NEW FRAGRANCE REVIEW ANGEL EDT by Thierry Mugler “Subdued Sensuality” + 2.7 oz Refillable Flacon Draw

Eva Mendes in an Angel visual

The term “love it or hate it” can be a bit overused, and in my mind mostly applies to people’s reactions to black licorice and calves’ liver. In the fragrance world, one perfume stands out as a true “love it or hate it” scent: Thierry Mugler’s Angel Eau de Parfum, launched in 1992 and created by Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin whose new star is Eva Mendes. Recognized as one of the first true gourmand scents and emulated by many, Angel’s odd combination of traditional and foody notes appalled some but also won the hearts and noses of millions. My preference for wearing Angel EDP is as a cool weather scent, lightly applied.

When Mugler announced the new Angel Eau de Toilette, I wasn’t sure why they had bothered. Wasn’t there already some kind of “Angel Lite” out there – Innocent or Eau de Star? But, as an Angel fan, I sought out a sample and tried it out.

Angel EDT opens brightly, with an uplifting hit of crisp fruity bergamot and berry notes.  An undercurrent of the signature Angel aroma is present, but with a much smoother and lighter presentation than the EDP. I have applied, and now reapplied, and am very much enjoying not only the shimmering opening, but the sweet, slightly candied, sensual drydown.  If you are recoiling in horror to read that I applied and then reapplied, fear not, this is a softer, more subdued Angel.

1992- 1993 Collection Maison Thierry Mugler @ Patrice Stable

If Angel EDP has been difficult for you to wear, I highly encourage you to try the EDT, especially if you are attracted to Angel but find it to be too much. Even if you don’t like Angel, give this a go – you might be pleasantly surprised, especially if you are looking for something that can be worn through the seasons that has some personality without being too potent.

This fragrance is composed of notes of bergamot, pink peppercorn, praline, red berries, cedar, patchouli, vanilla and white musk and was created by noted perfumer Amandine Marie (who also created one of my favorite scents for MDCI, Peche Cardinale).

My favorite TM fragrance is Angel..It’s a scent to wear
    Anytime and anywhere…pretty,pretty!!

  • Awesome draw, my favorite TM is actually from the Miroir/Mirror Collection and is called Mirror of Desires. Love that line. Would definitely like to give the EDT a try since i have never tried this one 🙂 Thanks for the great draw.

  • do you think that original lovers of Angel will love this too?

i adore Angel, my favorite TM frag … of course, i’m curious about the EDT and the bottle is very cool looking!

  • Claudia I love the miroir d’envies and there was a spécial édition Angel liqueur in 2006
I am anxious to try this because I like many of amandine Marie perfumes

  • Michelyn i love the Envies too, i think most of the ones in the Miroir line a truly nice. Some day i will try the Oud one from the Miroir line. Tama did a great job 🙂

  • I’ve been an Angel fangirl since it first came out. Brought a sample of it with me on my first trip to Paris in 1993. Bought a bottle when I returned to the States. Whenever I wear it, it reminds me of that trip. Would love to try the EDT…thank you for the draw!

  • *************Ode To Angel*******************
This is the second Thierry Mugler draw that I can recall this year. I am a devout Angel lover. Have been since the nineties. I went from young lady to woman in that scent. It took me from college into career days. It will always hold a very special place in my heart and my mind. I can recognize it in a room of ladies and make my way over to her to pay her a compliment. My little sister wore Angel Innocent because I bought her first bottle and it was love at first sniff fo her too. I have been lucky to have owned many little “stars” and of course the huge refillable bottle. My stars always leaked:( Even the lotion was sheer glamour on my body and in my air.
My love affair with Angel will never end. But sadly, my husband has issues with it so I no longer own it. I used to have a small star that I kept and secretly wore when he was out of town but now that secret stash is also depleted. In a way though, its almost good the Angel was banned by my hubby because it was for that very reason that my collection began to once again grow and branch out. When I had to break up with Angel, I needed new scents it forced me to get back in the game so to speak.
Why do I want to win this EDT?? Well, because of your description! It sounds like something my husband would be able to handle. I have secretly been hoping for him to come around and be with me on the Angel issue but by the sounds of it especially based on the fact you ::reapplied:: it…this might be my reunion with my beloved Angel 🙂 thanks guys xo

  • My favorite Mugler is Violet Angel. I really want to win this Angel EDT because I really cannot wear Angel at all, but I wish that I could. This one may actually work for me!

