San Francisco Marina District

March 15th marked the day of the Third Annual Taste TV Artisan Fragrance Salon, which takes place in conjunction with the Artisan Chocolate Salon, out in the picturesque San Francisco Marina District in an event space at historic Fort Mason. The sky was blue and the day was gorgeous; perfect San Francisco weather with a slight breeze. About twenty perfumers were showing their wares, some for the first time at the San Francisco event, and some for the first time ever.

It was my pleasure to be working alongside my friend Mario T. Gomez, (who has been a Contributing writer for CaFleureBon) launching his perfume line, Mario Tomas, with three fragrances, Lo Mejor de Mi #1, Corazon Blanco, and Mi Poeta. Mario is an avid perfumista and is known as the Olfactory Ambassador. His love of making and sharing fragrances with his friends and family finally brought him to the Salon to debut his work, comprised of both natural and synthetic ingredients. Also making their debuts at the salon were Julia Jackson of Gnosis Perfumes and Kuniko Binet of Hexarom. Both are perfumers working in natural and botanical scents.

Some brands that were new to me but weren’t launching that day were the fascinating Nomad Two Worlds Raw Spirit fragrances, natural perfumer Suzinn Weiss with Blooming Dreams, Tania Ruben’s Pure Natural Diva, and natural perfumer Olivia Larson’s La Fleure by Livvy. Heather Kaufmann of Jolie Laide showcased her natural scents named after French New Wave films, and Meredith Smith was there with her cute Sweet Anthem line. Lavender grower and perfumer Meshaz Munyan’s line of natural scents, Meshaz, was a standout. Meshaz gave a successful presentation on lavender that she said was a lot of fun. I look forward to exploring both the brand-new and new-to-me perfume lines.

Of course, there was plenty of excitement from the brands that I know well. Shelley Waddington of En Voyage was showing three new gourmand fragrances (Indigo Vanilla, Cafe Cacao, and Captured in Amber), MIKMOI launched a fun new collection of solid perfumes: Ka, Do, Ki, Sui, and Kin (based on the five elements), and Ellen Covey of Olympic Orchids had two new perfumes, Sakura (cherry blossom, airy note and light musk)  and the exquisite African Orchid (jasmine, ylang-ylang, birch, madagascar vanilla, spicy accord and musk) which will be released mid April 2014. It’s always wonderful to see the delightful Brent Leonesio of Smell Bent, who loves any excuse to come to town, with or without new fragrances. Paul Kiler has a new addition to his PK Perfumes collection called Dirty Rose Oud. I know I am leaving people out; because I was also working I didn’t get the chance to visit with everyone at length, but I did chat with Laurie Stern of Velvet & Sweet Pea Purrfumery, gave squeezes to Dannielle Sergent of Cognoscenti, Ineke Rühland of Ineke and Floral Curiosities, handsome Bruno Fazzolari, and Lisa Fong of Artemesia. I had a chance to visit with our lovely Contributor Elise Pearlstine who was there to meet the left-coasters. Also exhibiting was our friend Jane Cate of A Wing and A Prayer. I also met author Barbara Herman, who will be in town in a couple of weeks for a book signing for “Scent and Subversion”.

Like any event of this nature, it was as much about the people as the perfume. I met burgeoning perfumistas new to exploring, saw friends from out of town, and talked to so many people I was hoarse in the morning. There were people who came just for the Fragrance Salon as well as welcome spillover from the Chocolate Salon. Everyone’s arms were coated with a variety of smells. I gave some friends a ride afterwards and my warm car was immediately filled with a miasma of wonderful fragrances from all of us. It was a great day, and I look forward to the announcement for the next Taste TV Artisan Fragrance Salon in San Francisco.

YAY! As I was reading this, I thought that “African Orchid” sounded incredible, and you’re giving it away!

US resident — thanks for the draw!

  • I have always loved sakura-flavored sweets, so I am especially curious to see how it would be handled in a perfume. As for the African Orchid, it seems to be full of notes I love: vanilla, ylang-ylang, and jasmine!

  • I love hearing about all the new and upcoming perfumers! I’d love to try Sakura, since I am a huge fan of Ellen Covey’s work. I am in hte US, thanks!

  • It’s great to learn that the 3rd Taste TV San Francisco event attracts both pros and newbies and is especially welcoming of the latter. I think African Orchid would be my style – thanks!

  • African Orchid sounds divine! I’ve been waiting with baited breath for Paul’s Dirty Rose Oud Extrait to launch! Tama,vI’m jealous..wish there were enough artisans in Florida for an event like this!!! Thanks to Ca Fleure Bon and Ellen tor the chance! Great article, Thanks!

