One of my earliest scent memories is the aroma of bay rum that my grandfather wore. I did some research and the story behind this popular concoction is that sailors in the 16th century didn’t bathe much, in fact they really stank and to mask the scent of their unwashed bodies, they would rub bay leaves on their skin to release the fragrant oil. Sometime later, the bay leaves were steeped in fermented molasses and cane sugar we know as rum. From the18th century Colonial East Indies spice route to the twenty-two distilleries located on the East Coast of the British Colonies, Newport Rhode Island was once known as the rum capital of the world. Natural Perfumer Charna Ethier debuts Bay Rum Cologne for men, a nod to this heritage, made with locally distilled rum, fresh lime, allspice, bay, sea spray, and soft floral notes of jasmine and ylang ylang. Each flask of her artisan Bay Rum cologne is bottled with a West Indian bay leaf which continues to infuse the fragrance with its exotic spicy aroma. Manly yes, but I'll wear it too!
