NEW FRAGRANCE REVIEW: CB I Hate Perfume #205 7 Billion Hearts + Vanilla Draw

Vanilla! That one word is the perfumista equivalent of “Boo!” Say you have a new vanilla fragrance and watch the fragrance fanatic start looking for a way to run. I’m betting a few of you have already put your hand over the mouse ready to click away from this review. Don’t do it because for his latest fragrance Christopher Brosius has created a vanilla fragrance that smells like something unearthed from an ancient treasure chest . If that image doesn’t convince you that the new CB I Hate Perfume #205 7 Billion Hearts is not your typical vanilla fragrance then go ahead and move along there is nothing to see here.

Still here? 7 Billion Hearts is part of Mr. Brosius’ Reinvention Series wherein he looks to reinvent the history of perfumes. This series contains some of my favorites by Mr. Brosius like Tea/Rose, Violet  Empire, and Patchouli Empire. Just look at that list and you see three of the most used, and misused, notes in perfume in rose, violet, and patchouli. With 7 Billion Hearts Mr. Brosius adds vanilla to his list of reinventions.

What makes this vanilla so different and what makes it so unique is that this fragrance never really turns sweet. Even when the source of vanilla is the greener vanilla orchid, the vanilla always conveys a sweet quality. In 7 Billion Hearts this is the vanilla of vanilla extract. If you’ve ever cooked with vanilla extract you will have an idea of what 7 Billion Hearts smells like. What Mr. Brosius does is to take that concentrated vanilla and swathe it in resins which serve to accentuate not the common sweet character but the much more uncommon smoky character.

The opening of 7 Billion Hearts is the concentrated quality of vanilla absolute. It is intense and in that intensity any hint of sweetness is washed away. There is a bit of bite like with vanilla absolute as the very early going can feel a bit much if you’re not ready for it. The first time I wore it 7 Billion Hearts almost made me run. The second time I was ready for it and I really appreciated it all the more. Then like swirls of smoke a veritable resin-a-palooza takes place. It seems like every resin in Mr Brosius’ organ made it into 7 Billion Hearts and each one interacts with the vanilla concentrate differently. It is this resinous riot that imparts a sense of age upon 7 Billion Hearts making it seem hundreds of years old instead of months. It is an incredible gorgeous illusion.

7 Billion Hearts seems to last for 7 billion minutes because I sprayed some on Friday morning and it stayed with me until Saturday afternoon. I also got a lot of comment upon it and that means the sillage is more than I thought it was too.

I love Mr. Brosius’ ability to create fragrant landscapes and scent memories but this Reinvention Series is really turning into a special corner of the CB I Hate Perfume family because with each of these fragrances Mr. Brosius allows me to learn something entirely different about a note I thought I knew everything about. If when I say “Vanilla!” you want to run away, trust me when I say “7 Billion Hearts!” you want to come running for a unique olfactory experience.

I actually love vanilla, though many vanilla based fragrances do disappoint me. A fragrance that showcases a smoky character sounds very intiguing.

A note that makes me want to run is the shrill, obvious, sharp and pervasive citrusy-sharp ‘clean” note found in so many of what I call “mall fragrances”, the signature fragrances found in the teen stores that flood into the walkways of shopping malls. I think (or I would like to think) this note is starting to become less common or trendy, but I find it truly repulsive.

  • Mr. Brosius has the very unique talent of recreate memories in a bottle, my favorite memorie is Burning Leaves!

  • I love vanilla fragrances – Mona di Orio Vanille, Parfumerie Generale Felanilla, Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille….

A note that makes me run away is immortelle – for some reason my nose/brain just perceives it as grating, and I can’t focus on any other notes if it is strongly present.

  • I despise IRIS! Powdery, make-up-y. But I don’t shy away from vanilla, as I have quite a sweet tooth…

  • A note that makes me run away-Juicy fruit
My Favorite CB scent is In the Library and Mr Hulot’s Holiday.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • I’m really not keen on vanilla, but I was intrigued by this the first time I heard about it and am more intrigued now that I’ve seen this review.

  • Oh my, I have many notes that I tend to run from. However I’d have to say that my arch-nemesis would be the big pineapple. It smells like sweat on my skin. Yucky.
I do however, love vanilla, especially niche takes on the note, for example the unsweetened Vanille Exquise and Vanille 44.
I would love the chance to try 7 Billion Hearts. Thanks, count me in!

  • This is a really good review. I loved when you said that 7billion hearts smells like something from an ancient treasure chest
There are so many CB I hate perfumes I love patchouli empire is one and Burning leaves
Lately I am running from oud there is just too much of it and most are really forgettable I am not a fan of calone either

  • Melon, tobacco and powder, eek!
Vanilla is fab and I love finding great, not too sweet, vanillas that are sexy, not gourmand. Not that gourmand can’t be sexy, I’m sure some people think it is, I think I’m just not foodie enough for all that.

  • Cool, Mark! Love vanilla, but lavender for some reason takes me back to a medical office (never good). Might be relaxing but not on me baby! Have no fave since I have not gotten my nose around any CB yet (my bad) and I obviously need to!

  • Grapefruit sends me running. I love it in the abstract, but the second it hits my skin it is Eau de Gym Bag. :). And I love, love, live Burning Leaves.

  • Amber makes me run away. Disagrees with my skin type. I have not had the good fortune to try a CB I Hate Perfume fragrance yet, but have heard many raves!

  • Of the ones I’ve had the chance to try, Wild hunt and Black March are my favorite CB I Hate Perfume scents. They’re quite special.

Floral notes are a challenge for me if they are prominent, especially jasmine and orange blossom.

Vanilla is a lovely note in quite a few of my favorite fragrances.

