Esxence 2016~New Fragrance Review: Fath’s Essentials Green Water + “Whenever You Are Away from Me” Draw

There’s just something about Green Water.  It’s as spritely and invigorating as it is calm and relaxing.  For many, many years its charms have enticed many a nose with its citrus fresh floral and herbal magic wafting ever so gently off the bodies of men both young and old.  I vividly remember the first time I encountered a vintage bottle at an antique store.  I opened the lid and was immediately enveloped in a cloud of lemony citrus and mint that brought to mind Limonana (a Middle Eastern iced lemon drink) that I had in Tel Aviv a few years prior that I really didn’t much care for.  I left the bottle sitting on the shelf and went on about my business because, quite frankly, mint is not my favorite note in fragrances and the associations I make to it are just too vivid.   However, the historian in me made me think otherwise and I I went back to get it.

Unbelievably, a very fashionable older woman had grabbed the bottle before I could get my hands on it. The look on my face when I saw her smiling ear to ear with it in her clutches must have been something to behold.  I was so dismayed…I hadn’t given it a fair chance and it haunted me for several days until I could not stand it anymore.

I acquired a bottle of the modern EDT a short time later.  It’s definitely a nice fragrance that wears more like cologne.  The mint in it is just right.  It works very nicely with a few herbs to add lift and extenuate the effect of cologne typical citrus (lemon, lime, orange).  With this version I get a hint of the Limonana from Tel Aviv, but it’s not anywhere near as potent as the first impression from the vintage (the mint here is less pronounced and there is more emphasis on lime and orange in this formulation).  Shortly thereafter neroli and jasmine come in to add a nice floral dimension as the mint takes on a more powdered facet.  In ways, it reminds me of powdered soap layered over classic eau de cologne and spearmint.  I quite like it, but it’s first impression is definitely different than what I remembered.

Now here we are in 2016 and Green Water has yet again come into my life.  This time as part of the new Fath's Essentials line in EDP strength and authored by Cécile Zarokian based on her impressions while working with Jean Kerléo dissecting and reinterpreting the original Vincent Roubert creation.   Let me just say that she nailed my first impressions that I remembered with this one.  However, the association that I made previously has now changed to the adoration I should have ascribed to the original.

So yes, I prefer Mme Zarokian’s interpretation BETTER than the original!  Immediately out of the bottle it presents itself as cool and refreshing with a sprightliness to it that immediately makes me want to sing and dance and enjoy all that is lovely in the world with a nicely romanticized  Limonana in my hand whilst doing it (suddenly I like it better than I remembered).

“Whenever You’re Away From Me”  Gene Kelly with Olivia Newton John 1980

The olfaction brings to mind something, rather someone person in particular…Gene Kelly.  For some reason I can see this on him as a both a younger and an older man.  I have no idea if he wore it or had anything to do with it, but it’s aura reminds me of him.  There's certainly a romantic springiness to it that recalls yesteryear that is still forever modern and new.  In fact, his duet “Whenever You’re Away From Me” with Olivia Newton-John immediately comes to mind.  Fond memories of future past, if you know the context of the movie (Xanadu)  the song appeared in.

After the cool refreshing spritz of mintiness a gigantic cloud of neroli comes into play… a very green with life neroli that is.  It is so incredibly lively!  What’s interesting is that there is also a subtle hint of what comes off as rubber lingering in the mix.  It lasts for several minutes and is it ever marvelous – it adds another manly aspect that I frankly was not expecting.  Almost like a man has been working at flower farm or citrus grove and burned a little bit of rubber on his rush home for his hot date.  Love it.  I’m also getting a subtle hint that the neroli is taking on some more  the indolic aspects of jasmine along with its own indolic character, but not overly so.  Herbs also play a mighty roll here.  I get a nice mix of a few, but to my nose tarragon seems to star a bit more than the others (namely basil and a bit of caraway).   The citrus has morphed and become more orangey than lemony.  There is definitely a similarity here with the EDT I currently own.  However, the intensity is amped up about 50 times.

As we move into the drydown vetiver becomes evident and soon dominates.  It’s clever in that it’s dry.  The wet juiciness of the fruit and the minty zing have given way to a slight saltiness (I’m attributing this to ambergris) and everything is smoothing out very nicely with a pristine air of dignity to it.  There is an ever so slight hint of powder (oak moss) present that never really crosses the line of powdery.  In the final drydown a gentle musk begins to peek out now and again.  It’s just enough to know it’s there.  However, after the vetiver has all but dissipated, the musk lightly remains as the final note in the song.  Nice.

