NEW FRAGRANCE REVIEW Dita Von Teese: The Quiet Smolder of Seduction + Celebuscent Draw

In the last decade or so, there has been a resurgence in burlesque. The art of striptease a la Gypsy Rose Lee has been revived by a cadre of young women who have come to realize that they don’t have to bare all to be successful and entertaining. One of the pre-eminent pioneers in the revival of classic burlesque is Dita Von Teese. Best-known for her act of performing a never-bare-all striptease that culminates with a splash in a giant martini glass (she and her act were recently featured in an episode of CSI), she titillates without being crude, and is highly glamorous. She is a retro-style glamour girl, with a modern sensibility. Her hourglass figure is enhanced by corsetry, her raven-black hair and red lips accentuate her porcelain skin, and her style is emulated by many.

When I first read that Dita Von Teese was launching a perfume, I was thrilled. This was a celebrity scent I could get behind. The material I read enforced my desire to try the scent, because she refused to produce a standard vanillic fruity-floral, and was very involved in the formulation and final product. She seems to be teasing her perfume audience as much as she does her burlesque audience, because the release of this perfume has been excruciatingly slow. First launched last year in Germany, May 1st marks its debut at Liberty of London. A fabulous perfume fairy was able to mule a bottle back to me from Germany, and I am completely delighted to have some at last.

I have worn the eponymous Dita Von Teese perfume during the day and at night, and I have to say, it is best at night. Dita was adamant that the scent be seductive, and it is. It is also very quiet. I was expecting a bit of a bombshell fragrance, and although I was initially nonplussed by the subtlety of the scent, once I wore it at night, I understood it. When you want to seduce someone, you want them to be intrigued by your aroma, not blown over by it. You want them to scootch a bit closer to you on the divan, and lean in when you are speaking. This is a perfume that creates that atmosphere of mystery perfectly.

The perfume opens as a slightly spicy floral scent, the sweetness tempered by a subtle bergamot and pepper.  The pepper is well-utilized here – it adds tingle to the nose, but never overwhelms the delicate peony.  The almost corrupt smell of peonies is captured nicely in this scent, which is rare. The floral bouquet at the heart is darker than you would think it would be with tiare and jasmine in the mix. The drydown is warm and beckoning, and the fragrance remains true to its floral heart throughout.  It does not have huge sillage, but that’s where the allure comes in. You have to nuzzle to get to it. My nose is fairly glued to my wrist as I write, but the scent is definitely not faint. It is a well-balanced perfume, and very wearable.

I make a point of not being a perfume snob and have tried a lot of celebuscents. Dita Von Teese is a celebrity scent that fits into the higher-end of the genre when it comes to pricing and quality of materials. It is definitely near the top of my list of feminine, sensual fragrances. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but thoughtfully created to fit a personality, and I will be happy when it is more readily available in more countries, especially mine. In the meantime, I will enjoy my shower gel and little tasseled boudoir bottle of scent, and try like heck not to hoard it.

Notes are bergamot, bourbon pepper, rose, peony, tiare, jasmine, sandalwood, patchouli and musk.

Perfumer is Nathalie Lorson.

Dita Von Teese is available as eau de parfum, body lotion, shower gel, and deodorant.

It is available in Switzerland at Müller drugstore and Manor department stores;
Austria at dm and Müller drugstores; Germany at Müller, Rossmann, dm drugstores, Kaufhof, Karstadt, Douglas stores and Douglas online; and England at Liberty of London (online and in store) from May 1st 2012.

  • Tami Holubar says:

Thank you for the draw Tama! Have only tried one Celebscent, Liz Taylor’s White Diamonds.

  • Victoria Casey says:

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it but it’s Jessica Simpsons Fancy Love. I also love White Diamonds.

  • Does Kinski count as Celebuscent? If so, that one. If not, Prince’s perfume, which I’ve never sniffed but would want anyway, just because it’s Prince.

  • Tilda Swinton Like This. It’s not really my kind of thing, but I can admire how it’s made, and it’s of course nothing like the more ubiquitous celeb scents at mass markets and dept. stores.

  • No, I don’t have any celeb favorite fragrance, but I liked this, I need to test it, it seems like something different.

  • Tourbillion says:

I don’t think I own a single one. I like the bottle that Katie Perry Purr comes in, if that counts.

  • Hi Tama!
My fave celubscent is a tie, Deneuve by Catherine Deneuve or Lovely by SJP, I feel both are well-done and I’ve had fun wearing them.
I really enjoyed reading your article, I’m looking forward to trying Dita’s perfume and love that it comes in a full range of products, including deodorant.

  • Oh, i have been eagerly awaiting this one for quite a while now, , would love to try it!

I guess my favorite celebuscent would have to be Deneuve, since I adore chypres and even though it’s gone now it set a high standard. Nothing else come close, but among the current crop ELDO’s Like This for Tilda Swinton is a standout.

  • Great review I agree sexy doesn’t mean LOUD
Kate Walsh boyfriend and queen Latifah were pretty good
Thanks for offering us a sample

  • My favorite celebuscent is Deneuve followed by SJP Lovely.
I love that this comes with a body lotion. Layering seems to help anchor a scent to my fragrance eating skin. I would love to try this.

  • It is hard for me to pick just one so….myy fave celebuscentS (and I own many *giggles*) are:

HIS: “cumming” by Alan Cumming (divine!!)
SHARED: K&L Unbreakable Bond (I was pleasantly shocked actually!)
    HERS: a tie between-

Queen Latifah’s Queen of Hearts (a dreamy floral incense frag)
    &
Kate Walsh Boyfriend (superb musky floral vanilla that, to me, comes off very unisex)

This, however, sounds amazing! Great review Tama (and thanks for sharing!) 😉

  • I haven’t sniffed too many celebuscents yet but this is one I would love to try! I hope it becomes available in America soon. Kate Walsh’s Boyfriend was pretty nice, I went through my sample really quick but not sure if it’s FBW. I did really like the ELDO Tilda Swinton Like This, as a daytime scent, but once again never went for the bottle.

