An Easy to Wear Green Fragrance: Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz “Vert Pour Madame” + Sophia Loren Draw

Vintage. Green. Adelhydes. Three words that did not exist in my fragrance vocabulary…that is until Vert Pour Madame by DSH Perfumes

If I can wear ‘green’, so can you. On her website, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz writes that Vert Pour Madame was “Inspired by the utterly chic and sophisticated style of the late 1970's and early 1980's classic green floral chypre”. Originally inspired by Catherine Deneuve,(DSH had a fragrance once called Deneuve as well)

For me, it’s Sophia Loren circa 1963

Vert pour Madame is an olfactive ode to the fruity chypre in all its mesmerizing glory beginning  with notes of Bergamot, Cassis, Neroli, Jasmine Sambac and Galbanum; the vulnerable secrets of her floral heart is expressed in Jasmine, Bulgarian Rose, and precious Orris. It  all about the sexy here at the base; Patchouli, Musk and Tonka  are the satin gloves unlacing Madame’s bodice.

OMG…i can wear green and i can wear fragrances….and picking my favorite DSH is difficult, but let me just say…that the Verte pour Madame is soooooooo beautiful, you will not regret ever getting this one. My other Favorites are…Cimabue, American Beauty, 1000Lilies, Sampsuchinon and there are many more. You did it again Dawn!!!!!!!

  • Green is my favorite perfume type,,,,hands down!!!  Chanel 19 is a stunner!!  I love DSH's Tuberose, which I obtained in a cute little coffret of flasks at her Boulder store (cute)!  This new one, Vert pour Madame sounds absolutely wonderful to me!!  Oh,,,I also love Dawn's Dirty Rose!!  Oh, I forgot Majorn,,a warm spicy number, too!!!

  • I read the post and was thinking "A green chypre? Too bad, I love DSH, but I can't seem to wear green fragrances," and then I saw the request for comments on why we have difficulties.

Personally, I'm still trying to figure out why so many greens behave so badly on my skin, and I've been on a quest for a green fragrance that actually works (my husband loves that style, so the search continues). Vetiver Dance was a scrubber, No. 19 was awful, so was Cristalle, Silences didn't work, Balmy Days and Sundays – no – Private Collection…ugh… Lime Basil and Mandarin was another scrubber, O de Lancome gets shrieky, and so on, and so on. The only thing that's been lovely thus far is Vetiver pour Elle, I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

Interestingly enough, Dawn recommended a few months ago that her Celadon might work on me, so it's been on my mental list as I resume sampling the greens once again this spring.

I love DSH's Dirty Rose, I love green scents as a rule (No. 19 is perfection), and green is one of my favorite colors. I hope you pick me!

  • Z. Boudreaux says:

I haven't gotten around to trying any of DSH's perfumes yet but there are several that I've read reviews on that I'd love to try. It seems that "green" is in the air for perfumery. Recently reading Nathan Branch's blog with letters between Mandy Aftel and working with Galbanum and now this post…. I'm excited to continually be prompted to check them out!

  • Thank you for this magical post, Michelyn!  You got the green so right!!  You know, the historical perfume that most inspired "Vert" is Deneuve; it has many notes in common, especially the hyacinth, lily of the valley and cedar.  I'm glad that I changed the base to include the rich resin drydown which helps the whole scent work so well.  It thrills me to know that I have created a green that works for you! 🙂

  • Suzanne Wlaschin says:

Ummm – how about – I've never really had the chance to smell any of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz' fragrances, and I love green fragrances?  Shouldn't that put me in the running for the draw/?  ;  )

  • Have only sampled Oeillets Rouges and that is spectacular, and in my head I have built up American Beauty as a classic that I will love-really want to try this one,No.19 fan and my first ever perfume was the original Scherrer back in the eighties-'verde que te quiero verde'!!

  • Green is my favorite color but I don't have a lot of favorite "green" fragrances. I would love to try this one. My favorite DSH is Jitterbug. My fave green scents are: Silences, Chamade, untitled, vintage Vent Vert.

  • I have no difficulties wearing green- it is my favourite type of perfume! Vent Vert (all formulas) Eau de Campagne, Bel Respiro, YSL Y, Silences, Aliage….etc….and I have DSH Ivoire, which is bright & clean with a ittle green. Verte Pour Madame sounds lovely!