Overall, I do not think any better justice could have been done with this homage to the past.  The ghost of the original is ever present and its spirit lives on to make more memories in this current incarnation for many years to come.  The EDP wears fairly close to the skin and has a longevity of about 6 hours (slightly longer if sprayed on fabric).  It would make a wonderful choice for casual spring and summer wear, but would also work as a formal scent for all seasons.  In other words, it would be very difficult to go wrong with Fath's Essentials Green Water.

  • Oh my god–I love Fath fragrances, and I cannot wait to try these. My different-generation pairing? Imagine Joe Williams and China Moses. I live in the United States.

I like the review very much. Love the story about how you finally made friends with Green Water. Mint, neroli and jasmine – I am sure this is a very promising combination and hope there is a lot of mint and it does not wear off too quickly, which happens far too often (after two minutes I cannot detect any mint in otherwise wonderful Violette-Menthe by Brosseau, what a shame!)

I love listening to Marianne Faithful singing with James Hetfield/Metallica in “The memory remains”.

  • Very nice review! Green Water sounds fabulous. I would very like to try it. I would like to see Marilyn Manson and Rihanna paired together. Thank you for this amazing draw! I live in Europe.

  • MikasMinion says:

Green Water sounds wonderful. I love mint in fragrances, but haven’t found many where the rest of the notes wow me. I also love Jacques Fath’s sportswear designs from the forties and early fifties and never knew there was a perfume line until recently.
As for the cross generational pairing, I can’t think of any where one of the pair isn’t dead so my choice certainly won’t come true. I think David Bowie and Agnes Obel would have been a fascinating pair, with their beautiful voices and vastly different styles.
    I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • There could be no better perfume recomendation than this statement: „Immediately out of the bottle it presents itself as cool and refreshing with a sprightliness to it that immediately makes me want to sing and dance and enjoy all that is lovely in the world”.
Google for „Spectacular Salsa  Paddy and Nico Britains Got Talent 2014” and you’ll see the most amazing dancing pair crossing the boundary of age and generation.
Fingers crossed for winning this draw! Europe.

  • I’d never heard of Green Water, but it sounds like a great summer scent indeed. Thismis fantastic praise for a new formulation: “Overall, I do not think any better justice could have been done with this homage to the past.”

I enjoyed Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga together so much! I think it would’ve been great to see/hear Dean Martin with a contempory singer – maybe Amy Winehouse. I could imagine them giving each other a lot of grief.

    In the US. Cheers!

Citrus and mint? What a winning combination for summer. Aaron’s review really gives me a visceral sense of just how delicious and refreshing Green Water must be! I love herbal fragrances in the spring and summer, and in some cases, I even wear them in the fall because I love them so much and cannot bear to put them away for longer than absolutely necessary!

I’ve also been interested in exploring more vetiver fragrances, and this sounds like one recipe I definitely must try.

My pairing would be from the world of dance, but would combine dancers of different times and different genres: ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky and flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés. I would love to see Nijinsky (okay, I think the rest of the world would be on board with that too), but I really don’t know whether his classical ballet tradition would be welcoming to influences from other areas of dance! And I cannot think of a single type of person who would not mind watching Joaquín Cortés for a while.

    I am in the US.

  • Xanadu was my first album!!… vinyl, of course. I had to get it after seeing the movie as a young adolescent.

Wonderfully written review, very whimsical and lyrical, and a scent I would love to experience.

I loved his recount of smelling the perfume for the first time at the antique shop, setting down the bottle, and having it snatched up before he could get back to it. A similar phenomenon frequently happens to me if I put my attention on something. If I walk away to think about it, and sometimes while I am still looking at an item thinking about it, I often don’t get time to make a decision before someone swoops in to grab it. The item could have been sitting there for weeks.

As for the multi-generational pairing. I would love to have seen a sassy little ballroom number (or elegant, endearing, tender number) with the late Barbara Stanwyck and Bradley Cooper. I can envision a very moving heart-tugger.

    Peru.

