Fragrance Review: MEMO Paris Shams Oud (Alienor Massenet) 2011 + Lawrence of Arabia Draw

Clara Molloy photographed by Sofia Dadourian

In our Creative Directors in Perfumery Series, Clara Molloy who founded Memo Paris wrote “The name of the brand, Memo, comes from Memory. Olfaction is our most archaic sense. A fragrance can reveal you, transform you”. Mme. Molloy works in collaboration with perfumer Alienor Massenet since the brand’s inception in 2006.

Lawrence of Arabia, 1962, directed by David Lean

The word Shams is Arabic for Sun. Released in 2011, Shams Oud is one of the ‘oudiest’ ouds I have smelled, yet there is a sense of glowing brightness permeating the fragrance brought in by  ginger at the top and cypriol (similar to papyrus) lending an earthy, leathery quality not unlike vetiver. I Inhale this fragrance and imagine Peter O’Toole as T.E. Lawrence in the movie “Lawrence of Arabia” as dawn breaks in the desolate desert. This fragrance is dry, almost desiccated, but there is a sense of another time, culture  and place.

Peter O’Toole and the ‘match’ scene

There is a pivotal scene in David Lean’s classic film, when Lawrence lights a match, his face enigmatic as he lets the flame burn and then extinguishes it with his other finger. He blows out the match and smiles, “It only hurts if you let it”. Shams Oud is exotic, difficult and for those who are looking for a run-of-the mill commercial fragrance, painful.  For the rest of us, there is pleasure, as Shams Oud is of one of the best fragrances in the  Les Echappees collection.

One of my favorite offerings from this house! I only have samples of this juice as a full bottle is beyond my means currently but-frankly speaking- I am amazed this perfume has not gotten more recognition then it has. Deep, bold, and full of personality. A favorite of mine. Makes me think of the old school powerhouse fragrances of yesteryear. Which I am old enough to remember and miss! All the best and take care.

  • Great fragrance love sebastians channel and your website I especially like.how you have an ingredient and notes tab above id love to wear this scent in the coming cool weather. Id like to be entered in the drawing! Thanks!

  • GrandmaGaga says:

The juxtaposition of ginger and Oudh sounds like an interesting brighter opening and a darker heavier dry down…cozy is how Sebastian describes it. Yes, I have been to the desert…I live in the desert southwestern US and have actually had the good fortune to travel to several others including near the location where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. I have also seen the film several times. Thank you for the chance!

  • Sebastian gives the best reviews. My fragrance taste is very similar to his. I know if Sebastian reviews it, its probably a good fragrance. I am a big fan of Memo and love African Leather even though the nose is different from Shams Oud. Nonetheless, I would love to have a bottle of Shams Oud because I am a fan of heavier fragrances and notes, specifically oud. Thank you for offering.

  • I was interested to hear that Shams Oud contained a dominant ginger note. I have been very curious about Memo Paris and am very happy that they are finally available in the US. Thank you, Sebastian, and Europerfumes for this very generous offer.

  • I love the Cuirs Nomades line and find their presentations very nice as well. This is an intriguing take on Oud. Thanks for th great contest!

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

Was at Lucky Scent yesterday and I think this was one of the hundreds of frags I sniffed and tested. Oud is not my most favorite note but I don’t remember disliking any Memo Paris frags that I tested. Sebastians detailed take makes me think that this will be something that I will actually wear,if not enjoy! Hope to be lucky with this giveaway.

  • I really like Sebastian’s review, particularly how he explains the combo of ginger and oud. It sounds very intriguing to me! I’ve never tried any Memo Paris fragrances so this would be a great introduction to the house. I hope I win. Thanks for putting on this giveaway.

  • fazalcheema says:

I learned from Sebastian’s review it has interesting notes like ginger, saffron and cashmeran. As I suspected, the name shams means sun and this is kind of sunny oud creation. My fav Memo is Russian Leather. I have been through desert and it is quite a dry place. I am in the US.

  • Great review as always one the best fragrances reviewer. Love watching your reviews. Always bringing something new to the fragrance community. I don’t have anything with ginger. Love oud fragrances and beast mode. Count me in the giveaway.

  • Nice intro and great video. I like the idea of the ginger and the heavy oud and one of my favorite old movies is Lawrence of Arabia. Classic. I like Russian leather and Irish Leather and this shams sounds great. I subscribe to LFSG and your site

  • Edward Gurango says:

Ginger and oud–an intriguing combination. A full bottle giveaway? I’m in! Los Angeles, CA

  • Xavier Reynolds says:

I am not the biggest fan of oud, but the whole juxtaposition ideas of bright & dark with the ginger and oud sounds very interesting. I’d love to win a full bottle of Shams Oud. From Columbus, OH (USA).

  • Definitely sounds great. The notes are what I would definitely wear. I love bold fragrances.

