Fragrance Review: Collection Grands Crus Berdoues Vânira Moorea (Alexandra Monet) 2016 + A Tale From The South Pacific Draw

Tales of The South Pacific First Edition 1947

“I wish I could tell you about the South Pacific. The way it actually was. The endless ocean. The infinite specks of coral we called islands. Coconut palms nodding gracefully toward the ocean. Reefs upon which waves broke into spray, and inner lagoons, lovely beyond description. I wish I could tell you about the sweating jungle, the full moon rising behind the volcanoes…” ― James A. Michener, Tales of the South Pacific

Hut under the coconut palms – Paul Gauguin. Watercolor.

In his Pulitzer Prize winning collection or stories, Tales of the South Pacific (1947), James Michener recounted his adventures in the South Seas and introduced his readers to the mythical island of Bali Hai. These days most of us are familiar with Bali Hai via adaptations of Michener's book, like the Broadway musical South Pacific by Rogers and Hammerstein or the two major film versions. James Michener's Bali Hai was not a real place but rather a dream, a composite of the South Pacific islands he encountered in his travels, a little bit of Vanuatu perhaps, something of Bora Bora and of course visions of the island paradise 10 nautical miles from Tahiti called Moorea. On this cold and dreary winter day in the northern hemisphere I would love to fly away to Michener's mythical island. But since I can't manage to travel to the South Pacific this winter, Vânira Moorea,  (won our Best of Show: Feminine Fragrance, Tranoi Show at the Tunnel.)  Vânira Moorea from The House of Berdoues Grands Crus Collection of fine colognes, is my south sea vacation in a bottle.

The House of Berdoues was founded in 1902.  Four generations of know-how, exploration and uncompromising care are evident in the development and preservation of the house's unique tradition of exceptional colognes.  In their new Grands Crus Collection Berdoues brings together the finest ingredients and more than a century of experience in the art of French high perfumery. The Grands Crus Collection perpetuates the Berdoues tradition and infuses each offering with the scents of the locations suggested on the beautifully decorated bottles.  Berdoues' new take on cologne is really quite revolutionary – neo-classical really, as it fulfills the requirement of a cologne (refreshment) while, at the same time, bringing contemporary taste, depth and longevity to the classical form.

Vânira Moorea is a vanilla that sparkles.  To me vanilla fragrances are almost always beautiful but often heavy, rich and gourmand. Not so Vânira Moorea! This new cologne, created by perfumer Alexandra Monet and introduced in July 2016, is at once vivid, saturated and crisp. With the initial spritz the slightly bitter, leafy pettigrain lifts the vanilla right off the ground. As the cologne drifts and swirls though the air, bright sparks of sweetness are carried on a green, misty essence of twigs and leaves.  This unisex, effervescent refreshment lasts for about an hour before the fragrance melts and settles onto the skin with a sensuality reminiscent of oranges and sunshine.

It is here that Vânira Moorea recalls my long lost memories and sensations of lazy days basking on tropical beaches. The sunbathing lasts an hour or so before Tahitian vanilla returns, now much richer but still vibrant with citrus. One spritz of Vânira Moorea will last me a good eight hours.  The vanilla is always evident but the fragrance is not linear. Subtle changes involve not only the fragrance notes but my perception of the concentration as well. It may seem strange, but Vânira Moorea begins for me as refreshing cologne, settles into an eau de parfum and ends as an extrait.

The moment of truth I, 1892 Paul Gauguin

In his Writer's Handbook: Explorations in Writing and Publishing (1992) Michener made the observations that “Writers turn dreams into print.” To my mind, perfumers work the same kind of magic. They turn dreams into scent. I have only seen pictures and documentaries of Moorea but I often visit the island in my dreams – and imagine myself visiting Bali Hai whenever I luxuriate in the refreshing exoticism of Berdoues Vânira Moorea.

Notes: Orange from Brazil, Petit Grain from Paraguay and Vanilla from Tahiti.

I would like to thank AMERIKASINC for the lovely bottle of Vânira Moorea (and for my island vacation in a bottle).  My opinions are my own.