  • What a generous prize. I could smell the mint on a hot summer day reading this. ……>”The wet juiciness of the fruit and the minty zing have given way to a slight saltiness (I’m attributing this to ambergris) and everything is smoothing out very nicely with a pristine air of dignity to it.” Pairing: Elvis and Taylor Swift. 🙂 usa

  • Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett amazing chemistry. The fragrance sounds fresh and interesting, I have not experienced a stand out mint note in a fragrance. This definitely sounds like a perfect scent for summer or the office. It is always fun reading about new yet old things……I am in the US

  • fazalcheema says:

It is a Cecile creation so I am confident it is well done and the review also indicates it is probably even better than the original because Cecile’s creation better reflects the modern tastes. My favorite dance was without a doubt Michael Jackson. His pairing would Jennifer Lopez would have been magical. I am in the US

  • Lellabelle says:

I love mint in perfume and this sounds absolutely wonderful. Cecile Z seems to have a remarkable talent for creativity balanced with a technical artistry that enables her to hit a very specific target – genuinely rate in fragrance. I predict many more great things for her!

I have no idea which fictional dance pairing I would request, but please enter me for the generous draw (thank you Panouge and Jacques Fath Paris, as well as Cafleurebon). Would love to own green water and its tonic effect would be most welcome! Canada, please.

  • I liked the review and found it amusing, especially this part: “makes me want to sing and dance and enjoy all that is lovely in the world”. As for the old generation/new generation duo, I’d like to see a collaboration between Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon. I’m in the US.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I like the descreption of the perfume as beeing so incredibly lively – this is what I am looking for in a spring/summer scent.

    Thnaks for the draw!

  • Hello,

I like your mention of mint and also the note of rubber…Both are potentially problematic notes for me to experience, but generally they work out pretty well! I would love for Nat King Cole to have paired in a duet with Corinne Bailey Rae. Hard to compete with Cole’s duets with his daughter Natalie, though…Rest in Peace.

    I live in NYC.

    Cheers and Thanks!

  • I wasn’t familiar with Jaques fath green water by I am looking to fing a great fragrance with mint and this may be it!
It’s very impressive that Cecile asked the advice of Jean Kerléo
I think a great pair would be Tammy Wynette and Carrie underwood

  • I was not familiar with the vintage version of this, but nice to know that you like the remake even better! I love to wear refreshing scents when the heat sets in here in Texas. My favorite dance scene is the one in White Christmas with Vera Ellen. That woman could dance! I live in USA.

  • I am just loving the idea of a scent being sprightly! What an apt description of this kind of summery scent! I think it would be fun to hear Ella Fitzgerald with Adam Levine–I think they could both build on each others’ styles 🙂 Thanks for the draw! I am in the EU.

  • Thanks for the post – I liked the freshness of this review, and how nostalgic I got for the 80s. I love an herby heady fragrance. I would love to see Josephine Baker paired with Maddie Ziegler, both very interpretive dancers. Thanks for the draw; i’m in Canada. 🙂

  • I love it when a crispy green fragrance has some unusual hint like rubber tone or something equally unconventional. Thank you Aaron for the great review!
It would be nice to hear Andrea Bocelli with 50Cent.
    I live in the EU.

  • Who doesn’t like cool and refreshing fragrances? This would work perfect in our weather right now and the reform sound better than the original. Another great gem from Cecile.

I like the current combo of Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Kinda odd. But cool. I live in the US. Thanks

  • I don’t think I have ever tried or worn anything from Fath. A new modern summer fragrance with a pedigree could just what I need this year. I always enjoy the nostalgia perfume ads. I’m pairing up Fred Astaire and Jennifer Lopez to dance. USA

  • I am so glad there was a happy ending to Aaron’s journey with this scent! I’d love to hear a collaboration between Billie Holiday and Maynard James Keenan.

  • rodelinda says:

I happen to love mint in a fragrance, so when the review mentioned mint my ears perked up a little. It sounds very refreshing for summer. I’d have fun hearing what Louis Prima and Regina Spektor could create together. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I like the 80’s memories of this review and the idea of a refreshing mint scent for hot summer. I would like to see Pina Bausch dancing with the music of Michael Nyman.
    I’m in EU. Thanks!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Love the way this cool and refreshing scent was described here! Classical sensibilities and modern merged. Misty Copeland and Martha Graham would be two dance prodigies from different eras that I’d love to see working together. Loved Aaron’s top-basenotes description of the olfactory journey! I’m in the US and thanks for the draw.

  • Elizabeth T says:

What a draw! Pairing this with Gene Kelly instantly perked up my ears… he is my favorite! I would pair him with Anna Pavlova. I love classic colognes, and would love to try this…
I’m in the USA. Thank you!!!

