New Fragrance Review:  Aroma M Perfumes Voluptuous Nostalgia (Maria McElroy) + A Scent Track for Sophia Lauren

Pane, amore e...,film del 1955 diretto da Dino Risi.Sophia Loren Mambo Italiano

Pane, amore e…, 1959  film directed by Dino Risi: Sophia Loren Mambo Italiano

I’m a sucker for old movies.  The ones filmed on esoteric film stock like Kinetoscope!, or SuperDeluxe-O-Vision!, where every frame is saturated in soft, pastel colors and the plot is watchably romantic.  These films are always shot in a country where you long to be, but somehow is always out of reach.  Places like Rome, Cannes and Naples, where   Sophia Loren dance on moonlit cobblestone streets, her dress catching the wind.

But I’m not in Italy, with no plans to go, sadly.  But I do have the new release from Maria McElroy of Aroma M Perfumes,  Voluptuous Nostalgia, which might be the next best thing.  Voluptuous Nostalgia instantly paints your world in Technicolor washes, with each moment cast in a bright and breezy hue.  It’s built on a captivating violet and amber combination wherein both notes are intriguingly uplifted rather than turning powdery and dully sweet.  The effect is stunning – Voluptuous Nostalgia is a very aptly-named scent, because if a young lad might come across a whiff of this while travelling in a foreign country, well it might haunt him a good long while.  The violet/amber feel is coquettish and very enticing – in short, catnip for the menfolk.   It’s a perfume with a very retro feel, but in all the best ways a demure, feminine but sweetly sensual fragrance can be.   A woman who wears this scent feels like she can take on the world – provided the world is filled with Dean Martin’s music, Vespas, and late-afternoon Southern Italian sunshine.

Voluptuous Nostalgia also has a more modern, floral side – namely with the inclusion of a delicious gardenia and muguet opening that is to perfume what bright yellow sunlight is to a kitchen window.  This perfume begins with an abundance of floral joy that is immediately uplifting and playful, and draws you in with a wink and a flash of leg, before the more serious and sensuous violet/amber feel kicks in.  The opening notes are flirtatious and bright, and mask the serious commitment that young lad will have to come up with later on as this scent develops.

But perhaps the best thing about Voluptuous Nostalgia is its texture.  Aroma M perfumes all seem to carry this absolutely exquisite hand to them – like the hand found in a fine silk scarf.  There’s a soft, sheer slip in the feel of this perfume as you wear it that is absolutely gorgeous. And this silken quality is what I most admire in Aroma M perfumes – they literally drape around the wearer, rather than blast aggressively off the skin or retreat into introverted, sullen skin scents.   There’s an elegance in the wearing of Voluptuous Nostalgia that is entirely compelling and unique.  Maria McElroy’s release of Geisha Amber Rouge from 2011 has this same, quiet, silky sophistication.

Voluptuous Nostalgia’s presence is in keeping with old, foreign movies also – the fragrance lasts for several hours and entertains you with its retro, coquettish charm just long enough for you to be smitten, but not bored.  Like all the sweet summer girls skipping down the side streets in Italy, Voluptuous Nostalgia knows well that the best memories are the fleeting ones.   Voluptuous Nostalgia is a scent made to lose yourself in, and it doesn’t matter how long the daydream lasts when it’s this much fun.   This perfume isn’t for operatically-long and tortured romances, just for those stolen moments when the sun pops out from behind a cloud and turns the world into your own, private foreign movie

Author’s Note:  Aroma M is celebrating their 21st Anniversary as a perfume house, and is offering Voluptuous Nostalgia at 20% off, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

  • Madeleine Gallay says:

Absolutely gorgeous shots, big screen magic in movie star days.
Voluptuous Nostalgia is such a perfect happy name for those vavavoom days and a coquettish lasts long enough to be smitten is happy too.

    Love the reviews. Thank you.

  • I have to admit I have not seen a single movie starring Sofia Loren. I have seen few classic movies but do plan to explore them more in the future now that my interest in classical film era has significantly increased over the last few years. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US.

  • I’ve seen parts of countless movies with Sophia Loren (my dad loves the old movies), but I haven’t really seen any enough to pick a favorite. I’ve never tried an Aroma M perfume, but I’ve read so many great things. I love the mention of the texture of Aroma M perfumes, and the technicolor hues. Reading the review makes me nostalgic for something I never had! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • Hmmm, can’t recall watching a Sophia Loren movie, strangely enough. I have known aroma m for a long time. When I first got interested in perfumes I sent for her sample of oils. I was so excited to receive an exquisite package, filled with vials wrapped in beautiful Japanese papers. The perfumes inside were just as beautiful and they all carried a strong Japanese-style DNA to my nose. My favorite is Geisha Pink, for it’s piquant tart candied opening. I would love to try this new one. It is the only one of Aroma M’s I have not tried. Thanks for the draw. USA>

  • Ah, Sophia! A friend has a story about going to a black tie event, which was attended by Sophia Loren as the guest of honor. He saw her in the elevator and expressed his admiration. He was stunned when she asked him to accompany her into the room. She took his arm and he escorted her to the table of honor. He said she was beautiful and gracious and that he was awestruck and proud as a peacock. He kept saying to himself: I’m escorting Sophia Loren!

Two Women and Marriage, Italian Style are two of my favorite Loren movies.

One of my favorite Aroma M fragrances is Geisha Nobara-Cha

Thanks so much for the opportunity. I am in the U.S.

  • I have not seen any of the classic Sophia Loren movies, only Grumpy Old Men. I thought she was still stunning in that movie. I do want to watch some of the classics, but I feel that they need to be savoured.

I am not familiar with Aroma M fragrances, but I adore all of the elements in Voluptuous Nostalgia, so it has piqued my curiosity. Thank you for the opportunity to possibly win a sample!

I am a registered reader in Canada.

  • I love Aroma M’s ‘Geisha O-Cha’, it sounds really interesting, the green tea element is a great piece. My favorite Sophia Loren film is ‘Houseboat’! It’s so cute and sweet! And Voluptuous Nostalgia sounds amazing. I’m in the USA [in NY].

  • I like the movie “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. However I have yet to smell any M perfumes. The photo above looks a lot like Clark Gable not Cary Grant. US

  • My favorite is “Marriage Italian Style”. I love Sofia’s look I was so feminine and classy. “Nostalia” this is exactly what I associate when I see the old movies and pictures. The name of this perfume is perfectly matched. I have the US address.

  • Love Sophia Loren! My favorite of her films (hard to choose I must say) is Five Miles to Midnight. I saw it on the Classic Movie Channel and while this movie didn’t receive commercial or critical success, I really enjoyed it! I love the unexpected, completely “off” chemistry between Anthony Perkins (Norman Bates!!) and the beautiful Sophia Loren. I also love the Parisian locations.

I’ve been hearing so much about Aroma M, but have yet to try this line. Maria is one of the first niche/perfumers I heard about and I love the Japanese influences and the beautiful design of her perfumes.

I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • I don’t think I’ve watched any of her moviesm it was a bit before my time. However I think she’s an incredible person. I’ve heard of this house but haven’t tried any fragrances from them. Thanks for the draw and I’m in Canada!

  • My favorite movie featuring Sophia Loren is Nine. I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing an Aroma M perfume.

  • I love Houseboat. I think it’s sucha great movie. I haven’t tried an Aroma M perfume, but I definitely will in the future. I’m a Canadian reader.

  • I have to chime in to say how vividly I remember watching El Cid with my high school Spanish classmates. Sophia Loren is an amazing actress and, as my grandfather said, a Lady with a Capital L. 🙂