  • This is an opportunity. I haven’t got to try other creations by TM except for Womanity. It’s a very unusual fragrance that shocks the wearer after few minutes of spraying as the cavier emerges so prominently but doesn’t stay that long all the same. If one is able to give some time it settles really beautifully on the skin. On the whole, I like Womanity.

  • I love Alien… Alien reintroduced me to floral frags again after years of refusing to wear florals because of headaches. I love it! It is such a beautiful fragrance…

  • Dar, Angel is a classic!
Claudia, I think I only have a sample of one of the Miroires – I really need to explore those.
Shannon, if you love Angel, this would be a nice change – worth a try, for sure.
    Michelyn, the Liqueur is divine.
Karin, you are a true fan – good luck!
Feliciag, I hope you get a chance to test this one out on your hubby! You never know.
Tourbillion, I have the Angel Un Lys and like that one very much. If you can wear the Violet, I’ll bet you can wear this.
naheed: Womanity is wonderful!! Weird, but good.
Tamara, the only Alien I have enjoyed was one of the Sunessences. I keep sniffing though – actually I got a little bit of the Alien EDT to try.

  • of course Angel here! It doesn’t have any competitors. Thank you! Btw, Angel Rose is also good, on the 2nd place.

  • I love the original Angel. I don’t get to wear it too often (it’s not office-appropriate in my opinion) but I still like it a lot.
Recently I tried new Angel EdT and I liked it. If I win it, I’ll wear it (still not to the office). If I won’t…. It’s hard for me to justify the purchase of a FB so I’ll keep postponing… So I decided to try my luck in the draw.

  • I dislike Angel, and all its flanker so far: Innocent, Star, etc.
So I don’t know what to expect of this EDT. I may like it, but I guess that it will have the Angel signature and I won’t be able to stand it.

My favorite fragrance by Thierry Mugler is Cologne, but Alien and even Womanity are nice.

I would love to try Angel EDT just out of curiosity. Please, enter me in the draw 🙂 Thanks!

  • I remember when Angel came out in the early 90s. I received a sample from a SA at Saks in NYC and fell instantly in love with it. It was on my list of “must have” perfumes. Yet, I never purchased it! After a number of years I became ambivalent about wanting it because so many of my perfume wearing friends expressed a great dislike for it. I would love to win the EDT as it sounds like a “tamer” version of the original and would give me the chance to try Angel once again without offending my “perfume hating” co-worker and allergy-prone husband (who dislikes much of what I want to wear 🙁 ). Thanks for the draw!

  • I’ve never tried Angel, or even sniffed it for that matter. Actually I’ve never tried any Thierry Mugler fragrance. The closest I came was sniffing the top of a Womanity bottle at the duty free at the airport once. LOL I’ve always heard great things about Alien and wondered what it would be like. Looking forward to hopefully experiencing a taste of what Angel is all about.

  • Good old Angel EdP is my favorite, because my kids always loved it on me, so it brings back lots of good memories. I do apply very lightly, sometimes, just a little of the dusting powder.

  • I love Angel but have always found the EDP to be too strong. Even though I love it, it sparks either love or hate from others, so I don’t wear it often. I’d love to try the EDT since it sounds much more wearable. My favorite TM is Angel, but I also love the coffret that accompanied Perfume the movie a few years back. Not very wearable, but a lovely work of art.

