanaan is a most interesting fragrance on this house. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • I liked everything about Gail’s review so I cannot pinpoint something specifically.
    I’m not a collector.
I’ve never tried a M. Micallef fragrance. I hope I will be able to do it now.
    I live in Romania.

    Thank you for this giveaway.

  • I like the notes and everything about this one. I collect antique books.
    Haven’t smelled any Micallef perfumes.

Thank you for the draw! I live in the USA.

    M. Micallef’s perfumes are one of my local group’s favorite brands. I’m in US. Ms. Gross review’s shows a gourmand perfume, and since I don’t own one in that category is what appeals to me here.

I only collect perfumes but its expensive hobby so I don’t collect other stuff. Emir is my introductory scent to them. And while me and oud doesn’t play well, on Emir I can tolerate it just fine. Thanks for the chance!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Great read! When I was kid/early teen, I was fond of collecting feathers and flowers. Then there was a big change to perfumes collection, expensive but quite happy & satisfied with it. Gail Gross associates the new Secrets of Love Gourmet in a perfect way, “epicurean”. M. Micallef perfume bottle are gorgeous, tempting and unfortunately I haven’t any of M. Micallef fragrances. The review for Secrets of Love Gourmet is fascinating and the notes are appealing.
Thanks to the generosity of Parfums M. Micallef and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I agree that the scent of roasted chestnuts is better than their taste, I would love to smell them in this scent. I like how it seems to not go completely gourmand but to also mix in oriental faucets. I have several Micallef scents with Ylang in Gold being a favorite. All of their bottles are amazing though! Thanks for the draw, I live in the UAE.

  • Gail’s description makes me hungry:) “… the creamy sweet smell of toasting chestnuts” sounds really delicious!

I haven’t smelled any Micallef perfumes. Thank you for the chance! I live in Europe

  • I am not familiar with the scent of roasted chestnuts but think it would be warm and cozy in a way that I would like to feel. I have no experience with this perfume house. I collect cardinal figurines, vintage and new, and have approximately 60. I live in the US. Thank you for this chance to try something new.

  • doveskylark says:

The combination of leather and chestnuts appeals to me. I love cities that have chestnut vendors….something so cozy about the smell.
I have started to collect vintage Caron fragrances.
I haven’t tried any Micallef, but I really want to try Emir.
    I live in the USA.

  • Bravo Gail for the review with beautiful introduction and straight conclusion. I used to collect rocks and minerals when I was studying mining. But, you are right collecting perfumes has another taste.
Regarding the new perfume, I love incense and labdanum with buttery vanilla, but I have concerns regarding raspberry and iris. I definitely need to sniff this one.
Royal Vintage is my favorite from the house.
Thank you again for the review and for the generous draw. Live in the US.

  • hugogrotius says:

Great review. Gourmet sounds very toxicating and irresitible. I imagine it to be warm with unfurling incense smoke that wovens with the brightness of chestnut, mingling with the intense leather and lush vanilla notes. This for sure sounds epicurean.
I live in Poland EU and I collect perfumes only. My heart belongs to Akowa and Royal Vintage.

  • Excellent review that makes me want to try it even more. I do think that the bottle looks exquisite as well. This would be a perfect addition to my collection of bottles. Thanks for the draw.

Sounds like a perfect comfort scent. Labdanum is a difficult note for me, but I love burnt sugar and vanilla mix.

I live in Europe and I collect coffee mugs!

    Thank you for the review!

  • RoseMacaroon says:

Oh my god, where to start – everything about this scent sounds like mad intoxication to me. My grandmother had one consistent tendency in her cooking, which was to overcook the crap out of everything – and I lived her burnt candy. While she was bemoaning her inattention / laziness, I’d just quietly hoover through the discard batch. I’d love to experience something akin to that in a perfume! Also loved the discussion of epicureanism, that is just too good. I’m in SF bay area, where it is sunny enough that I look ridiculous still wearing wool cats and massive sweater jackets, but these cannot be dispensed with as the intermittent blasts of oceanic wind keep me from being even vaguely overdressed – honestly, the April showers (happening) are so much easier for me. I collect perfume, and frilly steampunkish / vintage clothing which I lack the courage to wear in public. Big Huge Thanks for the draw!

  • I collect music, which is much easier in the digital age. Everything about this fragrance sounds nice, but I’m particularly interested in a chestnut note because that’s something I love about Nuit de Noel. My favorite M. Micallef fragrance to date is Black Sea. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • What an exotic fragrance this is. Love the warmness and sweetness in this one. I collect fragrances! I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • I think Gail’s review was one of the most mouth watering inducing that I’ve read in years. And I like how unafraid she is at admitting her indulgences:) This fragrance sounds amazing!!! My favorite Micallef currently is The No. 1. So great for the upcoming months.
I live in the USA. Your opportunities on here never cease to amaze.
