DSH Perfumes Paper White (Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz) 2018-New Fragrance Review + Mother’s Day Draw

Paperwhites by Susie Baird ©

Perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has had paperwhites (aka Narcissus papyraceus) on the brain of late: those trumpet-form corona, potently-scented perennials which favor their native Mediterranean clime from Greece to the Iberian peninsula and Northern Africa. These fragrant members of the daffodil family have seen fit to ‘naturalize’ themselves throughout the Azores, Corsica, Texas, California and Louisiana as well. Most of us think of them in the context of forcing their bulbs indoors for Christmas – and they can be forced, but it’s lovely to view and smell them in situ – in a natural setting surrounded by soil and sun where they obligingly hold court. After all, noblesse oblige.

Narcissus is the traditional harbinger of Spring; what a perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day.The narcissus family has had a long, illustrious and complex history pre-dating us by approximately 33.9 million years. Its very name is linked to the Greek word for ‘narcotic’ and has been associated over time with various themes ranging from death to good fortune. We’re all familiar with the cautionary Greek myth regarding youthful, beautiful Narcissus who tragically fell deeply in love with his own reflection (much to his own detriment). The deceptively simple-appearing elegant blossom possesses a remarkably intricate scent profile – and it takes someone with Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s skill to wrestle with a varied palette in order to conjure the complete experience for us. She has succeeded with a flourish. I know that it was a labor of love on her part; how fortunate we are to partake of her vernal passion.

The heart and the nose crave what they crave and we follow instinctively in their thrall. I smelt so many facets that I found it helpful to perform an uncharacteristic (writing-wise) breakdown of some of my observations, which I’d like to share with you. They are unguarded and immediate. It may help provide a sense of what is happening in this DSH Perfumes Paper White: a bit like a map, it indicates what you might see along the way without necessarily revealing how the journey will turn out.

Jonquil: heavy, honeyed, floral, green, balsamic

Narcissus: heavy, green, herbaceous, floral, balsamic, spicy, indolic, barnyard

Jasmine grandiflorum: very sweet, intensely floral, balsamic musky-indolic vanillic undertone; deep coumarin-like richness

Papyrus: umame, sweet, salty, rye bread, mushroom, soy, leathery

Tunisian neroli: luminous, citrus, floral, green, sunlit

Oakmoss: dry, earthy, bark overlying decaying leaf, lichen, damp soil, musty, inky

Mysore sandalwood: smooth, rich, creamy-sweet woody

Bergamot: citrus-fruity, herbaceous, juicy, balsamic

Earl Grey tea: tannic, fruity, dry, floral, astringent

Paper: woody, dry, vanillic, musty

We can smell an aromatic tapestry, yes? How adroitly the aspects of heft and the ethereal counterbalance one another. There is a communion of opposing elements – the dry with the damp, heavy with radiant, sweet with salt, creamy with tannic, astringent with juicy, earthy with celestial – losing none of their innate qualities while complementing one another and holding up a fragrant mirror.

This is partially what I meant by complex.

Looking Back Anne Siems©

DSH Perfumes Paper White is pure poetry. It commands your fifth sense, draws you in unreservedly and feels entirely natural, as if you were tarrying in the Garden Primaeval. It is a perfume of dualities: one smells knowingness lurking beneath the initial impression of sun, innocence, illumination. Its organic, strangely arresting beauty feels truthful and utterly persuasive, haunting:elegance which satiates one’s lust for the unique exceptional aromatic garment trailing behind like a gossamer mantle floating upon the passing zephyr. Notes: bergamot, Earl Grey tea accord, Tunisian neroli, paper accord, jonquil absolute, narcissus absolute, grandiflorum jasmine absolute, Mysore sandalwood, papyrus, oakmoss.

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer. My nose is my own…

Paper White Narcissus, are intoxicating and I’d love to smell Dawn’s aromatic tapestry of so many beautiful strands! I don’t have a favorite DSH perfume. I’m in the US and thank you for this review and drawing.

  • This sounds like a map of many discoveries – a bit like a detective trying to figure out all of the notes. Indeed Paper white seems to be the perfect spring scent. Narcissus bloom so wonderfully, but if inclement weather comes along they become a shadow of their former selves.

I adore many of Dawn’s fragrances but two favourites have to be Souvenir de Malmaison and l’Opera des Rouges et des Roses.

I’m in the Uk – thank you for the draw and the chance to win this beauty.

  • I’ve only recently been fortunate enough to sample her perfumes and was completely smitten! I absolutely adore Paper White flowers , so immediately had to enter! I’m in the US and would be just over the moon to try this one!
Thank you so so much !