  • I’d love to try the Miroir series- Desires sounds like it would be my favorite. I am interested in Angel edt because this amazing review makes it sound so delicious! Thanks for the draw.

  • I just recently became an Angel fan after years of not really knowing what to think of this scent. But about 3 month ago I splurged on a small star & have been wearing it a lot lately (as we didn’t have much of a summer & so it didn’t feel overwhelmingly strong like it can when wearing it on a hot day).
I also love Alien a lot which was the first TM scent I bought.

Now of course I’d love to get to know Angel EdT because you made it sound delicious & I could imagine it’ll be great for those days when you want something lighter, but still full of personality 🙂

  • I shy away from the Angel edp…for all the right reasons. You have heightened my interest in trying the edt dear Tama!!
    Great perfume review !

  • My favorite Mugler is Alien Liqueur de Parfum, cause it’s super-sexy and dramatic like Alien but warm and boozy. My mom’ favorite perfume is Angel, and I understand the appeal, and see how others find it gorgeous, but I can’t stand patchouli 90% of the time. Innocent and Eau de Star are too sweet and synthetic for me–Alien is synthetic too, but synthetic in an attractive, interesting way that brings the word “modern” to mind instead. Angel EDT sounds like something I could wear though, I wold love to give it a shot!

  • I have never tried Angel, but I have smelled it on 2 friends, and I love it on them, although it smells slightly sweeter on one of the girls. I am looking for a new fall fragrance, as my Coco is almost drained.( sob) I would love to try this newer, gentler Angel. Pleae enter me in draw. Thank you.

  • I love Angel on paper. A true complex gourmand, many different notes connecting with each other into a delicious concoction. On my skin, I only get chocolate and patchouli. I wish it smelled on my skin the same way it did on paper!

My favorite Mugler is Angel Pivoine from the Garden of stars series.

Please, enter me in the draw! I am very interested in new Angel EDT. I am hoping that it would play with my skin nicer than the original Angel which only showed my skin two of its wonderful facets.

  • Alicia, the Angel Rose is very nice.
Undina, you might be able to wear this one to the office, you never know.
Isa, I hope you get a chance to try this – maybe this will be the One.
Brigitte, Like I say, Angel is love-hate. I hope this one will be more tolerable for the folks around you.
Perilously Pale, Mugler is an interesting line to explore, even if just for the quality of the work.
Masha, I’ll be Angel powder is wonderful! Will have to seek some out.
Lisa A, I would love to get my hands on one of those coffrets – I found out about it all too late…
Holly F, I really like the Miroir bottles, too.
Tabatha, sounds like my review did exactly what it was supposed to do!
Ragna, let me know what you think!
kastehelmi, I have heard good things about that Alien Liqueur. I hope Angel EDT works for you!
Maureen, oh my sister wore Coco – it is a good one. I think this EDT would be nice in any season.
Warum, I hope Angel EDT works on your skin – I think a lot of people amp the chocolate and patchouli in Angel EDP. Maybe since this has more vanilla and no chocolate listed that won’t happen.

  • The first TM scent I remember smelling was Alien. I thought it was fantastic – like nothing else out there. I owned a teensy bottle now long gone. I like Angel , too, but don’t own any, so this draw is perfect!

  • Angel is one of my all-time favorites, but I rarely wear it. Need to break it out more now I’m working from home! I’d love to try this — I think the Thierry Mugler line, flankers and all, is very well done.

  • I’m very curious about this edt! I do like Alien, although my ability to wear it is variable. Reading your review of the edt has piqued my interest for sure. I favorite TM scent right now is hands down Sunessence Bleu Lagoon. I just adore the burst of tartness and the wonderful patchouli and warm sweet resin that supports it. Yum. Thanks for the chance.

  • Charlotte, maybe you need anew bottle of Alien!
Elisa, if you are working at home, go for it!!
    Lori- thanks!
Avon lady, Bleu Lagon is wonderful stuff, I agree.