Vânira Moorea Sounds like sunshine and tropical comfort vacations in a bottle. I grew up in the tropics and miss the scents and climate so much. I find myself drawn to scents that remind me of home. If I could take a dream vacation I’d go back to Hawaii and spend the summer watching sunrises over the beaches of my childhood.
It opens as a cologne, it wears like a perfume and closes like an extrait sounds like something beautiful I’d love to experience. I’d love to try this scent. Thank you for the generous chance to win this!

  • Sounds dreamy. I recently purchased my first bottle from this line, the new Russian Leather. I’ve sampled a few others in this line and they are delightful, long lasting and the bottles are whimsical. I love the hut under the coconut trees painting. I enjoyed reading this and thinking about a sunny tropical island as I just heard we are expecting another round of freezing rain/snow here in the northwest. I wish I was in that hut under the palms right now!! I live in the U.S.Thanks for the draw!

  • “Orange and sunshine” is the perfect description of Vanira Moorea. I have tried it and found it to be the perfect balance of vanilla and the orange note. I agree that it doesn’t go into gourmand territory. This is a lovely perfume and I would love to be the winner! USA Thanks for the draw

  • Vânira Moorea sounds like quite a refreshing vanilla and citrus, and one that would be a great travel companion when the weather gets warmer and my travel plans turn towards the beaches of Florida – it sounds perfect for summer travel. I have never heard of Berdoues before even though they have been around for a very long time, so I have not sampled any of their fragrances. My dream winter vacation would be St Barts. I am in the U.S.
    Thanks!

  • Any and all dream vacations for me are in the tropics or semi-tropics and I love the South Pacific. Berdoues is not a perfumes house that I have known much about, but Vânira Moorea sounds absolutely wonderful – Tahiti and the South Pacific in a bottle. That works for me, especially in New England in winter.
I love your pictures of France Nuyen. I always thought she was amazingly beautiful.
    USA.

  • Four generations of know-how and a century of experience really appeal to me…I love the idea of history in any endeavor! This perfume sounds like a literal dream to me and I really enjoy a perfume that takes me on a journey over its several-hour-long lifespan. I have not had the opportunity to try anything from Berdoues but I would love to start with this one; thank you for the chance. I am in the US.

  • Oh, I forgot to add that my dream winter vacation would be the mountains in Colorado…I’ve never lived anywhere but warm climates and would love to experience a snowy cabin at least once.

  • I have always wanted to visit Ireland in winter/spring.
This sounds like a refreshing scent for the hot weather without being generic.
    In USA.

I am intrigued by Berdoues Vânira Moorea because it is citrusy vanilla that is also unisex. This article has inspired me to put South Pacific movie on to-watch list. I have not tried anything from Grands Cus yet. My favorite winter vacation will be Hawaii or Japan. I am in the US.

Berdoues Vânira Moorea based on Gail’s review sounds like a perfect partner for a beach getaway. You’re on the beach, enjoying the scenery, clearing your thoughts and the perfume adds the little touch to make everything seemed perfect. My favorite winter vacation is climbing up the mountains, enjoying the smell of pine trees, of fresh produce and basically tuning myself out of the internet. Instead of phones, I’ll hear crickets, cicadas, everything natural not man made, and a cold breeze embracing me, lulling me to imagine that everything is fine in the world.

    I’m in California USA.

Vanilla fragrances are usually too heavy and too enveloping on my skin. From this review, I am very curious to smell an effervescent vanilla, a sunny rather than gourmand take on this note.
My favorite winter vacation would probably be someplace like Merida in Mexico.
I have never tried any fragrances from this line.
    I live in the USA.

  • I loved the review as it referenced takes of the South Pacific and was so beautifully written. Th quotes from Michener added so much writers turn dreams into print and perfumers turn dreams into scent
    Vanira Moorea sounds lovely sparkling
My favorite vacation destination would be Tahiti

  • This fragrance sounds like exactly what I need at this point in winter…oranges and sunshine…tropical vanilla lift-off. I have never read any Michener but now want to pick up and read a copy of Tales, with the scent of this perfume on my body. I will actually be going on my dream vacation soon!–visiting Brazil–the Amazon, Rio, and a retreat on the Atlantic coast. I have never tried any perfumes from this house. Thank you for the draw opportunity, I live in Colorado USA.

