Esxence 2017: Interview with NISHANE Creative Directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran + KARAGOZ, ZENNE & HACIVAT Fragrance Draw

When Creative Directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran of Nishane  (nish-ANAY) Istanbul launched their 16 “Extrait de Parfum Collection” during Esxence 2015, a brand was born. In fact, the first perfume House from Istanbul garnered critical acclaim world-wide. Contributor Sebastian Jara has reviewed Spice Bazaar from the inaugural collection and Fan Your Flames, introduced at Esxence 2016 and based on the poetry of the Sufi writer Rumi.  Esxence is held annually in Milan, the largest fair in the world for artistic perfumery and there is much to absorb, to smell and with hundreds of exhibitors there are always stand-out scents and concepts. For 2017, one stand-out is the new NISHANE Shadow Play Collection which was inspired by traditional Turkish puppetry popularized during the Ottoman Period, during the 14th-16th century. The Shadow Play trilogy, all extraits de Parfums ($215 USD) are KARAGOZ, ZENNE and HACIVAT are based on three classic Turkish puppet characters.

    Seems market goes back to fruity, woody and floral type of fragrances. Personally, I am a fan of oriental resiny-ambery perfumes, but not a fan of oudy fragrances and I am happy we can see less oudy fragrances nowadays.
    Thanks to Sebastian for such a good interview and thanks to Cafleurebon too for the draw. If I have a chance I like to win Karagoz. Live in the US.

    I loved the interview, I enjoyed how interested Sebastian about the story behind the scents and how he recognised the pineapple note in the second perfume, a note that both Karagoz and Hacivat share.

    The puppet that would be more my character would be Hacivat but as a perfume of choice it has to be Zenne. I hope I will be lucky to try it as I am not acquainted with Nishane’s creations yet.

    As always, I enjoyed Sebastian’s interview. It was exciting to see how enthusiastic Murat is about his 3 new scents and how they tie in to the characters in the traditional shadow plays of Turkey. I would like to think I am most like Zenne but perhaps I flatter myself; nevertheless, that is the one I would most like to try, as well. I am a subscriber to Sebastian’s wonderful you-tube channel as well as Cafleurebon and I am in the US.

    I am a subscriber to LFSG, and registered here, and the fave part of the video was learning about, and seeing an example of, the shadow play.

    Craziness, I just ordered Bosporusz earlier tonight, having tested a sample over the week, and I already have Sultan Vetiver, I can’t say which which is my favourite, perhaps the latter to invigorate, and the former to contemplate. I’m also getting a fistful of samples of the line with the Bosporusz, so time will tell, my purchases so far have reflected the seasons we are heading towards.

    Anyway, tough call between Karagoz and Hacivat for me, but…Karagoz, I am really curious as to how that plays out.

    All of these sound incredible. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Nishane, but these are very intriguing based on the descriptions and the listed notes

    I think I would like Hacivat the most, honestly. Zenne calls out to me because of the notes, but I like that black bottle. 🙂

    They are very interesting scents. Since I am from that region, I don’t see the fruity connection with the history, I would go much darker for these fragrances, but I respect their view. I would love to try them.

    Im thinking Karagoz is the one for me, as I consider myself an artist and sometime performer:)Don’t have a favorite Nishane fragrance yet but maybe one of these will take the crown:)

    I love when they showed the dolls! Wow that was so cute – I would love to see the actual play one day, the characters sound so fascinating – especially my favorite, ZENNE. My character is probably more so HACIVAT – I am more of quiet, sincere person I believe. I have never tried a Nishane Istanbul perfume but I would love to – I would love to try ZENNE most of all. I am in the US 🙂

    “Zenne” – sounds like a perfect fragrance for me who likes grapefruit and wild bunches of flowers. The idea of creating fragrances which hark back to the great turkish tradition of shadowplay in combination with the stock characters used is fantastic. I hope “Nishane” will become more and more popular – in politically and economically hard times under President Erdogan, creating a perfume can also be an act of rebellion.

    I love every kind of popular entertainment that uses puppets, shadows, silouettes, etc. In the tradition of many countries there is this kind of expression, and I appreciated the choice of Murat and Mert to be inspired by this ancient form of art. Karagoz is the character closer to me and it’s my choice in the draw.

    I so love the shadow play theme. I think Karagoz sounds more fitting of my liking. ..plus it holds that pineapple note / grape note. Yes! I’ve been watching Sebastian on his channel Looking Feeling Smelling great for nearly a year now and value his take on fragrances. I’ve also recently sampled 6 other fragrances by Nishane and Wulong Chai is excellent but I’m still waiting for twistedlily to send me Suede Safran, I have a feeling I’m going to like that one as well!     I love the idea of a perfume as storytelling, and extending it to a shadowplay puppetry. KARAGOZ is probably my character but I’d have to go for the ZENNE scent – perhaps the sexy hidden side of a gruff traveller.

