The West Coast  continues to be the hot bed of olfactory creativity as FRAGments 2015, the independent Los Angeles based Artisan Perfume Event and collective will hold its third curated “perfume-as-art celebration of all things  scented” on Saturday, May 30, 2015. Artisan perfumers (those who conceive, make, bottle and market their own work) will present their work in a gallery setting and sell direct to the public.

During the event, the perfumers will participate in a Surrealist Art inspired collaboration called “Exquisite Corpus. Each perfumer will contribute a note towards the creation of a collective perfume. Samples will be available.

“FRAGments is a wonderful opportunity for makers to interact with the public in a relaxed atmosphere that enhances all of the senses”, says founder and curator Maggie Mahboubian. “Artisan perfumers have limited distribution and are distinct from their commercial counterparts, focusing more on conceptual and cutting edge compositions that often incorporate rare and unique materials. FRAGments was conceived as a way to make this kind of work available to the public through the celebration of its artistry. It is an event created by an artisan perfumer for artisan perfumers!” FRAGments also seek to define a community of makers and enthusiasts who share a common passion for the art of fragrance design.

The name FRAGments recognizes that artisan perfumery is a FRAGrance moveMENT that is distinct from its commercial roots. "FRAG" is perfumista slang for fragrance and implies that artisan perfumers are parts of a whole.

FRAGments is held at a different venue each year, one that reveals an unknown aspect of the city. The intention is for artisan perfumery to be opened up to the world at large.  FRAGments 2015 will be held at Richard Neutra's (a mid century modern architect) former Silverlake office which has recently been converted into a museum and gallery by his son, Dion Neutra who collaborated with his father on projects in the 1950's and 1960's. Dion Neutra is actively working to preserve this heritage of iconic modern architecture that helped define the character of Los Angeles. (To learn more about Richard Neutra and his work please visit http://www.neutra.org/).

  • I wish I lived in LA. I would love to go…. It is so nice to see artisan perfumers get recognition

  • WOW..wow…wow! A jam packed event. If I wasn’t going to be in New Mexico I would attend. I love that each perfumer will be contributing a note to a perfume available at the event. So glad to see the West Coast active in showcasing the perfumers. Maggie this is a fabulous contribution to the lovers of Indie perfumers, and what a fabulous idea.
