Montale Black Aoud Review (2006) + Rose Oud Perfection Draw

Photo by Alex Musgrave aka The Silver Fox©

What makes a fragrance memorable? One that stands the test of time! There are 1000s of niche, mainstream and designer Ouds on the market and many contain rose, as they are a complementary pairing. Perhaps it all started in 2006, before Rose-Oud perfumes were ubiquitous with Montale Black Aoud, one of the first  niche house to use Aoud in 2003 , a year after YSL M7 debuted and  the craze for Oud in Western perfumery began. Montale Black Aoud takes Rose-Oud fragrances to another level with the use of dry patchouli.

Montale Black Aoud Fragrance Review | Full Bottle USA Giveaway 🌹🌹🌹

In fact Sr. Contributor Sebastian Jara believes Montale Black Aoud is the best Rose-Oud he has smelt (and detects a hint of saffron although the note isn’t listed). –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • I’ve always loved fragrances and I’m new to the fragrance community. I’ve been collecting fragrances for about a year now and have only heard about this house. Sebastian is very passionate about fragrances and that’s what gets me hyped up to watch his videos. He does a great job and makes you want to buy every fragrance he likes like this one. It would be fantastic if you would pick me as the winner so I can finally get me nose on this fragrance. Thanks a bunch, Edward Ramos II

  • Derek Greene says:

Very interested in owning g this. I have intense cafe and starry nights which smell great and last a long time. Thank you for this opportunity W324

  • Sebastian says this is one of the best rose-oud perfumes he has tried and it has extra kick through the addition of patchouli. I do like rose-oud perfumes and have many since rose-oud combination is the most popular. My first oud perfume was YSL M7 first version. I am in US.

  • I have tested some Montale fragrances an are all great, like to try this one. I know how Rose and Patchouli are on the top of Sebastian’s taste, so I’m sure this is a great fragrance

  • Kyle Stevens says:

I’ve been wanting to try this, I have Mancera Black to Black. I’m a huge fan of oud and rose

  • I like how Sebastian describes the notes of the perfume and the pricing of it!! I really love rose and oud perfumes because they compliment each other and my fav oud perfume is oudwood by TomFord.
    Thank you
    I’m from CA USA

  • Sebastian was to the point. I’ve heard about Montale and it’s fine fragrances, but wasn’t sure about the investment. His reassurance as made me want to add this fragrance to my collection.

  • Perfect description of the fragrance, Sebastian! I almost smelled it!
So I will definitely check rose oud perfumes and of course Black Aoud.

  • Sounds amazing! I have no experience with Montale, nor do I own any oud fragrances, but the ouds and rose/oud combos I have smelled in the past have really intrigued me, and I would love to get one! Pretty much the only reason I haven’t gotten one already is that I’m a poor grad student. In regards to this specific perfume, it sounds great, and I would really be interested to see if I could also pick up the saffron note that Sebastian says he notices, despite the fact that they don’t have it listed. I am a MAJOR lover of saffron, so if I also got the same vibe as Sebastian, this sounds incredible for me!
Thanks for the giveaway, I’m from Michigan, USA.

  • Derodrick Rhodes says:

I always love and watch every Sebastian review. I’m very interested in getting a sample of this particular Montale fragrance. I definitely would love to win a full bottle of this too… Texas, USA

  • Just Add Light says:

My first oud was actually 24 Gold by Scentstory when it was overhyped way back when, but I really wouldn’t consider it a true oud. M7 was definitely the first that I wore regularly, and still love to this day (the original and first reform [black label] only). Only started experimenting with rose ouds late last year, so my palette is still evolving; but from what Sebastian mentioned about the added patchouli, smooth blending and dry nature of Black Aoud, I’m stoked to give it a go. In fact, my Honey Aoud kicks some serious nasal butt and I can already imagine layering the two. Mega-beast. That’ll be the new thing. lol NC-USA.

