Finally, A Fragrance of its Own: Hanukah Canelle by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of Parfums Des Beaux Arts + Draw

There are hundreds of Yuletide songs we start humming after carving the Thanksgiving turkey. Hanukkah (aka Hanukah & Chanukah), however, gets no respect; I can think of few musical tributes, Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song and Songs In The Key Of Hanukkah by Erran (brother of Sacha) Baron Cohen. Similarly, there are dozens of Christmas scents that people of all religions love and wear, and there hasn't been a fragrance named for this joyous holiday…until now.

Hanukah Cannelle was originally created as a special Holiday 2009 fragrance by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, the indie cult perfumer and founder of  Parfums des Beaux Arts. (DSH, as she's known in the industry, was also the recipient of Best Independent Business 2009, and first runner up for Best New Business and Best Eco-Friendly Retailer.) "This Holiday scent was inspired by my favorite Hanukah pastries which I bake using apples, cinnamon, nuts and honey; plus I remember a dish I used to make for Passover Seder with my roommate when I was in college – it was with apple and cinnamon," explains DSH. "For the perfume, I added an aldehydic green note in the top warm woods, and a soft musk drydown to balance the sweetness of the apple and the cinnamon. And of course, I've taken some artistic liberties to create a Holiday perfume that's sexy, luscious, and a delight to wear all year round"

It's traditional at Hanukah to receive eight gifts – but even if you celebrate Christmas or Kwanzaa, it's still a perfect holiday scent to give and to receive.

  • I am a longtime admirer of Dawn's work starting from her days on Newbury Street in Boston.  She is passionate about her art and generous with her knowledge.  I would just love to try Hanukah Cannelle, thanks for the opportunity.

  • I am a relatively new admirer of Dawn's work, but I completely agree with Michelle H: Dawn is a kind, passionate and generous person. If I won the Hanukah Cannelle purse spray, I would be tempted to keep it, of course, but am determined that I would give it to a friend who, unlike me, does celebrate Hanukah. Thank you!

  • I have been wanting to try DSH perfumes for a long time. I am reading so many wonderful descriptions and reviews these days that I'm very intrigued by them. The fragrances seem to be very special, with great ideas behind them which make me think of lovely and evocative smells.
This one must be a perfect winter scent. Thanks for the drawing.

  • Just thought I'd mention that Hanukah Cannelle is also part of Dawn's brand new sampler of all her Holiday scents – I chose it for my December sampling budget the moment I read about it on her blog.  One of the things I appreciate about the sampler sets is the free shipping: her international shipping rates are a bit steep, so this is the best way for the rest of us to try out her scents.
One more day 'til I put in my order. I can't wait!

  • I've tried quite a few of DSH scents and love them. She really does lovely work. This Hanukah scent sounds gorgeous, please enter me in the draw.

  • I finally met Dawn this past summer and was very impressed with all of her scents.  I had so much fun while she helped me figure out scents that worked for me.  Reading about this one, I am won over once again by the sandalwood  😉  I am sure it is another wonderful combination!

  • I love Dawn's work – her Dirty Rose is my go-to scent this fall. I'm also intrigued by her December scent, and might spring for a sample soon. Hanukah Canelle sounds yummy!

  • I have not really explored Dawn's scents. So I hope my name is drawn because what a great way to start exploring DSH scents.

  • I'm certainly curious about this scent and all of her creations. The concoction that intrigues me most right now though is the mushroom leather… forgot its proper name… It would be a thrill to win anything from Dawn.

  • What I find interesting is that Hannukah really isn't a big Jewish holiday–the Jewish "holiday season" would most logically take place during September. It's really only by virtue of being near Christmas that people make such a big fuss of it, yet usually have never even heard of much bigger Jewish holidays. Anyway, I've heard tons of praise for Dawn's work but have yet to give it a sniff. This sounds lovely–I love gourmands that aren't too overtly gourmand, if that makes sense.

  • Love Christmas scents! Love the idea of making scent for particular occasion. I can always expect that it will be memorable and that it will smell like spirit of some event/holiday.
Thanks for possibility to try it.