  • I would love to try this one!! Thanks for sharing. My favorite celebuscent is LAMB by Gwen Stefani- it is difficult and many have said the worst for it but on me it smell heavenly!!

  • Deneuve for me too! I’m hoarding my last bits of the parfum. I love Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds on my Mom. I think that my favorite currently-available celebuscent is Because Of You by Jordin Sparks, the least-expensive scent I have ever purchased! $10 at Dots stores! It’s a beautiful, well-made gourmand.

  • No I do not have a favorote celebscent. But from the sound of this one I may soon.

  • Wow, now I not only want to try Dita Von Teese, but find a bottle of Deneuve as well! I’m not keen on celebrity scents, with the exception, though, of Sara Jessica Parker’s Lovely. Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • I love Liz Taylor scents, and ELDO Rossy de Palma. I’m normally not a celebuscent sorta gal, but those do it for me. Tilda’s is also good but doesn’t smell good on me. I have been waiting so excruciatingly fr Dita’s release since I first heard about it – I can’t wait to get my hands on it! Thanks for the draw 🙂

  • By far Deneuve is the best of celeb frags.
There are few others that are wearable and pleasant. There is one I can’t wait to try: Truth or Dare . I love white florals and heard this one is not bad.

Now, I don’t like anything about Dita but her fragrance sounds interesting.

  • Farawayspices says:

I have to admit I was more intrigued by the concept of a Dita Vaon Teese celebscent than all of the recent Beiber, Swift, etc introductions. I do not generally seek out celebrity scents….my last purchase was back when I was in high school, it was Deneuve, At the time I had not yet seen any of her movies but I knew she was elegant and French and it smelled very sophisticated.

  • I haven’t tried Like This, but what with the pumpkin, I imagine it might be my fav celeb frag. On the whole, frankly, I don’t like the idea of them — who wants to smell like someone else? Lol that being said, I would love to try Dita’s perfume.

  • I haven’t ever really tried out celeb scents, but I love the idea of a burlesque scent! Pink pepper and peony sounds like win!

  • Halle Berry’s original is good, Lovely by SJP is great, and something about Elizabeth Taylor’s Violet Eyes makes me want to sample whenever I see a bottle! Would love to try this.

  • Cumming by Alan Cumming is my favorite celeb scent! It’s very unusual. Thanks for the draw!

  • I always keep an open mind and have been pleasantly surprised by a few celebrity launches, including Kate Walsh Boyfriend, Hilary Duff With Love, Britney Spears Believe, and Elizabeth Taylor Violet Eyes.

My favorite celubscent? Probably Sarah Jessica Parker Covet.

    Thanks for this draw!

  • Right now it’s the Jennifer Aniston scent, but I would love to try this!

  • My favorite celebuscents are Queen by Queen Latifah and Kate Walsh’s Boyfriend.

  • Christine says:

I am fairly new to perfume and have not yet tried a celebuscent, though there are a few that sound quite nice. Denuve, SJP Lovely, the Tilda Swinton one, and the Hilary Duff one are ones I wouldn’t mind trying.

  • I love the pictures, Tama and the review. I’m not a fan of celebuscents but I’ve smelled a few. Brittney Spears, curious is the last one that I recall sniffing:)
But DVT has always been different I’d imagine her perfume would be different as well.
    Thanks for the generous draw:)

  • I have no favorite celebuscent but I remainopen to the possibility of having one someday…

  • kastehelmi says:

My favorite celebrity scent on me is Tilda Swinton Like This, cause I love ginger as much as I love Tilda! I also adore Cumming by Alan Cumming (thanks for the reminder GypsyParfumista!) I would love to try Deneuve but haven’t had the opportunity yet!

I adore Dita and share her passion for old school glamour and vintage appreciation–and a spicy yet delicate floral that reads “sensual” is one I could wear every day. If I can’t try this soon I might have to find a mule to get my own bottle! 😉

  • I am looking forward to this hitting stateside. Like you, this is a celebrity scent I was eager to try. My favorite celebrity scents are Cumming (sex, scotch, and cigars), EldO Rossy de Palma, and CdG Daphne which looked like a hot mess when I read the list of notes…but it’s fab. I also loved the SJP Lovely oil that was on the shelves for about 12 minutes.

  • Cristina says:

ELDO Like This, probably not fair to brand it as a celeb scent considering the class that puts it in.

  • I liked SJP Covet, loved Lovely, Liked Halle by Halle Berry, and my mom always wore White Diamonds and Passion, so it reminds me of her. i would love totry this fragrance.

  • It is kind of a sweet fruity/floral scent, but Rihanna’s Reb’l Fleur is a celebrity scent I like. I like it as a fun summer slightly coconutty fragrance.

  • Connor M says:

a celebrity fragrance that doesn’t make me roll my eyes? yes please

    🙂

  • Tommasina says:

SJP’s Lovely would be my preferred celebuscent, as long as it’s in the Liquid Satin version: that seems more rounded than the original version, to my nose and on my skin. It will also forever be the scent of my 5th wedding anniversary.

‘fraid I don’t like CdG Daphne, or Like This – but wouldn’t mind trying Kinski.

    Thanks for the drawing!

  • I don’t personally have one. But a couple of years ago I bought the Jessica Simpson one for my daughters and thought it was good for 18 years old.

  • I do have a favourite celebrity scent, and that is Britney Spears Believe.
One of the nicest fresh patchouli scents I’ve discovered with a unique array of fruits.
