Fragrance Review: Rock Crystal (2005) by Olivier Durbano + Heaven and Earth Perfume Draw

“Earth’s crammed with Heaven,” wrote the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, rejoicing in the spirituality of nature. Even its subterranean depths, shrouded from sun, issue forth gemstones that magically catch and transform light.

These are the subject of jeweler and perfumer Olivier Durbano’s Parfums de Pierres Poèmes (perfumes of stones poems), which encapsulate in fragrance symbolic, visual and emotional facets of the gemstones with which he works. The first in the series, Rock Crystal, created in 2005, fuses the aromas of spiritual resins with earthbound notes of spices and woods to create a perfume that is both worldly and transcendental — and my favorite incense perfume to date.

Rock crystal, or clear quartz, occupies an extraordinary place in both spiritualism and science. Its ability to transmit energy not only as a conduit but as a source has made it part of everyday technology, and, for millennia, it has been seen as a powerful talisman by cultures the world over. It was thought by the ancient Greeks to be petrified water flowing down from Olympus; in Vedic belief, wearing white crystal could give happiness to the dead, while the Maya regarded it as a source of divine power. For Durbano, rock crystal “represents the link between man and nature, the notion of man’s place within the universe. A union of man and God.”

Rock Crystal is composed of materials that suggest the celestial and earth, conjuring both the natural world and our human attempts to summon heaven. Durbano has said he is drawn to the smells of old stones and churches and this is evident in Rock Crystal. Smoky frankincense dominates the opening but is tempered by a steely mineral note that feels elemental, chilly and almost damp. Herbaceous coriander then emerges with its perfume of soapy kaffir lime and bark, and grounds the ephemeral quality of the incense, giving it weight. The churchy frankincense remains the commanding note throughout the development of Rock Crystal; but here, the resin’s coniferous quality is enhanced by woods and moss.

While Rock Crystal’s initial effect is one of coolness, it is soon heated by anisic black pepper in its top notes as an amalgam of spices emanates in the middle stages. As the perfume develops, cumin, with its human tang of sweat, imparts an earthiness that is amplified by the warmth of benzoin, used here without a trace of its usual vanillic sweetness.  An assertive woody note also comes out in the middle stages and grows stronger as Rock Crystal dries down.

Incense smoke tendrils and the resinous arms of the forest stretch heavenward, as if seeking connection with the divine. Their fragrance gives Rock Crystal its spiritual, contemplative aura, while subtle rooty aromas of moss and vetiver and the warmth of the spices add a connection to the earth. Together, the notes merge into a perfume of dualities: both churchlike and primeval, oscillating between cool and warm, a modern translation of ancient spirituality and kinship with nature into scent.  Rock Crystal is proof that, as author Jules Renard reflected, “On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.”

NOTES: Top notes: orange flower, pepper, coriander, cardamom, cumin; middle notes: frankincense, olibanum, benzoin, myrrh, cistus; base notes: sandalwood, cedar and vetiver, everlasting flower, oakmoss, musk.

Sample of Rock Crystal from my personal collection. Opinions are my own.

  • I seems that my comment will be the first one! Nice! I hope that this will bring me some luck in this draw- thank you for it. My favourite scent from Olivier’s collection is Lapis Philosophorum. For me the most appealing thing about Lauryn;s review is those wonderful photos that captures the nature of Rock cristal. I live in EU.

For me the most appealing thing about Lauryn;s review is those wonderful photos that captures the nature of Rock cristal and also that according to Lauryn Rock Cristal is olibanum scent with woods and mosses in the back. I am a huge fan of chill perfumes and to heard that Rock Cristal is cool according to Lauryn I am more than intrested! I think that I would enjoy this duality of cool and warm. From Olivier’s line I more than love oceanic and aromatic Turquoise. I live in EU

  • Wonderful review, I very like it. I have never had a chance to try any of Olivier Durbano Perfume, but from the review Rock Crystal sounds fabulous. I would very like to try that. I live in Europe. Thank you for the chance.

  • I didn’t know Durbano did perfumes, but I love his jewellery aesthetic. Amusingly, I had a rock collection as a kid and I think my mum was always baffled that I loved the quartz crystals the best – they were the cheapest in her eyes I guess, but I loved them for their mystical potential. Lauryn’s review has turned my onto the idea of smelling “church like and primeval” – yes please; and I’m interested in the “anisic black pepper” note.

  • I’ve not tried any Durbano fragrances. This one sounds great. I like frisking ensue and incense fragrances and one with a “spiritual contemplative aura” sounds right up my proverbial alley! In the US

  • Oh, I love Rock Crystal. In my opinion it is the brighter and most sparkling incense in perfumes and I completely agree that if “on earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it”, such a wonderful scent must be one of them.

