Ineke Evening Edged in Gold: Dusk Rendered Divine + Golden Dusk Draw

Last Sunday’s foray to the Elements Showcase proved to be a magnificent madhouse.

In the midst of all the olfactory brouhaha, it was a rare pleasure to indulge in conversation with lovely Ineke Rűhland.

Over the course of time, it became clear to us both that her perfume Evening Edged in Gold seemed to be under-appreciated, when viewed alongside her other work.

She thought that perhaps, it wasn’t a “big oriental”, and that that perception might have contributed to its being overlooked.

I was stymied; it didn’t make any sense at all to my nose or my heart.

And so I gently asked her, would she object to my reviewing it sometime soon?

So here we are.

Alice in Wonderland sang of the glories of the garden in “All In A Golden Afternoon”.

What a wonderful place to begin…

Ineke adores “the hunt”- searching for new, fascinating plants to embrace in her garden.

It is a horticultural heart which pulsates within this singular perfume.

The fully fragrant, exotic blooms tenderly lend their sweet voices at the close of day; both midnight candy and angel’s trumpet will only relinquish their delicious odors in early evening.

The exquisite osmanthus flower- guì huā in Chinese, meaning ‘cinnamon flower’-

Is renowned for its apricot-laden, faintly suede-like leathery aroma.

How appropriate and uncanny, that Evening Edged in Gold includes both a plum note to enhance the fruity quality -and cinnamon bark, to correlate with the spice attribute.

Saffron, most costly of spices, enters on tiptoe, so as not to disturb the delicate balance.

Her mere breath is sufficient and a welcome counterpoint to the succulent, unabashed florals that pervade this scent.

Whatever woods are present, are discretion itself, murmur-soft.

Floral Oriental is her name, and joyously so.

Softer, rounder, more gracious and subtle than any other bearing the name, I am always grateful to succumb to her fragrant caress.

She makes bedtime- and the Dreamtime-

Sweet indeed.

Many thanks, gentle Ineke.

  • Ida,
Evening Edged in Gold and Field Notes from Paris are hands down my 2 favorites from the Ineke Line Up. Its a warm and sophisticated fragrance, it has a smooth woody leathery dry down on me which i adore.

  • I really love this one, Ida! I had no idea it was considered under-appreciated, I think it's a stunner. Having just discovered the line, I find it hard to choose between it and After My Own Heart, I think it's a tie!

I tried a sample from a swap and just loved it it smells lush and is perfect for all day wear.

  • I like this one. It has so much "wide" appeal that it is disappointing that it is under-appreciated.
What I like about Evening is that it is golden, dazzling and versatile like a LBD. It can be dressed up or down.

  • I asked my husband for the Ineke sample set for Valentine's Day, and I cannot wait to explore each of these fragrances; she is a lovely woman, and all of her perfumes sounds lovely too.

  • I have the Ineke sample set.  My favorites of the line are Evenings Edged in Gold and Field Notes from Paris.  I really love the saffron note in this one.  Gilded Lily  also seems very nice.  I've just begun testing.  Beautiful bottle.

  • I have not tried all of them, but my favorite is "After my own heart". It's a perfect spring scent. I love the subtle green notes between the lilies.
I would love to be entered in this draw. Thanks, Ineke and Çafleurebon.

  • I tried her full line at Gump's in San Francisco last summer; they are very beautiful fragrances. Saffron is yet another of my favorite notes.

Thanks for the very interesting article, I like many fragrances by Ineke, but my favourite is Derring-Do, I love it!

  • I would love sampling a Ineke creation.   I have yet to try any of her fragrances!
    thank you Ida!

  • When I think of Evening Edged in Gold , I think of an upside down triangle. No clue as to why, maybe because over time it starts loud then softens down, but all perfumes do that. Yet the triangle imagery is firmly stuck. Thanks for putting up with my rambelings Ida!

I love seeing the interest !
Field Notes and Evening sing beautifully when layered 😉
Ineke is indeed a lovely woman.

  • I recently found out from a perfumista friend that midnight candy is a flower. I thought it was an accord created by the perfumer!
Saffron is a one of my favorite perfume notes so I would love a chance to try Evening Edged in Gold.
    Thank you!

  • I have the Ineke sample set (which in itself is lovely lovely!) and Evening is my favorite! I also enjoy Chemical Bonding and loved Derring Do! so much that I bought a full bottle! Which promptly fell to the bathrooom floor and shattered…however, for a week I had the best smelling bathroom on the block!

  • i've just come to appreciate osmanthus in perfume (oh, the heavenly apricot-note) and would love to smell it here.

  • I really like Field Notes from Paris, I'd love to win this one too. Please enter my name in the draw.
    Thanks!

  • I own a bottle of After My Own Heart, and I find myself craving it in the springtime. But right now, in the midst of all this blusteriness, my favorite would be Field Notes from Paris – it's OK to have your favorite change because of the season, right? Evening Edged in Gold talks to me in the summertime, on those languid, warm evenings.
Like others have already mentioned, I also want to acknowledge the fabulous and beautiful touches Ineke adds to her line: the sampler set is gorgeous, and I love the bottles and their packaging. Especially thoughtful is that all her jus is clear (it's the bottles that are colored) so it won't stain clothing. Real attention to detail is a notable part of Ineke's work.

  • I don't think I've ever tried any of Ineke's perfumes, but this review makes it sound as though this might be my favorite! Please do enter me in this draw.

  • Have not yet tried Ineke's perfumes, but would love to. The statement about her garden was genius Ida,
says much about Ineke as a person. The statement was, It is a horticultural heart which pulsates within this singular perfume. Absoutely beautiful.

  • My 1st Ineke was After My Own Heart and Chemical Bonding. They are such wonderful perfumes and evoke some wonderful memories for me. All her perfumes are so thought provoking and can be worn easily by many people. I would love tosniff this Evening Edged in Gold, it sounds magnificant=)

  • I have Ineke's sampler set. It's wonderful! Even if you end up liking just one or two fragrances from the whole set it's definitely worth trying: it's presented so beautifully. And with the price of the set completely redeemable towards the FB purchase it's one of the best offers for those who cannot find it for testing in a store.
My favorite ones are Evening Edged in Gold and  Field Notes from Paris.

  • Ineke Evening Edged in Gold has been on my wish list for a long long time! I really appreciate your illustrations and am very happy to see what the perfumer herself looks like. Thanks for that. I love reading about perfumers who are so connected to real botanical materials. Please include me in the draw; I would love to win this!

  • I do love your descriptions: "saffron…enters on tiptoe", "woods are…discretion itself, murmur-soft."  I think softer floral orientals are often overlooked. I would love to try this. Thanks for the pleasure of reading your review and for the draw opportunity.

  • I've never tried her work, but I would like to.  Please enter me in the draw.

    Thank you,

    Geordan

  • Oh!  How did I miss this!  Love Ineke.  Recently purchased a bottle of Field Notes From Paris for my husband…and requested a sample of Evening Edged in Gold. Beautiful!  Thanks for the draw.
