DSH Perfumes Habibi (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2017 – New Fragrance Review + Layla and Majnun Draw

My love, my darling, my baby, my sweetheart – these are a few of the English terms of endearment for the lovers in our lives, expressions that can be represented by the Arabic word Habibi (or the feminine Habibta, my angel). Habibi is also the name of the new fragrance by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, created in a classically Middle Eastern style.

Perfumes can paint pictures, tell stories, evoke and restore memories and even sing to our imaginations of romance and epic poetry; songs of long ago and far away. For me, the scent profile of DSH Perfumes' Habibi, which she created as homage to orange blossoms and honey, recalls the love story of Layla and Majnun, a popular 7th century Arabian romance made famous in verse by the 12th century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. Wearing Habibi I envision the childhood sweethearts, the girl Layla al Aamiriya (Layl, ليل for the night, the color of her shining dark hair) and her young, would-be lover Qays ibn al-Mulawwah, known as Majnun, the possessed one, mad with passion and burning with desire for his darling Layla

My vision of Habibi opens to a full moon on a summer evening. The swirling scent of burning oud, kissed with a hint of metallic saffron and bright bergamot, illuminates the midnight tryst of the innocent pair. The sweethearts find themselves in a mysterious garden, a grove where citrus trees bloom, filling the humid night air with the rich and heady scent of orange blossoms and honey.  Majnun offers his love a bouquet of jasmine, champaca and roses.  Layla proffers her youthful Habibi a glass of wine, scented with musk.

Their lips do not meet or even touch the glass, but both are intoxicated by the dusky aroma, by the perfumes of the flowers and trees, the honey, the air of the shadowy moonlit garden and by the their unrequited passion for one another. For two hours and more I dream of Layla and Majnun, the star crossed lovers whose story is often told as a metaphor for Divine love.  Habibi slowly dries down, very close to the skin. The saffron and oud combine with sandalwood, opoponax and castoreum creating a subtle impression of scented leather. Orange blossoms and honey are woven skillfully through Habibi from the first breath to the last lingering sigh.

Six hours pass. The dawn is breaking. The scent of Habibi and my vision of the sweethearts vanish, leaving only a trace of orange blossoms, honey and musk as a remembrance, a fading memory of a lost love.

Notes: Spanish orange flower absolute, Arabian jasmine, honey, beeswax, bergamot, champaca absolute, Turkish rose otto, sandalwood, castoreum, opoponax and oud.

Many thanks to Dawn Spencer Hurwitz and DSH Perfumes for the generous sample of Habibi.  My opinions are my own.

Gail’s review was beautiful! What appeals most to me of the review, all of it!! This was so wonderful that it made me want to live with this perfume for an eternity, alone and in love with this and only this❤️❤️
    I am in the USA.

  • I just love calling people ‘darling’ in a generic sense but the love of my life was called ‘agapi mou” as our language of love was greek.Gail has build up the atmosphere of waiting- the delight of waiting- the intoxication that’s created by the imagination, the fantasy and in this case fragrance- the sweetness, the sensuality, the innocence, Oud and all it encompasses and the enevitabitiy of the encounter- well that’s in my imagination too 🙂 To this moment Rubiyat is my favorite Dawn creation but as always- there’s room in my life for other loves. I see on Dawn’s website an amazing collection of beauties. I am in New Zealand.

  • What a lovely review! The story painted by Gail’s experience with Habibi was magical. I was transported to another land and time. Then left with the sorrow of ” a fading memory of a lost love.” I live in the US and would love to try Habibi.

  • This made me think of a lost love of mine (he who was called ‘The Lovely’. I have to say i adore so many of Dawn’s scents (and i have only tried a fraction of her output). Favourite would perhaps be Souvenir de Malmaison, a breathtakingly beautiful Carnation scent.
I live in the UK and would really love to own this prize! Thank you both for the draw.

  • Orange blossom, honey, oud, saffron, bergamot and rose, what can u ask more? 🙂 this sounds amazing. I live in EU and i would love to try this beauty. Thanks for the draw.

The details in the writing are what always get us wanting the scent! All of DSH is soooo nice!! We are in the USA, and Thank YOU again! 🙂

  • What a great review. I was really captivated by the image choices and story of the lovers. I love so much of Dawn’s work and woukd be thrilled to win and try this; one of my favorites is her Gingembre. I’m in the USA. Thanks for the opportunity! (I have no love but call a fave close friend “Booboo.”)