  • Sebastian aptly describes why this is a classic. It’s the prototype for all the rose and oud scents which filled up the western market in the last 10 years.
I love rose and oud scents. I think they go so nicely together.
I dont remember what my first oud scent was. Probably some small attar. It took me a while to figure out what the oud note actually smelled like though.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I always enjoy Sebastain’s fragrance reviews. He describes them in a way that you can almost smell it while listening to his review. I’ve never tried an oud frag but have been wanting to get one. The strength of the Black Aoud sounds like a great performer. I also a fan of leathrr frags and Sebastain mentioned he grt a leather vibe to this as well. Thanks for the opportunity to make Montale Black Aoud my first oud perfume!

  • No experience with the House of Montale. Enjoyed the review, it was short and sweet. Sebastian really likes this one so I would like to get a chance to try and own a bottle one day. Not much going on with this fragrance but really good. Thanks for the giveaway. U.S

  • Montale is a great house….loved the review with the mention of the hidden note of saffron. Love Aoud + Rose combo. Great to the point review.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • Very limited experience with this house, although I do love Chocolate Greedy. And with the “sister” company Mancera, I love Red Tobacco. Sebastian has a great take on this Montale that makes me want to try it!

  • I love the sound of this fragrance, Sebastian made it sound really good I know I will love this one patchouli and oud are my favorite, thank you Sebastian

  • This sounds like a wonderful rose, oud, patchouli fragrance per Sebastian. I love Armani Privé Rose d’Arabie for a rose/oud combo. Also, I wear Across Sands by Maison Martin Margiela. I haven’t tried anything from Montale as of yet. Thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • Aoud Queen Roses by Montale is already a favorite of mine so I can’t imagine not loving Black Aoud too. Sebastian’s tastes I think are similar to mine and I love the way he describes fragrances. He’s experienced and knowledgeable, but also very down-to-earth, good natured and relatable. The patchouli and possibility of saffron, LOVE rose and saffron too, make this sound very inviting. I’d love to win a bottle! My first rose oud perfume was Rose Oud by Kilian. I’m from Atlanta, GA.

  • I’m interested in owning my first cologne from this house I’ve smell one sample from this house and loved it but the sample was not properly labeled it only said Montale Parisvon it..

  • TetsuigaJones says:

Yooooooooo! SEBASTIAN MY BRO!!! (***Oud***) Awesome Holiday twist to the video on Your YouTube Channel… (***Rose***)Great time to give an awesome gift to a huge fan of both you and Ashley!!! Happy Holidays to you both. I’m Familiar with Montales brand as a powerhouse Frag. I have montales santal Wood and Myyyyyyy Gawwwwwd. (***Patchouli***) was potent to my virgin nose as that was the first and only Montale fragrance I’ve smelled. Also my number one lady killer with the most beastly of reactions lol made my crush get some major whiplash! Anyway rose is an awesome note not wide in the mens fragrances world and never smelled a legitimate oud ever. I would love love LUUUUV to have this bottle if I dont win I’m afraid I’m gonna have to tell Ashley on you… Btw I have framed words of this post as the smell of black oud using some of the notes you described in the big and subtle ways you explained it. Shout me out in your next video and have Ashley blow us a big fat kiss lol thanks Sebastian and happy Holidays.

  • TetsuigaJones says:

Btw Good luck to the other contestants. If you guys haven’t already I would suggest smelling (cremieux 38) A nice smelling vanilla with a bit of a fresh powdered smell. If a college Degree had a smell it would be this for men. Very cheap

  • TetsuigaJones says:

AnyBody ever smell Cologne from Co Bigelow Barber? Fantastico in many ,others very much to be desired both highend and low end products

  • middleagedandmixed says:

Sebastian’s description of Black Aoud is a non animalic oud, dry rose, sexy patchouli fragrance — what’s not to love? I am a fan of rose oud and am surprised I haven’t tried this one yet. As for my first oud fragrance, that would be Tom Ford’s Oud Wood. Happy holidays!

  • I loved his checklist. Rose. Check. Oud. Check. Patchouli. Check. LOL. Yes, I love rose oud combos. I honestly don’t remember my first, but Calligraphy Rose was one of the first for sure.