    The review made it clear Nishane has tried a different path with these three perfumes. The original Nishane creations are quite oriental while these three are refreshing as Sebastian noted. I also enjoyed the artwork that inspired the fragrances. My choice will be KARAGOZ. I am in the U.S.

    Thanks for the interview & introduction of New Nishane trilogy. This time Nishane triplet plays Turkish puppetry which reminds me TV puppet show called “UNCLE SARGAM”, when I was teen. Never tried any of Nishane fragrances but most of them are on my want list. If I win my choice is Nishane HHACIVAT.

    Thanks again for the wonderful video Sebastian, these all sound very amazing, Bieng an artist myself I would probably lean towards trying Hacivet first before the other two, the opening of the bergamot, pineapple and grapefruit just sound amazing.     It is really hard to pick one, I know how beautiful many of the Nishane fragrances are and very unique in many ways. I love Munegu and Duftbluten, both are beautiful and smell so different from what I have…..if I had to chose one of the ones offered I think it would be Zenne becaue what woman does not want to smell like a flirtatious Beauty <3 I am in the US and thank you for this wonderful generosity!

    Nishane has a great aesthetic, love the bold use of solid colors that hearken to Turkey. Seeing the puppets in action was a treat, and I’d have to say I see myself most as Karagoz but the perfume Zenne lures me with her rhubarb.

    I have smelled ZENNE just for a moment in Esxence, there was too many things to smell and it’s a pitty I forgot my favourite of the 3 new ones, but Iremember it was ZENNE the one I liked the most. Hundred Silent Ways was also lovely, I remember this one, but I feel now I would like to have a whole sample set to discover in calm at home 😉

    Originated form Greece shadow playing was part of my childhood. We grew up with the tales of karagoz but sorry for that my old friend I have fallen in love with Hacivat and his mesmerising little description! Good luck to everyone, thank you Sebastian for providing us with this chance.

    I simply adore Nishane and their creations. My most favorite is Suede et Safran, but I also love Patchouli Kozha. I enjoyed the whole interview because this was the first time I was able to see and listen to Murat. Sebastian does such a good job with asking the right questions and keeps the interview so alive. 🙂 My favorite one from the new collection is Karagoz.

    I think Karagoz is more in line in with my character, being bright(pineapple) yet dark at the same time.

    Unfortunately, I have never tried a Mistake Istanbul fragrance.

I have really been into pineapple notes as of lately and I love Sebastian channel since he always gives a very good explanation about the perfumes he talks about and the people he interviews.     Sebastian is very good at explaining these scents. I had some trouble picking a character, at first I thought Zenne because it shows a woman, but I don’t consider myself a flirt so then I looked more at the notes of each and chose Karagon. I have never tried any scents from this house, but would love to give them a chance. I live in the Central US, thanks for the giveaway!

    This video was great because it felt intimate. The design was well executed as it is really hard to choose. The puppets are a great inspiration. I would choose Zenne based on notes and personality. I have never tried Nishane Istanbul and I live in the USA

    Every video from Sebastian is fun to watch as he is sincere and really focuses on what’s important in a fragrance. In this video it was nice to see the person behind the line, and to see the ideas and the thought process that went towards creating the fragrances.

    Based on the notes, I think the fragrance I would more likely like is Karagoz, but based on the puppet, I’m more of a Hacivat. 😀
    I haven’t tried anything from the line. Would love to, though!

    What I liked about the video was the story behind the perfumes. It is always interesting to see new ideas.
    If I had to choose a puppet, it would probably be the girl, Zenne.
    I’ve never tried a Nishane perfume, so I cannot choose a favorite.

    I can relate to Hacivat the most, and no surprise that scent is the most attractive to me as well. From older releases Tuberoza and Fan your flames are favourites for me.

    Long time subsciber for Sebastian’s videos-since his old chanel “Man Love Cologne”.

    I would like to test all Nishane fragrances, but now I prefere Hacivat.
    I hope Hacivat is great as another pineapple fragrance- Aventus for Him Creed.

    I loved the video just liked any other Sebastian’s ones because he’s so passionate about what he does, he’s also very detailed into explaining smells and I like the fact that we have similar tastes, especially for strong, balsamic and leathery perfumes that usually wouldn’t fit a 19 years old girl.

    I would like to have you pick out the best perfume for me, based on the fact that I love gripping, intoxicated scents like saffron, smoke and wood that are not too fruity or sweet, and I think HACIVAT would probably be the best.

    I’m a perfume lover and collector who’s in love with Arabic colognes so I think this one cannot be missed in my collection