  • I’m glad there is a happy ending to the tragic vintage incident! I also love that a scent gave Aaron such a specific physical reaction. As for my odd-couple pairing, I’m going to have to go with Mozart and Daft Punk. Mix Mozart’s catchy melodies with Daft Punk’s beats and you’ve got summer jams to last a lifetime. Thanks for the draw! I live in the USA

  • This was an excellent review and I look forward to trying this fragrance with the notes of mint, neroli, and jasmine! This sounds amazing and ideal for the hot summer weather. I would pair Misty Copeland with Maksim Chmerkovskiy as they would be a strange but ideal pair in my head. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

  • I must confess quite similar thinking with Chanel 19. Knowing a few elderly ladies fond of this scent and using it way too generously I just could not convince myself to test in on my own skin. But when I did, I discover a very wearable and even rebellious composition which is now one of my top ten summer fragrances.
If I could, I would love to see Pina Bausch dancing with some young breakdance artist!
EU here and thanks for the draw!

  • I have never tried the original version. But the reform sounds great. The blend of notes are right up my alley and would work in my weather. I live in the US. Thanks

  • I love that Aaron went from disliking to loving this fragrance. Aquired tastes are the ones you end up liking the most, I think. I’m curious to try out this retake of a classic. It’s so nice when they get it right! My favourite intergenerational pairing has already happened: Nick Cave and Johnny Cash. I live in Canada, thanks.

  • I loved the review!! I really felt for Aaron when he changed his mind and went back to get the original, I have made similar mistakes and I now follow my instinct more. I’d love to try the new version I really like green fragrances! My favorite dancer of all times is Fred Astaire! I am in the UK

  • I do love the all the notes mentioned above.Neroli-mint-vetiver and the like.I would like to see how it smells on my skin.I really font of fresh-citrus fragrances.I live in Greece.Maybe a good pair would be Madona-Gaga.Ty for the draw!!!

  • Aimee l'Ondee says:

I really love hearing about how different formulations stack up, and I love the story about the chi lady who nabbed that vintage bottle! I’d like to see Misty Copeland and Michail Baryshnikov dancing together, in a magical universe. Both are so beautiful and athletic as dancers. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I love green fragrances, “green” not only in notes but also having green liquid. And Green Water is really green! It reminds me of some magic elixir enriched with incredible forces of nature. I’m sure I will love the scent.

I’d love to hear Nat King Cole with Adele.

I live in Norway and thanks for the draw!

  • Miss Almond says:

Wow! Jaques Fath again! Last year I fell in love with Vers Le Sud and I also like very much Curacao Bay. Looks like there is another great scent by Fath waiting for me to discover. I love mint and perhaps I would be a little confused about that rubber tone. I definitely have to test Green Water.

My type is Johnny Cash with Lady Gaga.

I live in the EU and thank you for the draw

  • echinacea says:

I enjoyed the review as much as I love Gene Kelly. I simply must try this scent as soon as possible!
My favorite couple of different generations are Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in “Lost in translation”.
I live in the EU. Thanks!

  • Great read and gorgeous looking fragrance! I would love to hear Michael Jackson with John Legend. Thanks for the draw and I’m in Canada

  • Wayne Hollander says:

Very well done, I could actually follow the “symphony” movement by movement! My current wardrobe is very thin on anything light and refreshing….and my bottle of L’Occitane The Menthe au Verte just isued it’s last! It’s odd….my first fragrance love affair was Eau Sauvage. This sounds dreamy and a wonderful thing to get lost in during hot sticky New York City summer! I am AGOG at any reference to XANADU – loved it, and loved your use of the Olivia/GK pairing here. On the soundtrack I loved the “mashup” song she did with the Tubes 🙂 I REALLY hoped hoped hoped to see my childhood goddess DONNA SUMMER duet with either Madonna or Lady Gaga (yes I’m a disco dork!); sadly that is unlikely – though who knows what with newfangled technology! Thanks for another great piece & cheers from New York New York!

  • I think an Elvis with Lady Gaga duo would be amazing! This scent sounds great for the warm weather. I will definitely be checking this out in the future!

Thanks for the draw. I’m a Canadian reader

  • I simply adore all notes mentioned in this lovely reviw. Neroli, vetiver, mint all blend perfectly together for the summer season. I believe that some times newest version of a perfume can be better than the original ones so I first test and try to decide on a new perfume buy.
I do like and prefer to wear fresh-citrus fragrances during hot days especially here in Greece where I live because the weather is really hot and you need something refreshing to smell.
A pair that I would love to see dancing is Michael Baryshnikov and Misty Copeland since both are my very favorite ones.
I am so a registered reader living in EU, Greece.
Thank you both for the lovely review and draw.
