NEW FRAGRANCE 1000 Flowers Fleur No. 1 “Gardening at Night” + REM Draw

John Michael Stipe

I was fortunate to go to graduate school at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA from 1981-1984. I started classes in the middle of September of ’81 and in my first week in town I was directed to this repurposed train station called Tyrone’s OC which was the best music venue in town. I was really enjoying the vibe of the place when the band finally took the stage. A very skinny man took the mike and started to sing in a sort of intermittently decipherable mumble. From the first song until the final note of the final encore, which if my memory still functions was a cover of the Bay City Rollers “Saturday Night” I was pretty sure I was watching a band that would do big things. That band was REM and it turns out that feeling was right.

In all forms of art it is a special thrill when you find someone you think is going to have a special career and when it comes to perfume I think I might have found a similar precocious talent-Jessica September Buchanan. Based on the early work she has shown me I certainly believe she is a perfumer of the highest quality. I met her in a much different milieu than a refurbished train station. Our first contact came at Sniffapalooza Spring Fling 2010 at the Jo Malone counter. She was talking about her time in Grasse and all she was learning by being there. I introduced myself and she gently shook my hand and told me her name, Jessica September Buchanan. It wouldn’t be until the next day when she debuted her first fragrance Reglisse Noire that I would realize her talent. I’ve raved about Reglisse Noire and it was one of my top fragrances of 2010 but the question always remains can an artist achieve success again and again. Ms. Buchanan has released her second fragrance Fleur No. 1 and I am very happy to say this again displays her ability to coax unexpected facets out of notes and themes that not every perfumer is able to do.

Ms. Buchanan classifies Fleur No. 1 as a fresh green floral and while that is an accurate description it is about as accurate a description as calling REM a rock band. The label doesn’t begin to do justice to the experience. Fleur No. 1 is the latest in a line of green fragrances this year as it seems many perfumers have discovered the joys of galbanum. Ms. Buchanan also uses galbanum in her green fragrance but I find her use of it to be extremely skillful. Most of the other green fragrances contain a huge almost overpowering slug of galbanum. Ms. Buchanan’s trust in her composing skills allow the galbanum to be the first among equals and as a result create a green harmonic almost all of the other green fragrances this year lack. The galbanum in Fleur No. 1 has a complex and complementary role to play and it does it well.

In the beginning moments of Fleur No. 1 the galbanum is there but almost immediately it is joined by the woody green floral aspects of magnolia. By using magnolia as the opening partner Ms. Buchanan allows for the woodiness of the magnolia to create a foundation for the galbanum to rest upon. The heart increases the floral quotient with narcissus, hyacinth, violet, and orris. All four of these notes add a floralcy which allows for the galbanum to now provide a green foundation for them to contrast with. The heart of Fleur No. 1 is as good a green accord as I have encountered this year. The base finds new complements in pine and a damp earth accord for the galbanum. The pine adds a lightly resinous quality while the damp earth accord is very reminiscent of the one found in Demeter Dirt. In Fleur No. 1 it, no pun intended, grounds the final stage of this fragrance appropriately.

Fleur No. 1 has average longevity and average sillage.

Like the best artists Ms. Buchanan has been taking her time and making sure the compositions she releases are what she wants them to be. I admire an artist that takes their time in the pursuit of their vision and Ms. Buchanan certainly seems to fall into that category. Thankfully, I don’t think it will be a year before we see her next new fragrance because she has already communicated to me she is in the final stages of a fragrance for Fall. Until then I think I’ll put REM on shuffle on my iPod and ponder the nature of talent in its infancy.

Disclosure: This review was based on a preview sample provided by 1000 Flowers.

My favorite R.E.M songs I’ll Take the Rain and At My Most Beautiful, great songs.

  • I don’t listen to REM. maybe I should? for me it was ‘discovering’ Norah Jones Come away with me and lenny kravitz’s let love rule. The perfumer was Michel Roudnitska in 2002, who is now our Contributor Emeritus

  • My top REM song is Near Wild Heaven, but there are so many I adore. Will look forward to the launch of Fleur no 1 – sounds great.

