New Fragrance Review: Atelier Cologne Citron D’Erable (Jerome Epinette) + Sephora Canada Exclusive Draw

The latest offering from Atelier Cologne is a delicious and surprising combination of  lemon and maple. Atelier Cologne Citron d’Erable was released exclusively in Canada at Sephora, and was inspired by the “Temps de Sucres” or as we say “Sugaring off”, which is when the sap of our majestic maple trees is collected, to later become the Canadian national treasure….maple syrup. It was a summer launch to coincide with Canada Day, July 1 and it’s simply delicious.

The lemon-maple aspect is actually not entirely unexpected, at least in the world of food. Think delicious homemade crepes with powdered sugar, lemon and maple syrup. My mouth is watering at the thought. However Atelier Cologne did not go all lemon foody dessert with Citron d’Erable, they went all woodsy. The lemon-maple combination is totally rare in perfume. I love the softly sweet scent of maple syrup, and there is a woodsy undertone to that fragrance that actually makes it a natural for perfume.

On first sniff, I get lemon, blackcurrant and a tiny touch of eucalyptus. The blackcurrant helps add a deep forest vibe and the entire combination is almost pine-y.  And it’s not just maple syrup I smell – it’s the whole tree. I smell woods and leaves, a sort of rich arboreal illusion, kept light thanks to the beautiful lemon and mandarin fruity lightness. As a kid who grew up in Canada spending my summers at camp, the smell of the woods is buried deep in my olfactory memory. I can feel the soft pine needles under my feet, and smell the soft sweet fragrance of the maple leaves on the ground. This would be in the fall, when the trees have shed their leaves. It is an unmistakable scent, and distinctly Canadian. However, we have no lemons in our Canadian Shield wilderness, and this is where the magic happens in Citron d’Erable. The lemon is like a ray of yellow sunshine, ensuring that our maple trees live in an eternal summer, their sweetness going on and on….

Glamping Tent

It makes me think of “glamping”, the name for the whole anti-camping movement that combines glamour with camping. No tents or sleeping bags, just luxury accommodations in the woods – all of the fresh air without the crappy night’s sleep on the ground. The glamper is more of a jet-setter meets gypsy, ready for travel and adventure, but demanding luxury and comfort. There is most definitely an elegance to Citron d’Erable, and I’m definitely sleeping on high thread count sheets while glamping in the woods in this gorgeous scent. So I picture the gypsetter – someone driven to the gypsy lifestyle, the modern nomad, ready to go anywhere anytime, like a modern bohemian. No fancy hotels for the gypsetter, but giant canvas tent with teak floors, fringed blankets and maybe even a chef. A girl can dream, right?

I imagine the gypsetter, after a day in the woods, maybe hiking, maybe even creating an avant garde piece of art involving pressed leaves. The sun has set, the giant bonfire is roaring away, with maple, cedar and pine burning away and scenting the air. The gypsetter and their friends cuddle together in their Hudson Bay blanket, as the woods are cold when the sun goes down. The incredible artist Buffy Sainte Marie is there, and she is singing Take My Hand For Awhile, while the gypsetters are sipping a delicious snifter of Lemoncello, dreaming of their next adventure.

Atelier Cologne Citron d’Erable looks like a proper tribute to Canada. I like the fact it has Blackcurrant and together with eucalyptus, it may remind you of taking a long morning walk amid maple trees. I have not been to Canada but I may enjoy major cities such as Toronto and Montreal more when I do visit because they have active metropolitan cultures. My favorite Atelier cologne is Orange Sanguine. Thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Since as it says above lemon-maple is rare in perfume that makes me want to smell this all the more. Eucalyptus can be a nice note to me so things interesting it’s included. My favorite AT is currently Silver Iris.I don’t glamp or camp. I do like Montreal. 🙂 usa

I had forgotten about glamping being a thing. Sounds silly to me, though I would like to have someone along on a camping trip to do the cooking and tidying up.
I have yet to smell any perfume with a maple syrup note that wasn’t tooth-achingly sweet, but cut with lemon and with an herbal/woody edge it might be gorgeous. I’m in the US and have never visited Canada, and I have quite a few Atelier Colognes but Trefle Pur is the one I reach for most often.