  • I don’t love a rose scent singular or dedicated but when put with oud I go crazy. Byredo Oud Immortel May have been one of my first not with rose Trish M has a black rose oud I like but this sounds waaay better esp if a hint of saffron too which I adore. Sebastian’s review was enjoyable and to the point concise I can imagine how delish it is and I’d live to try it. Merry Xmas and Happy New Years fr Seattle

  • prasida.perfume says:

I love how excited Sebastian is about this fragrance! I’m interested in experiencing how patchouli impacts the rose and oud. My first rose oud fragrance was M. Micallef Rose Aoud, but I have to say that Delina Exclusif is currently my favorite rose oud.

  • I like blue oud by montale but my favorite rose oud is by Nicolai and my first was Killian. Like the idea there’s a dry patchouli too

  • Very enjoyable and informative review. It’s not often that Seb gets really enthused with a fragrance, but this one is evident. The use of patchouli mixed with oud and rose petals sounds like something worth checking out this winter. Montales are heavy hitters and the one that I own, Honey Aoud, can clear an elevator. I hope to be able to try this one soon. Thanks for throwing this giveaway. Happy Holidays and have a safe and enjoyable New Years. Cheers from CT.

  • Philippe Bertrand says:

Great review like always! Very informative , and passionate! I would love to win that bottle!!!!!! Happy holidays from Atlanta.

  • I’ve been interested in getting to know more of Montale’s lineup, but there’s just so many (especially ouds) that it’s hard to know where to start. Thanks to Sebastian, maybe this can be where I start.

  • I liked sebastian’s review as always. He gives a great overview and then talk about the notes, then the feeling. I love his style and this fragrance. I love this fragrance and sampled it not too long ago. I find it a masculine aoud and mysterious. I have never owned a aoud and am hoping to win. I think aoud and rose needs a third element for balance and personality. And this one works for me.

  • Have always love Sebastians videos and was excited to see this review. I do not live in an area that has Black Aoud and was excited about the possibility of trying it! I am not a fragrance head yet though I do own a couple bottles from reviews on this channel. Having a bottle of this would be really great. Keep up making these great videos I always get excited to see new ones.

  • Great review Sebastian. I love your take on different fragrances. I to love heavy dark fragrance . Just love the A8EKsmell off oud and just the right mix of patueli and throw in some rose. I am interested in a bottle.
    Thank you.

  • michaelprince83 says:

Great review Sebastian! I have never tried Montale Black Aoud, but I enjoy Oud, Rose, and Patchouli fragrances. Especially when the Oud isn’t Animalic. As always great content. Please put me down for the giveaway. Happy Holidays!

  • yungcherrypops says:

I really enjoy Montale’s Cafe Rose so I’d love to have another Montale in my collection! I haven’t tried many rose/oud combos, but I love Oud Ispahan by Dior, and it was also my first rose/oud fragrance. Enjoyed Sebastian’s review as always as it was short, sweet, and to the point. My YouTube username is polaroid caesar and I’m in Alabama, USA.

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s note breakdown with heavy emphasis on the patchouli in Black Aoud. It has been years since I’ve smelled this fragrance, but I remembered how surprised I was since this fragrance was as much as a patchouli fragrance as oud and rose. I love the rose oud combination, and the patchouli adds a perfect ‘dirtiness’ and ‘grittiness’ to the rose oud pairing. My first oud perfume was the original YSL M7 when it launched in the early 2000s. M7 started my oud journey and I always had Black Aoud on my wish list, but have yet to add it to my collection. I am excited at this opportunity to hopefully win and finally be able to wear Black Aoud often!

  • Stephen Hoefler says:

As always, great review Sebastian! I haven’t tried any Montale fragrances but I enjoy Oud and Rose fragrances. I’ve bought several fragrances upon your suggestion and I think this one would work well for me and would round out my collection. In particular, I always appreciate your attention to detail and how you describe different situations where one might want to wear this. Unlike many other reviewers, you take a lot of time discussing the fragrance, how they develop and who they’re appropriate for. While yes those videos are long, I feel much more confident in my purchases after listening to what you have to say. My first oud fragrance was John Varvatos Oud and I recently acquired Banan Republic Vintage 17. Please enter me for the full bottle giveaway. Thank you so much and Happy Holidays!

