The era of the 1920’s must have really been something to behold.  I sometimes wish I could just jump in a time machine and go back for a time and experience it myself.  Alas, that dream is nowhere near possible currently, but, in a certain way; we can indeed go back in time through the reference of smell.  Today we take a venture back to that decade with a the spritzing of Ernest Daltroff’s Acaciosa as interpreted in the modern day urns of Caron.

Of all the offerings of Caron I must admit there is not one that I can pick out and declare as my absolute favorite.  To do so would be a gross understatement of the grandiose greatness of every single last creation of the house (yes, original and reformulations-vintage and modern).  However, Acaciosa to me is one of the best representations of the house and of the era it was created.  The sheer artistry of it is beyond words.  The sum of its parts defies classification in many senses of the word “classification”.  It’s not really Oriental, I wouldn’t call it a Floral-Aldehyde either…what I will call it is Floral Divine.

Jasmine by Isaac Maimon

Jasmine by Isaac Maimon

Acaciosa starts out with an absolutely phenomenal blast of floral powdery lusciousness.   It smells absolutely luxurious and unmistakably distinctive to Caron.  Hints of rose, orange blossom, and jasmine come into the mix very soon making for a very vivid discourse in my mind on just how clever Ernest Daltroff was.  There is something very sweet going on here that is very unique and intriguing.  There is a lack of citrus notes, but fruity sweetness is most certainly evident acting to bind the florals together in an almost syrupy fashion.  The said note is pineapple aldehyde augmented with a touch of additional floral aldehydes which acts to fill in gaps and add to the overall bouquet.

Cabaret Isaac maimon

It masterfully interweaves between the notes as to add lift and dispersion to the florals.  Frankly, it’s brilliant. It gives the perfume an air of opulence that can hardly be matched and a unique quality that even to this day has not been matched in my opinion.  It’s bold and it’s beautiful…as bright as a sunny day, but deep as the darkest star filled night.

Maimon-FOUR-MUSES music

Isaac Maimon Four Muses

The middle notes are where my heart absolutely sings with happiness at the “music” presented to me comes into the full fruition after the amazing overture set the stage for the dynamic animalistic carnal delights to come.    Through the bouquet of flowers a hint of civet comes into the mix acting to lift the more dirty aspects of jasmine.  The orange flower is still evident at this point and in certain respects calls to mind a tempered Narcisse Noir (glorious).

sheila isaac maimon

As time goes on we move into even more sensual territory as hints of ambergris marry with leather for a harmony that is very rich.  The leather accord here brings to mind Tabac Blonde, but again presented in a tempered fashion.  It’s nearly as if Daltroff put together ideas of previous compositions and improved upon them in a new softer more sensual composition with absolutely glorious results.  A sweet muskiness begins to arise after about two hours adding a sexiness to composition making for a very sultry affair indeed.

La dame Rose Isaac maimon

As we move into the final act a warm and sweet vanilla bean begins to dominate as it joins the mix of the animalistic/leathery aspects of the mids. There are touches of amberish sandalwood weaving here and there which actually acts to clean up the dirty aspects in a soap meets incense like fashion that is very interesting to behold.  It all so very moving and seductive in the most romantic of ways- we are talking romantic sensualism of the highest magnitude.  It’s oh so loud, but very discreet at the same time.  It’s sort of like a hot affair that goes on and on, but is sweet and fulfilling every single time.  One thing is for sure, this perfume is masterfully executed and never, ever dull; moreover, it’s oh so very Caron.

Loved the review trip thru the scent and its variations. The pics were tres tres for the review.
Caron is a name known for exotics both edgy and soft.
USA and my sample pack is Naricissie Noir.
    Thanks for classic draw.

  • Wow!! This is great. I really enjoyed the part of Aaron’s review.

My very favorite Caron is Tabac Blond. I would love to try the Acaciosa, it sounds divine. Thank you, I live in the U.S.

Thanks for this review and the lovely draw! I appreciated how Aaron described different aspects of Acaciosa’s DNA coming from/inspired by a variety of other Carons. True to his assessment, I do find a clear house style really run through all the scents in a distinctive way! It initially (in my “perfume youth”) made me feel like they all smelled the same, but recently retrying them, I realize how silly I was! I’d be thrilled to win the Acaciosa, since I actually haven’t tried this particular one in a while.

My sample pick would be Tabac Blond (and it is also my favorite, perhaps along with Poivre.)

    I’m in the US.

I would love to get a sample of this new release. I love that it has orange blossom and jasmine in the top notes. But then there are so many other interesting notes that follow, that the scent has me so intrigued!
    I live in the U.S.

  • What a generous draw, thank you Disna Haska and Caron Paris USA! Love the beautiful urns. What a wonderful way to capture the luxury and elegance for which Caron is known :). I would love to try Acaciosa, Aaron’s description with the orange blossom and jasmine is so feminine. For the US sample, I will kindly request Farnesiana, please. Hay and mimosa sound divine :)) I love tabac blonde and am looking forward to trying En Avion and Nuit de Noel in due course. Thanks.