  • Can’t believe it’s that time of year again (Fragrance Salon time)! Love Ellen and her scents — I do believe African Orchid is the one I most want to try…can’t wait for April! thanks!

  • It seems everybody was present, which must have been fun. I like that ‘exquisite’ was used to decribe African Orchid, it build expectation :).
The Olympic Orchids I think I’d enjoy most are Ballets Rouge and Rainforest.

  • Love reading about what’s next and new for many familiar names.
I would like the Sakura please 🙂

  • Even though the rate of new releases really bothers my mind, it’s always exciting to have new perfumes to try. Both of the new Olympic Orchids sound spectacular- but i have to say that Sakura is appealing to my yearning for spring.

  • Tama and Michelyn, thank you for your comprehensive coverage of the San Francisco Fragrance Salon! It was good to see familiar faces and meet the newcomers!

  • You have reminded me that I need to sample Sweet Anthem’s scents. I am a huge Olympic Orchids fan and Sakura sounds really great. I love her quieter perfumes for work. especially Osafume. I am in the US. Thank you!

So many talented perfumers all in one place, I could spend days just sniffing and talking! Ellen’s scents are all lovely, but you are right in describing the Orchid perfumes as exquisite. Definatly want to try African Orchid, my fav is the sublime Javanica. Must have been a bit of swooning going on there! I’m in the USA. Thanks for the chance and all the great reporting.

  • Dear Tama and Michelyn thank you for this “live” report of the SF Fragrance Salon event. Wish we had something similar here in Greece too! So many lovely new perfumes to experience all in one place.
African Orchids would definitely be my style since it has so many ingredients I love, madagascar vanilla, ylang-ylang, jasmine, birch and musk … wish I could smell it and wear it as well 🙂
What I found interesting in the article is the community of perfumers never too small or either too big always open to newcomers who have something interesting to say with their creations.

  • I wish I were there! Despite being a big event, it sounds so personal and cozy. It must be so exciting to discover and experience all those new fragrances. 🙂
I’m so drawn to African Orchids. I don’t think I’ve ever tried anything with birch… I know the smell of the living tree but I wonder what it’s like in the perfume.
Thanks for the report and draw. I’m in the EU.

  • Thank you for this exciting live report of the SF Fragrance Salon event. Wish to have something like this closer to me… Or to be able to travel to US when I like….

I am drawn to African Orchid, as it seems having more “body” and many of the smells I like in the composition.
    I live in Romania, Europe.

  • What fun to have so many indie perfumers in one place. Oh, the smells! And chocolate! Win, win.
African Orchid sounds like me. I live in the US.

it is interesting that more and more perfumers are giving talks on perfume ingredients like Meshaz gave on lavender. i may find African Orchid to be more to my liking..i am in the US

  • This does sound like so much fun and I wish I could have been there. Chocolate and fragrances–what is not to like? I love Ineke’s fragrances, several from Sweet Anthem, and Olympic Orchids is on my list. Would have been so fun to meet the people behind the name. African Orchid sounds yummy (my 3 yr old nephew’s favorite word). Thanks! U.S.

I would like African Orchid for the draw. usa
SF Artisan Fragrance Salon and all those worthy scent makers…and a few of my favorites. Ms. Covey thank you for the draw. continued success to all.

  • Thank you for the exciting report.

African Orchids sound like my fav type. I also found PK Dirty Rose Oud very interesting.

  • Thank you, Ms. Blough! Sounds like it was more of a friend’s gathering than a big formal event – love it! The atmosphere around perfumers and perfumistas is always unconstrained and great smelling!!!
Sakura seems like more of my kind of fragrance though I don’t have a real cherry blossom perfume in my scent wardrobe!
    Thanks for the draw!
I am in the EU, Bulgaria.

It would be great if one of the Salons could come to Pboenix in the future! I would like to try Sakura – cherry blossoms and light musk sound perfect for spring

  • The event sounds so exciting because I would have loved to have met all of those talented perfumers! African Orchid sounds like it would most be my style. I’m in the U.S.

  • Well, we can be only jealous that they are such places where events like this are hold and that people have opportunity to go there. I do understand that meeting people is for perfumista more important then to try new scent. I think African Orchid would be my style. Lubka

  • Whoa! Fragrance salon, Chocolate salon, what’s not to love?
Just being around so many talented creators sounds like the best part of that day.

African Orchid appeals to me the most, it sounds deep and grounded.

  • It was my first Fragrance Salon. Wow! I must confess I .a lot starting with Mario Tomas, then PK Perfumes, Smell Bent, En Voyage, Bruno Fazzolari and finally Ineke. I’d alrady purchased MIKMOI and Cognoscenti at TigerLily. All gorgeous scents and kudos to Mario Tomas and his great launch
