Guerlain Baiser De Russie (Thierry Wasser) 2018~Perfume Review + From Russia With Love Draw

On a recent business trip to Las Vegas, I spent a free morning in one of the city’s two Guerlain boutiques. Tucked away in a far corner of the Palazzo section of high-end retail shops in The Venetian Hotel, the small but vital Guerlain outpost sits like an enchanted jewel box of glittering gem-colored beauty and perfume products. This scented confection of a store is overseen by Guerlain Store Manager Juliette Franklin who is a veritable wealth of Guerlain information, experience and gossip. Needless to say we had a great time chatting and sniffing.

After trying many of the newer releases, the perfume that ultimately hooked me was the recently released Guerlain Baiser De Russie (Russian Kiss) by in-house perfumer Thierry Wasser, is a re-working of the much loved and much coveted 2012 discontinued “Moscow” from the “Une Ville, Une Parfum collection. Added to the Les Parisiennes Collection, Guerlain Baiser De Russie is the latest fragrance to reappear from the Guerlain vault, and this fruity-floral scent reminiscent of a Russian summer’s evening is sure to be a welcome addition to any collection.

Robert’s Grandmother Esther Roven-Tabachnikov (r.), her sister, and Mimsy their dog in the garden at their Dacha C.1877.

Guerlain Baiser De Russie is meant to convey a certain Muscovite feminine Boho-Chic,  but to me it is is  more akin to a hug from a beloved relative in the fading dusk of a warm summers evening. With its notes of pine, cranberry, plum, and tonka I see my Grandmother Esther Tabatchnikov as a young girl growing up in the countryside outside of Yekaterinoslav in the Ukraine. The sun sinks after a warm afternoon as Esther and her sister take their ease in the garden hammock at their Dacha. The woody resinous scent of pine sap and poplar, the cranberry or plum conserve used to sweeten the tea in the glasses held in silver “podstakannik”, the Russian tea-glass holders that I still have in my crystal cabinet. Slices of lemon float in the dark winey tea, and a plate of teacakes lays haphazardly on the grass beneath their feet as my Great Aunt tells my Grandmother about her classes at medical school, an unheard of honor for a young Russian girl of Jewish ancestry.

Robert's bottle of Guerlain Baiser De Russie is from the Les Parisiennes Collection

Arriving in the now-iconic bee bottle housed in a dark purple faux-leather presentation box, Guerlain Baiser De Russie is a soft buss, a quick set of “bisous bisous” on each cheek between friends on the street. Opening with a lip-smacking tart/sweet burst of citrus and stone fruit combined with a touch of heady jasmine, you’ll know right away that this is a perfume perfectly suited to the young and young-at-heart. It is flighty and flirty with a definite skew towards the feminine. The pine and sandalwood notes linger in the background giving an almost-but-not-quite fougére vibe, which makes the perfume immanently accessible for gentlemen as well. The drydown is all comfort and warmth, the classic cashmere blanket feeling of home provided by the musks, tonka and vanilla. All in all, an extremely satisfying (re)-release by Maison Guerlain. Is it groundbreaking? No. But it is delightful and beautiful and sometimes that’s enough, Da? Konechno!

Notes: Bergamot, plum, pine needle, lemon, absinthe, cranberry, jasmine petals, caramel, sandalwood, tonka bean, white musks, vanilla.

Disclosure: The perfume and opinions are my own.

  • Oh, did you go to the Guerlain Boutique? A really lovely review. Of course any Guerlain I haven’t tried, I want, but what really appeals to me in this story is a young Jewish girl following her dreams. I was left wanting to know more about her! Thank you for the draw.

  • Pine and cranberry(plum), oh my. I simply loved the picture of your grandmother and great aunt. The imagery of the dacha on a summer’s nigh sounds entrancing and just lovely. I’ve never visited a Guerlain boutique. I’m not sufficiently acquainted with all of Guerlain’s fragrances to be able to single out one to be reissued. This one sounds great. Thanks for the draw.
    I’m in the USA

  • A hug from a beloved relative…. makes me think of my grandma! I visited the Guerlain boutique in Toronto last summer and had a lovely experience. I’m not an expert in Guerlain, is Iris Ganache still available after being reintroduced? Then there is the ever changing Guet Apens, I don’t think even the latest version is still available? Would love to try Baiser de Russie. I am in the US.