  • Pete Pohlen says:

Haven’t tried any from this brand. I love Oud though, that’s why I want to win. I have been in a desert in Arizona and have not seen the movie Lawrence of Arabia.

  • Pete Pohlen says:

I like how Sebastian’s video was short and sweet and say enough to give me an idea of the fragrance.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Another fascinating review by Jara! I bought Memo Shams Oud 3 years back and is now almost empty and its so beautiful that this even not let me to try or buy other MEMO fragrances. Oud may be difficult note for some, but it is my favorite woody note in perfumery and as such I sometimes burn oud chips. So before buying another Shams Oud, I would like to try my luck by participating in the draw by giving my relative address in US.
Thanks to Europerfumes the US distributor of Memo Paris, and Cafleurebon for the opportunity.

  • I like how Sebastian broke down all the notes which made me understand this scent even more. My favorite Memo will be Shams Oud, that I got to try from a sample and fell in love with it. 🙂 So this is the reason why I would love to win. I have seen the movie several times, but have never been to a desert. I’m located in CO, USA.

    Thank you!

  • Michael McDonald says:

I enjoyed how Sebastian explained the name of the fragrance. My favorite Memo is French Leather. My interest is piqued, and I would like to win because I have been looking for a great oud fragrance. Ohio

  • I enjoyed the straightforwardness of Sebastian’s review video.

I have been in desert climate but not in a desert-desert.

Lawrence of Arabia is one of my favorite movies and it is actually in my collection.

My favorite Memo fragrance is ‘French Leather.’

I would like to win because winning is good but also because I believe I will very much enjoy Shams Oud.

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • Love Oud in al it’s forms, would love to try this one as it sounds amazing in Sebastian’s review

  • Mohammed Balsharaf says:

Thanks Cafleurebon and Sebastian for this opportunity. I really do like so many Oud fragrances designers or niche. I’ve never tried anything from Memo yet. Hopefully I can get the bottle 🙂

Great review by Sebastian short and informative as always.

    Thanks again.

  • Great review as usual by Sebastian! I can almost smell it the way he breaks it down. Great stuff. I am a fan of oud and very curious to try this one! Memo sounds like a real classy house.

  • Kyle Stevens says:

I’ve been very interested in trying an oud fragrance and I love the idea of ginger being in the mix

  • william hawkes says:

I really enjoyed Shams Oud, as well as African Leather. Thank you Cafleurebon and Sebastian for the opportunity to win the full bottle!

  • Like always Sebastian review was great and straight forward. Based on the review I am curious about the opening and ginger-oud combination. I have been and worked in real empty deserts. Still watching documentaries about deserts all over the world. Deserts are full of mysteries.
Thanks to Euro perfumes the US distributor of Memo Paris, and Cafleurebon for the opportunity. Live in Texas.

  • Yes, I have seen the movie Lawrence of Arabia and have never been to the desert though… Hmmm, an oud – cypriol – ginger fragrance… sounds divine! I always enjoy Sebastian’s videos! He mentions that the bottle of Memo Paris Shams Oud should last one a lifetime and that is why I would like to win! I have not tried any scents from the Memo Paris line… I just LOVE ouds! THANK YOU! I do live in the US

  • Awesome review Sebastian as always, interesting fragrance and interesting note combination with the oud and ginger
I would love to try it, thank you all for such opportunity, well done guys.
    Houston, TX. 77036.

  • I have not heard of this house until today. After listening to the video hear I searched out what others had to say about this Oud offering and the testimonies are glowing. From the video I learned that the cypriol note was similiar to papyrus. US

  • Daniel Bourne says:

I love oud and I love Sebastian’s videos. This video has me intrigued as I am not familiar with this particular house. I would love to win, I live in York, Maine, USA.

  • Sebastian’s review is excellent as usual. I don’t have any fragrances from this house, so it will be very interesting to try this one. Lawrence of Arabia is a brilliantly acted and directed film. I don’t think anyone has every captured the sense of the desert as David Lean did in that film. The eeriness, the stillness, its vastness, and the incredible contrasts in temperature all come alive. And yes, I have been in a desert. Thank you for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • I realize that Oud is one of the major components but I had to look up the other notes. What an amazing collection of exotic and intriguing ingredients. Another fantastic review from Sebastian! Would love to try it and I live in IL.

  • To be eligible please leave a comment ON THIS SITE with what you enjoyed about Sebastian’s YouTube review, if you have a favorite Memo Paris fragrance and why you would like to win. Have you been in a desert or seen the movie Lawrence of Arabia?

I enjoyed learning that Shams means sun!!!!! Shams Oud is my favorite. It’s the only one that I’ve sniffed. I would like to try some of the leathers but doubt it gets better than this. I want to win so I can bathe in this stuff. Yes, I’ve been to Egypt and seen Olivier many times. 🙂

  • Great review! I like Sebastian’s honesty about this fragrance being slightly difficult to wear and that it’s not an everyday kind of scent. Really gives you an idea of the grandeur quality Shams Oud has. I’ve never tried any fragrance from Memo Paris, but I’d love to win Shams Oud because I’m a big fan of both oud and ginger but have never tried a fragrance with those notes together! Also, the desert is nice but it’s a harsh environment and I’d definitely rather be at home wearing a fragrance that reminds me of the desert instead! 🙂 In the US!