  • Gail’s review brought to me the “Layla and Majnun” story which I never heard of before. The scent portrayal seems to go hand in hand with the poem, and I liked what I read.
I have never tried a DSH perfume in the past, but I would start with “Le Smoking” or “Mata Hari” (or other chypre) if I were to sample some.
Regarding the endearment for the loved one, I am sorry, but this is a private matter.
    I live in the E.U.
    Thank you.

  • Gayle’s review is stunning. I love this story and these photos! And anything by Dawn is bound to be steller. I must admit my guilty pleasure, my daughter and I watch Housewives of NY together and I remember an episode a couple of years ago where they went to Morocco and LouAnn kept going around saying Habibi to everyone, so the word is not unfamiliar to me. And, I love orange blossom! USA

  • Love the notes! I love orange blossom in anything because it gives a clean, soapy feel to it. Plus, I love jasmine and rose combinations. I haven’t tried anything from DSH but browsing through their site, I love the notes in Souvenir de Malmaison.

    I live in the U.S.

  • I like Gail’s poetic style- very nice review!! Thank you!
Very sensual discribtion :Their lips do not meet or even touch the glass, but both are intoxicated by the dusky aroma, by the perfumes of the flowers and trees….”
I haven’t tried anything from DSH.

  • I like Arabic things. Arabic music, Arabic dresses, Arabic perfumes, which are so gorgeous. From this lovely review, Habibi sounds do wonderful. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • RoseMacaroon says:

For me, aside from the sumptuous notes and the impeccable DSH, the review has completely captivated me with the tie-ins to ArAsian and Persian sensibilities of romantic love as subject/inspiration. There’s a potent natural mood-enhancer if ever there was one! I love DSH, I’ll just put Le Smoking as my fave but each of them could be.
Thank you so much for the exquisite review!
    I’m in the US.

  • Gail brought to life this ancient yet yielding love story. I am always so impressed with the power of scent and the thoughts it sparks into the mind from each of the writers… What a perfect name for a Fragrance that is sure to be a DSH top seller. I call my special guy lover or amoureux and that is excatly how I introduce him to others.. Thanks for the brilliant review, exquisitely done Gail.. I am in the US,

What a nice review, with this beautiful story. Thanks Gail. I live in the EU, thanks for the draw! My favourite is Vanilla Bourbon Intense.

  • I have heard the romantic love story of Layla and Majnun before, but I never imagined the aromas behind/around it. With this post this story gained totally new dimensions, i can feel it like i am participating in it. I am Leyla and i am Majnun. I feel the orange tree blossoms over my head, i feel roses i my hands, i feel musk scented wine on my tongue. Romantic love is so intoxicating, full of longing and so hard to find… maybe that is because i don’t know how it smells?
I would like to participate in this draw, I am in Europe. Thank you!

  • The ingredients sound amazing. I would love to try Habibi. I live in EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love the mentioning of honey and that truly peaked my first interest. this perfume sounds romantic and yet innocent. I have never heard the love stories of but can imagine the beauty. Giveaway. From California. Peace

  • Having just ordered some Voile de Parfum samples to explore this house I would be very grateful to win a 10ml of this one, as I love the samples. My favorite so far is Erotica, which reminds me a bit of vintage, or at least not current formula, Dioressence. Love the images chosen to illustrate this review and the promise of ‘metallic saffron’….. I’m in the UK.

I will say this review as a sweetie! What a lovely, tenderly, poetic & rhythmatic review. Fascinated with these romantic words and feelings: “Majnun offers his love a bouquet of jasmine, champaca and roses. Layla proffers her youthful Habibi a glass of wine, scented with musk. Their lips do not meet or even touch the glass, but both are intoxicated by the dusky aroma, by the perfumes of the flowers and trees, the honey, the air of the shadowy moonlit garden and by the their unrequited passion for one another.”
The notes Orange Blossom & Honey perfume with Arabian taste is beautiful, sensuous and sexy. Prince from DSH is my favorite.
Thanks for the generosity and opportunity, Habibi.

  • Great read and review. What appeals to me are the fruity and sweet aspects to this one. I haven’t tried any fragrances from this house. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

I am in the US. What a wonderful review. I love the story of Layla and Majnu, and this illustration of their innocent but deep romance is so spot on – amazing that you can smell this. Orange blossom and honey is one of my favorite combinations ever – I am currently surrounded by the smell from one of my soap bars wafting from the other side of my room. I don’t have a favorite DSH Perfume. My term of endearment for my love is Jaanu – someone who is your very soul.

  • Thank you everyone for commenting and joining this draw! My own Habibi loves this fragrance too. ❤️