Hallo, Robert’s review was wonderfully engaging…the fragrance means more to him as his ancestry is Ukranian!! Beautifully written. Yes I have had the pleasure of working for the House of Guerlain, and visiting the Las Vegas Palazzo and Bellagio boutiques. Thank you, Faery x

Thank you for the review of this one! The warm, comforting dry-down of musks, tonka, and vanilla sounds wonderful. I have an idea, in my head, of the type of fragrance you’re describing and it’s one of my favorite things about perfume – to create a virtual, comforting “hug” that stays with you for hours. Especially now, when it’s still cold and rainy outside. I’d also love to try something with cranberry, as I haven’t had the pleasure yet!

I haven’t had the chance to visit a Guerlain store, but what a treat that would be! It sounds like a blast. And, sadly, I’m not really familiar enough with any discontinued Guerlain fragrances to wish one back into existence, as I’m still fairly new to perfume.

    I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I have never been to a Guerlain store. I don’t go to Las Vegas often as I’m not a gambler (I did just purchase my first blind buy – maybe I’m a gambler after all). Next time I go there, I will stop by. The store is beautiful!! I don’t own any Guerlain, maybe I could find one that suits me at a Guerlain store as I know they carry more than my local Nordstrom’s. I agree that not all my fragrances need to be groundbreaking, sometimes just a comfort scent is enough. The cranberry is intriguing to me. Thanks for the great read!

  • I’ve never been to a Guerlain boutique although I do own several Guerlain fragrances, Would love to see Parure back from their archives. The best part of Robert’s review is the story of his Grandmother and her sister! Love these important stories and how this makes Baiser De Russie so personal for Robert. I can relate having my own personal stories. My sister and I were surprised how our childhood is filled with Russian folktales from our Mother’s mother – we didn’t know that everyone hadn’t been exposed to these rich stories! So Baiser De Russie would be potentially very personal for me as well. Thanks to everyone involved in this draw!

  • Very exciting to see a new release coming. I however hope thst this is not another sweet release from Guerlain. The opening sounds nice. Well eventually I will try to get around to sampling. When I first saw Russie I was hoping to see the word cuir also. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I’ve actually never been to a Guerlain boutique. I have very little exposure to their line of fragrances, aside from the infamous Shalimar, which I adore.

    I live in the U.S.

  • What a fantastic review especially because Robert brought his grandmother into the article. I have the Tokyo and really wanted to try Moscow, so this will be like the next best thing. I would like Guerlain to bring back original chamade
    USA

  • Oh such a beautiful review and I loved seeing your grandmother at her dacha. Plum and cranberries got my attention.
Thank you for baiser de roussie it sounds wonderful.

  • There are a lot of things I love about this review: the mixed bag of notes that come together in the end to form a “cashmere blanket” sort of scent, the “lip smacking” sweet tart opening. But my absolute favorite thing is that photo. I have some old family photos but not that old, and the clarity on this one is amazing. And it somehow made the change of countries. ..what a prize! And the fact that you know the dog’s name is Mimsy? I’m amazed. But the perfume sounds lovely too and I’d love to try it. 🙂

  • What appeals to me most about Robert’s review of Baiser De Russie is is description that “It is flighty and flirty with a definite skew towards the feminine”. That sounds like the kind of fragrance I would love to own! I have never had the pleasure to visit a Guerlain Boutique, so I wouldn’t be able to say which discontinued Guerlain fragrance I would like to see back from their archives. I’m sure they were all wonderful though!! xx

  • I really loved Moscow and kicked myself for not getting a bottle so am delighted by this release! I loved Robert’s description of his Russian relatives great aunt and grandmother. I have been able to visit the Guerlain boutique in Epcot Disney World and if one scent could be re-visited I would love to try Aqua Allegoria Ylang & Vanille. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • I haven’t been to one yet – no perfume boutiques in my city at all really. I hadn’t heard of this release but thank you for the intel . I love woody/fruity scents, and I’m hoping the the pine/fruit combo is similar to Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest. And the absinthe note is intriguing – -I love the L’Artisan renditions on that theme. I would like Guerlain to bring back Iris Ganache for sale in the US. Please enter me for the samples. I live in the US.

  • I can’t wait to experience Basier De Russie after reading the descpiption in the review. I love Robert’s description of the cashmere blanket; a fragrance that can wrap me in a fragrant comforting warmth is the best. I’ve never visited a Guerlain Boutique; however, it is on my wish list and would definitely be a highlight is I were in Vegas. I love vintage fragrances, and any of the Guerlains from the 1800s would be incredible to experience. I would love to bring back Guerlilas; could you imagine a Guerlain Lilac? Heaven!
