Fragrance Review of Mandy Aftel’s Aftelier Cassis + Draw for Vogue.com Fave Lumiere AND Cassis Mini

As we enjoy the longest days of summer (my favorite Aftelier fragrance to wear when the heat is on), Lumiere, a sheer luminous floral, that vogue.com called ‘addictive” my thoughts turn to autumn…and to Mandy Aftel’s Cassis.

Mandy’s gift to the world of natural and fine fragrance is abundant… she is giving again. If you want to enter this seperate draw for a mini of Lumiere or Cassis please leave a comment on this site and on Mandy’s Facebook page @aftelierperfume about her new website www.aftelier.com  or why you would like to win Lumiere and Cassis.

The creation of Cassis was an aesthetic challenge for an entirely natural perfume since botanical fruit essences are rare. Mandy wanted to create a fragrance reminiscent of heavy redolent fruit and the aromas of an Autumnal landscape. A key component to the composition is the rare and fine rum co2 with its intoxicating top notes. It is the singer’s Donovan’s favorite….

Cassis evokes the trees laden with fruit and the rich autumnal colors of the harvest—– bringing to life the words of the nineteen century painter, poet and mystic William Blake:

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stained

With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit

Beneath my shady roof; there thou may’st rest,

And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,

And all the daughters of the year shall dance!

Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers

The narrow bud opens her beauties to

The sun, and love runs in her thrilling veins;

Blossoms hang round the brows of Morning, and

Flourish down the bright cheek of modest Eve,

Till clustering Summer breaks forth into singing,

And feathered clouds strew flowers round her head.

The spirits of the air live in the smells

Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round

The gardens, or sits singing in the trees.”

Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat,

Then rose, girded himself, and o’er the bleak

Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.”

—William Blake 1783

Cassis is aromatic with notes of spices and fruit:

Top Notes: blood orange, pink pepper, rum

Middle Notes: jasmine sambac absolute, black currant absolute, pimento berry absolute

Bottom Notes: Black tea absolute, cognac, patchouli

I have been following & using Mandy's fragrances for several years and I am totally enchanted by what she does. After reading her book Essence & Alchemy, I was inspired to try making my own fragrances with natural essences/oils—-that has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Experiencing each smell is like traveling to exotic places. I am a painter and each bottle is like my palette of colors…Thank you Mandy!

  • I wonder why natural fruit essences are so rare?   It seems ironic, or at least counterintuitive!  This scent is most intriguing to me, it seems very well balanced, like a wine with excellent acid structure ; )   Just another one I  need to try!  Thanks for the post, I was curious about this one…. bon weekend!

  • qwendy according to mandy “I am challenged by the fact that all fruit essences are synthetic and it is extremely difficult to create a fruity perfume with all naturals.” dje uses a rum co2

  • I love the combination of the drawings and Mandy's perfumes….I like the thought of wearing light…….

    So beautiful!

  • Hi Wendy and Debra — nice to  see you both here. Thank you too Kammi  and Michelyn for taking the time to do this.
Lumiere has both blue lotus and boronia which gives it that gossamer veil.

  • This perfume sounds lovely- dabbing drops of 'light' on my wrist sounds wonderful!!
I totally enjoyed reading Mandy's Essence and Alchemy- It inspired me to buy EOs, absolutes to start mixing and learning about these essences..
I'd love to enter the draw! Thank you!

  • LOve the sound of Cassis, black tea is such a beautiful fragrant note.
Beautiful William Blake poem you shared Michelyn.
Fig is my favourite of Mandy's collection.

  •  have been dying to try their perfume ever since I read about it in a magazine about 6 years ago as the hot new celeb perfume ( think the celeb was madonna and maybe the magazine was vogue! I bet their classes, workbooks, and oil kit would be amazing! I love that they will teach you how to make scents and actually sell the oils and botanicals…. I think it is super cool that yoga + joyful living magazine did a review on their perfume, I adore yoga!!! Pair yoga with natural perfume and its a win win for me. I love scents like fig, cacao, tuberose and linden…There aren’t enough linden scents…I used to have fresh’s linden back in the day. I would love to sniff their chocolate saffron oil….yummmmm!!! I should order a sample, actually I should order many samples!!! I love sites that offer a good sample program…would love to see a sample bundle. And the color of the trevert is georg! I also love those antique cases! I just added her books to my reading list….and I love this line ” It is my hope that people have a feeling of luxury, well-being, beauty and excitement when they wear Aftelier Perfumes.” Who doesn’t need a little luxury, well-being and beauty…..I know I could use it! I think Mandy’s site is GREAT and very user friendly!