  • I would love to smell this perfume! One of my earliest memories if the scent of fallen maple leaves. i grew up in the UP of Michigan and have visited Salute St. Marie. My experiences with camping have all been rough, not glam.I currently live in Tucson, Arizona.

  • Maple and citrus in a fragrance–intriguing. If Jerome Epinette is the nose, it must be wonderful. I’ve never been glamping; my favorite place in Canada is Montreal. My favorite Atelier/Epinette fragrance is Mandarine Glaciale. US.

  • What a great tribute to Canada to coincide with Canada Day!! I’m intrigued by the maple, lemon, and eucalyptus. That’s definitely a first and I can’t wait to try this one. I definitely want to try gypsetting as well. My favorites from this line are: TrefIe Pur, Sous le toit de Paris, Mistral Patchouli, Oolang Infini, and Oud Saphir. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I enjoyed Jane’s connection between this new fragrance’s “rich arboreal illusion” and the forests she remembers from childhood. Citron d’Erable reminds me of the lemon-sugar waffles I ate as a child. Freshly cooked waffles were topped with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice over pearl sugar crystals, sometimes topped with real maple syrup and whipped cream.

I’ve never gone glamping, but I’ve enjoyed camping in tents and motor homes. My favorite place in Canada is the Mount Royal Park in Montreal. I live in the US. I love several perfumes from Atelier Cologne. At the moment I most enjoy Oolang Infini.

  • From reading the above article this new fragrance sounds unique. For sure the maple syrup note is a bit unique. If the dry down focuses more on woodsy than the lemon that’s fine too. Oolang Infini and Cedrat Envirant are two from this line I keep coming back to. USA

  • I love the images that Jane conveyed in her review, especially the bonfire and staying warm under the Hudson Bay blanket. I’ve never been glam ping, but I have been to Canada, to Toronto and to Victoria Island. I love Atelier’s Pomelo Paradis. I live in the USA.

Really nice review Jane, and your mention of Buffy Sainte Marie made me outlandishly happy. And nostalgic. Took me back to my childhood and listening to my mom’s records by her and being mesmerized by the photos of her exotic Indian beauty. I hope I get to smell this strange and enticing concoction of maple and lemon sometime.

  • Great review Jane!! This was my favorite part.

I’ve never been Glamping. Have been to Canada many times, very hard to pick a favorite spot, it’s so beautiful.
My favorite Atelier is probably Orange Sanguine. I live in the U.S. Thanks much for the giveaway!!

  • I live in Ontario so this post was very special as a Canadian thanks Atelier Cologne for creating a perfume for us
I didn’t know what glamping is but I do go camping especially in our pukaskwa national park year round
My favorite Atelier Cologne is Mistral Patchouli

  • So Canada! I am not a fan of camping only because I get really scared of being in a tent – I do love getting out of the city and the quiet and how clean everything smells. So, glamping may be an option for me. I am Canadian so I think I know what Atelier was channeling here, and I like it. Great line. My current fave of theirs is their Rose Anemone, mm mm. Thanks for the draw!

Hahaha! “Glamping” is definitely a new term that I’ve never heard before! No, I’ve never glamped and can’t remember the last time I went camping. It is fun, though!
I LOVE the idea of combining lemon and maple together. I think lemon notes really amp up foody notes.
My favorite place in Canada is Toronto. I been there several times and once stayed there for 6 weeks to make a film. I always said that if I could move anywhere, it would be Toronto. It’s such a great place!
    I live in the U.S.

  • Welcome back to CaFleureBon as a guest contributor Jane. I loved the place that this took her, through deep memories and glorious childhood times… I have a deep appreciation for Citron and this one sounds like a delightfully sweet combo.
Glamping, no never out west we rough it. At this time in my life I look forward to a Glamping trip. Never been to Canada but would love to view the Northern Lights from Churichill, Manitoba. My current loves from Atelier Cologne are Bergamote Soleil & Philtre Ceylan I can’t seem to get enough of either.
    I am in the US.

