Event Report: Sniffapalooza “Voluptuary An Afternoon of Sensual Pairings with Euphorium Brooklyn, Chef Tessa Liebman and Tal Shpantzer” + Sweet Decadence Draw

On March 5th, Team Karen Dubin and Karen Adams of Sniffapalooza presented Voluptuary: An Afternoon of Sensual Pairings which featured the multi-sensory pairings of fragrance from Euphorium Brooklyn, food from Chef Tessa Liebman, photography from Tal Shpantzer, and a short film debut.

The event was conceived by Stephen Dirkes, perfumer, filmmaker, multi-media artist, and the founder of Euphorium Brooklyn as the launch his latest fragrance collection, the Voluptuary Trio Set.

MAISON 10 Mission Statement

Held at the NoMad retail concept store and gallery, MAISON 10, which highlights 10 highlydesirable items across 10 different categories for a period of 10 weeks i.e. a total of only 100 items. The fragrance category includes Parfums QuartanaSulékóKelly+Jones, and Raw Spirit to name a few. Co-founders and Partners,Tom Blackie and Henri Myers were in attendance and provided Domaine Carneros sparkling brut and rose  to help celebrate the occasion.

Karen Dubin, Founder of Sniffaplooza, greeted us and introduced the framework for the afternoon’s event, directing our attention to the fragrance and photography stations while Chef Tessa Lieberman’s culinary creations wafted in the air around us.

Stephen Dirkes began by giving us background on Euphorium Brooklyn’s origins and how the Voluptuary Set was conceived with a focus on sensuality and decadence. The back stories set the tone for the afternoon’s pairings.

SUEDOIS (suede) is a soft leather scent. As it was the lightest of the three, it was presented first. This fragrance has notes which include Indonesian sandalwood, raspberry, raisin, labdanum, vanilla cream, and tonka musk which paired seamlessly with Chef Tessa’s Suedois Cream Puffs with its Ylang Ylang Profiterole Shell and Tonka Bean and Sandalwood Bavarian Cream, and Raspberries.

PÉTALES was inspired by Tal Shpantzer’s striking portraits, The Petal Series were featured prominently throughout the gallery. This is Stephen’s much touted floral, and my favorite in the line as it is truly unique. From a culinary standpoint, its notes of orange blossom, black pepper, honey, ambergris, indole, and galbanum, could have been a challenge. Petales Pavlova was Chef Tessa’s answer to both the fragrance and the photography’s compelling dark mystery. Highlighting the animalistic notes of the fragrance with long pepper in the grapefruit curd along with orange flower water which Tessa dusted with rose petal powder and mixed with rose pink edible glitter which gave the effect of petals shimmering in the moonlight which is part of the story of the fragrance.

CHOCOLATL  might have been the easiest to pair due to the gourmand nature of the scent. With its dark Mexican cocoa, vanilla, honey, prune, and caramel, one almost feels encouraged to take a swig from the bottle. For this Chef Tessa conjured up a Mexican chocolate meringue base with red wine and Piloncillo stewed prunes with a creme fraiche. So rich and decadent. 

The afternoon’s presentations concluded with Stephen introducing a special sneak peek screening of Voluptuary #535, the short film he created in collaboration with Tal which will be premiered at La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival 2017.

    Oh my God…I love dessert, that sounds DELICIOUS! I loved seeing the interpretation of fragrances as culinary art, so fascinating (would be so cool if a company sold fragrances and included a recipe you could make to go with the fragrance.) I would have loved to try Suedois Cream Puffs, I LOVE cream puffs. I think PETALES appeals to me most, as I love unique floral fragrances.

    Hmmm, I want to try Petales most but think the chocolate meringues sound delicious. All three scents and confections sound worth sampling, however.

    Cronuts! The hype for this one has come and gone in my country but I haven’t eaten one. Normally I’d go for the petales but that CHOCOLATL is what I’m craving for. Hernando’s virtual tour made me crave for some pastries now and I like how everyone seems to enjoy the event based on his pictures.

    I would have loved to taste SUEDOIS because I have never eaten anything with sandalwood related ingredient. Moreover, the perfume has Indonesian Sandalwood and I never knew about it because it has been either mysore or Australian sandalwood in perfumes. i am in US.

  • I am so jealous that New Yorkers get to experience this type of events. These perfumes and the dessert pairings sound so luxurious and wonderful. Petales sounds likesomething i would love. USA

  • Very nice article about this event. The pictures too. The delicacies seems so delicious that made my mouth watery. CHOCOLATL is the most appealing fragrance to my taste. I love this kind of scent. I never tried CHOCOLATL but the notes sounds delicious. The others fragrances seems great fragrances too.

    I really enjoyed Hernando’s tour. I hope that Chef Tessa has a cookbook in her future. I’ve been cooking with flowers and would love to pair food and fragrance. I think that I’d want to try the Petales Pavloval and Petales would be my choice of the fragrances. I’m in the US and thank you for this draw!`

  • I would love to taste CHOCOLATL because I believe I have never tried anything like that with so realistic note of chocolate. I have tried SUEDOIS and its very strong but I liked. I would love to have an opportunity to participate in an event like Sniffapalooza spending my time sniffing great fragrances and meeting new interesting people.

  • Chocolate is my love and I am not deserting her, so for me it’s CHOCOLATL .
    But I like the pairing of cream puff too. I have been loving how different forms of creative facets can be woven together.

    I wish I could have been at this event! I admire the chefs who met the challenge of creating a dessert that reflects the fragrance.
    The fragrance that appeals to me most is Petales, because of the indole.
    The dessert that I would have liked to try is the cream puff created for Suedois. The sandalwood Bavarian cream with the raspberries must have been delicious!

  • What a fun event! I enjoyed Hernando’s virtual tour and want to go back and read his Jo Malone Sensory Pairings post. I would loved to have sampled the chocolate confection, but the fragrance Patales appeals to me the most. I live in the US.

  • Great article. Seems to have been a great event. I would love to have had the opportunity to attend or even the opportunity to attend something like that one day. I have not yet tested any perfume of this brand but by the reviews and by what the people speak CHOCOLATL this is definetly my favorite to try but Suedios sounds more complex.

  • Great roundup as always. I have a tiny sample of Chocolatl, and can attest to its dark, spicy deliciousness. The accompanying treat sounded tasty too. Would love to try the set!