  • Thank you so very much, Ida, and Michelyn for always creating a truly poetic journey that is beautifully dream like. <3 I'm delighted and humbled by the loveliness of this post. ( I agree completely with Hikmat!)

I like narcissus, but when its not so herval or bitter.
    This perfume sounds very beatiful.
Unfortunatly I have never tested any DSH perfumes.

This sounds wonderful! I love DSH and narcissus. I love the idea of “knowingness” lurking beneath the innocence on top. DSH has made some of my favorite scents including scent of hope, passport a Paris and twelfth night. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • The papyrus, neroli, bergamot, tea, and jasmin make this sound like itll be nice for the summer. I’m not sure if I’ve tried DSH scents. I know i dont have any full bottles, but id have to see my sample/decant collection to see if I have any. I’m in the US

  • Absolutely love the breakdown descriptions of all the notes. My nose is twitching, LOL. In the US.

  • Everything about this review is amazing! The scent sounds so beautiful.

Just the note list alone makes this special! What a great review by Ida.
I have long known of Dawn’s work for a long time and still have a good amount of samples, I only dab so they last a good while.
2 of my favorites from DSH are: The Voices of Trees and Become the Shaman, just love the names! Before the week is over, I will be placing an order for Lilas de Minuit!
What is taking me so long!!
Thank you for a chance in the draw.

  • Catanosmia says:

I have only sampled Dawn’s work so far and I’m still left unsure where to begin with a full bottle–I’m completely spoiled for choice! She is a true artist and this fragrance sounds as amazing as everything I’ve tried thus far. I’d love to spend a day (or 10) in her shop sniffing my way through her creations. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • Dear Dawn: it could only be Susie Baird!!!
Immediately discernible on sight. What a joy!
Paper*White is such a gorgeous thing – and Michelyn chose the perfect images. I love the ink/mixed media.

    You inspire!

  • Oh wow what a prize. I can say that all those notes sound appealing – I am a lover of narcissus and have not found a frag that captures its beauty – nor have I smelled a DSH perfume. Would love to win this!! It sounds ethereal and transcendent.

    I am in Melbourne Australia

  • Richard Potter says:

Another killer review, Ida! And it sounds like another killer masterpiece from Dawn, our sorceress of scent. This one has my name all over it. I love the scent of paperwhites. Years ago, Pottery Barn had paperwhite- scented pillar candles which I loved. Can’t wait to try this.

  • So lovely! I can only imagine how beautiful this smells with jonquil and earl gray tea notes! This sounds like the perfect Mother’s Day fragrance! I’ve never tried anything from DSH so this new scent is going on my wish list! I live in the U.S.

  • I enjoyed reading Ida’s review, the perfume sounds so beautiful. Based on the name I wouldn’t have thought that there were so many notes/facets to the perfume.
    Perfect spring perfume!
I’m in the US, SW Michigan, where we are enjoying daffodils after the snow/cold has finally left us.
    Thanks for the draw!

Dawn’s perfumes are journeys! I am enjoying her recent Lilas de Minuit so much. It really does take me to the moon and back. Ida, thank you for the road map on this one.

  • An amazing prize! I wanted to smell this as soon as I read: “a bit like a map, it indicates what you might see along the way without necessarily revealing how the journey will turn out.” Paper White sounds perfect for the warmer days (and I love the name).

It is always a treat to try a new Dawn creation. My DSH favorite is probably Scent of Hope, not only because it is a masterpiece, but also because it has a personal meaning for me. I also love Minuit, Cinnabue, the Passport to Paris collection, Vert pour Madame, Vintage Patchouly and Foxy (aka is it getting hot in here?)

    I am n the U.S.

I planted daffodils yesterday and savored their lovely aroma while I could. It is interesting that this interpretation paperwhite has so many layers, even an earl gray note. It sounds like a beautiful etherial creation, another wonderful offering by DSH. I have tried many from this house and my all-time favorite is Cimabue. Thank you for this chance and I live in the US.

  • I would really love to try this new Dawn creation. My favourite juice from DSH perfumes is Vanille Botanique. Thanks for the draw, i live in the EU.

  • Beautiful review! Paper White sounds wonderfully from the base of the review and of the notes. I would very love to try it. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I’m a huge fan of narcissus and the other notes that Ida remarked upon also draw my interest. Amuse Bouche and Passport a Paris are my favorite DSH perfumes that I’ve sampled. I’m in the U.S. and would love to try Paper White.

  • Paper, papyrus, and tea? Fascinating! and to smell these notes swirling in the air with jonquil and narcissus sounds delightful. Thank you, Ida, for the review, it felt immediate and stream of consciousness in a delightful manner. I am in the US and do not recall ever sniffing a perfume from DSH. Thank you for the generous draw, and for the lovely words and artwork as well.