  • I wish I could find a green scent to love. I'm still looking for my Holy Grail. I tried with Demeter Wet Garden and I like it, but not completely. I like A Scent by Issey Miyake and it's almost what I'm looking for, but not yet. I have problems with galbanum, no doubt. If that's the main note in a perfume, I can't wear it easily. So far, my favorite green note is vetiver.
I have not tried any DSH perfume, so please enter me in the draw 🙂

  • ANARCHY! Definitely Anarchy…it's got everything and more- floral, spice, masculine, feminine- perfect!

  • Green parfums sometimes reminds me too much of the lambing barn on my parents farm. 😛  I try to like them.  It just reminds me of doing chores LOL

  • As with many of the others commenting, I can wear green fragrances and would love to try Vert pour Madame. For me it is the gourmand fragrances I have trouble with as my skin seems to make them even sweeter or perhaps it is just my nose that finds them too sweet.
The only DSH fragrance I have tried so far is Mata Hari from the Outlaw Perfume Project. It is definitely the voluptuous chypre Dawn describes it to be.
I'm pleased that Dawn made a convert of you to the fabulous fragrance genre of green chypre — at least the fruity version.

  • Cimabue is my absolute favorite DSH.  It's cozy and envelopes one in "warmth" .  I don't like a lot of "green" fragrances, but I love the top notes of Philosykos and Carnal Flower, which are both very "green".

    Best,
    Geordan

  • I love Gelsomino – it's a really lovely jasmine, neither clean nor too indolic.  And I love a lot of green fragrances so I'm really looking forward to trying this.

  • Hmmm, perhaps the advice for Dionne is what I need as well.  Need to explore that.

I received Dawn's Holiday Collection sampler set last year as a gift and December and Winter White were my favorites from the group.  However, my all time favorite is still St. Valentine.

  • I recently had the chance to try Dawn's "Vert Pour Madame" and it is gorgeous!  I absolutely loved it–so classy and green and smooth.  Way to go Dawn!  Vert Pour Madame is amazing.

i can't really pick one favorite DSH, but lately i've been wearing bancha with gay abandon, and will soon have to invest in a gallon.

  • Ooooh boy. I would have trouble picking a fav. DSH perfume, but will try to list a few favs. Cimabue, Minuit, Inner Sanctum, Nourouz, Dirty Rose, and that just touches the surface. I do love green and have no problems wearing fragrance;) Cannot wait to test this DSH as well.

  • FYI – Sophia Loen had an eponymous scent with Coty in the 80s – oriental.  I did not find a list of notes online.

  • This DSH fragrance sounds yummy. I can visualize a walking through a forest, and inhaling all the wonderful scents. How wonderful that would be….Especially in view of this COLD and icky winter.
I would love to try this intriguing perfume.!

  • DSH favorite? I have many. But at the moment it is Rouge Oeillet (sp?), a wonderful carnation that reminds me how lovely carnations were when I was a girl…not the lifeless unscented things you see today.  And Parrum de Grasse, absolutely beautiful for a spring feeling.

  • I love green in any form of expression. Fragrance, color, landscape, food.
DSH favorite? Cimabue, Route d'iris. It is really hard to decide.
Vert Pour Madame sounds amazing. Green floral chypre. I will give up chocolate for one week if it helps me with this draw. 🙂

  • green! my favorite color of all 🙂
i sometimes do have trouble wearing perfume when it distracts me too much – usually by brining back too many memories, good and sad, either way.

  • My favorite green list:
    color-green
    song-Green Is The Colour(Pink Floyd)
    perfume-Chamade(and a zillion others!)
I would really love to try Vert pour Madame. My favorite DSH perfume is Parfum de Luxe!

  • Oh, I have no problem wearing some greens — when they are dark they make my eyes look really green! There's one shade of green, though, the pale green that kills my complexion and gives me a look of a freshly dug up corpse. But I know, we're talking about fragrances here.  Well, DSH herself told me that I will have problem wearing some greens because my skin will accentuate the green notes and make them harsher.  She steered me away from grasses, as well as two florals that I shall not name but that are not present in the composition of Vert.
So far, my favorite Dawn's fragrance is Mahjoun.  I am still exploring.
