New Fragrance: Guerlain Paris Shanghai Les Voyages Olfactifs 05

Guerlain introduces Shanghai the fifth perfume in its “A City, A Fragrance” collection. In the 1920s and 30s Shanghai was nicknamed “the Paris of the Orient.” Today, Shanghai remains a city where nothing is taboo and everything is possible. This, coupled with its sophisticated and subversive lifestyle, makes it a city well worth encapsulating in a fragrance.

Shanghai is classified as a woody floral fragrance: The initial impression is a sweet freshness: an almond accord, more gourmet than gourmand, combined with a hint of aniseed. The heart is a blend of creamy, powdery and floral notes: ylang-ylang, orange blossom and jasmine, with hints of iris and delicately sophisticated mimosa. This is underscored by three woody notes: cedar, patchouli and, most noticeably, sandalwood—offset by a whisper of vanilla.  The perfumer is in house nose Thierry Wasser.

The bottle is designed by Serge Mansau and  comes in a 100 ml travel size. On the front, the number that corresponds to the journey, 05 for Shanghai. On the back, is a line drawing representing the city’s most emblematic site – the famous Pearl Tower.

 Les Voyages Olfactifs:

Moscow-  This fragrance  draws its inspiration from the shopping arcades of the GUM,  the Red Square, the Botanical Gardens. The  metamorphosis of a capital that embraces new modernity. Pine needle, absinthe, plum, red currant, bergamot, lemon, tonka bean, vanilla and white musk. Moscow 01 is symbolized by the drawing of the Kremlin

New York- A sparkling and sweet woody oriental. Uptown and Downtown, Wall Street, Broadway, Fifth Avenue, Little Italy, Chinatown all play a role in creating the joyful frenzy, melting pot atmosphere of New York that is filled with energy. Bergamot, cinnamon, cardamom, cedar and vanilla celebrate this energy in New York 02

Tokyo- Green and floral, fresh and delicate. Hibiya Park, Ginza, tea tasting in a teahouse.Tradition and modernism co-exist with boldness and contrast. A culture and civilization shock. Green tea, jasmine, violet and Hinoki cypress combine to create Tokyo 03, signified on the bottle by the skyscrapers of Shinjuku.

London- A slightly sweet fragrance with floral and fruity notes that shifts between the scent of spring flowers and tangy sweets. A blend of eccentricity and classicism, London 04 is comprised of evanescent roses, the sweet-smelling lawns of Kensington Gardens, violet, rhubarb and mild spices

I just re-read that last bit and realized it won’t be available until October. Maybe they’ll have a tester?

  • Ccc according to the official Guerlain press release it is 100 ml and we always use the official press release as a source
But I am going to email corporate and make sure

  • It’s quite lovely. Like a memory of Shanghai in the 30’s actually, as if one of the chanteuses from that era has just left a room in a house in the French Concession and left a lingering trace of Apres l’Ondee in the long wooden corridor. Only a brief first sniff but I am impressed – looks like Mr. Wasser’s visit to Shanghai a couple of years back made the right impression. I would describe it as quite romantic, very much Guerlain but a memory from another era.