  • I lived in Athens, 1980-1983, and danced at REM’s debut at Tyrone’s. Favorite REM song: toss-up between Talk About the Passion and Flowers of Guatemala. I love Demeter Dirt — throw in pine, florals, and galbanum, and I’m there.

  • I’ve been a huge fan of REM since their first album and have most of their records/cd’s!
I also love fragrances that contain galbanum, so I really should try Fleur No 1. Reglisse Noire sounds interesting too

wow this dates me but I saw REM’s first out-of-town gig in Carrboro NC. have loved the band ever since. fave song is Gardening at Night. musical recent discovery Serge Chaloff/recent artist discovery Mark Bradford. Please enter me in the drawing. Thanks!

  • Thank you so much Mark, for this wonderful review. I love and am honoured by the parallel you have drawn with REM. Pouring our passion into what we love can yield great results. As for the notes in Fleur Nº1, the wet earth accord is achieved through quite a high dose of distilled orris root…. to yield that damp earth vegetal note kissed with violets. xo

  • Thanx Mark for a cool review. My REM story involves when I was A&M records East Coast A&R head. Our in-house photographer some how was friends with the band and asked me to see their first NY show. Could not make it and the rest is history (timing is everything)! They ended up signed to IRS records (which we distributed) which was a far better place for them to launch (college cred). To be honest, they probably were a bit too raw for A&M so, a it was not the end of the world that I missed it. Still, would have liked to have been witness (as future fan) and say I saw them before they were signed.

  • Marks very cool review made me want to discover Jessica’s wonderful creations and reminded me of the feeling one gets when a new delicious delight of the earth is discovered, a resin, an oil, something deep down in an old container and when its opened the beauty wafts out..what a joy.and over to REM-Everybody Hurts-I really want this!

  • My favorito REM song is “The great beyond”, for the movie Man on the moon.
I have been fascinated with that song since I listened to it for the fisrt time on the radio.

Thanks for this drawing. I would love to try Fleure No. 1 🙂

Great article from a LONGTIME REM fan. Since I love SO MANY of their songs, I am going to mention Fall On Me here because it was my REM “gateway” song – when Lifes Rich Pageant came out in 1986 and I heard this song, that was the moment that I felll for REM big- time! Fleur No 1 aso sounds absolutely stunning and I would love to be in the running to receive a sample of it! Thanks for the great blog!

  • I love REM and I love this article. Losing my Religion is probably my favourite song of all time. But I’ll pick E-Bow the Letter and Country Feedback for this purpose.

  • Mary Beth says:

I know nothing about REM (Sorry, Mark!!), but the fragrance sounds delightful. Any floral swathed in green of any shade gets bumped to the top of the to-try list.

  • An aquatically-oriented lass, REM’S “Nightswimming” reliably brings me to a melancholy peace.

  • I really loved that Jessica September Buchanan dedicated The First Flower to her mother, and said that she taught her to love nature. What a beautiful legacy. As for REM, I have many favorites; Don’t Go Back To Rockville, Orange Crush, and Stand are among them, but It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) is the one that takes me back the most.

  • Your review is making me crave this fragrance! And all of the talk of REM reminds me of car trips with my son, when he first entered his teenage years and loved the same music that I did. We both adored Orange Crush, Losing My Religion and Man On the Moon. Oh and Shiny Happy People. And many more.

  • I’m a long time REM fan. I used to listen to the Automatic for the people on tape, and this was my first REM album. Later my husband who lived in Athens GA in just the right time introduced me to early REM and I loved it even more. How about Box Cars are Turning Out of Town as my fave.

I always appreciate perfume/music connections. Thanks, Mark!

Losing My Religion is my favorite REM song, and quite a visually striking video too.

On JSB’s blog I enjoyed the article on happening upon a tree in full bloom, and the delight of smelling something beautiful in nature when you are not expecting it.