Love the idea of this scent and the review! I’m thrilled to hear it went in a woodsy way vs. an overtly “foody” way. When delicious and savory ingredients are given a more natural and aromatic treatment vs. being “sugared up,” I am also intrigued! I’m a big camper and have done plenty of non-glamorous camping. I have done some hikes up in New Hampshire taking advantage of the AMC hut system, where you get a hot meal prepared for you up in the mountains and a bunk bed, while you can still go on a long and tortuous hike during the day! I’ve only been to cities in Canada–Vancouver and Montreal. Loved them both, but Montreal might edge out Vancouver for the franco-fan in me, though Vancouver’s proximity to nature is gorgeous. I’ve been a fan of Atelier from their initial releases–at first because of the way they created lasting and weighty citruses, and now because they’re expanding their repertoire. Rose Anonyme was a favorite–a well-done version of a familiar theme. I also love the violet one they did for Galaries Lafayette (forget the name). I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Ooh, this sounds really wonderful – I love the idea of a non-gourmand maple scent. Maple has been a scent I’ve been seeking after recently trying something that smelled like maple syrup, so I’m very curious about this. I’ve never glamped, or camped, but have enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Canada. My dad always played a tournament in Kamloops, and I really like Victoria and Vancouver as well. My favorite Atelier is probably Philtre Ceylan. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

I’m so excited to hear that the scent of the forest accompanies the lemon and maple. I didn’t know what to expect when I first read about it, but the scent sounds incredible, unusual, and I’m absolutely dying to try it. The comparison to glamping is right up my alley, too–I’ve never gone, but I haaaate regular camping. I’m in the U.S. and while I haven’t spent much time visiting our neighbors to the north I loved the time I spent in Montreal and Toronto. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Oh wow, I just loved reading these comments! Thank you everyone for your kind words and I’m so glad you shared my experience xo

  • Camden Snyder says:

I love the introduction of your expectations of the fragrance and that you then quickly go in the other direction with what it actually smelled like. Great review!

  • I’m a Québecoise, so I totally identify with the nostalgic sugaring off in the woods vibe going on here. I’ve never gone glamping, but love the woods and hate sleeping on the ground in a tent, so it seems perfect for me! I usually settle for a cabin when I can find one. It’s so nice that Atelier Cologne made a Canadian scent. We so often feel ignored in the Great White North, with our huge country and tiny population. I’d love to try it. I live in Canada, thanks.

  • I very much enjoyed the description of the underneath of the forest that was on the review. Living in rural NE Canada, it is always a treat to see something developed with us in mind.
Non-gourmand maple – mmmmmm. Add the lemon, and I am intrigued. I have done tons of camping, but never glamping, although that sounds more fun that pottying in the woods.
My fave Atelier is a layering of Orange Sanguine and Vanille Insensee. It creates a very sexy creamsicle scent.

  • I love the description of lemon and maple, but I’m glad to hear the tone is more woody than gourmet. Atelier comes out with some interesting stuff. My son lived iin St. John’s Newfoundland for awhile and loved it, but got transferred before I could get there to see him. I would say my favorite Canadian place is Vancouver Island, specifically Tofino. It’s a beautiful country. I like glamping and did it in India once. My favorite Atelier is Vanille Insensee or Rose Anemone. I am in the USA.

  • What a great article…..not to mention its about a CANADIAN exclusive! Cause seriously how often do we Canadians get any fragrance exclusives.
I am a massive fan of Atelier with Figuier Ardent being my current fave and signature scent for the warmer weather.
This scent sounds very intriguing…maple and lemon although very different notes sound like they will come together for an extremely unique fragrance.
My fave part of the artice was the portrait that was painted in the final paragraph. I am very much a fragrance memory guy and the picture painted about after a hike sitting around a fire etc really rang through as I love our grand outdoors here in Canada.

Having lived in BC and ONtario and now in Nova Scotia it is nearly impossible to pick my favorite place. however Sitting on the lake in the Kwarthas at night around a fire enjoying the company of family and friends is a place I could spend every single night and be very very happy.

Thanks a million for this chance!