Rock Crystal is my very favorite fragrance by Durbano, followed – but not even close – by Black Tourmaline.

Lovely review and so exciting draw, thank you! I live in the EU.

This review really captured all the duality can be experienced wearing this fragrance: earth, heaven, cool, warm, church, nature. I can’t wait to try this. I’ve never tried any fragrances by Olivier Durbano.

  • I can only vaguely remember sampling Rock Crystal from my friend’s bottle, but it it a very pleasant memory. I can’t say that I experienced “a perfume of dualities: both churchlike and primeval, oscillating between cool and warm, a modern translation of ancient spirituality and kinship with nature into scent”, but I would love to.
I don’t know any other Durbano fragrances. Waiting for some more reviews!
Thank you for the draw. EU.

  • I am a big fan of incense, so I can’t stay indifferent to any fragrance like this. Especially if there is so many contrasting aspects like mineral/damp, coolness/warmth, “churchlike and primeval”. I hope the scent is as fascinating as the review! I’ve never tried any Durbano perfumes. I live in Europe.

  • I wanted to post my favorite quote from the review, but I would have to put an entire review in the comment. The notes and the description sound so beautiful. I would love to have the bottle to find all of this beauty for myself.
I have tested only Jade by Durbano and I like it very much. Thank you for the lovely review Lauryn! I live in the EU.

  • I see frankinsense and myrrh listed which I love yet have no idea how promintent they are going to be. I do like the name of this and usually I could care less about the name. The descriptive review has me hoping I’m the lucky draw winner. My favorite is the only one I have tried, Black Tourmaline. USA

This sounds like an incense scent I am looking for – intense but light, not too heavy or smoky. I’d love to try it! i haven’t tried Durbano fragrances before and I’m really excited to smell this one. Thanks for the draw! I am in the EU.

  • Nice review! I like the sound of the smoky opening. I haven’t had the chance to try any of Olivier Durbano fragrances.

Rock Crystal has lot of contrasting notes such as resins, black pepper, incense, and kaffir lime. It’s earthy elements pay tribute not only to crystals but also the ancient civilizations like Maya. my favorite from Olivier Durbano is Black Tourmaline. I am in the US.

  • I like the numerous inspirations behind the stone from which the scent took its name: “Rock crystal, or clear quartz, occupies an extraordinary place in both spiritualism and science. Its ability to transmit energy not only as a conduit but as a source has made it part of everyday technology, and, for millennia, it has been seen as a powerful talisman by cultures the world over. It was thought by the ancient Greeks to be petrified water flowing down from Olympus; in Vedic belief, wearing white crystal could give happiness to the dead, while the Maya regarded it as a source of divine power.” My perception of Rock Crystal – my favorite Durbano creation – is that it is complex and harmonious while being miraculously simple. A real piece of art. I’d love to have a bottle of it. I live in the EU.

  • “Durbano has said he is drawn to the smells of old stones and churches and this is evident in Rock Crystal” – really? I can’t smell any church – old or new – in RC, neither can I distinguish any old stones, and I’m glad, for I don’t like them. What I smell in RC is resin, resin, resin and I love it. It smells like an enormous sunny forest. Keeping my fingers crossed for winning a bottle. Greetings from Norway!

  • When I read these words as part of the description of this perfume: old stones and churches, smoky frankincense, damp, aromas of moss and vetiver, black pepper, I know I must smell it. It sounds very interesting to my nose. I haven’t tried anything from Olivier Durbano. I live in Europe.

  • Everything about this review is encouraging me to revisit Rock Crystal which I smelled many years ago. The end quote by Jules Renaud was so powerful on earth there is no heaven just pieces of it
I own two Olivier Durbano perfumes and they are so different Black Tourmaline and Heliotrope that I bough samples from luckyscebt and then full bottles
Thank you so much the writing is beautiful

The aritcle & review is marvelous and intrigue me. Rock Crystal is proof that, as author Jules Renard reflected, “On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.” is an impressive statement & summary of the perfume. The middle & Base notes of Rock Crystal are right up my alley.
The only perfume that I have & enjoying wearing from the house of Olivier Durbano is Black Tourmaline.
Thanks for the generosity & draw.

  • What a wonderful description!

“Together, the notes merge into a perfume of dualities: both churchlike and primeval, oscillating between cool and warm, a modern translation of ancient spirituality and kinship with nature into scent. Rock Crystal is proof that, as author Jules Renard reflected, “On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.”

It is not much left to say about Rock Crystal – it is exactly as described and this is why I love this fragrance. Rock Crystal and Black Tourmaline are my two favorite Durbano scents and I’d be delighted to win the bottle!

Lauryn, your review is just perfect 🙂 Thank you so much!

I love quartz jewellery. Can’t wait to experience “spiritual, contemplative aura” of Rock Crystal. I’ve always wanted to try Durbano fragrances and this would be a great opportunity. Thanks for the draw! I live in Europe.