  • I already own Acaciosa and I agree, it’s something special. I especially like the civet note that amps up the indolic facets of the jasmine. For the sample, I have never smelled Tabac Blonde and I would love some. Thanks Diane for the draw! I’m in the USA

  • Great review and what a wonderful fragrance brand. I would love 2 sample Tabac Blond. My favorite Caron Paris Urn fragrance is Yatagan.
I want to sample Tabac Blond
    I live in America

  • “It’s sort of like a hot affair that goes on and on, but is sweet and fulfilling every single time.” That is the kind of effect that made me fall in love with perfume in the first place. The only Caron Paris Urn fragrance I’ve tried is N’aimez Que Moi, which is lovely. I’d like to try all the others, but especially En Avion. I am in the continental US.

  • MikasMinion says:

Wow. What a very generous offer! I am not very up on the Caron urn scents since they’re not something I have ever run across “in the wild” and I haven’t gotten around to ordering samples. Acaciosa is one I have really wanted to try, though, because the reviews I have read seem to all highlight something different. The pineapple note is so interesting and the description of it as “floral divine” is so tempting.
As I have never smelled Tabac Blond, which makes me feel like a perfumista fraud, that would be my choice to sample. A huge thank you to Diane for this opportunity.
    I am in the US.

  • I adore the paintings! Reading this review makes me really want to try this perfume! He makes Acaciosa truly sound like a “Floral Divine”. Thank you Diane for your generosity! I would love to sample Tabac Blond. I live in the USA.

  • What a gorgeous review, and the art used was/is spot-on! I always love reading about Caron because…well…Caron! Although a popular range with perfumistas, it still doesn’t get talked about as much as it should. I haven’t yet found a Caron I don’t love, and my favorite is Royal Bain, especially in the summer and straight out of the fridge! I’m in the USA and would love to try N’Aimez Que Moi. Many thanks for the draw.

  • Aaron’s trip through time was such fun. The 20’s must have been gloriously fragrant. Acaciosa sounds like an amazing work of art. I enjoyed reading how Ernest Daltroff used pineapple and floral aldehydes to create a beautiful bouquet.

The only two Caron scents I’ve tried are Bellodgia (I love the carnation) and Pour un Homme de Caron (the most amazing lavender and vanilla). Those were so perfect that I imagine the Urn fragrances I’ve never tried are marvelous as well.

I am in the continental US and would love to sample Acaciosa. Thank you to Caron for the generous draw, and to CaFleureBon for the thoughtful review and artwork as well.

  • Huge thank you to Diane Haska, CaFleureBon, Aaron Potterman, and to The House of Caron for this marvellous article and gift. The amazing Ernest Daltroff is my favorite perfumer of all time, and the visual pairings (Michelyn!) are spot on. This article is the highlight of my week! My choice? Acaciosa, Poivre , Tabac Blond, Farnesiana .N’ aimez Que Moi OR En Avion, Darlings.

  • doveskylark says:

Aaron made the unfolding notes of Acaciosa sound like watching a play in four acts. Tabac Blond is my all-time favourite fragrance. I’d like to try Poivre if I were to win the draw. I’m in the USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

I admit like Aaron it is also difficult for me to pick one favorite urn fragrance. Many of Caron’s fragrances are so rich winter and fall are the most appropriate seasons for them but Acaciosa seems like one of those urn fragrances are that all-season due to fruity and floral elements.
Of the choices, my favorite urn fragrance is Tabac blonde. I have Tabac blonde in vintage formula and would love to try it in a newer formula. I am in the US.

  • Great review – it felt like a symphony! I love the story of the house of Caron, such beauty and skill in and want to try all of them! so far my favorite is Narcisse Noir but I would like to try Acaciosa. I live in the US and am thank you for the generous draw.

  • Wonderful review! The description of the last phase,– ” … a hot affair that goes on and on, but is sweet and fulfilling every single time.”– is very alluring.

I think my favorite urn fragrance is Pois de Senteur.

    Fabulous, generous draw. Thank you!

  • Love the imagery of the description, the words weave through the notes and tell a story. I don’t have a favorite – I’ve not tried any. Though Farnesiana sounds wonderful, with this beautiful description of Acaciosa I would choose this if I win.
I”m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • I am a fan of Caron fragrances and this is one I have not yet had the pleasure of sampling. The new fragrance category of “Divine Floral ” is intriguing! In this case it includes ambergris, musk, woods, vanilla and more. How can a scent be loud and discreet at the same time? I would love to sample Acaciosa and find out! Thanks Diane and Caron for the draw and samples! I would like a bit of Farnesiana. In the US.

  • Kanajasmine says:

I have never tried an urn fragrance they are hard to find but now I can call Diane Yay
Like how nice is she to do that and really surprised there are not hundreds of comments but more for me
I love nuit de Noel and narcisse noir
I would like the Acaciosa the floral divine
PS Aaron you really brought the scent alive I love this review

  • I forgot to include the sample I would choose: Acaciosa
I am also in the U.S.

    Thank you so much!

  • That bottle is beautiful and the review made Acaciosa sound like a delight to experience! The urn fragrances make me happy because it’s keeping the classic grand perfume tradition alive. If I’m not too late to request a sample or enter the draw, I’ve always wanted to try Farnesiana. I am in the US. Thank you!