  • I have decants of several of Montale fragrances love them all especially the aoud and rose and aoud leather and aoud cuir d Arabia would love a full bottle of black.Sebastian always does a great job of describing the fragrances plus I share his taste in perfume, always entertaining and informative

  • I love Sebastian’s break down of the notes Oud, Rose and Patchouli. He really gives a nice description of the fragrance and how it will smell. I have never smelled this fragrance from Montale but would love to own this one.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Sebastián s review perfect as usual and I love oud and rose fragances
My fist one and My fav os From Mancera.
    Míami Florida Thanks

  • I’ve never tried Rose oud but Sebastian’s review has me excited to sample this one. His love for the fragrance really comes through in his review. I don’t have any straight up oud fragrances either, I’m just beginning to dip my toe in that category.

  • We all know Sebastian loves his patchouli, and I’m glad he says there’s a big dose of it, rather than being dominated by just the rose and oud. I am a big fan of rose/oud fragrances, my first being Roja Dove Aoud. Cheers from Indiana, USA.

  • Dry rose , patchouli , big in your face oud , just a bit powdery …WOW … add some leather and we do have a fragrance obviously Sebastian loves.I do love all the notes , plus i’m into big and bold heavy fragrances so i have to sample Black Aoud .
My firsts Oud fragrance? Oud Wood by Tom Ford but NOT the current formulation! Back in the days the bottle was not black, but dark brow like most Prive’s.Also the juice was deeper and more potent compared to what they sell now.
I’ve never sampled Black Aoud , but i do own 3 Montale fragrances Chocolate Greedy , Oudmazing and Vanilla Extasy.
    Tnx for the giveaway
    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
    Cheers from VA

  • Sebastian’s enthusiasm about this Montale has me curious, rose-ouds are both classic and seemed intensely trendy for a while so it means something when one really stands apart from the pack. JHaG Midnight Oud is my first and still my favorite of the genre, it has both darkness and radiance and it smells like it should be worn on a night out on the town. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • I love Roses and Oud. Listening to Sebastian, I would love to try Black oud. I have tried Montale cafe intense, lovely. I think my first rose oud fragrance I have sampled is rose satin oud by MFK. Thank you for the chance, I live in California.

  • I really love montale fragrances at least the 7 that I have tried with intense cafe being one of my most favorite fragrances ever. I haven’t tried black oud yet but it definitely sounds amazing from sebastian’s description. I know this has been around for awhile and it gets alot of love in the fragrance community and I can’t wait to try it. I love a bold oud rose especially if it is heavy on the rose and patchouli is one of my favorite notes. My favorite rose oud is probably oud silk mood by mfk its is just so rose heavy with a good dose of oud that last forever on skin and projects all day. Thanks for the giveaway keep up the good work! I am in the USA in AZ.

  • Love Sebastian’s enthusiasm and his detailed descriptions. My 1st oud was the YSL M7. Thanks for the draw.

  • Sebastian’s review was straight to point. The notes of patch, rose, and oud seems very straightforward, but Sebastian enthusiasm has sparked my interest. If have not experienced anything for the Montale House, but I have heard of its great sillage. My first experience with oud was unbeknownst to me. It was burning along with other woods and resins in bakhoor local Arabic bookstore. My first experience wearing an oud based fragrance was TF Noir de Noir. Thanks California

  • Sebastian is the best in describing the scent profile. I love to watch his reviews. I like oud rose combo as well. My first oud fragrance was 24 gold by Scent Story.

  • Great video from Sebastian as always. I remember few years ago i used to really hate the oud and rose notes 🙂 especially blended togheter. I guess after u experience more and more fragrances, the nose is developing and leveling up. Now i love the rose-oud combination 🙂 and i love montale black aoud since i had the chance to sample it at my local Sephora; a true beast i would say. Thanks for the draw, Oakland USA.

  • Montale is one of my favorite houses – atm i do own 10 100ml bottles , but to be honest i’ve never smelled Black Aoud.Montale’s portfolio is so vast ~150 , and it’s not posible to keep up with all they got.
As far as i know Black Aoud is one of the most popular fragrances from the brand , and a bestseller for a reason. If Sebastian claims it’s one of the best rose , patch and oud combo’s…i need to sample it asap.Bold statement no doubt .
Sure i love rose and oud fragrances – one of the best combination in the fragrance world ONLY IF it’s done the right way.
Vintage M7 by YSL was my first clash with oud based fragrance….good old days.
I follow all of you on IG
    Thank you for the draw.