    Good luck, everyone!

  • I’ve never worn Angel personally, but do enjoy smelling it on others ! Personally, I’d say I have a soft spot for Mugler’s patchouli rich “Ice*Men” , wich is hands down the best patchouli scent for summer. (Not normaly a note I’d associate with a summery frag !)
And I’m, it’s seems in the minority (?), of those who actually enjoyed “Womanity”.
However my absolute “holy-grail” Mugler , for which I’d probably trade my first born for ;o), would be the “Le Parfum Coffret” ! ~ (It’s my largest perfume regret :o( … )

  • Ice*Man – I think Womanity is wonderful (I own it), but it’s a difficult one for some, just like Angel. That sweet/salt combo is a bit different. I have to say it’s one of my favorite bottles! That sort of alien/Deco look is so cool.

I have never smelled Ice*Men – will have to remedy.

  • Michelle Hunt says:

Angel would be my favorite, for the memory of discovery of something so different and special and so new in the nineties. I wore it but found it to be wearing me unless I applied it with the lightest, slightest touch. I think I might really enjoy a lighter version!

  • Man’s Angel is one of my all time favorites.
It can be interpreted as an unisex scent, and
In my opinion is far better done than it’s female
Counterpart. The new edt to me sounds inviting enough.

  • Sonia, worth a try!
Michelle, I think there are some who could take a lesson from you – a light touch is best.
    Goran!!! Thanks for your comment.

  • My favorite by Mugler would be the Angel! Handsdown! I have only smelled Mugler Fragrances at perfume counters. Everything Thierry Mugler touches turns into pure art. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like having a walk through his house!

The only reason I do not have any of them is because Mugler is so darn expensive… I am not at the point in my life where I can whip out 200 dollars for a fragrance. Me and my fiance are Just starting out in life. All the fragrances I currently own I have either won or purchased as impressions with the exception of a “Beyonce Heat” That I paid cash for.

I do not want a impression of any Mugler Fragrances, I want the real thing 🙂 If I won this it would completely destroy the fragrances I currently own. It would be my first “epic” DESIGNER fragrance.

I believe I should win this because I deserve a break! I have always put others first… Family, Friends, & even strangers. One day I hope to be a fragrance collector and dedicate my free time to reviewing them! It would truly be a blessing to say that my first epic designer fragrance I ever owned was by Mugler! I love Thierry Mugler, It would mean so much to me because he IS one of my all time favorite designers! In my opinion and probably many others, Thierry is an ICON of the fashion industry!

Thank you for holding this amazing opportunity!

  • Me wantsssss! My favorite TM is, no wait, it isn’t fair, there are two of them – Angel and A*Men in equal measure. Angel for me is a masterpiece of perfumery and one of my most favorite perfumes ever. A*Men I’m wearing today as it happens – a good omen perhaps? 😉 I want to try and own the EDT simply because I have tried all the TM fragrances and flankers available to me. And why not, my A*Men and Cologne bottles are in dire need of some female company 🙂
Thanks to Tama for giving us a taste of the new EDT!!

  • Story of my life, a day late, and a dollar short! When I first met Angel Ilived in Germany in the Army and I could wear it as we were located on a longitude that was equivilant to northere Canada. Now I wear is 1 -2 days out of the year as I live in Florida, my home, and it is to heave for use year round. I have just discovered the ‘summer flankers” Sunessence (2009) Bleu lagon (2010) On the way with a tracking number, and 2011 (L’Ocean D’Argent’) and I can gloriously drenc myself in my divine Angel again. (Call me common however this is my No.5, or my Shalimar). I am dying to try the new EDT. I think it will work for Florida as well. I hae already sent the Mugler people and Idea for the 2012 Summer flanker. Maybey it;s not to late for this draw! many many Thanks, even if it is too late. Pace & Love Anastasia