  • I have never tried any perfume from Dubrano but I have always been curious about Black Tourmaline because the review you made 2 years ago sounded so compelling. THis Rock Cristal seems now appealing to me because “subtle rooty aromas of moss and vetiver and the warmth of the spices add a connection to the earth” 😉 I lov moss and rooty aromas, it must be a nice one 🙂 Thanks for the draw, I live in Europe.

  • I’m a big fan of Olivier Durbano’s gem’s!!! My top favorites are Black Tourmaline, Rock Chrystal and Heliotrope and i hope he will be able to find a stone to make a fragrance of that represents the indolic and dirty tuberose some day, haha!

Rock Chrystal for me is incense and earth. My nose interprets the earth-note as something like walnut or hazelnut. It’s really divine. I own it for about 4 years now and already started my third bottle, LOL! I always spray it when i need some support (bad news conversation at work) It gives me confidence and makes me feel loved and wanted.

  • I am willing to try anything with benzoin. It is a note that does well on my skin. I find his concept of concentrating on crystal stones interesting and my favorite to date has been turqoise. Thank you for an interesting review. USA

  • This was a wonderful review! I love incense fragrances and Rock Crystal sounds pretty complex and multilayered. I am intrigued by the concept of concentrating on stones and spirituality. I loved this passage: “Rock crystal, or clear quartz, occupies an extraordinary place in both spiritualism and science. Its ability to transmit energy not only as a conduit but as a source has made it part of everyday technology, and, for millennia, it has been seen as a powerful talisman by cultures the world over. • I’ve never tried any Durbano scents and this one sounds great, especially the list of my favorite notes: pepper, coriander, cardamom, cumin, frankincense, olibanum… I’ve heard so much positive opinions about this scent and I’d love to try it! I live in the EU.

  • I love the phrase about “our human attempts to summon heaven”, it’s beautiful. Would love to smell Rock Crystal and find this spiritual aspect of incense in it. My favorite Durbano perfume is Lapis Philosophorum which is also spiritual and meditative in my opinion. thank you for the draw 🙂 I’m in the EU.

  • “Rock crystal (…) occupies an extraordinary place in both spiritualism and science. Its ability to transmit energy not only as a conduit but as a source (…) has been seen as a powerful talisman by cultures the world over.” I totally agree on both levels: one is a genuine gem and second being Olivier’s eau de parfum. So for this moment I am writing in singular. Rock Cristal is very spiritual, it can be explained by origins of its name: krustallos” [κρύσταλλος] which means divine Ice, because acient Greeks believed that Rock Cristal was Ice, which has been touched by gods and for this moment on cannot melt. I have tester Rock Cristal and I have worn genuine Rock Cristal on my hand. Every moment I have spent with either of them was truly divine, bliss and spiritual. So Rock Cristal and Chrystolithe are my favorite from Olivier’s colletction. I love in EU

As I am a member of Catholic Church incens, myrrh and smoked woods are no strangers to me. I deeply love this moment when my local priest light up this lovely mix of incens, myrrh and spices( woods are coming from interior design of my local church. I believe that Rock Crystal smells in a way similiar. I would love to try it on on my skin. Smelling this divine, enlightng and calming scent must’ve been a profound expreience. I am only familiar with Black Tourmaline: it;s really nice and i quite enjoy it.

  • Wow! This fragrance seems to be very nice to my taste, resinous and smoky with a mysterious and very complex air. To be honest with you I never tested any fragrance Olivier Durbano but Rock Crystal seems to me the perfect fragrance to start exploring this brand, since love the main notes of this perfume. [Frankincense, olibanum, benzoin, myrrh]
I’m in the U.S and thanks for the draw.

  • Black tourmaline is my favourite of those I’ve tried, but this sounds much more ‘me’. Frankincense, moss and woods? Divine :). Please enter me for the draw, and sending good thought to the talented Mr Durbano for number 12!

  • Great set of notes in this one. I also love the story and inspiration for Rock Crystal. I see it as a nice date fragrance or anything that involves romance. I haven’t tried anything from this house unfortunately. I’m in Canada and thank you so much for the draw!

  • I am a HUGE fan of incense and spice, so this sounds like heaven to me! It sounds like the kind of fragrance I would spend days decoding. I’ve never had the chance to try an Olivier Durbano perfume, but would love to. I live in Canada, thank you so much for the draw.

  • I love the incense and all the spices. Rock Crystal sounds quite unique, which I love. I haven’t had a chance to get my nose on any fragrances from the house, but I surely will in the future.

I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw.

  • I found it interesting that Rock Crystal is likened to old stones and churches. I would love to have a sample of this, all the notes sound so very interesting. I do not have a favorite. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.