  • Sebastian love his review for this. I’m new to niche fragrances. This sounds wonderful. Love the bottle and notes. I have heard of this fragrance house. OUD AND Rose I’m sure it smells great. Thank you for a chance to win.
    @maryjeannyc NYC

  • Hey guys, I’ve always loved designer fragrances and I’m just getting introduced to the niche world. I’ve yet to try anything with a rose/oud combination so I would love to get my nose on this. Thanks for the opportunity to win this bottle!

  • Wow, this sounds good! I love rose and oud together! I have a few Montales on my wishlist. I’ve never owned a full bottle of theirs before. But this one sounds like a must have. I own Velvet Rose Oud by Jo Malone. It’s my favorite rose oud perfume. I really need to get Black Oud now! Not to mention, how much I enjoy Sebastian’s reviews. So whenever he reviews something, I feel compelled to buy it right away!
    I live in the USA.

  • I cannot wait to try this Montale Black Aoud. Thank you for the review. I just found this channel and can’t wait to watch all the videos.

    happy holidays!

  • Thanks for another great review, Sebastian! I love that Sebastian featured an old release, always nice to see reviews of not-so-new niche releases. I’m partial to rose so I’m sure I’ll love this Montale’s a Black Aoud. My first oud fragrance was MFK’s Oud Satin Mood. Thanks for this opportunity. – California, USA

  • -I enjoyed the checklist at the start Oud? CHECK! Rose? CHECK! I also like the way Sebastian keeps things on an even keel and how he always tries to start a dialog and communicate with his viewers. I also like how he keeps them brief.

-Rose and Oud is a match made in heaven but as much as I like them both (and in tandem) I am a bit burnt out on mukhallats-but this WAS one of the first. As my mom is fond of saying “I like it just fine, …I just don’t want a steady diet of it!” 😀

-First oud I smelled was either: NY Oud (Bond No.9), Royal Oud (CREED) or Black Aoud’s alterego Aoud White (MONTALE). The AW mini travel spray came same day as the decants of the other two. Needless to say I was in agar-nirvana! The first oud I ever reviewed was PHOENICIA PERFUMES RealOUD. The first oud scent I bought was MIDNIGHT by House of Matriarch from the ACHTUNG! Collection.

I love it when perfume lovers across the blogosphere unite to do things like this (and all those groovy compilations and creative projects! Thanks for video, writing and the great prize; not to mention always having new content 24/7/365! Love all you guys…

  • If one of best,if not the best fragrance aficionados out there is so confident saying Black Aoud is one the best oud , patchouli and rose concoctions … must be the truth. Picked up my interest no doubt- I’ll be visiting Twistedlily in 2 weeks and I’m about to spray it in skin.Everybody loves rose perfumes . My first oud perfume? If decants count Noir de Noir Tom Ford , but full bottle Patch Flash by the great Andy Tauer . Thank you for the generosity . USA

  • I love rose oud perfumes based on the reviews I’ve seen but I have never owned any. As always, Sebastian’s reviews are very interesting and one can tell he’s passionate about what he does. His reviews are not too long but they contain all the information one needs.

    I live in California.

  • My skin eat perfume love, so I would love to try this long-lasting fragrance. I haven’t gotten a compliment or even a comment on a perfume I’ve worn in such a long time so many this would be good for me to try. I love rose and oud, so I am sure I’d like this. The dry aspect really appeals to me. The first oud fragrance I’ve ever tried is Tom Ford’s.
    I love in the USA.

  • Hi,

Thank you for organizing this giveaway.
Sebastian was very clear in describing this fragrance, and made me want to try it.
I have Zegna Indonesian Oud, and really love it.
    I live in IL, USA.
    Thank you!

  • Dry rose and oud and the best compliment getter! That’s what I want. I have not heard a compliment in years from any of my fragrances. Thanks for the giveaway from the great USA.

  • Chuck Goodpaster says:

Man this sounds good!!! I love oud!! Thank you for a new fragrance and another excellent review!