  • Oud sounds very interesting.and if sebastion says its good than thats the only opinion i need.

  • Sebastian introduced me to the Memo brand and I bought one of the leathers based mainly from one of his reviews. Ginger and papyrus sound like a very interesting combination. Irish Leather is probably my fave Memo currently and am really wanting to expand my horizons and try several more of them including this one. I live near a desert and have spent several nights stargazing there and yes I have seen Lawrence of Arabia:)
Im in the USA. Thanks Cafleurebon and Sebastian

  • Cesar Caballero says:

  • I love Sebastian’s reviews. I love the way he describes fragrances and I’m a Cafleurebon reader after I saw his reviews almost two year ago. This fragrances sounds nice Memo really knows how to do fragrances. My favorite Memo fragrance is African Leather. I would love to win this fragrances because I love Oud base fragrances and this one sounds really nice.

  • doveskylark says:

I enjoy difficult fragrances. I guess they last longer, so the expensive price tag feels worth it. I am very curious about the cypriol.
I have never seen “Lawrence of Arabia.” I’ve driven through the desert in Nevada. I loved it. My favorite Memo fragrance is Irish Leather.
I live in the USA. I subscribe to Sebastian’s YouTube channel.

  • Sebastian is an exceptional reviewer. He brings the parfumers to life.
My favorite Memo is Luxor Oud.
I have seen Lawrence of Arabia . No prisoners, No prisoners.
Every moment you look at a movie on the screen cost money.
The cast, the props, the extras ,sets, stages, but look at LoA,
what’s the backdrop, desert, empty desert; and that my friends is the
    brilliance of Mr.Lean.
Lawrence/Shaw turned down medals from King George V. His work The Mint wasn’t published until 1955. Lawrence accidental death was on 1935.They got rid of him as the did with Patton.
There maybe honor among thieves , but there is none in politicians . LoA

  • Sebastian is one is the best reviewers on YT. Love his videos and how detailed they are.

I love Meno and think they have the best presentation of any nice brand. I don’t have a one fav.

I have been to the desert in America.

  • I am really interested in MEMO perfumes. I enjoy OUD perfume very much. Often times they are very dark and deep, but from his review said I feel this one is very much a unique and special one. Live in the USA and I subscribed Sabastian’s channel. =)

  • ntabassum92 says:

I like how Sebastian ties in the name of the fragrance with how it smells – I like finding out more about the inspiration for fragrances, it helps me appreciate them more. I love ginger in fragrances, and ginger oud sounds really unique. I have never tried a Memo Paris fragrance, and that is why I would like to win – also because I love oud fragrances. I have been through Arizona and Nevada – not an official desert, but desert like landscapes. Otherworldly beauty.

  • gregorysop says:

Sebastian has another winner on his LSFG video reviews. This loud scent checks all the boxes for a real winner and from what I read it is as good as it sounds. Thank you so much for the opportunity to try this amazing fragrance and for all you have done to bring niche-like frags to light for those of us unlucky enough to live outside of civilization.
    from USA

  • Thanks for the contest giveaway. I always enjoy watching Sebastian’s reviews and commentary. I have not had a chance to smell Amy fragrances from Memo Paris but always see positive reviews about the leather collection. I’ve enjoyed many Oud fragrances and pure oils and would love to give this one a try.

I have not been to the desert.

    I’m in the US.

  • thnx for giveaway, really enjoy sebs reviews seems like honest reviewer, man i dont know which id like to win african leather maybe most, really enjoy oud based fragrances ,these are great, live in u.s. so throw me in draw please thnx

  • Phenomenal review and super excited about those ginger and oud notes Sebastian talks about! I love Memo and I would love to have this in my wardrobe. Thanks to all who make this giveaway possible
I live in Seattle, WA, USA

  • I’ve never tried Memo’s frags before. Sebastian’s vid made this sound interesting though. I love ginger, and I love oud. I just usually associate the former with brighter, fresher scents, so the juxtaposition sounds like something I’d be curious to try.

  • Fantastic review and fantastic offering from Memo, this one has been on my want list for ages! Being a huge oud head, I’ve tried and owned many, still on search for the perfect one! Oud leather by Dior or Hard Leather/Black Oud by LM are not challenging at all to me, animalic, dense and smoky oud is my ultimate goal when I’m in the mood for oud, it’d be great to try this one out!

  • Diana D. says:

Sounds really intriguing! Some of the notes I’m not familiar with. But I love that it has rose in the top notes and tonka bean and oud in the base. I’m very drawn to scents with those 3 notes.