  • It’s grey and cold here, so please sign me up for sparkling vanilla and sunshine! It sounds so refreshing and pretty. I’m in the US and have never tried a Berdoues fragrance before. Thanks for the drawing.

  • I am not familiar with this line so thanks again, CaFleurebon, for introducing me to new things. This sounds so transporting and lovely, and as a basenotes fan, starting as a cologne, shifting to an edp and finishing as an extrait is intriguing. I don’t know what my dream vacation would be this winter, if I’d go could I get home? You can tell I’m in the US.

  • This perfume sounds lovely! Makes me wish it was summer and I was on a beach somewhere… anywhere where it is warm! But if I could go on a dream winter vacation I would love to go to Tahiti. That would be amazing! I have not tried any fragrances from Berdoues Collection Grands Crus but I would love to! I live in the US. Thanks for the draw:)

  • So this sounds like something i would really enjoy. I live in a warm climate, so my dream winter vacation would be a photographic safari in Africa. I’ve tried several from the Berdous Collection Grand Crus and liked every one. I hope to try this one as well. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • Deceiving name then, but as much as I love Vanilla fragrances there are so many great ones on the market. The notes in this sound appealing. I love green crisp openings and settling down on sunshine and oranges sounds delightful. Berdoues has some nice ones, I personally own Oud al Sahraa and find it very easy to wear. I would imagine the rest in this line are easy to wear fragrances. My dream vacation would be a visit to Thailand, the culture, the people, the greenness of the country draws me. I am in Wisconsin where we have short summers. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • I am most intrigued by the progression of strength – how it moves from cologne to extrait intensity. Many fragrances get weaker over time, so interesting that this one gets stronger! Also, I love the movie 🙂 dream winter vacation – Iceland 😀 and no, I have not experienced a perfume from this collection.

  • I live in a cold place, far from a beach. In fact, I have never been to a beach or even out of the US, so I enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of foreign places through the writings of others. The fragrance sounds lovely, like everything a beautiful, warm, sunny place should be. My dream vacay would be to to a white sand beach somewhere deserted, with plenty of swaying palm trees and singing birds. I have no experience with this house but would love to try, thanks!

  • Fabulous review! This scent sounds very intriguing as I am not into heavy, sweet vanilla scents.
Have not tried anything from this house. Would love to be in Ireland right now, such a beautiful place. I live in the U.S. Thanks for the giveaway!!

  • I love when fragrances try and match the scents with locations. Many have tried but fewer are actually true to the locations they try to represent with the fragrance. Im really hoping for this one. There was a story i read as a child that dealt with a South Pacific island. I don’t know if Michener was the author but Im excited to check some of his writings to see. The notes for this fragrance sound so amazing in their simplicity. Orange, petit grain and vanilla. Im picturing how it might smell:)
Dream Winter vacation would definitely be somewhere warm. Much needed after this cold season. Maybe one of those South Pacific Islands….Bora Bora or Vanuatu.
I have not experienced any fragrances from this house but would LOVE to win.
Im in the USA. Thanks so much for the information on this one and for opportunity.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the introduction of new perfume house with wonderful review. I adore such perfumes with few notes, and Berdoues Vanira Moorea has only three notes. This indicates the craftsmanship of a master perfumer. Its simple but complex, rich & vibrant. Haven’t try any of the Parfums Berdoues & would love to try this.
Thanks to the generosity of AMERIKASINC and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in NY, US.

  • I’ve never heard of this house or line. I love Tropical themed fragrances. Especially Island Tropical. I love the fact that Berdoues Vanira Moorea is more of a fresher vanilla with it’s accompanying petitgrain and orange notes. I’m more used to vanilla fragrances that are heavy and this sounds like something I’m looking for with the upcoming warm weather. A warm weather vanilla is an absolute need for me. I’m in the US. The Black Sandy beaches of Hawaii would be my dream winter vacation. Thank you so much.