  • This year the no, no, please no note is Oud. Last year it was Rose. One year before it was aquatic.
And if somebody wants to scare me to death please use: rose oud.

I would love to try this vanilla!

  • My favorite CB scent is Violet Empire! I don’t think there’s one note in particular that makes me run away… i’d smell anything once =)

  • Aquatic/marine notes and “red fruit” scare the crap out of me. I run, hide, and rarely show my face again nearby. Once in a great while, I am surprised, pleasantly, by well done red fruit notes, but mostly not. Aquatics, never; they smell horrible on me and I’m glad. My nose despises them, even on others.

However, I LOVE vanilla 🙂 especially expertly utilized, as it sounds in 7 Billion Hearts. Thanks for the draw!

  • I used to love tuberose, but just recently it’s begun to make me a little ill. The CB IHP scent I like very much is In the Library. I adore the name 7 billiion hearts!

  • Black current and pepper – not my kind of aroma! Not every time, but as soon as I can sense them, my stomach is trying to leave my body…
Thanks for the draw – I know vanilla soothes my senses and I’d be thrilled to get some of CB’s!

  • My “scary” notes are all the sweet ones. Ans amber, well, it attracts me in the first place, and immediatly after it gives me headache. Anyway, I’m really intrigued in trying a non sweet vanilla.

  • I get migraines from tuberose so this is a runaway
    I love vanilla preferably unsweetened
Please, enter me the draw, thanks

  • For me the most unlike notes is tuberose and lily of the valley. It is interesting, because in nature I really like the smell of lily of the valley and about tuberose, there is one perfume in which I like tuberose (Fracas).
On the other hand on this review unfortunately I have never tried none of the CB I Hate Perfume scent 🙁
But I really like to try them, because in Hungary, where I live, there is no possibility to try them.
Thank you for the draw. 🙂

  • Lovely review I would love to try this reinvention of Vanilla. What really makes me run away in perfumes is Patchouli . Sometimes it is just tooooo much!

  • This sounds great! I’ve not yet tried any of CB’s fragrances, and needless to say am VERY curious. I do have a few notes that really does make me want to run away, BUT then even they can be made wearable under the right circumstance. However on the very top of my run-away list is: melon, lychee and dill, and some cedar variants can be complete scrubbers on me- rancid stale peanut oil, or something like that. What fragrance nightmares are made of 😉

  • I love CB, love vanilla, LOVE smoky… so I think this one will be a winner. My favorite CB is At the Beach 1966 and been wanting to try Burning Leaves.

  • Violet and I just don’t *get* each other. My favorite CB is Black March. Thanks for the draw!

  • Oudh, as it shows up in most fragrances- with a few exceptions…Micallef knows how to do it as does By Kilian…

  • My favorite CB I hate perfume is I am a dandelion.

I have a sample of an Ajmal fragrance which contains oud and it is disgusting. It smells like the worst cheese in the world. I’m sure oud in other fragrances must be something different.

  • I normally hated vanilla until I came across Mona Di Orio`s sublime Nombre D`Or version of it. Being an admirer of Mr Brioisius and his amazing I am a Dandelion is simply dreamy I would love to try out his take on Vanilla..
    Thanks
    yash

  • Queen Cupcake says:

CBIHP Patchouli Empire is one of my very favorite perfumes, and have had a lot of compliments on it. The vanilla-resin riot sounds pretty interesting! I don’t know that I have a “run away” note…yet.

  • I love DK Gold, but something in it gave me a headache. I tried it 3 times, and every time I got a migraine, so I traded it away.
I’ve never tried CB I hate perfumes, so I would love to try this…and I love Coco, which I think has vanilla in it.

  • This vanilla sounds intriguing! My favourite CB frag is Russiona Caravan Tea and if I’m to name a note that meks me run it would be that bile-ish thing in Secretations Magnuefiques

  • Full of Grace says:

Love, love, love Burning Leaves. Reminds me of back east and memories associated with it. This new CB sounds fabulous!

  • patchouli empire is actually one of my all-time favorite perfumes — i’ve waxed poetic about it for years.

also lovely is his musk re-invention, which smells to me not of musk but like a forest in the fall (mushrooms, tinge of smoke and all.)

would love to try this vanilla offering of his (and *must* try the cumming scent.
i know i will love it.)

  • Normally am not too excited about anything citrusy and LOVE vanilla so I am thinking I would really like this one. thanks for the drawing.

  • Jasmin and Castoreum make me run…as quickly as i can. Gingerbread has been one of my favorites from CBIH, its not too sweet as some may suspect, its lovely during the colder weather. This one sounds nice, so i definitely would love to try it.

  • Tuberose as a main note usually gets me running, but as I know tastes fluctuate, I’ll keep my heart/nose open…

This resinous, smoky vanilla by CB sounds wonderful, would love to try it!

  • Yum! Thanks for the review and the draw!

I have a sample of musk reinvention that I really like–but I also sniffed black march and burning leaves and enjoyed them. Actually, I adore vanilla, especially in conjunction with resins (but also milky-sweet) so if I tried this is would probably be my favorite!

Notes that make me run away: Ylang ylang, tuberose, that aquatic marine/melon/cucumber synthetic thing that was really popular in everything from deoderants to lotions to perfumes… just. no.

  • Butter makes me run! I love vanilla and am looking forward to this.

I have a few of CB’s scents – I love Fire from Heaven especially but still have many to try.

    Great review, Mark!

  • There are so many wonderful CB scents, but Russian Caravan Tea is a belove favorite on a chilly winter’s evening. Mmm…

  • I love Walking in the Air and this review just convinced me to order a 2 ml of 7 Billion Hearts to wear on days when the clean chill of WITA isn’t quite what I’m going for (though it usually is). Thanks!
